Up from Dust: Martha's Story

Rate this book
Martha of Bethany is no stranger to adversity. After her mother’s untimely death, Martha shoulders the responsibility of raising her siblings—quiet and studious Lazarus, and wild and rambunctious Mary. She finds solace in friendship and the beginnings of first love, but just as Martha begins to imagine a new future, hardship strikes again and her dreams crumble into dust.

Ten years later, Martha’s friend pleads for the new teacher, Jesus of Nazareth, to come and heal her husband. When Martha discovers that the carpenter-rabbi is connected to her past, she’s not sure she can trust him with her future. But as he continues to perform miracles, the invitation to believe becomes harder to resist, renewing Martha’s hardened heart, even as she faces an unknown future.

“A biblical story with a heart for today’s world, pulling out an array of joy and hope, sorrow and loss.”—Mesu Andrews, award-winning author

Up from Dust by Heather Kaufman
4 Stars

I really enjoyed this biblical fiction story of what it could have been like for Martha, Mary, Lazarus during the events that happened in the bible with Jesus. Part 1 is more about Martha's life and what things could have been like for her as a child, life with family, first love, etc. Then part 2 is more of the details of her life when Jesus comes and the events leading up to meeting him.

Martha is a character I found myself really relating to. She is always worried, helping others, upset, impatient --- ME! Conviction was hitting me in some parts of this book for sure. Seeing her relationship with her siblings was also very relatable and great to see. Inspiring to see Mary too and her reactions, decisions made, etc. Martha is always so busy doing all the things, yet Mary is listening and really paying attention and being patient. I find myself being so busy all the time like Martha in life without really taking the time to sit down and pray and listen to what God may be trying to tell me in certain situations. This book reminded me of those things in my own life.

I loved the second part of the book the best as it follows the events we know from the Bible. The scenes between Mary and Martha were great, and the big lead up in the end with Lazarus and Jesus that we know all about -- really liked how Heather Kaufman depicted those events. Martha's faith and devotion to Jesus highlighted was inspiring.

Despite Martha's worries and concerns, she is a woman of strong faith, hospitality and devotion, who demonstrates a deep belief in Jesus as the Messiah and this book did a great job showing that.

This was my first Heather Kaufman book and I am looking forward to reading more by her in the future.

When hurt happens (not if, but when) will we wallow in the pain and misery of it or will it cause us to reach higher?

This is a wonderful reimagining of Martha of Bethany’s life and a fantastic start to author Heather Kaufman’s new series, ‘Women of the Way.’

First, THAT cover! Right?! Gorgeous. The teacher within wouldn’t let me start reading until I knew the significance of the title, so I headed to do some research. I discovered that in Bible times, dust was thrown over one’s head to show worthlessness or shame and/or to indicate grieving. I knew going into the book that there’d be both tragedy and uplifting in Martha’s life. I was appreciative of the push to reread Psalm 113.

You may remember that Martha is the sister of Lazarus and Mary. The only thing I knew of Martha heading into this book was that she was a ‘server.’ I’d never considered the family dynamics, her friendship with others in Bethany, her broken past, or her growth and acceptance of Jesus. Very little is mentioned of Martha or her siblings in the bible, so Kaufman has fleshed out a ‘what if’ story highlighting the sibling’s dynamics and their time with Jesus. Readers get to ‘see’ Martha as a young girl, become aware of her pain at an early age, and grow burdened and worried as she ages. I was swept up in a compelling story showing her arc progressing from 65 AD as an 8-year-old to 31 AD as a 42-year-old woman. Time well spent.

I enjoyed this opportunity to see Martha as she might have been before meeting Jesus and then see the effect it had on her life and the choices she made as a result. It didn’t take long to see the relevance of the title. Reading about her transformation was inspiring and encouraging.

I loved the thought about growing into our inheritance, about beholding beauty even if it’s for a short time, the warning about the burdens of secrets, choosing our friends wisely, and that Jesus’ presence demands change.

My takeaway?

I’m thankful for the encouragement to (1) ‘reframe’ my wounds. There are so many things that can cause us to spiral in this life, and we can find ourselves “down in the dust”. I’m hoping to remember that in the heaviness of pain and disappointment, I can allow myself to be pulled out of the dust and rely on Him. (2) consider the nature of love on this Valentine’s Day. Love is definitely not a thief, but a gift.

The words I needed to read:

“Bitterness crouched at my door, gnashing its teeth for my soul, but through focusing on faithful stewardship, I could keep the beast at bay. I could keep my soul from becoming something unrecognizable”

“Loss can lead to bitterness. Knowledge can lead to pride. Both the hard and good things in our lives can take root in ways that produce death.”

