I have to say, Angelina J. Steffort's writing has indeed shown significant improvement, which is quite pleasing. However, I can't express the same sentiment for other elements of the book. Compared to the author's previous works, such as the compelling "Shattered Kingdom" series, this one unfortunately didn't live up to those expectations. Quitting was my last resort after reaching 70% marks. :( #DNF!

This is one of those books that slowly creeps in on you. Before you know it you're already deeply engaged by it.

I loved all the plot twists and details and I before I knew it, I cared deeply about all of the characters.

So well written! Truly a page turner.

I can't wait for more.

Just like Angelina's other work I am completely in love with this book. It had a slower start, but once it got to 57% the action started picking up. I hope we continue to learn more about Sanja's family and the magic system in this world. As much as I loved the story, I wasn't the biggest fan of the romance/love interest... I hope someone come and disrupts it. lol

Angelina is really good at managing a large amount of characters so hopefully the next book we see more characters and unique perspectives. I also am PRAYING we see more of a certain fairy male😏...

Overall this was a 4.5⭐ read for me and it'll be rough waiting for the second book next year!

I received an arc from the author and I am leaving an honest review voluntarily

Book 1 in the Quarter Mage series

Wow, a magically gripping storyline to ensnare the reader!! It's an intense, action-packed, swoon-worthy read that'll leave you on the edge of your seat. Magic, secrets, bargains, hidden agendas centered around a dangerous game of revenge. I have cried over heartbreak, melted over sweet moments, and been shocked to the core. The characters are so well-developed with a morally grey character who can capture your heart. The world building is so detailed that it paints a picture for the reader. I've read all Angelina's book, but this may be my favorite series thus far.

Fleeing for Safety...Hunted by Those in Power...Found Family...Sacrifice...Connections...Bound by Invisible Threads...Love...

"Freedom is always worth running for."
"...had stolen what should have one day been my throne."
"I leave with you, or I won't leave at all."
"Whatever happens, I love you too."
"There are more important things in life than what I can do or what I wish to do."

Gripping, enthralling, and absolutely addicting.

The Quarter Mage is the first book in a new series by Angelina J. Steffort (one of my favorite authors!). Once I picked up the book, I couldn’t stop. The world-building is so vivid and detailed that I could paint a picture of the characters and the plot. Plus, I absolutely loved Sanja. Her story is intense, action-packed, and has quite a few swoon-worthy moments.

I’ve been a fan of Angelina’s for quite some time and have read all of her books. This might just be my new favorite yet. I can’t wait to see what comes next for Sanja, Tristan, and Recienne.

Something new and different at every turn of a page. Angelina has created another magical world full of love and intrigue, and Sanja’s adventures and misfortunes kept me reading.
Fleeing a murderous husband and hiding among the fae isn't what Sanja expected to do, but she had no choice. So she devises another plan until the evil fae king forces her into a series of trials to win her freedom and save the lives of her new friends.
I loved the story and can't wait for the next book. And like all of Angelina’s books, I know I won't be disappointed, and the wait will be worth it.

The first 43% of the book was engaging and I thought had some decent build to it, but when Sanja jumps on Tristan and they have sex, I found that my enjoyment was tampered with a cold bucket of water. Ah, insta-love and lust-is-the-main-focus, how unsatisfying and disappointing you are.

That said, considering what I've seen from the next books, perhaps the romantic angle with Tristan isn't that pressing and he's more of a part of the story, not the goal. I've seen people compare this with A Court of Thorns and Roses and I can already seen what aspects would draw that comparison, so it won't surprise me if later on, Sanja has a different love interest--one who is dark but secretly has a heart of gold or some such thing.

I'm tentatively willing to give book #2 a try to see, since I did appreciate the author's storytelling and writing up until gasp, I suddenly must have you inside me happened. Sanja is a decent heroine to be stuck in the head of and I appreciate how much focus was on building up the world and seeing Sanja interact with others and not just spend the whole run time being a super special chosen one who magically, no pun intended, solves all crises in the most contrived and convenient way.

All in all, it wasn't a bad read, and certainly has fared better than many other reads I've tried recently, but it wasn't the finally, some good fucking food moment I've been so desperate to find. I'd recommend it if you aren't that bothered by insta-love and liked the general outline of plot you find in ACOTAR (with three challenges to save everyone and a enemy-ally who secretly helps the heroine to boot).

