I have read several books from this author, and this series is by far my favorite thing she has ever written!! It’s so magical, and intense! It was so full of suspense that I read this book in 1 sitting, and I can not wait to read the next book!!

I bought this second book of the series though I considered Golden Curse to be a solidly three star read, but I won't be reading the final book of the series. Reading Golden Chains felt like that part in Frozen, when you realize that Disney up and used the same face for all of the townsfolk at the ball, rendering the townsperson face a few colors and calling it golden. We, as readers and fans, deserve even the background characters to not be linocut 2D renderings. These pages made me teeth squeak, grinding in awkward awareness of the (hate me) amateurish writing.

I didn't like this one as much as the first book because the romance just kept getting more dramatic and annoying. They love each other, then hate each other. One can't forgive the other than the next moment they can't live without the other one. The romance dominated the plot, which I did not enjoy. I'll try the last book, hoping it will have more of the politics and Rapunzel story line.

I don’t know what I feel man.
This isn’t a storyline that’s completely unpredictable to me, but it’s still quite good.
I liked the story, but I hated the ending! I can’t deal with that lol.
I do hope everything will turn out okay again, because I’m not happy with this turn of events 😭

I'm posting this 2 min. after I finished the book so I might add some more tomorrow once my thoughts are organized😂
⛓ I listened to the audiobook so my experience with it may be different from yours/the physical book.
⛓ While I think the narrator did a great job, my one issue was that there was only one narrator and there’s at least 15 characters who have talking parts and while she was really good at diversifying her voice, I got confused a lot because I had to remember who was talking as well as that it was a different character talking😂😅
⛓ The tagline says this is the true story of Rapunzel, but I must agree to disagree. I think saying this a gender bent Rapunzel is a better descriptor. However, I only noticed one or two scenes that were reminiscent of the Rapunzel fairytale so saying it’s a retelling at all is a bit much. It’s a bit of a Sleeping Beauty retelling. Still a good series though.

That ending though!! Ms. Lynn, you better hurry up and write the last book. The second installment in this fantastic series didn't disappoint. It was heartbreaking and beautiful. There were moments when I wanted to punch Alex and just as many where I wanted to smack Etta.I can't wait for the last one so our ill-fated couple can finally get their fairytale ending.

In a kingdom on the verge of rebellion, Alex is torn between his love for the woman that betrayed him, and his duty to his people. But Etta has no time to wait for the man he might become. Not while her people are in chains.
With La Dame’s forces growing in the ruined kingdom of Bela, no decision can be made lightly.
If it is even their decision at all…
The good:
While the beginning is somewhat slow (I’ll talk about that later), the story gradually gains momentum, with all the little pieces fitting together into what is a truly epic finale! M. Lynn manages to pull off a satisfying conclusion, despite ending with as many questions as there are answers – there is a major bomb in the epilogue that just about blew my socks off. There aren’t many authors I know of who can write an ending like that without leaving the reader intensely frustrated. So, thank you sincerely.
There are quite a few big moments in Golden Chains that I absolutely loved!
The first being the throne scene in which Alex finally grows some balls. No one knows what he’s planning on doing, least of all Etta. What he does…it was nothing short of ‘oh my god!’.
There is a twist a little over three quarters of the way in that I am so disappointed I didn’t catch sooner. Once it’s pointed out to you, EVERYTHING makes sense and you’re just left feeling ‘wow’.
And the tower scene! My god, the tower scene, it was great. Anyone who’s read the original tale of Rapunzel will recognise the scene. But M. Lynn makes it hers in a new and perfect way.
It was great to finally learn about La Dame. We know so little of her in the first book that she felt as incorporeal as the legends. But in Golden Chains we come face to face with the Draconian queen herself. And she is every bit as twisted and cunning as I’d imagined. My suspicions about her motives were confirmed, much to my delight. Part of me feels for her, but what she is doing is total overkill.
The not so good:
There were a couple things I had issues with in this book.
First and foremost is the relationship between Alex and Etta. It yo-yos constantly, from mistrust to lust, total trust to disdain. It was hard to keep up. There are legitimate reasons for it, given the nature of the curse and their opposing obligations. But the overall effect for me was a lack of credible intimacy. The story actually flowed better when they were apart. Together, they often frustrated me more than anything else.
There is some cringey dialogue between Alex and Etta that doesn’t quite flow naturally. But that could be due to my feelings on their relationship. It does, however, suit the fairy-tale vibe the story is inspired by.
Like I mentioned above, the book starts off slow. It isn’t until a little before the halfway point that the story picked up for me. That might have had something to do with the fact that the beginning primarily takes place within the castle and focuses on Alex and Etta’s tenuous relationship. But I can see why the beginning was done the way it was. There were necessary plot elements that needed to be established before the ball could get rolling. And once it did it was glorious.