An engaging story of biblical times as seen through the eyes of Martha.

I really loved the storytelling, knowing that it is fiction I loved a perspective of seeing how Martha grew up. Seeing her family, the heartache she went through and her first love.

I enjoyed how the author weaved in the stories of Jesus into each of the characters' lives. Seeing through their eyes how they might have felt when Jesus showed them miracles, hope and love.

*thank you to NetGalley and Bethany House for a copy of this book to read and review, all thoughts are my own.

Heather Kaufman's 'Up from Dust' is biblical storytelling at its finest, blending the lives of Martha, Lazarus, and Mary into a tale that is as vivid and emotive as it is effortless to read. Kaufman's finesse in writing transports readers directly into Martha's world, a realm richly painted with the hues of joy and sorrow, hope and loss.

Scripture acts as waypoints in Kaufman's storytelling, illuminating her fictional retelling with known biblical events. These markers provide Bible-literate readers with familiar reference points, guiding them through Kaufman's imaginative exploration of the lives and interactions of these biblical figures with Christ. Despite taking creative liberties, her approach remains reverent and respectful to the biblical account, infusing the story with depth and texture while honoring its origins.

Central to this tale is the poignant portrayal of Martha and her siblings, who endure the profound loss of their mother and the subsequent neglect from their father. This hardship profoundly shapes their self-perception and relationships, with their tangible insecurities adding a layer of authenticity to their characters.

'Up from Dust' is more than a novel; it's a heartfelt invitation to delve into the biblical world with a new perspective. I firmly believe that this book's exceptional quality positions it as a strong contender for major awards in the Christian publishing industry. For those yet to experience the richness of biblical fiction, or even those skeptical about the genre, 'Up from Dust' stands as a compelling entry point, promising to transform any preconceived notions with its profound storytelling and emotional resonance.

Selected Quotes:
"I am old now and gray, and my heart is full of found things. I have found the nettling burn of sorrow. I have found the relief of joy and the gift of love. I have found the goodness of God, and it is sweet on the lips like honeycomb."

“I confess that I’ve often not understood it. I’ve not understood the winding path Yahweh placed me on. All I do know is that it led me here . . . to you.”

"Abba’s harsh words had landed hard on me. They needed someplace to go, or I would internalize them, swallow them into my very being like poison."

“Loss can lead to bitterness. Knowledge can lead to pride. Both the hard and good things in our lives can take root in ways that produce death.”

"In loving Him with our whole being, our hearts will be fertile ground, ready to receive all that Yahweh ordains for us. So that when the hard and the good come into our lives, they land in soil that will produce fruit.”

"I hungered for Jesus’ presence and yet also dreaded it, for in his presence I felt uncannily seen."

Heather Kaufman's debut novel with Bethany House has put her on my list as a new favourite author. Up From Dust answers all the right "what if" questions that surround the relationship between Jesus, Lazarus, Mary, and Martha. And it adds a side story that brings a little more intrigue to keep you reading.

This first book in the Women of the Way series centres on Martha and answers all the questions as to why she might have been so focused on Mary not helping her prepare a meal when Jesus came to visit. You can read about this little interaction in Luke 10:38–42.

I loved the backstory of Martha and her family. It just made her frustration with Mary all the more believable. And it made Jesus' response to her frustration understandable. The love interest between Martha and Uri was a brilliant idea and tied in with so many of the lessons Martha needed as she grew in her faith and understanding of who Jesus was.

If you like biblical fiction, you need to add this one to your shelf! It brings the Bible to life with incredible storytelling and impeccable research. I can't recommend it enough!

I received a complimentary copy courtesy of Bethany House through NetGalley for my honest review.

3.5 stars. // If you've ever read the scripture or heard a sermon on the story of Mary and Martha from the Bible, you might remember being told "Be a Mary, not a Martha." This is a hard pill to swallow for some, as we have a true host and servant's heart. We think, "Someone has to take care of things. Someone has to be the responsible one."

In Heather Kaufman's Up from Dust, readers get a fresh look at this story and others from the Bible, following Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. We see a fictional account of how each character may have come to be who they are when we meet them in scripture. We empathize with and understand them on a deeper level, but most importantly, we see the heart of God in every season of their lives.

While the first part of this book was hard to read due to so many misfortunes happening in the lives of these characters, the second half of the book brought so much hope in Jesus. So many biblically-based life lessons are weaved through these pages.

If you enjoy biblical fiction and haven't checked out this rising author in the genre, I encourage you to pick this one up. Additionally, I hosted a book discussion for Revive this past month on the book if you'd like to watch the conversation back.

