Finding Quiet: My Journey to Peace in an Anxious World

Rate this book
We live in a loud, loud world.

Whether it's the criticism of others, the clamor of injustice, or the voice of anxiety from within, we are constantly being bombarded with noise.

So what does it mean to find peace in the midst of all the noise? Is there a way to acknowledge the struggles we face and learn how to manage the stressors and voices that trigger us while believing in the promises and goodness of God?

Jamie Grace has lived in the middle of noise for most of her life. Many know her as a singer with radio hits who has spent the last decade on stages and in front of the camera, but behind the scenes, she has struggled with Tourette Syndrome, ADHD, and an anxiety disorder for most of her life. But in the middle of both inner and outer noise, Jamie has learned how to manage the negative effects of her diagnoses, make the most of her strengths, and lean into the journey God has led her on.

A journey of Finding Quiet.

Over the years, I’ve not only listened to Jamie Grace’s music on repeat but I’ve also watched her YouTube channel and Podcasts. So whenever I saw she had a new book out, I was eager to read it. Her music and advice has really impacted and encouraged me in so many ways over the years. (Plus she’s hilarious! Seriously, if I’m having a bad day, she always makes me LOL) She’s just multi-talented!

This book is super inspiring. Jamie Grace’s vulnerability in her work has always been something I admire so much. She reassures me that I’m not alone and not as crazy as I feel sometimes.
Not only is it inspiring, it’s also relaxing to read (sounds strange, I know). I found myself picking this book up in the morning after my Bible reading and it really just encouraged me. It genuinely felt like having a conversation with Jamie Grace where she’s just sitting there giving me advice and relating to me.
I also loved how she included poems and some of her spoken words! It was definitely a highlight.

I don’t read nonfiction often but this one was one that I actually enjoyed and looked forward to reading. The reminder that it’s okay to sit in the quiet was empowering.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone!

As someone who suffers from Anxiety and Tourette’s (as does my twin brother) I found this book very reassuring. It’s easy for at least me to think that christian celebrities have it easier than us but that’s obviously not the case. I felt like Jamie Grace was talking to me and I found her words comforting. Thank you Jamie for this book! PS. I saw you in concert a few years ago and you were amazing.

One of my main “character growth” goals that I try to have constantly is to read more nonfiction and Christian living books, and I’m determined that 2021 is going to be the year of nonfiction. I decided to start with this one, because it is on a topic that is sorely needed in my life. Finding quiet is a subject that is always relevant in my life, and Jamie Grace has been someone that I’ve been vaguely watching on social media throughout the years, so I was really excited to read this book!

If I had to sum up this book in one word, it would be practical. What is covered in this book are things that can be added to everyday living, none of it particularly revolutionary, but that can be used to amplify one’s life just by following her tips. I highlighted a lot of passages, and there were a lot of quotes that were very applicable.

This book was really easy to read, with teaching that was easy to understand and apply. There was a nice blend of stories from her life, life lessons that she had learned, teaching, and poetry/written works that she had done. There wasn’t a particular stated audience that this book was directed toward: it could be relevant to a very large audience, as young as around 13, I would say.

There wasn’t a ton of scripture/biblical basis that this book was based around, so I would say that this is more of a “self-help” book rather than a Christian living book, but in general, it focuses on living for Christ. The majority of the discussion focuses on mental health issues, such as anxiety and ADHD, but it also has lessons based on everyday things, such as social media and friendships.

Overall, I really enjoyed it, and would recommend to anyone looking for an easy to read Christian living self help book! Some of my favorite quotes from this book:

It’s easy to believe that everything will be okay when everything is okay. It’s the moments where we feel like everything is crumbling before us and completely falling apart that faith proves just how powerful it is.

Where there is breath–there is hope. And that breath doesn’t have to be a soft and consistent one. Some days it may be a heavy and burdened one.

By choosing to live in the boldness of who I am, I am embracing who God made me to be. My circumstance is a part of my everyday, and I make the choice to embrace that–even if it looks different from what everyone else would expect.

When we allow our worth and our value to be defined by who we are and Whose we are instead of what other people think about us, we can begin to walk in freedom.