The truth was Etta felt like a past she couldn’t shake, but Persinette was a future she wasn’t yet prepared for.

Golden Chains was every bit the sequel I was hoping for. Betrayal, mystery, politics, and a curse at the heart of it all. The story is punctuated with standout scenes and shocking twists. Just when you think you know who to trust, everything gets turned on its head! The only big downside was the slow start.
Will I read the sequel?
Definitely! While Alex and Etta do frustrate me, I’m invested in their journey. And I’m eager to learn more about La Dame and what she has planned to come. If you want a story that’ll keep you on your toes, then look no further. Just be sure to get into a comfortable position, because once you start you won’t want to put it down.

There are some really huge, life-altering secrets that are revealed. And Alexandre and Etta have some big decisions to make as they try to figure out if the love they feel for each other is real or if it is only due to the magical bond that ties them together. Honestly, I was completely captivated by this one and didn't want to stop reading, even to sleep. I had to learn everything about what was going on. And, now that I've finished, I've already started reading book 3. This series is so enjoyable and is a completely new take on the beloved Rapunzel story. M. Lynn has done an amazing job of making this story completely her own while, at the same time, paying respect to the original story.

But escape does not bring freedom or more safety - it just brings deception and different kind of chains. All are afraid - magical and magicless alongside. La Dame is deadly set on her vengeful quest, manipulating all she can to achieve her vendetta, only to be surprised what she unleashed by her actions. Gaule is on the brink of civil war, and Bela lies in ruins. Could a small group of heroes restore the peace, destroy the danger, and bring back happiness?
Is it even possible when you are left empty, devoit of emotions?
Can forgiveness return to one's heart and soften the violence and darkness roaming the world? Can those with and without magic unite to defeat the greater evil?
There are so many questions left unanswered, yet so many answered by the revelations in the book. The reference to Rapunzel retelling is becoming more obvious, although elements of other fairy tale occur as well. The story itself deepens and darkens, and so change the characters, although not always in the most understandable or believable way. The ending provides some reconciliation, only to be torn to shreds again, setting up the field for the next book - and I am really curious what will it bring to us.

3.5 stars. I am thoroughly enjoying this creation. As the story progresses and more and more backstory comes along, the mashup of of all the fantasies I have always loved are appearing! So much is happening! Etta is trapped and tortured with some of her people. The hate for the Bela peoples is so crazy strong. We haven't gotten to a point for it to be explained yet why exactly the old king hated magic so much and turned on his best friend. Was it because of Tyson....?
So I recognized the stories Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty, and a tiny bit of Cinderella in this! I felt they were really woven together pretty seamlessly! I am a little thrown off from the ending here. What is going on with Etta..I am a little scared at why the Evil Sorceress is so thrilled about what is going down. Can't wait to read the next one! I need answers!

I did not love it.
I was actually quite fed up of the characters by the time I finished. They seemed to be having really weird mood swings; one minute they're on someone's side, the other minute, god only knows what's going on.
The reason this got four stars instead of three, is that it was a good continuation from where the first book left off, but it could have been way better. If this had been a standalone, I doubt I would have struggled through with this.
I will most likely be reading the third book, if nothing else then for the conclusion of the story.