My first foray into the world of Biblical Fiction.

I was a little skpetical at first but really enjoyed reading this fictional story of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. It was just a pure and simple joy to finish off my day by reading a chapter or two. The author took some creative liberties but stayed close to the events in the Bible.

I'm not much of a romance type book reader- that being said I would just get going past the romance part and could guess at the ending.

Loved how the author made me feel like I was back in the time during this Bible story. The cultural aspects of this time was fascinating. The characters and Scripture came springing to life. I felt the emotions that Jesus and his followers possessed. I have always felt I could relate to Martha and her heart and in the book her struggles and victories became mine. Really loved how the reminder of how Jesus is a personal Father to us! 🩶

I will read the others in this series.

A stunning biblical fiction novel!

Up from Dust is the first book I've read by Heather Kaufman, and I'm looking forward to reading what she writes next. Her clear yet descriptive writing style fit this story perfectly.

Martha was such a sympathetic character. She experienced a lot of hard times throughout the book, and both her strengths and weaknesses were portrayed very well. The other characters were also well written.

The plot kept me turning pages. While lots of the story was fictional, there were several biblical events woven throughout.

There was one time where it seemed to me that God's name wasn't used in a way that was very reverent, but other than that, the language was clean as was the romance.

Overall, Up from Dust was a thought-provoking read that I'd recommend to those who enjoy Christian fiction and biblical fiction.

Reimagining such stories as are found in scripture is the stuff of my earliest daydreams. . .especially the stories of women in scripture. Here Heather Kaufman has stopped hard on one of my favorite to think about. . .hard-working, anxious, forthright Martha.

Up From Dust: Martha's Story catches up the loose ends from the men writing scripture and finds explanations for each, and weaves out of new cloth, historical research and human behavior context for the rest. At first Martha was hard to warm up to, surrounded by others more relatable, but in time, the bonds were found. The last part of the read worked my emotions most, the story most familiar and always sounding chords within. . .a lovely story to read any time of year, but feels especially so at the end of this troubling year (2024). All is not lost - hope there is yet. . .the way through is . . .through. . .steady on, Martha. . .(all the Marthas).

*A sincere thank you to Heather Kaufman, Bethany House, and NetGalley for an ARC to read and review independently.*

Up From Dust - Review 💛🪶🐑

“Beginnings and endings often collide, one with the other.”

This book is absolutely breathtaking!

From the first line of the book I was whisked away to Bethany, and experienced an instant connection with all the characters of this beautiful story. I was really able to feel all that Martha felt; I felt joy and my heart warm for the romance Martha had, I felt pain during some losses Martha experienced, I felt bitterness when Martha felt it, and saw the story unfold so vividly I caught my breath. Rarely have I felt such emotion in a book. Additionally, I cried more than once throughout reading it, which is RARE. As grace unfolded through this fictionalization of the true life of Jesus Christ and the love of God fleshed out in Him my heart swelled with love and gratitude for my Yeshua, the God I serve.

Heather’s writing is extremely engaging and beautiful, and there is a treasure trove worth of biblical truths sprinkled throughout this book. I am already eagerly anticipating the release of Heather’s other wonderful biblical fiction books, and her continuation of the Women of the Way series.

I don’t think I have enough words to adequately encourage you to read this wonderful book, but please do yourself a favor and read it! I cannot recommend this enough 🥹🧡.

This was a beautiful representation of the finding our identity in Christ through Martha’s story. 💛
Martha had a lot going against her, but like with us, Jesus met her right where she was. In the midst of her worry, heartache, and fear.
Just as Martha discovered, we are only fully whole when we give ourselves over to Christ Jesus. 🥹

I know we are only a couple weeks into the year. But I suspect this is going to be my #1 favorite new read for 2024.

Kaufman gives us a fictional version of Martha from the Bible, a Martha who is bowed almost double under the weight of guilt and sorrow and worry and fear. She's closed herself off from those around her, she's focused on working and doing and getting things done as much as possible, and she's... pretty much a picture of a lot of people I see every day. Just focus on tasks so you don't have to think or feel.

Then Jesus Christ steps into this closed-up, broken, heartbroken mess that is Martha's life. And, as Martha and her siblings Mary and Lazarus come to believe that, yes, this Jesus is the Messiah that they and all Jewish people have been waiting for since a few days after the world began... their lives are transformed. They are not "fixed." But when they stop trusting themselves for solutions, when they center their hearts on God and trust him to care for their every need, and when they stop trying to "be enough" in and of themselves, their lives truly are transformed.

It's a masterful piece of fiction with so much truth and hope inside, that I know it's a book I will reread many times in years to come.