There is a Creator available to all of us, who creates in a way much greater than we could ever could. And when He gives us the privilege to be a part of those designs, we know that we have found our purpose.

I've enjoyed Jamie Grace's music for some time, so I was excited to know she had a book out. She's funny, encouraging, and inspiring, and so is her book. Grace's vulnerability is relatable, and this book will likely connect with most readers. It's nice to have the reminder that what you're feeling is not uncommon and you're not alone. The author's conversational tone make it feel like you're chatting with a good friend.

Grace discusses her journey, including comparison, relationships, finding purpose, and letting go. She candidly shares her experience with dealing with anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, ADHD, and Tourette syndrome. She talks about the challenges of marriage, being a new mom, and finding balance between those and a music career.

If you're struggling find a bit of peace amid the chaotic times we're currently in, this would be a great book to add to your TBR pile. It's through=provoking and encouraging.

Some of my favorite quotes:
-“We will talk through the lows of pain and self-doubt and tackle the lies we hear from others and the ones we tell ourselves. We won’t tiptoe around our insecurities, but instead we will face them head on as we press into tangible action steps toward knowing and living in freedom.”
- “Simultaneously, I will actively seek quiet. I will embrace the moments that make me feel weak and allow my mind to be pursued by the One who does His best work in my weakness.”

[Note: This book was provided free of charge by Bethany House books in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.]

In some ways, it might be expected that I would be at a bit of a disadvantage in reading and reviewing a book like this one. I have, after all, no prior knowledge of the author or her modestly successful career in Christian music. Admittedly, though, it was not as big a deal as one might think. After all, she is not a big enough artist for her musical career, which included seven songs that hit the top 40 of the Christian charts between 2011 and 2014 when she was signed to Gotee Records, which the author refers to as a "major label," which it might be considered in the Christian ranks. At any rate, while the author does engage in at least some efforts at self-justification, as when she says that it was her decision to release her third album independently because it was not well-suited to popular radio, rather than likely having that decision made for her by being dropped from the label because of a deliberately non-commercial direction. Even so, this is a really touching book and a deeply personal one in the author's discussion of her struggles with mental health as well as the difficulties of being a public person in the contemporary world.

This book is a bit more than 200 pages and it contains 11 chapters and various other usual materials. The book begins with a prologue and an introduction. This is followed by the author reflecting on the toll of daily anxious thoughts (1), the noise of one's feelings (2), and the desire, often unsuccessful, at fixing things (3). This is followed by a recognition that we are not enough on our own (4), and that we have to learn to let go (5) and overcome the desire to control that so many of us struggle with (6). After that the author talks about hopes and dreams (7), her desire to avoid competition as a musician and to celebrate community and encourage others (8), even those who might be in the same line of business that she is in, as well as her dealing with friends, enemies, and forced quiet (9). The book closes with a discussion of how we are often tempted to compare ourselves among ourselves (10) as well as a pondering of the purpose of the author's life (11), as well as a conclusion and acknowledgements.

Although I did not know anything about the author upon starting to read the book, it was easy to empathize with the author and with her struggles. One does not need to know or care about the author's blend of singing and rapping and of various genres to have a sense of compassion and understanding for the struggles of godly people in a wicked world. The author's frank discussion of her struggles with discouragement, with Tourette's syndrome and OCD, with her longings for a family and her cooperative efforts with her sister to record an album of material (2011's Christmas Together) demonstrates what she is about as a person, and that is something that is easy to appreciate and respect, not least for the struggle faced by the author in light of her various issues. One can likely think that the desire of the author for normalcy is what drove her recording this year of an EP of songs called "Normal," which, although they did not chart, represent again the author's longing for stability in the face of the world's craziness. And there are many people who can relate to that longing and appreciate encouragement from someone who obviously struggles with it too.