She ran away from her wedding because the groom her father chose for her was an abusive, horrible man. Within seconds of being married, he murders her court. One of the sentries says he had no idea that would happen. Bless this woman for not looking straight into the camera like Jim from the Office because she knew thus the running.

She ends up making her way into fae land and falls in with a few mages who are going to teach her magic. I feel like the relationship with Tristan (one of the mages) feels too easy. Is he “the” guy in this series? It seems so soon.

The prince may be crazy but I still find him kind of hot. I'm judging myself. Don't worry. He's his own brand of prince but I definitely got Rhysand vibes off him during her second task.

I'm really looking forward to seeing where this series is going to go.

Thank you to Angelina Steffort for a copy in exchange for an honest review. My opinions are my own.

I absolutely love Angelina’s stories. She such an incredible storyteller.
The Quarter Mage is a fantastic story that makes you just want to know what will happen next. It has you gripping your seat with anticipation. You get brought into Sans world. The characters are well written and the leading lady has such growth in the story.
If you love magic, Fae and adventure this is a fantastic book to read. I can’t wait to find out what Angelina writes next. I absolutely love her stories.

Where to begin? Why is writing a book review so hard?!

On the one hand, I enjoyed this read quite a lot. There’s a good plot, likable characters and a good world building.

On the other hand however, this book felt just a bit too much like ACOTAR. Don’t get me wrong - I love ACOTAR (like I adore more or less everything SJM writes), although it’s not the best book in that series. So, theoretically - I am totally up for a similar read - which was why I was so excited when I heard that Quarter Mage was being written.

The thing is, that while it’s not exactly the same, Quarter Mage is just a bit too similar to ACOTAR in a way that kind of ruins the reading experience a little. I would probably feel different had I not read ACOTAR but since I have, the entire story line in Quarter Mage felt rather predictable and ‘done’.

With that said, let’s move on to the actual story in question. The Quarter Mage is a book full of interesting characters, action, some romance and last but definitely not least: magic. I love how Angelina has created this rather unique magical system and while there was some information in this book, I definitely hope we’ll get to know more in upcoming books. The world building is really good as well and as always, Angelina manages to keep the balance between giving a lot - but not too much - details and describing the world in a larger scale.

All in all, Quarter Mage comes off as a promising start on a new adventure and I’m eager to see what the next book will bring!

Thank you so much to Emily Prebich and the author Angelina J. Steffort herself for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review!

I'm a member of Angelina Steffort's ARC group, which means I get early access to her books in exchange for an honest review, and I'm so lucky to be a part of it because Angelina is a sleeping giant. Her books are so captivating - she truly is a wonderful storyteller, and The Quarter Mage is no exception. It sucked me in from the first page, and had me hooked the entire time. It had wonderful world building, and characters who seem so real they could walk right into your living room. The only reason I did not give this book a 5-star rating was because of the similarities I saw between it and ACOTAR (the main character given three tasks in order to save those she loves, and a mysterious and handsome male helping her through those tasks, despite his unknown intentions). Despite those similarities, I will absolutely be continuing this series, and I wish all the books would be released ASAP.

This was a wild ride full of amazing world building, a really interesting magic system, and wonderful characters. I really enjoyed the fast pace and how descriptive the writing was. This had plot twists that left me gasping and I have so many questions I still need answered, but it set things up really well for the next book. Loved the tension between Tristan and Sanja, and I thought Sanja’s character growth was incredible. She really came into her own, which was great to see. While this did end in a slight cliffhanger, it was such an entertaining read, and I can’t wait for the next book! *I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Oh my stars!! This book is a journey that I did not want to end! Sanja is a human princess forced into an arranged marriage with an evil man with a plot to take her throne. When things go unexpectedly the day of the wedding, Sanja finds herself in the fairylands, where humans are prey… What could go wrong?! This book has it all - adventure, romance, thrills, fighting, and magic! Highly recommend!

Thank you to the author and Next Step PR for sending me an early copy of this book! All opinions are my own!