And the sequel did NOT disappoint!! I fled through this book just like with the first instalment, as the writing is easy and flowy and the story is gripping. Loved to see the characters evolve and grow and transform, especially Etta, loved the twists that kept being thrown and the foreshadowing that allowed me to at least expect some of them. That ending was to die for, so well done, I honestly did not see that twist coming and it was exactly what the story demanded! Would love to have been a little more inside La Dame's psychological world, would have loved to be given more insight into her - especially because I already expected the reasons for her hatred of the Basiles!! - hopefully I'll get more of that on the third and final book. Seriously well done, this re-telling of a classical tale! I reccomend it to any lover of fantasy and fairytales

Enjoyed it as much as the first book in the series! Here it becomes more clear that it's a retelling of Rapunzel. For example, there is a prisoner in a tower with no door... I love that Lynn has switched the roles; the woman has to rescue the man. Perfectly logical, if you ask me!
We finally get to meet the infamous La Dame, the evil antagonist. And she really is terrifying and wicked as hell. A character that you love to hate!
I'm really looking forward to reading the conclusion!

A wonderful second book of the true Rapunzel. I couldn’t get enough of the story. How will she get out of her troubles. I couldn’t stop reading I definitely need the next book to find out more.

It took me a minute to even remember the first book. Again - language warning and sexual content. I wish they didn’t have to have that. It doesn’t make the story better - in fact the opposite. Still following the story though… it is interesting to see the fairy tales mixed in the story.

[This is a review for the whole trilogy, not the individual book]
I came across this series at a good price, and decided to give it a shot after seeing it was rated rather highly on Goodreads.
First, let me give credit where it is due – I found the overarching plot to be compelling enough that I read this series to the end. After reading the first book, and struggling with some of the flaws, I seriously questioned whether it was worth reading the whole series. But I did. And it was because I was invested enough in the characters and the story to keep going for the sake of closure. And it was worth reading to the end, because the author finished the story well and had a satisfying ending. So kudos there.
That being said, I had three major complaints with the book (hidden for spoilers):

I still feel that the series is loosely based on Rapunzel, but I am beginning to see more bits and pieces that are similar. I've got what I think is a pretty good comparison that just popped into my head as I started typing. You know in the movie 27 Dresses when Tess takes their mother's wedding dress, chops it up, and uses a few pieces of it in her own wedding dress? Yeah, that's what this story is with Rapunzel: bits and pieces of that story used in this one. It's not the story of Rapunzel, but it's got some elements that have been taken from it and integrated into a new story.
It was definitely difficult to like Alex for a good chunk of this book; however, I understand the pressure he was under as King of Gaule, as well as the difficulty he would have in questioning everything he's ever known about the nature of magic. Still, I wanted to punch him in the face a lot. Etta continued to be her stubborn self, but I think that aspect of her was important in this installment of the series. She became more . . . queenly, though she was still very much herself. Throughout these first two books, Edmund has become one of my favorite characters in the series. He's a steady, stalwart, loyal friend to boy Etta and Alex. Despite his own feelings, he holds no grudge for the love between his friends.
La Dame is featured much more in this book (was she even in the last one? I can't remember), and I'm not a fan. I mean, obviously, she's the villain. So duh. Perhaps it's the narrator's portrayal of her, but I found La Dame to be that kind of saccharine evil that just is a little too much. She kept reminding me of something that I couldn't quite figure out until just now. I am laughing at myself for this comparison, but here it goes: She is the evil Eris in Barbie: A Mermaid Tale! (Hey, I've got a daughter who loves those Barbie movies.). I can't get it out of my head--that's who I picture every time the narrator reads for La Dame.