4.5* rounding up.
I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this book, but I've been listening to Jamie Grace's music for years and so I decided to give it a try. I was overall very impressed. Jamie Grace offers a well-written treasure trove of encouragement, advice, and actionable tips which are targeted at her music's audience but also, in my humble opinion, transcends it. Stories are utilized in abundance, yet never take over the book, and it tackles some tough issues with honesty, yet remains a somewhat breezy read.
Unlike some of Jamie Grace's other material, such as her slightly scatterbrained podcast, Finding Quiet is thoughtfully structured, with strong, cohesive and concise points.
This book seems to have a solid Biblical basis, although scripture is sprinkled in rather than being the foundation of the book. It's more of a self-help book than one of spiritual guidance. I didn't notice any blinding contradictions or flaws in its underlying Christian worldview, but it's definitely something that should be kept in mind as you enjoy this book. And if you've read this review so far, I think it's likely that you will. Highly recommended to fans of Jamie Grace's music, and recommended to everyone else who struggles with anxiety or drama.

The book was amazing! As someone who struggles with anxiety, it was great reading a book from someone who understood that perspective. I felt seen while reading the book. The book pointed me back to God and encouraged me to think of the big picture and why I should continue fighting. The structure of the book also made it very easy to read. It has sections for application/self-reflection along with beautiful poems. Thank you Jamie for being so open with us through this book. It was beautiful.

This book is so relevant in today’s culture. There are so many pressures in our world that cause anxiety. With so many noises vying for our attention it feels impossible to find the quiet. I appreciate Jamie’s honesty and courage to share her story and hard fought lessons to help us discover the peace she has found.

Observations About the Author’s Style and Voice

Jamie Grace, the author, writes in 1st person throughout the entire book. She starts out with her childhood and memories that she vaguely remembers. She makes some jokes about some of the stuff that she says throughout the book as well. One thing I noticed about her is that she doesn't use slang. She uses some verses from the bible when she’s trying to prove a point of some kind or to tell the reader something important. One example is:

“In his pain and confusion, Job continues to speak highly of God’s name, and expresses his desire to reason with God, acknowledge God’s sovereignty and honor in his life” (1;20-22, 13:3). And as the One who knows and sees all, the final word belongs to God, as He honors Job’s diligence even through his despair.

How the Book Changed Me and Who I Would Recommend It To

After reading Finding Quiet, I feel like I should change some of my ways and how I do certain things like finding and making friends that will stick with me through thick and thin. I would recommend this book to someone who is troubled by the daily problems that they go through. Maybe someone who is worried that they won’t fit in certain crowds. Maybe someone who is looking for a friend or someone to talk to.

Tourette’s Syndrome
A nervous system disorder involving repetitive movements or unwanted sounds. Tourette syndrome starts in childhood. It involves uncontrollable repetitive movements or unwanted sounds (tics), such as repeatedly blinking the eyes, shrugging shoulders, or blurting out offensive words. Treatment may include medication or psychological therapies. The symptoms are coughing, eyelid twitching, frequent throat clearing, learning disability, repetitive blinking of eyes, and stuttering.

OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)
Obsessive-compulsive disorder is characterized by unreasonable thoughts and fears (obsessions) that lead to compulsive behaviors. OCD often centers on themes such as a fear of germs or the need to arrange objects in a specific manner. Symptoms usually begin gradually and vary throughout life. Treatment includes talk therapy, medications, or both. The symptoms are fear of contamination or dirt, doubting and having difficulty tolerating uncertainty, needing things orderly and symmetrical, aggressive or horrific thoughts about losing control and harming yourself or others, and unwanted thoughts, including aggression.

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)
A chronic condition including attention difficulty, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness. ADHD often begins in childhood and can persist into adulthood. It may contribute to low self-esteem, troubled relationships, and difficulty at school or work. The symptoms are aggression, excitability, fidgeting, hyperactivity, impulsivity, irritability, lack of restraint, and persistent repetition of words or actions.

Description of the history and impact of the book and its author
The book was published on October 13, 2020. The book hasn’t been out for long, but I’m sure it has made a lot of impact on people worldwide, maybe even changed people's lives. Jamie is a two-time Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, and actress. She is diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome, OCD, ADHD, and anxiety at a young age, Jamie actively advocates for joy, wellness, and mental health through the lens of music, film, and faith.

