Kiersten and her friends love ghost hunting; their idea of a good time is rooting around haunted houses. Tonight was supposed to be no different. Kiersten is hoping the night's spooky antics will take her mind off her troubles. This time they're exploring Creighton Asylum, but tonight it's not ghosts who threaten them.
Kiersten and her friends must try and survive as a very real killer chases them through the halls of the locked asylum. He knows every inch of the building by heart, and he has some nasty surprises in store for them.
Can Kiersten and her friends survive a night in the Asylum?
Asylum is a horror thriller by Micheal Chambers and narrated by Kay Webster. This novella focuses on Kiersten and her friends exploring the old and nightmarish facility, Creighton Asylum. In hopes to find ghost, ghouls and things that go bump in the night for internet fame. Instead of finding internet fame, they find something that bumps back and hunts Kiersten and her friends down. This thriller kept me interested from start to finish.
What I enjoyed.
Asylum reminds me of those 90s teen scream movies you see in the movie theaters. It has the tropes you find in these stories. Horny and drunk teens. The killer stalking his prey throughout the story, etc. However, that’s not a bad thing in this story. Chambers does an outstanding job in morphing those everyday cheesy horror tropes into something dark, thrilling and hair-raising.
There are graphic scenes in this story however, Chambers does an outstanding job at bringing them to life. So if you are squeamish, I have warned you.
With every audiobook lets talk about the narrator. Kay Webster voice acting really pulls you into the story and makes it seem like you are there with the characters.
What I didn't enjoy
The graphic scenes were well put together, but I feel Chambers relied on them heavily to bring out the horror element of the story.
What would have really made the story stand out was making the Asylum come to life. He touches on the Asylums past briefly. With Chambers’ creative mind, I feel he could have done a lot more to really bring out the creepy aura of the asylum building itself.
Overall
The Asylum is a great quick read or listen if you want a good horror story. Chambers turns something that reminds you of a cheesy 90s teen horror movie into a worthwhile horror story. Through Websters narration, I really felt like I was there. What really would have upped that creepy vibe was if the Asylum had more lore. At the end of the creepy day, this listen was an enjoyable one and Chambers has a genuine talent for the horror genre.
THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE AUDIOBOOK VERSION Very well written. This was a thrilling, suspenseful and intriguing story. I was completely pulled into these characters. The narrator did a great job, absolutely loved the voices used for the different characters, really bringing life to them. I recommend this book. I received this through audiofreebies, no review was required I am voluntarily leaving this review.
{my thoughts} - I sat on this review for a few days longer then I had wanted to but I wasn’t sure how to exactly portray in terms of my thoughts. This book is a nice and fast read, I read it in under two hours. It is rather graphical with its descriptions and was extremely well thought out.
Kiersten and her friends always go on ghost hunting expeditions. This time however, they find themselves in some real danger. Kiersten is strong willed, outspoken, opinionated and a very lively character. It was east for me to relate to her for more then the obvious reasons.
I had not thought that the book was going to end the way that it had, but I had thought it would be along the lines of similar. When I finished the book I was thinking the ending was similar to that of {the lovely bones: alice sebold}. I didn’t think that because of the typical reasons but because it reminded me of the book, but not enough to make me think it was too similar. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, whereas {the lovely bones} I regret wasting time reading. So please do not compare the two. It just wouldn’t be fair.
{reason for reading} - I was given a copy by the author in return for an honest review.
Asylum is basically every teen horror movie in novella form. If you’ve seen a few of those movies, there’s nothing new here, and it’s so short (99 pages) that there wasn’t time to flesh out the characters before they started dying off. I’ve seen a dozen horror movies just like it and I’ll see a dozen more.
Fortunately, I like this type of story. It’s not important to care about the characters. That’s not why I watch — or read — these horror stories. It’s the action, finding out who’s going to die and how, and who, if anyone, is going to make it out alive.
I was a little disappointed that there was virtually no focus on the ghost-hunting aspect of the trip, since that’s the type of read I was looking for when I first discovered this book. I love watching ghost-hunting shows, especially the ones set in abandoned mental hospitals. But of course it would be ridiculous to concentrate on hunting for ghosts when your friends are being killed off one-by-one, so I do understand why it’s not important.
If you like horror movies the way I do, this is a worthwhile read. If not, you probably won’t like Asylum.
Asylum is one of those books that you can’t set down once you get started. I can’t say enough good about this book. It was fast paced and intense the entire way. I Kiersten and her friends fancy themselves ghost hunters and set out on a new adventure into the creepy halls of Creighton Asylum. Only it isn’t ghost that they have to be scared of. I am telling you Michael Chambers, kept my eyes glued to my kindle for an entire day with this one. I actually found myself hiding from the kids in the bathroom just to get another chapter in! This book is definitely true to its promise and is an old school horror, leaving you with the willy’s. No joke. I will forever question every old man I ever see. And the ending leaves you with the chills. By the time Asylum was finished with me I was checking out MY windows for the lunatic!