If you're looking for the next great fae series, here it is! I absolutely loved the world building in this book and the way that it felt so unique despite being a fae book. It really took fae for a spin and gave it something new and exciting, which made it very refreshing and much more enjoyable. I loved the take that humans can have magic and that it's their way to get an advantage over the fae. I do wish there had been more in the way of worldbuilding on the human side, but I think we'll get to see that in the next part of the series.

I think my biggest issue with the book was the romance. It felt forced and very abrupt to me. It felt like they didn't have enough time to bond or get to know each other, but suddenly they were in love. I wanted them to see so much more of each other and have a backbone to their relationship, but it just sort of happened and felt very jarring to me. I also wish it hadn't been so long because it felt very slow and drawn out to me.

The plot twists at the end and the plot line with the prince have me really intrigued! I am definitely interested in where these things will lead and how it's going to affect the characters and their world. I loved seeing them come together and the way they each developed and am interested in watching how they go from here.

If you're a fantasy lover, especially of fae, definitely check out this new series!

Sanja is arranged to be married to a tyrant of a man and does the only thing she can do: run. But when she is nearly killed, she finds herself thrown into a realm where she is most vulnerable and attaches herself to a powerful Mage, Tristan. The more time they spend together, the more their attraction grows. But danger is still out there, and Sanja is not safe.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect with this book, but I knew it would be fantastic coming from this author. Angelina Steffort has a unique way in writing fantasy novels, that makes you feel like you've been transported into that world. From the details to the world building and characters development, you can easily visualize what the author imagined for this story.

I loved Sanja and Tristan and together I felt like they made a powerful duo. She's strong willed and has a stubborn streak, and he's like a brooding Mage that will teach her a lesson if necessary (at least that's how I seen him 😁)

Sanja might be a princess, but the protection that title once offered her is no longer there. In order to save her own life, Sanja is forced to flee the only home she’s ever known. When she is saved by magic that shouldn’t even exist, Sanja must reevaluate her outlook on the world. When she signs herself over as a servant and apprentice to a powerful and well known Mage, the most she hopes for is learning to protect herself. But the fairylands are dangerous, and there’s so much more for her to discover…

Oh. My. Gosh. “The Quarter Mage” is the first book in Angelina J. Steffort’s breathtaking new fantasy series, and it did not disappoint! This new world Steffort has created captured my attention from the very first page. I also really loved Sanja as the main character. I think she’s stuck between a rock and a hard place, but she doesn’t ever give up. She’s not the damsel in distress type at all. Sanja is smart, resourceful, and wily, and I admire her for it. I’m also super intrigued by Mage Tristan, and I’m hoping to learn more about him in the next one!!! All in all, this was an absolutely epic start to a brand new series, and I can’t wait to see what happened next.

I think this is going to be one of my favorite series…it starts with Sanja running from a forced marriage to only be caught before entering the fairy territory returned to the palace where she is married to a tyrant her father the king murdered as well as her court…she is once again on the run towards the fairy lands for safety or is it? She finds herself robbed in the fairy land and with no means for support she is forced to steal to survive but once again caught this time by a human mage who brings her to the master mage…there she is offered an apprenticeship as a quarter mage…2/3’s into her adventure the story twists and she will have to save her new found family from the fairy king with no magical skills…this last third of the story will have your heart pounding…I’m thankful there are 3 more books to this my only concern is that she might end up breaking Tristens heart but I’m hopeful it might be she gains a fairy ally to take down her tyrant husband…Happy reading

Overall, a good start to a series. I'm interested to see what comes next for Sanja. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes other-world, magical, fantasy style tales with a dash of romance.

The world building is good for a first book without being overwhelming. I hope to see it fleshed out a bit more as the series continues.

I had a bit of a hard time believing the romance; not quite insta-love, but it felt like it was happening too fast for the characters. As a whole, I was very "meh" about the 'love story'; I suspect this relationship is a distraction from where the author ultimately wants Sanja to end up.

I do want more as far as character development is concerned. There was some, but not much background given on almost all of the characters. But this is to be expected from a "book 1". Character development to be continued...

Give it a try. :)

you have to read this!

Do you love magic, the fae, found family and a princess on the run? I have just the book for you!

I loved this world of magic and I was particularly fascinated by how the mages receive payment in the form of saved magic. This story is easy to follow along and I found myself racing through each chapter to find out what happens next.

On to book #2!!!