In Finding Quiet, Jamie Grace opened up about her journey in dealing with the busy noise of a music career and how she was able to find quiet and peace. In the book, she shared how she has become a Christian recording artist and how she loves to sing, play instruments, and produce music. She also explained about how she struggled with an anxious disorder, Tourette Syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and ADHD and was diagnosed at age eleven. She revealed how deep her anxious is and how she felt silence meant she wasn’t loved or people don’t like her. She explained how she struggled with texting and sometimes feeling like if she replies too soon, she is being anxious and if she takes too long people might think she doesn’t care about them. She opened up about how she tried medication from nine to fifteen. She had major challenges with tics from her Tourette’s and they were becoming too aggressive and violent. The medication brought on new challenges and it caused her to lose her motivation and how she was exhausted most of the time. So eventually, she stopped it and then again in her twenties, she tried antidepressants medication again to help her cope with going on tour and being a full-time college student. She also tried counseling and she shared her experiences she faced along the way. She shared how she learned to rely on faith in her Creator and His strength and praying. Throughout the book, she looked at how she was able to find peace and she gave tips and encouragement to readers on how to enjoy the quiet and to let go of whatever is weighting us down.

I would recommend this awesome book to anyone who has listened to Jamie Grace music and they will greatly enjoy the book. Even if you don’t listen to her music, you will still be able to connect with the book and get something from the book. I immensely loved how she opened up about her personal struggles with anxious and Tourette Syndrome. I believe people will be able to relate to her story and with listening to her songs I wouldn’t have ever knew that she struggled with all of these issues without reading this book. I also love how open she was in sharing how she went from an indie artist to a record label and then back to an indie artist. I liked how she was open about not getting a call back after the meeting supposedly went very well with a major record label and the fears she experienced. I appreciated how she shared that later she learned that being an indie artist gave her a new freedom to again work with songwriters that she wanted to work with. It turned out to working out for her benefit. I liked how she encouraged readers that even through her failed plans, she learned a mantra and shared it with readers. She stated, “My dreams won’t always come true. My plans won’t always work out.” She reminded readers that they aren’t failures and we won’t get accepted at every school or job that we apply to and we might not get married or have a baby by the time, we thought we would have. But she reminded us that we can still have hope and learn to enjoy the journey along the way.

Jamie Grace's music and personal journey is a breath of fresh air. I was inspired by this amazing lady who is an overcomer and an old soul in a young body. She writes, “It’s never truly quiet. Whether I’m in the studio, attending an event or a meeting, performing, or doing an interview, it’s rare that I find myself embracing quiet, and for more than ten years this has been my reality.”

The author shares the day-to-day of finding quiet. She describes her journey in learning how to let go, dealing with friendships, comparison, relationships, purpose and more. She says, “We will talk through the lows of pain and self-doubt and tackle the lies we hear from others and the ones we tell ourselves. We won’t tiptoe around our insecurities, but instead we will face them head on as we press into tangible action steps toward knowing and living in freedom.”

I like how this author shares her experiences growing up, dealing with anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, ADHD, and Tourette syndrome, diagnosed when she was 11 years old. She talks about marriage, being a new mom and the challenge to juggle that and her career in music.

Jamie says, “Simultaneously, I will actively seek quiet. I will embrace the moments that make me feel weak and allow my mind to be pursued by the One who does His best work in my weakness.”
This is a thought-provoking, encouraging book you do not want to miss.

Our world is loud and crazy right now which makes finding a quiet moment very difficult. Jamie Grace delivers a wonderful addition to anyone’s library of little ways to find quiet when it seems impossible.

The world we live in today is loud. There is no getting around it, there is noise all around us, external and internal. How do we find quiet when we are constantly being bombarded with noise? Not only do we have outside noise but there is also so much anxiety we live with today. Jamie Grace is a singer, songwriter and storyteller with hits on the radio and breaks down what it’s like to conquer her own anxiety in this loud crazy world, all while living with Tourette Syndrome and ADHD. With these struggles, it has been even harder for Jamie Grace to find the quiet she needs to reset and recharge in order to survive and thrive in the world. Instead of focusing on the negative aspects of her diagnoses and spiraling down a “woe is me” mentality, she remembers that God is leading her on this journey and uses each moment as a lesson to grow and work on herself and help others through her music and other platforms.

