This book taught me that Durrell's third wife probably wrote The Alexandria Quartet... I think both authors were writing each other's works, and this is really a cute collection of semi-autobiographical anecdotes of life in Alexandria during WWII for a young secretary with several languages and an Alexandrian upbringing at her disposal.
