This book didn't struck me as a strong story, as the previous books in the series definitely were. But it was good enough. Sometimes, weak books by certain authors are still books to consider reading. And GL is one of those certain authors.

Kai has been with us since the beginning of the series but he was always the secondary one who was friends with Sonny, and little else. Matthew is new for me. I'm not sure if he had been mentioned before but that only demonstrates that if he did, his role was not very remarkable.

I liked that both of them are similar. In the first book Levi and Sonny could not be more different. And they are my favorite couple so far. It's awesome I can still glimpse details of them together in the following books. But the conflicts these two have are too much to be developed on the sly. I seriously think a book should be whole book should be written for them, because one novella obviously was not enough. Cam and Sasha in the second part of the series have issues in common, but still, one of them is a porn star whereas the other one is not. As opposed to this, Kai and Matthew are both go-go dancers, who from time to time shoot a scene for extra money. They are both similar in looks and apart from that they can be considered equals, mostly.

The porn-industry environment is appealing but it's still too idealistic to be true. Things just got worse with the couple of two ex-porn stars who bought the Blue Boy business to John. I don't know a thing about this industry, but certain measures as worrying so much about your employees and giving them so many holidays and insisting in giving them more don't sound to me like something productive at all. A businessman buys something to get money, not to lose it. I find it funny and difficult to imagine that good people never have money problems, whereas bad people have a tendency to exploit their employees. I need something more realistic here. How come being a good person frees you from paying the bills?

I say it because, no way these two take MONTHS to get to know each other until they make the film. I'm sure this world is more abusive and straight-to-the-point than that. And the owners guiding them holding their hands sounds cheesy at least. In fact, the owners pushing Kai to study is cheesy at least. Don't get me wrong, this is in truth admirable, but they never struck to me as the businessmen they supposedly are. How do they buoy the endeavor if what they do is encouraging their employees to get qualification? Is that not a little counterproductive because it implies a way to get rid of your employees instead of getting them to work for you? I don't say that people are selfish as a rule but the issue was not treated well enough for me to wholly believe it. Just the opposite, I was more and more shocked every time. Very pedant.

If I overlook everything mentioned before (as I actually did) I can say I pretty much enjoyed the book. I can see why Kai and Matthew feel good when they are together. Matthew is the smart one, just about to get his degree, whereas Kai is struggling to get his SAT (Did I say this name correctly?) as he has reading problems (dyslexia). There are moments in which Kai seemed a little immature but I can't push myself to hate him due to that. I could easily sympathize with him. Matthew's POV is absent but he seems stable, if only a little lonely and hurt from a previous affair.

All in all, an enjoyable book I'd recommend.

I feel like this series had a lot of potential but not one story feels finished and it was a disappointing reading experience.

I'm assuming there's no more books to come but there are so many loose ends. It feels frustrating and like I've wasted my time reading these three books because pretty much everything is as up in the air now as it was at the beginning of book one - what was the point of any of these books?

I liked the characters in this series but everything is so wishy washy. Even when they're coupled up they're still having sex with other people outside of their porn jobs (except the couple in this book), but there's no conversations about it! It felt unrealistic considering how possessive they all claimed to be...

There's also no real mention of safe sex in any setting - porn studio, relationships, threesomes etc. except for maybe two or three mentions of condoms in an endless sea of sex scenes. It just felt really irresponsible, especially for sex work and considering the education around STIs these days. Plus almost all the characters are somehow involved with each other at one stage or another throughout the series so it felt a bit gross not knowing if they were careful...

It also felt like there was a build up for another story involving Cam and Jude, and wtf is happening with Sonny?? It's been hinted at for three books and then there's just no resolution. Nothing feels finished!!!

Arghhhhh! *tosses book aside*
*quietly side-eyes book*

Grrrrrrr!
*quickly rescues book and gently pats cover*

This novella in the Blue Boy Studio made me crazy! I loved it and I hated it. It was hot and hotter, but I was all over the place. And after my small temper tantrum at the end, I can only hope book four is coming out soon. There is another book coming, right? We NEED another…my oneclick finger is ready and waiting! I still can’t help stick with my earlier feelings that this would have worked better as segments or serials in one story because everything runs together and continues. Don’t get me wrong, this is definitely Kai’s story but the rest of the guys are still playing important roles in the storyline. And things are worse with Sonny and Levi. *pouts* This does not make me happy. Giving me one happy ending but taking another away hurts and apparently brings out my inner toddler. Ha! Despite all my grumbling, I really did enjoy it.
Let me tell you why….