So many of the things written in this book resonated with me. It can be really hard to take the time to just sit and be quiet. With so many avenues of entertainment and connectivity around us, we are rarely able to find that quiet. Smart phones and technology are a great thing, when used right. However, we can find ourselves going down a rabbit hole on social media and instead of enjoying ourselves we become depressed by what we see and hear and compare ourselves to these images. It can be a very detrimental thing to our mental health. At one point, Grace talks about taking an intentional break from social media and how good that can be for all of us. I loved the way she pours so much of her life experiences onto the pages and helps readers see that no matter your struggles it is okay to step back, take a minute for yourself and make sure you are okay before moving on. That moment of quiet, inner reflection can do better than almost anything else, and it is seldom taken advantage of like it should. Whether you are an introvert, or an extrovert, quiet time is essential to enjoy all other moments of your life. Readers that have enjoyed Jamie Grace’s music and even those that have never heard of her but are looking for thoughts on helping deal with an anxious heart would benefit from reading this. I recommend readers to take the time to work through this book and let it work for them as it is meant to.

With all that is occurring in our country and in our world, quiet seems to be elusive. There is so much talk and social media just keeps scrolling.

It was for this very reason, I picked up the book Finding Quiet by Jamie Grace. The author has struggled with and anxiety disorder and Tourette’s Syndrome for most of her life. Both have made it most difficult for her to find “quiet” in the midst of her day.

The book is an inspiring memoir in which the author shares her struggles with a transparency that acknowledges the struggles, and does not deny them. In that acknowledgement, she has come to learn how to manage her struggles while trusting in the goodness and promises of God.

A few of my favorite thoughts from the book are:

- “I’m able to hear the voice of reason and rationality, and I want to live a life where it speaks louder than fear and doubt.”
- “It’s likely that if we look into our own lives, we can see the results of God’s grace, mercy, love, truth – and fixing.”
- “I want to do better at knowing that God has plans for me … to put that knowledge into action and continue to exercise the muscle of letting go.”
- “We cannot allow the pain and heaviness of our present to outweigh the significance of what God says about our future.”

The book is an easy read as the stories are engaging. It will bring encouragement and words of hope on these days which can be hard and discouraging.

I most appreciated the reminder of the daily fight we find ourselves:

“Every day that we wake up, we are faced with the choice of pursuing our calling and our purpose, or giving in to doubt, negativity, and the schemes that are against the very thing we should be living for. We have to choose between chasing good or bad, dark or light, things that are evil or things that are heavenly.
What are you fighting for?
Who are you fighting for?

(from Finding Quiet by Jamie Grace, page 195)

The author chose to fight and find hope in and through her Creator, and her words will encourage each reader to do the same!

I remember the first time I heard a Jamie Grace song. I was volunteering in the children's building during second service at the church I had just joined a few months before. It was the second grade class and the leader of our group blasted Show Jesus. I can still remember the little dance that we made up for the kids, and it is one of those precious memories that will stick with me for the rest of my life. So, when I heard that Jamie had written a book, about quiet no less, I had to get my hands on it and read it.

Finding Quiet is such a great read! It gave me the opportunity to see Jamie from a different perspective, understanding the woman behind the microphone, a person who is struggling just like myself. I loved learning about the inspiration behind some of her songs, making them all the more special to listen to, and I love that everything she speaks she points right back to the Bible, which is so important. So many Christian nonfiction books these days sound good, and even give good advice, but if there is nothing pointing you back to the Word of God, then it is for nothing.

Quiet is a foreign concept in our society, with someone or something always fighting for your attention. Whether it's a partner, kids, social media, or just an electronic in general, there is always that itch to fill the nothingness. When was the last time you just sat in the quiet? I tried it a few days ago, and I was shocked with how uncomfortable I was. That's not good. Finding Quiet is a great resource that reminds me how important it is to get quiet, and to spend those precious moments with the Lord, and I am so grateful and thankful that I had the opportunity to read this wonderful resource. I hope Jamie continues to write, as she has such a down-to-earth style that really resonates with me, and I'm sure it will resonate with you too.