She became more . . . queenly, though she was still very much herself. Throughout these first two books, Edmund has become one of my favorite characters in the series. He's a steady, stalwart, loyal friend to boy Etta and Alex. Despite his own feelings, he holds no grudge for the love between his friends.
La Dame is featured much more in this book (was she even in the last one? I can't remember), and I'm not a fan. I mean, obviously, she's the villain. So duh. Perhaps it's the narrator's portrayal of her, but I found La Dame to be that kind of saccharine evil that just is a little too much. She kept reminding me of something that I couldn't quite figure out until just now. I am laughing at myself for this comparison, but here it goes: She is the evil Eris in Barbie: A Mermaid Tale! (Hey, I've got a daughter who loves those Barbie movies.). I can't get it out of my head--that's who I picture every time the narrator reads for La Dame.

This book continues on from Golden Curse. Etta begins in the dungeons and there’s a lot of mixed feelings going on with a lot of the characters. La Dame has a central time in this book and I recommend keen readers lookout for some intentional inclusions sprinkled in the plot.
This book is a very different pace from the blood and fighting of book 1 - the focus here is in relationships once the truth is revealed and...what happens next.
I have to say I didn’t see the twist coming in this book and I was left thinking - huh? But of course, the desire to finish Etta’s story spurs one on to book 3, Golden Crown
*Overall, this book didn't really measure up to the first, especially as I have now read the third book. I wanted more but this felt like a filler setting up book 3.

Wow, this series is surprising me so much! Im’ obssessed!!
Okay so it was really good seeing Alex think through his own mind, and not his dad’s. He has so much love for Etta it’s crazy. And she has the same love for him. I liked his connection with the girl he was engadged to, she loves Tyson, but I don’t really trust her. I loved so much all the decisions he made in order to help Etta.
I loved that after Alex was kidnapped, Etta realized that the curse was no longer a curse, because she would be happy having to be tyied to him her whole life.
I had a really hard time imagining La Dame being beautiful, because in my mind all I can imagine is something like Ursula... So yeah.
At the ball, Matteo told Edmund and Etta, that they should be careful because they are both very impulsive. Aaaaand they went and did exactly that, be impulsive, and they almost ruined everything, Edmund and Alex almost died. La Dame freed them of the curse, but she made Etta lose her heart, she has became just like La Dame, and that is scarry for the next book, Alex will have to fight really hard to bring her back, But ofcourse he will.
The whole thing with Maiya and Pierre annoyed me. This girl is sooo stupid. She is trapped now under La Dame, she did all that she did for her father, so he could ended up dad in two seconds. She better redeem herself next book, and betray La Dame to help Etta.
Tyson beeing Etta’s brother was exactly what I though when the Queen said that his dad was a man that she loved but she wouldn’t share who. Of course it was her dad. And let’s just say here, her dad was terrible. He created her on darkness, and gave her the name of La Dame’s daughter, I want to know exactly why now!
So excited to start reading the next one.

M. Lynn has written a second installment to her trilogy that outshines an excellent first! The drama and action are more intense. The plot is more twisted and inticate. Her fantasy world has expanded, and new fully developed characters have joined the old, filling in some questions left from the first book. Never fear this book ends with a bang. You will be waiting with baited breath for the final book in this most original fairy tale trilogy! Great writing!!!

Another gorgeous cover and of course equally awesome story as Golden Curse if not more!!!!
There are so many betrayals here, nobody knows who to trust anymore, even themselves.
The story is about how Etta and Alex will choose the path their going to make not just for themselves but also for the Kingdom they both reign over.
Alex has gone through too many betrayals and as what I have said on my review for Golden Curse, the hesitation between doing the good thing by not following his father's steps, risking being dethroned, versus pleasing the his kingdom and making people fear him, making him as powerful as his father, this made him, well for me, very human. I love how the author made him struggle and face lots of betrayal so he can be stronger and become wiser with his decisions.
Thr character development of the main characters are really good. Exposing Etta to more people of her kingdom helped with her decisions. Just like Alex, she too had discovered another betrayal and made a great impact to her. I am always on my toes with Alex and Etta's progress.
Judt one thing though, I'm a little bit confused with La Dame's intentions and all especially her revelations. There are more secrets to be uncovered for eveything to make sense
Then there's the ending. I really did not see that coming! Now I just can't wait to see what will happen to the fated enemies yet lovers.