What's to like: All of the guys! We have met Kai before and Matthew was briefly introduced earlier but now its time to get personal. Kai not only shoots scenes with BBS but he’s also a dancer at Silver. Matthew does the same but they rarely cross paths. Kai is good at what he does and he’s always enjoyed it, but suddenly he finds himself stuck in neutral, just going through the motions. Jon may not have called him out on it before but Jude and Mac don’t run things like Jon did. The new owners of BBS have certain expectations of their guys and Kai happens to be in the spotlight at the moment. They understand porn has an expiration date and want their boys to use their time with them as a stepping stone to improve their circumstances. Kai never graduated high school. School was not easy for him and he never had any support. Now he does. Once his learning disability is diagnosed he discovers new skills to help him succeed. Matthew has a plan and porn was simply part of his plan. Kai never had a plan beyond porn but perhaps now he can look further into his future, and maybe that future involves Matthew.

What's to love: I love how Garrett brings Kai and Matthew together. They decide to switch things up in the sudio…literally. Kai and Matthew are both bottoms and Cam suggests Kai reverses his role for the camera. Kai tends to top from the bottom most of the time anyways, so it shouldn’t be that much different right? Wrong. It’s very different and the guys figure spending some time together outside of work will improve their chemistry and help the scene. Essentially, they start dating. Who knew hanging out and making out could be so amazing? Things are still falling into place at the Studio since the transition and there is no rush to do their scene. It doesn’t take long and their tender friendship transforms into something bigger. Kai’s never felt this way before and it terrifies him. Overwhelmed with feelings, he allows a moment of insecurity to crash into their fragile relationship. Now he’s gone and done it…and may have ruined the best thing in his life before he had the chance to cherish it.

Beware of: Porn stars falling love bring their own set of complications and the classic misunderstanding almost destroys them. AND! The intense urge to throttle previous characters for….unknown reasons! Ohhh, I can’t wait for the next book!!

This book is for: Blue Boy fans…you really should read these in order and together because I think the combination packs a powerful punch.

Smoking hot installment in the Blue Boy series. Kai and Matthew were both adorable with incredible chemistry that just burned up the pages of this read. We're moving forward in increments with the other characters. We learn more about the new owners, I'm enjoying the changes they're bringing with them to the studio.

I will say that I'm worried about Sonny and what's going on with him. His issues from book two are escalating here quite dramatically and his story can't drag out much longer before something horrible happens I'm sure. :( I like the build up of tensions between Jude and Sonny as well as the incident at Silver that may bleed into other books.

Speaking of future stories:

Levi, I continue to love everything you are...continue as you are, sir.

This read like the others in the series is short with quite a few time jumps but I got a good hold on the MC's here and I didn't feel cheated out their story in any way. Looking forward to see what book 4 has in store for us!

The question foremost in my mind after reading this novella: Seriously, how long does it take to plan a 20 minute porn clip? Because these guys seemed to be planning and consulting with other people for MONTHS in advance of their scene!

So the novella's premise gets a bit of an *eye roll* from me, but I enjoyed both of the main characters (Kai, the sweet puppy and Matthew the sexy unknown element) and I appreciated that more of the focus was on THEM in this story than it was on the MCs in the previous book in the series.

However, the rift between Levi and Sonny that started in Bones and continued as a subplot in the background of the this book is really harshing my buzz, people. I'll admit that it gives the story some realism (not EVERYONE that get together stays together and they're PORN STARS so those odds are probably further stacked against them), but let's not forget that this is a romance novel. Let me just have my illusions, okay?!

This one didn't work as well for me as the previous two and I can't say exactly why.

Part of it is that there were bits of the couples from the other books which made their previous happy endings not seem to still be the case which was distracting.

The other was that there didn't seem to be much of a story surrounding the relationship between Kai and Matthew other than filming a scene.

Still, it's a well written story with some good moments and the cover is a vast improvement the other two books.

ETA: My comment regarding the cover refers to a previous edition.

Yay!! Go Kai, at last you've got someone of your own. Loved this one, the slow and patient but really sexy build up between Kai and Matthew, the spark that was lit and then **exploded** when they finally got together....and that ending, sigh. 4.5 HOT stars from me.