****4.5 Stars****

So, to summarize, The Quarter Mage is a tale about a princess, Sanja, who is forced to marry a tyrant lord that she knows only has evil intentions. Only his intentions are far more nefarious than she could have ever imagined. As soon as their vows are complete, her now husband and his men begin to slaughter her father, the king, and everyone from his kingdom in attendance, including Sanja herself. She awakes miraculously healed on the boarder of the fairylands and is thrust into a world where no human is safe except for the Mage and Master Mage. In this new land, surrounded my fairies with varying degrees of magical abilities, how will she survive these creatures that prey on her humanity, who are only further enticed by her vulnerability and lack of magic?

***Minor Spoilers Ahead***

I've never ended a story more conflicted about the love interest in my life. Our heroine, Sanja, has a clear cut love interest, Tristan, throughout this entire story. We observe and, more importantly, understand why they fall in love. He truly does seem to be a good guy, rescuing Sanja from the beginning and continues to do so and care about her all the way to the very last page. However, there's this "bad guy"-- only he doesn't seem all that bad. The Fairy Prince is certainly our antihero of the story and I'm 100% intrigued by his character and can't help but feel like he's hiding some pretty intense feelings towards our heroine that's motivating his behavior. At the end, it's also heavily implied that there's a lot more going on that the prince is aware of that he may be trying to keep Sanja safe from. With all that said, the part of me that has a bit more of a self-destructive tendency, really wants to see where her story could go with him.

All in all, it was a very well written story with a bit of spice sprinkled in that I truly enjoyed reading. I'm very interested to see where this story goes in its second installment and would love to read some of the author's other works in the meantime.

The writing has good flow, but

I kind of hate the MMC and I feel like the FMC’s judgement isn’t consistent. (Spoilers ahead)
.
The 2D MMC is so tired. Tristan doesn’t come off as genuine throughout the entire book, and even though we’re told his backstory from multiple sources, we still don’t know who he is or what he believes in by the end.
.
If the point the author is trying to make is that Sanja has bad judgement in regards to men, then the author succeeded only in muddying up Sanja’s character. Based on what we learned about Sanja in the beginning, we know that she has decent judgement bc we’re given two examples— the courtier and Cyrill. Based on that, Sanja should have spent a significant portion of her time, while thinking about Tristan, trying to justify his behavior towards her and excusing discrepancies between his stories and others. Instead, she has goo-goo eyes for him 24/7 for no good reason that I can see.
.
Why not give her more doubt about their relationship? Why give the reader and FMC all this conflicting information about the MMC and then make our FMC head-over-heels for him with no questions asked? Tristan told Sanja his life story, and then she heard a way worse version from someone else, and for some reason that didn’t set off any red flags??
.
I want to know where the overarching plot goes, but 75% of why I’m here is for the romance, and I’m still feeling confused and hesitant about the FMC and MMC at the end of the first book. There weren’t enough questions answered or asked about the overarching plot to override the bad feels from the 2D character building. I won’t be finishing this series.

I’m having a hard time rating this book because the story isn’t bad and the writing is decent but this story simply didn’t do it for me.

I listened to the graphic audio version of it and even though I think Jon Vertulo and Anthony Palmini are legends, even they couldn’t save it for me. Although the fairy prince by far was my favorite character and had the most potential.

I did not care about any of these characters. And where was the romance? The spice?? Tristan and San had less chemistry than two sticks rubbing up against each other. And San had little to no range of emotions or reactions that went past anger or fear.

I wanted to love this story. Even when the challenges got going I held out hope but by the ending I was like THAT’S IT?

Long ass book where not much happened?

No thanks. I was bored through this entire story so I had to keep taking breaks where I’d switch to another story for a few days as a palate cleanser before I could tackle another chunk of it.

I wanted more of her cousin. I wanted more of the fairy prince.

I wanted to love this story. I seriously doubt I will read any more of this series unless someone convinces me otherwise. So disappointing…

I only got 78% through this book and that was me pushing myself. The premise seems interesting and the writing wasn’t bad but the way the romance played out was so awkward. There wasn’t anything to convince me it was genuine or really anything beyond teenage love/lust and I don’t even think the characters are that young. It just went from 0 to 100 and I couldn’t believe it and it made everything after feel predictable and fake.