Finding Quiet
My Journey to Peace in an Anxious World
by Jamie Grace
Bethany House
Bethany House Publishers
Christian
Pub Date 13 Oct 2020

I am reviewing a copy of Finding Quiet through Bethany House and Netgalley:

Jamie Grace grew up in the 1990’s at seven she fell in love with Jesus. She talks about the peace she felt when she

In Finding Quiet Jamie Grace goes on to remind us that God doesn’t move any more or less in rooms because of their volume or lack thereof.

Finding Quiet is not a book about learning how to tune out the sound, instead it is a book about finding quirky while the noise plays on.

We are also asked to think about these three things , why do we hide our brokenness? Why do we bury our pain? Why do we cover up our hurt? Jamie Grace goes on to point out that for many of us when we face pain everything shuts down.

At seven Jamie Grace gave her heart to Jesus, when she was eleven was diagnosed with anxiety (as well as Tourette syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder). On a daily basis she experiences a great deal of anxiety, but she also experiences a great deal of Faith. She struggles with the fear of letting the other side win. It is Faith that tells her anything is possible. It reminds her to let the creators strength allow her to be made perfect in weakness.

In this book Jamie Grace goes on to point out that My earliest memories are loud, ambient, and full of racing and anxious thoughts. They are flooded with fear and insecurity. Low self-esteem. Significant self-doubt.

We are reminded too that God is the one who fixes things. In this book we discover what it means to find peace in the midst of all the noise? It asks if there’s a way to acknowledge the struggles we face and learn how to manage the stressors and voices that trigger us while believing in the promises and goodness of God?

I give Finding Quiet five out of five stars!

Happy Reading!

What a timely book for all that is going on in the world today! With a pandemic, election, hurricane season and so much more, it is increasingly difficult to find quiet. This is something that Jamie Grace knows something about, especially in a field where she gets paid to be loud. I had only known of Jamie as a singer, but really enjoyed learning more about her through her writing of this book. One of the things that Jamie said that really struck me is that, "So many times we have the opportunity to face our pain, but we choose to allow noise to cover it instead." Instead of choosing noise to cover the pain, we need to embrace the quiet and see what God wants us to learn from that season, or experience. Another thought that she expressed was the freedom to "allow yourself to feel." Some of the chapters had questions at the end for journaling and reflection, taking the book beyond simply reading, to a more thought-provoking read, encouraging you to process and learn from what you are reading. As Jamie is encouraging us to find quiet, she is also giving glimpses into what inspired some of her songs. This is an easy book to read, with lots of nuggets of good information, and sprinkled with appropriate Scripture throughout. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is struggling to find quiet in the midst of chaos.

I've been a fan of Jamie Grace since she first came out with "Hold Me." As a young teenager, I admired her and followed her singing journey, although in recent years I haven't been keeping up with her like I used to. So I was excited to read and review Jamie's first book, Finding Quiet.

Jamie is very honest and open about her struggles. She has a hard time letting go, and just settling down to find quiet, which I think is very relatable. She's an encouragement, because it's only until you're honest about your struggles that you can begin to confront them, and there's a lot to learn from her in Finding Quiet.

Jamie talks here about loving gymnastics at a young age, until Tourette Syndrome got in the way, and how she moved on to a new dream. Movie nights made special by dad. Writing songs and putting her heart in the lyrics. Unplugging and learning to love quiet. She pours out her heart into the words she writes, and you can tell it's her hope and prayer that others will read and be encouraged by her struggles and accomplishments.

I'd definitely recommend this book to a long-time fan of Jamie Grace, or just to anyone who wants encouraged on how to let go and seek God in the quiet.

I voluntarily received this book from the publisher in order to write an honest review. All opinions are truly my own.

Finding Quiet has been on my shelf for some time. As life got busy, I found myself picking this up on a whim to clean up my Netgalley shelf. Also, on Hoopla as an audiobook I found out.

This book has a great premise. I love the way Jamie Grace tells her story of Finding Quiet. She is so authentic and relatable as she brings up different areas, struggles, distractions in life. There were so many great points brought up in this book with how we approach situations, relationship, most importantly ourselves. Largely emphasis of being authentic and accepting of ourselves as we journey through life.

