A knife my antique-dealer mother bought at an estate sale holds the memories of a terrified young woman about to be abducted by a werewolf.
You see, I’m a psychometrist. I can read the memories people leave on the objects they touch. And this ability gets me into a lot of trouble.
I feel obligated to save the young woman before she is killed. And it turns out that she’s not the first woman this shifter has taken. Nor will she be the last. The others are turning up dead.
I’m a member of the supernatural Memory Guild, but I’m no detective. (I do, however, have a sexy detective helping me.) I’m just a middle-aged innkeeper with a 300-year-old bed-and-breakfast, a witchy mother, and a trouble-prone daughter. All of them demand a lot of attention.
When you throw into the mix an evil necromancer raising the dead, and an ancient magical stone, well, things get wicked complicated.
And I have to solve this mystery before someone else is killed. Namely me.
Enjoy midlife mystery, magic, murder, and mischief, with ties to the Freaky Florida humorous paranormal series.
Ward is a Florida native and author of the the Memory Guild midlife paranormal mystery thrillers, the Monsters of Jellyfish Beach paranormal mysteries, and the Freaky Florida humorous paranormal series, all of which are chock full of psychics, witches, vampires, werewolves, dragons, and other bizarre, mythical creatures, such as #FloridaMan. He also pens the Zeke Adams series of noir mysteries. He lives in Florida (of course) with his wife, cats, and a demon who prefers to remain anonymous.
Darla Chesswick heads to her mother’s house which has been turned into an antiques business to accommodate her hoarding nature. She has high-end antiques as well as just plain “junk” because she delights in gathering stuff. Darla saw her car was filled with another load of stuff from an estate sale down the street. So Darla offered to carry it all in for her mother. Darla normally would have to wear cotton gloves to prevent activation of her psychometry power that has helped her investigate the truth behind murders through touching pertinent objects which yield the memories and emotions of any other people who have touched them. In this case, the cardboard would normally give enough protection so she wouldn’t need the gloves. But before Darla even touched the box, she felt a powerful energy, enough to make her gasp and step back from it. She felt anguish and terror coming from one of the objects inside the box. To be safe, she went to get gloves. Waves of fear struck her as she carried the box inside. Asking her mother to stay beside her in case she passed out from the intensity of the experience, she removed her gloves and began reaching inside for the objects.
Darla saw a young relative of the woman who died. She had come to find jewelry or valuables before the estate sale started. But someone followed into the kitchen where she hid under the table with a cleaver. He sniffed, then bent down and looked her right in the eyes before he dragged her out and took her away. His face is not human. It’s a wolf, hairy, and it was smiling!
Darla feels obligated to save the young woman if she hasn’t already been killed. Apparently this wolf has taken other women as well… and they all turned up dead. She will need help with this investigation. Can she track down the kidnapper/killer? Can she solve the mystery before she ends up being the next one killed?
The plot is well-written (as I have found all of this author’s stories are) and will easily hold the reader’s attention as Darla searches for clues to find the murderous shifter. Can she find the answers she needs? Or will her ability take her off into more trouble than ever? You will find this to be an enjoyable cozy mystery with the right balance of suspense and intrigue, and a touch of black magic to keep it unpredictable. Grab your copy and follow along in the mystery!
A Wicked Touch is the third book in the Memory Guild series.
Darla is running a nearly 300-year-old historic bed-and-breakfast in San Marcos, Florida that is full of ghosts, gargoyles and other supernatural things; Darla has the psychometry power to read the memories that people leave on the objects they touch. After Darla touched a knife that her mother bought at an estate sale and got the memories of a young woman about to be abducted by a werewolf, she feel the need to help rescue the woman. Darla and Samson the handsome werewolf detective will need to figure out how to catch this serial killer and the necromancer before it's too late.
I really enjoy this book, it's fun, full of mystery, suspense, magic, paranormal, adventures and romance. I highly recommend it to all the paranormal cozy mystery fans. It is very entertaining and I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Darla is a wonderful lady, trying to mind her own and run her little bnb to just get by... oh, and trying to Not get killed by anyone, including werewolves, even when they are dead and brought back to life! I really liked how in this episode, Darla was able to do so much more by herself. Then there is the double-edge sword of finding out that her daughter was lucky enough to get the witch gene instead of her, she only has the ability to read things... however, that is also a way to bring the family together! This was a great read, and left open for the next one... what will happen with her and her husband Cory who just dissapeared, and there are clues that he is being held by a Wizard and trained,.. but, how might that work? Thank you Mr. Ward Parker for another great story continued!
Imagine shuffling priorities of opening an inn, being a mother to a young adult who really didn't leave the nest ( she just moved in with grandmother) and learning to harness her new powers. Reaching middle age has never been more interesting. This is an excellent series to sit back and enjoy.
This book is the best in the series (so far.) Darla Chesswick is like most of us; we just want to help others. But in trying to help, she gets caught up in intense situations. There’s no guessing what’s going to happen next. I love the humor, which most women can relate to; we kind of make fun of ourselves, but we’re accepting of ourselves. I like her maturity. Even though it’s a fantasy, it’s fairly believable. It was fun and exciting to read, and I’ve pre-ordered the next book.