Sonny...what the hell is going on with him?? No wonder Levi is worried, I'm worried I admit it, I suspect drug addiction BUT surely his mates will do something soon?? I'm happy that Cam and Sasha are still together, and that Cam seems to be recovering from his brush with testicular cancer. After the creep that was Jon upped and left, I love the pairing of Jude and Mac, and would love to read their back story....2 porn stars, 1 of whom turns into a firefighter...oh the visuals!! Great story Garrett!! ^_^

Sigo sintiéndome atraída indefectiblemente hacia Sonny y Levi, casi en exclusividad. Los otros son como figuras que simplemente acompañan o sirven de trampolín para los otros dos. Espero que su historia culmine en algún libro a futuro.

The Romance Review

Do porn stars experience ennui? For Kai who is the epitome of sexy twink, getting pounded on film is no longer as fun as it used to be. Kai used to love a big man taking him hard in the ass. He's not sure if his boredom is due to the new management or to his favorite partners moving on.

This series is taking strange turns. It is as if the stories come through a stream of consciousness. There are tangent story lines which dip in and out in a fleeting manner. This distracts the reader and makes them wonder what is going on with a secondary character instead of focusing on the main storyline. All eyes should be on Kai and his "mid-life" crisis. He is debating whether to quit porn or become a top. As a top, he'd need a bottom. Matthew fits the bill, even though Matthew doesn't know if he can take Kai seriously as a top.

Since this is a story featuring a porn star and a porn company, one would expect the sex to be hot. It is smoking and surprisingly funny. Ms. Leigh adds in the bloopers of real life into the porn scenes. This makes it more human and relatable. Kai's mischievous nature is enhanced when he mixes up with one of his good friends. This playfulness helps balance the heaviness of Kai's depression.

The relationship struggle between Kai and Matthew is disheartening. The miscommunication is all too common and disastrous. Kai's lack of self-esteem undermines his relationship with Matthew over and over again. Ms. Leigh keeps it palpable by making Kai question himself and still function in a balanced manner. Kai doesn't go overboard with too stupid to live decisions and he doesn't become a whiny bitch. Instead, his need for stability, love and reassurance makes a reader want to cuddle him up and keep all the bad things away. Kai is really too cute and adorable. His tentative relationship with Matthew is sweet. Matthew is the guy who helps Kai be the best he can be. The synergy between the two is energizing.

The additional support from the secondary characters makes this story a moving one. Basically, it's a story of support and believing in Kai so that he can achieve goals he didn't think was possible. This message is encouraging for those who may have been told they can't do something only to find out they can with the right support. Recommended for m/m lovers who like a happily ever after.

Reviewed as part of Blue Boy: The Boxed Set

3.5 stars

The set-up in this novella had me grinning from the start. Two nerdy twinks getting dirty and then falling head-over-heels for each other? Yes, please!

description

I fell for Kai pretty quickly. He’s like a lost puppy, in a way. Having been abandoned by family and friends in the past, he looks for affection where he can find it. It was tough to read him being so hard on himself.

Of the the three romances in this boxed set, Kai and Matthew’s relationship is the one I found most believable and fleshed-out. Though they first begin spending time together because of the porn scene, it doesn’t take them long to become friends. Matthew and Kai are quite different in personality and background, but they compliment each other.

I loved seeing the two fall for each other during their study dates.

While the inevitable conflict comes, it doesn’t take Kai and Matthew too long to patch things up. They learn to communicate, and by the end of the book are in a strong place.

This was quite a sexy read. Kai and Matthew don’t sleep with other men once they commit to a scene together, so they spend a lot of time finding out what works for them. Having always been the bottom, Kai’s eager to experiment being the dominant one in the bedroom. Kai and Matthew have an undeniable spark, but their exploration was also light-hearted and funny at times.

I also enjoyed the inclusion of the studio’s new owners, Mac and Jude. I really liked how they worked to create a healthier environment at Blue Boy, and how that made life better for the men who worked there. I wouldn’t mind reading how Mac and Jude met and fell in love.

This last novella is sweet and sexy. Kai and Matthew’s story was very good addition to the series.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Just like the previous books Bullet and Bones, I was instantly spellbound.
In Bold we finally get to know Kai a little better. Really have been waiting for his story for a long time! And I’d say it was definitely worth the wait. He’s such a sweetheart and I enjoyed getting a bit more background information.
Bold is one of those books I wanted to read slowly to savour it, but at the same time I knew I wouldn’t be able to put it down once I started.
I LOVE how Garrett Leighs boys ALWAYS have depth. Yes, it's a series set in the porn industry, but her characters never feel like they’re made up or like they’re some cardboard cutouts. It's not about the sex, but about the (background) stories of each of them and I really enjoy those kind of books.
And also seeing the other boys from the Blue Boy Studios again was fantastic! They're one big family and I really like how they're always there for each other when someone needs anything.
Bold captivated me with its suspense and I couldn‘t put it down before I had read the last page.
Now I'm hoping it won‘t take long for the fourth book in this series to be released, because I absolutely can't wait for it. I love these boys!
And lastly, I just have to mention the cover, how amazing is that? Defintely my favorite so far! Thanks Ms Leigh for another wonderful story!