I would have loved to read this book as a young adult, so much of it is about how we interact and Jamie's wonderful insight of 'if I would tell my younger self something'.

The book is as the title states broken out into different topic areas for life. I loved the scripture throughout the book and found it to be pointing to Christ.

There were some thought provoking points made on health, competition, and how we must seek quiet in every area of ourselves. I loved getting Jamie's background in her own health struggles and gaining a different perspective. While I didn't agree with all points made, I found it a valuable read.

Thank you to Netgalley and Bethany House Publishers for an ARC copy for my honest review.

Finding Quiet by Jamie Grace...first if you don't know who Jamie Grace is, find out. You will love her personality. She was a You Tube star long before You Tube was as popular as it is today. I mean, after all, she invited everyone to her wedding! We have loved and adored Jamie Grace ever since her hit Hold Me. We have seen her in concert, met her in a "fan line" and watched her in a movie. My daughters have looked up to her and her instagram stories are entertaining.

In Finding Quiet, Jamie shares some of her struggles throughout life, including being in the spotlight at a young age, her mother's health issues, waiting on God's timing for her husband, and her Tourette's Syndrome. Jamie is honest in her journey and shares much of it.

Jamie also shares how to tackle and have grace in many of those challenges. How to seek Christ and how to live for Him in this loud world. Jamie's situation may not be like yours, but she offers practical advice and tips on how to think of creative ways to go through such situations.

Yes, I'm older than Jamie and have lived more life, but her thoughts, ideas and perspectives were valuable and insightful. I was given a free copy of Finding Quiet from the publisher for my honest review, which I was happy to do. I would recommend this book!

I believe in the power of testimony, and this autobiographical book testify's to God's work in Jamie's life in the midst of the noise and the challenges life has thrown at her, especially several diagnoses that have impacted her life since she was a child. The world is loud. The inside of our heads is loud. We can all use a little help finding quiet and through Jamie's story, she leads us there. Addressing various aspects of life and how we interact with life, Jamie takes the reader through how she has learned to find quiet in the Lord and in the midst of all the noise from within and without.

This would be a great book to read through with a small group of young women, teens - thirties, and especially those who deal daily with anxiety, depression, ADHD, or other mental or physical health struggles. It would also be a great gift for a friend you know is struggling. It is an easy read (not inaccessibly theological or even really overly "Bible-y"), but definitely directs the reader to seek God for peace in an anxious world.

Jamie is famous! Jamie is also real! Her authenticity in this book will be an encouragement to many in their life and in their faith.

Finding Quiet is one of the best books I have read in 2020. I have been a fan of Jamie Grace and it was nice to learn more about her life and the things that she goes through on a daily basis. Being a person that deals with anxiety and panic attacks, it was refreshing to see to see a practical, Godly, and Biblical approach on how you could deal with these things and to know that I am not the only one that goes through these things because Jamie deals with them too. The book is full of sound sage advice and wisdom. I appreciated the tips that were in the book and how they were presented and laid out in the book. I loved that Jamie Grace made it clear that it is ok to have anxiety and other things wrong with you and still be a Christian and that it doesn't make us any less of Christian. I recommend this book to everybody--especially those dealing with mental health problems and those working in the mental health field. Thank you Jamie Grace for writing this book and sharing your testimony with the world and being unashamed about it! Thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for the opportunity to read this book! (This review is also on GoodReads.)

One of my favorites things about reading is hearing and connecting to the author’s voice through the writing. Jamie’s writing is so vulnerable and personable. It carries such a casual tone which makes her words feel so tangible. When I’m reading this book, it feels like I’m sitting down on the front porch with Jamie, and we’re just having a conversation. She’s open and honest with her audience, and the authenticity of her writing encourages the reader to really engage with each page.

We all deal with anxiety to some degree, and no matter how anxiety impacts you personally, this book will surely resonate with you. Jamie opens up the discussion of mental health through a practical, Christian lens, by sharing her own personal experiences. From reading her book, I’ve been relating to so much and realizing a lot about my own heart and mind. This book is such a blessing to me as Jamie shares her journey to finding quiet even when the world seems so messy and when our personal lives seem overwhelming. I truly hope you check this book out and soak in the goodness!