This is a great book! I’m really enjoying this series! Another harrowing adventure, just so much fun! I can’t wait for the next book! But hey, where is the vampire that lives behind the fridge? Lol. Thank you for a great read!
One of the best of this type I've read in quite a while!
Great continuing story line, and fantastic characters . Looking forward to the next book in the series and hope it won't be the last which I'm sure it won't be as there is still so much to tell.
This is a brilliant read. Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and action with wonderful world building. Can't wait to read what the author brings out next. Recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
4 Piranhas Would Be Impressed By My Savagery Stars
A Wicked Touch is the third book in the Memory Guild series by Ward Parker.
This books plot took a deep dive away from anything remotely normal or sensible, straight into the eclectic and weird territory. But the author managed to play it off very well in this realm of fantasy fiction. The combination of werewolf serial killer and necromatic sorcery was a touch of genius.
When Darla stumbles upon a cleaver in her mothers recently load of miscellaneous antiques that hold the psychic energy of a kidnap victim, I did not expect the twisted tale and journey she would encounter. So many victims tied to this miraculously alive killer.. Every moment she spends reading the trauma they experienced at his, the further connected she feels to them. Having to live through their terror and pain.
Cervantes seemed weirdly attuned to the Paranormal aspects represented in the inn. Finding the only two ghosts inhabitants like a heat seeking missile. Terrorizing the lone living stone gargoyle among the four that hold the fireplace up. That he's somehow promised to be Cory's familiar when he comes back from the In Between is a surprise I wasn't expecting.
That ties into my curiosity for Darla's romantic interests. Her and the Detective Werewolf seem to have some serious chemistry building between them. Which I would be all for her exploring, if she was in fact not still married to her missing husband. That he's potentially being held prisoner in the In Between by a warlock kind of heaps the guilt on heavily, for even considering our danger bait of a heroine with anyone else. Although, I do wonder if her husband will come back the same man.. Especially, now that he has Wizard potential?
I am however excited to see how her daughter's magic presents itself, and whether she will invite her own familiar in with her newly acquired magic abilities? Now that she's working with her mother at the Inn, we should have a front row seat to any occurrences as they pop up.
Darla reads the memories from a knife her mother bought at an estate sale, and she knows she needs to be on the case. The knife holds the memories of a woman attacked by a werewolf, and Darla just wants to make sure the woman is alive and well.
In the third installment of the series, Darla is taking more risks than ever before. Technically a cozy mystery, this book is darker and has more gruesome scenes than your typical cozy mystery novel. Another difference from regular cozy mysteries is the paranormal aspect. The werewolf in question is some kind of serial killer, and scenes that are usually left out from novels of the kind are present here, with bloody bits and all. It’s something I don’t mind, but I wonder if these books will work well for fans of classic cozy mysteries.
The story was intriguing and well-paced. While the second book had a parallel storyline about Darla’s lost husband, we’ll have to wait to know more from him. This book was mostly about the murder mystery and Darla trying to sort out her feelings towards the sheriff, and the guilt since her husband is still alive.
Madeline Mrozek delivered a fantastic narration. All her characters sound distinct and count with differentiated personalities. Mrozek is incredibly talented in bringing characters to life. Her voice is clear and her audio production skills are also top-notch.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
I just finished listening to A Wicked Touch: Memory Guild, Book 3 by Ward Parker, narrated by Madeline Mrozek. While it can standalone, you will enjoy it much more if you start with Book 1. Memory Guild is such an awesome series! Parker's writing is so engaging. I absolutely love the storyline and characters, all of which are well-developed and super entertaining. I have no doubt that both readers and listeners will enjoy this book and series very much. This isn't even my usual genre, but Memory Guild has quickly become one of my favorite series to listen to!!
Mrozek's narration is off-the-charts amazing. She definitely made my overall listening experience that much better. She brings the characters and events to life in a way that reading alone cannot. She's also really funny! I love all the different voices she uses, and I actually feel like she is the characters themselves, rather than a narrator playing each part. For these reasons, I highly recommend the audiobook over the Kindle or print versions. You're going to love listening to her.
A Wicked Touch: Memory Guild, Book 3 by Ward Parker, narrated by Madeline Mrozek is very deserving of 5/5 stars across the board. Fans of the genre, as well as those looking to give something new a try, will not go wrong with this one! I'm confident you will love it and be hooked on this series, just like me!
Thanks for reading my review. I hope it was helpful. Happy listening! :-)
A Wicked Touch: A midlife paranormal mystery (Memory Guild Book 3) Our protagonist Darla is a member of the supernatural Memory Guild. In this novel Darla touches an antique knife that holds the memories of a terrified young woman about to be abducted by a werewolf. She feels obligated to save this young girl but he really has no detective skills so she calls upon a police detective to assist her in the case. If she does not find this killer she herself might be the next victim! This novel kept me spellbound from page one to the very last word! The tension and relationships are beautifully written and will keep readers coming back for more. I got chills up my spine more than once. I can't wait to see what happens next. I gave this honest, voluntary review after being given a free copy of the novel.