I'm copying my review of the series to all 3 books since I review the box set. Read the review cautiously.

I’m not giving these star ratings. I don’t really know what to give the books or the series as a whole. The writing is good but…

I’m going to review this as a series since that’s how I read it. I don’t think they could be read as standalones since most of the characters appear in all 3 books and several of the storylines carryover from book 1 through book 3.

Bullet

I couldn’t tell if Levi was angry for being gay or not…why was he so angry? Why did he fight his attraction to men or was it just the porn he hated? As the series progressed, he seemed fine giving casual affection to his friends and he was openly affectionate to Sonny, so I never understood the anger and aggression in his porn scenes.

The scenes between Levi and Sonny were interesting…a couple of times I felt they cared for and about each other and by the time I started to believe it the book was finished.

In this book, we never learned anything about Sonny…what was his story?

If you’re looking for a book with touchy feels, this isn’t it…I understand this is a book about porn stars but the only emotion I felt from the book was anger.

Bones

Sonny and Levi’s story continues a bit in this one. There is still a lot of tension between then and even though we get a hint of some of Sonny’s history we’re left with a lot of questions.

This book is better than book 1 but still not fully developed or complete. I don’t understand why these books are so short and the storyline continued into the next book never to be resolved.
Sasha and Cam seem good together and their attraction is immediate. I loved how they met and that they didn’t work together…they seemed more genuine although Sasha smudged that a bit for me when he admitted he recognized Cam.

Sasha’s about-face and his lack of explanation were hasty and not handled well but over quickly, possibly only because the book is so short. He ends up being pretty great and we get more feels in this book than in book 1.

I again was not a fan of the abrupt ended.

Bold

Sonny and Levi are still a mess in this book, their relationship is no clearer now than when it started, and their story cannot be finished. It sounds like Sonny is bi-polar instead of having ADD but we haven’t gotten a clear answer. I have no idea what’s going on between them and the back and forth we only get glimpses of in passing are frustrating. I honestly don’t understand why we either don’t have more answers or we haven’t stopped reading about them.

Cam is still going through treatment but it’s more on the periphery except in one scene and how it affects Kai.

Kai is a bit of a contradiction in that he’s a very complex yet underdeveloped character. I wanted to spend more time on them and with him but because we focused on the side stories and yes, I know – the porn – we just didn’t get the full story I wanted. He and Matthew are great together and there are some hints dropped for future scenes or events that sounded promising but here we are 4 years later, and this is still the last book in the series as far as I can tell. I could do the research to see if there are spin-offs, but I don’t think I will.

I also would like to know if the attack on the club was intentional or happenstance. That was a huge ordeal and Kai’s recovery from it was WAY undersold.

There was another rushed ending after quite a bit of build-up.

All 3 books were too short, underdeveloped and incomplete for the stories being told. A couple of the storylines are still incomplete and as the third book was released 4 years ago, I have no idea if they will ever be finished. There was so much potential for powerful, emotional books but they just fell short which made me a bit sad, especially knowing what this author is capable of writing. It took me over a week to finish 3 novellas and I’m not sure if I’ve ever felt as unsatisfied with a series.

Buona lettura.

3.5 Stars.

Please excuse my incoherent rambling, I’ve been up all night reading this and other things but am determined to write at least a short review before I fall into bed.

I’m not sure that I think Bold is a better story than Bullet but I think I enjoyed Bold more. With Bullet, I was pulled out of the story by minor, nit picky problems whereas with Bold, I was able to sit back and enjoy the ride without those minor niggling distractions. I kind of have to laugh at myself because the angst in Bullet would ordinarily give it the edge over the sweetness in Bold for me, but that wasn’t the case here. The sweetness really worked for me. Maybe I was able to appreciate this story more because, being demi (or something close to it), the slow build between Kai and Matthew resonates with me in a way that hits closer to home. I don’t know.

In any case, even though I wasn’t crazy about the middle book in the series, Bones, I think it was worth it to continue the series. Kai and Matthew captured my heart as individuals and as a couple. Their story made me happy.

Once again, I loved being able to see Sonny and Levi’s evolving relationship as well. I actually want more of that story because it still seems to be evolving.