Great imagery and storytelling! A really fun series about a lot of different individuals with paranormal abilities narrated by the newest owner of a historic inn in Florida. Darla has only recently come into her psychometry talent when she passed the hurdle of menopause but has had some telepathic receptive abilities since childhood. She comes up against a knife that was used by a victim in a crime and tells her friend the local police detective about it. Oh yes, and he's a werewolf. Things definitely go downhill from there. Loved it! Madeline Mrozek has the monumental task of narrating the story and giving identities to the cast of many while managing to keep from snurfling out loud! Besides, her delivery is so great that I can listen at whichever speed suits the tasks I'm up to at the time.
3 pages into this book, I thought it would be a cozy paranormal 'Something.' One full chapter in and I knew it wasn't a romance. By the time the werewolf got his claws into the second victim, it was obviously a horror/mystery - but the cozy tone persisted. The more graphic it got, the more that bothered me. I finished the book, and the juxtaposition of tone and subject matter never let up. Some readers will like the cozy "just us supernatural middle-aged small-town sleuths" and some folks will like the graphic horror/scary hunt for the evil supernatural killers. Actually, I'd have liked either - I read both genres - but they go together like chocolate and onions. This is my totally voluntary, slightly queasy ARC review.
This is such an interesting series, With Darla's ever increasing power of psychometry increasing she takes great pains to avoid touching things that may pull her in, but when she inadvertently touches some cutlery the vision she has is harrowing and she is left to try and find the red head in the vision being kidnapped. This is intense but interesting Darla is still running her Inn, but she is also running around trying to find the missing red head, trying to find out who she is as no one seems to be missing her. She must utilise everything she has in order to find her, especially when her efforts are noticed and her friend is taken. A lot of action but its written well. Highly recommend
Wow - this author crafts a great story that flows perfectly. Characters are well-described and pace is about perfect. The story is interesting, with seemingly real characters and without excessive emphasis on the characters "perfect features" or how much money they have. They have real challenges with real-life jobs and a bonus of some magic/witchy skills, also not excessive. Interesting twists with the "in-between" and a suddenly appearing door, a message from a long lost love with "lip gloss", a skill that could only be described as dangerously effective with danger to the main character and possible danger (or save) to those affected. This author writes so so well and keeps me coming back. Now on book 4!
read books in order A very twisted, multilabel layered adventure for Darla. Who knew a small rock would save her life? The old silver is never fails to be amazing, healing, pretty, as well as very deadly to a lot of paranormal. Learning to use her gun, would come in handy to keep close. Very good twist the person she was giving shelter to, Was brave enough to save her life, as well as herself, From the monster she was living with, money indeed Can be a double bladed sword. So will Darla get her compact back? What will Stephanie’s powers be? A purple crest moon shaped “birthmark”. Cant wait to find out.
Darla and her family are strong with the witch line, but even though it skipped her, she still has powers she uses to help others. One part of the story I really liked was about the captain and the ship that went down in 1863. The awakening of her daughter to magic was also great. The characters are well defined. The storyline had plenty of surprises, twists, craziness, and mystery. Loved the ending and Cervantes, their cat familiar.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I feel so bad for our heroine, Darla! Menopause kicked her newest talent, psychometry, into high gear and tossed her in the deep end with no instruction. At least she now seems to be getting the hang of things now. But now that she is getting more into the paranormal world, the bad things keep gunning for her! Good thing she has a good head on her shoulders, at least for now.
Parker has brought history and magic to life in this series, and I am loving it to death! I just cannot wait to see how this all takes off in the next book!
The previous books in this series had me wanting more. They had dark parts balanced by light parts. This book was dark with only a few tiny glimmers of light. The characters seemed to have become more two dimensional. If there was romance blooming with the sheriff, it was well hidden. Bringing up the missing husband is not intriguing, it is annoying. The mother is just self centered. I am sad that this series has jumped the shark.
It goes to show how pleasurable the Memory Guild books are when you consider that this is the fourth one (including the novella) I’ve read since discovering them earlier this week. In this one Darla and her various allies encounter necromancers, reanimated serial killers, more black magic and don’t forget Florence the sentient gray parrot. Ward’s books are entertaining, captivating, well written and a great escape from the banalities of this modern world.
There are some truly weird people, dead and alive, in this book. It was a good mystery wrapped around magic with serial killers as the focus. Plus, now the missing husband is possibly still alive. It’s going to be really hard for her to date Sampson, if her husband shows up!
The best book of this series up to now. Our heroine, Darla has reluctantly developed a bit of diplomacy and tact. Her relationship? with the detective has grown to a warm partnership. Her friends, family and group members are starting to gel. The assignments get more complex. What's next?
Entertaining mystery. Some scary parts, but not to the point where I could not read anymore of it. Just enough to give the reader a hint of the bad things happening, but not enough to make me quit. I like paranormal cozies. This one is just on the edge, but I have to say that I liked it.
I love the characters in this book. Some things sound a bit far stretched. But once you let go and dive in. You will enjoy it. I'm a guy, and I love action movies. This book has action and magic. It will be hard to put this book down. I like the fact that you can follow the book while my echo dot reads it. I'm looking forward to the next book.