I received an advance copy of Up from Dust from the publisher. I read the whole book, and my thoughts and opinions expressed here are my true ones.

I loved this book. Up From Dust is a fictional account of the lives of siblings Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, though the story focuses on Martha. I was amazed at the incredible story Heather was able to weave together while also staying as true as possible to the biblical accounts that we find in Scripture.

If you enjoy biblical fiction, this book was so rich in imagery and imagination, while maintaining key information that we know about these real-life people. While there were of course some creative liberties taken, the author’s love for and dedication to God’s Word was evident throughout.

Such a beautiful debut novel. I already can’t wait to read the next story! Highly recommend!

"Before I can share the many ways I was found, I would have to begin with the day I was lost…"

What a beginning to the powerful story of Martha. The past couple of years I have enjoyed reading Biblical Fiction. It’s always interesting to see how an author captures the essence of a Bible story and Heather Kaufman did such an excellent job. She truly gives you a peek at the “what-if” questions that surround the relationship between Jesus, Lazarus, Mary and Martha.

Goodness this book definitely tugged my heart. I teared up at the heartache that Martha goes through in this story and it gives you a possible idea why she may have been so frustrated with Mary. I thoroughly enjoyed the growth that we see in her throughout the book and how we see her eyes open to who Jesus truly is and we see her faith grow. The characters that help her do so despite them being fictional were so great in aiding her belief and strengthen my faith as well.

Goodness the portrayal of Jesus was beautiful and I couldn’t help imagining what it would be like to physically sit near him and be in his presence.

If you enjoy biblical fiction and authors like Connilyn Cossette and Tessa Afshar I definitely think this book and author need to be added to your TBR list!

Up from Dust by Heather Kaufman is an outstanding piece of literature. I have always been intrigued by Martha, Lazarus, and Mary in the Gospels. Naturally, I want to know more about this group of siblings and their uniquely personal relationship with Jesus. What a blessing to have been counted as close friends of God! Kaufman does a fantastic job weaving fictional “might have been” with well-researched historical and Gospel detail. I appreciate how Kaufman envisions an emotional and plausible childhood and young adulthood for Martha, Lazarus, and Mary. Kaufman does a good job crafting legitimate Jewish characters who could have lived in Israel in the time of Jesus who also feel life-like and pull at the reader’s heartstrings. My heart hurt so badly for Martha. Her pain runs deep. Many times I wanted to enter into the story just so I could give her a big hug and tell her, “I see you!” And her moments with Jesus…tears streaming down my face! These moments are so, so good. To know that Jesus sees you and acknowledges all you’ve been through, could anything be more satisfying?

This is my favorite message of the novel: Jesus knows our pain and suffering. He sees how all the events in our lives connect to make us who we are today. There is no “I don’t like you because you make mistakes” kind of judgement. There’s grace and mercy. And there is correction, sure, but it is clearly born out of love. I admit it, I’ve judged Martha for being “mean” to Mary in Luke 10. I’ve wondered how she could not get sitting at Jesus’s feet was the better option. Kaufman’s story, however, taught me what grace in the moment looks like by reminding me that a single moment is just that, and it is preceded by many, many moments I didn’t see. I need to be very careful when judging a moment, and a person in that moment, because I often don’t see the whole picture. But God does. Jesus speaks to Martha with compassion and grace in Luke 10. He isn’t yelling at her or scolding her like she is a recalcitrant child, but rather He is instructing her in grace and love. And I need to do the same. I need to see people as hurting people who are in a moment, and I need to come at them with grace and love just as Jesus does. What a wonderful reminder from a very exceptional story!

There is no way to do this book justice in one review. I have barely cracked the surface! Up from Dust is a wonderful story that will stick with me long after the final page has turned. This is a story not to be missed.

I received a review copy of this novel in eBook form from the publisher, Bethany House, via NetGalley. In no way has this influenced my review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.

“How can I begin to tell of the many things I have found? Or of the One who found me? I see His hand in my story like a weaver’s shuttle through the warp, steady and sure, pulling here, loosening there, doing the work necessary for beauty. How do I tell of His capable hands, the ones that rescued me?”

“Before I can share the many ways I was found, I would have to begin with the day I was lost.”

And so, in the prologue, ( I hope you read prologues!) we have the reason for Heather Kaufman’s imagination of Martha’s life long before she ever met Jesus. As with other great Biblical fiction, Kaufman takes a few verses and passages we know of a Biblical individual. These are not changed from Scripture. But where Scripture is silent, the author suggests possible life events that send Martha, Mary, and Lazarus on their life trajectories until they encounter Jesus. “Maybe she or he reacted this way because…” In the meantime, Kaufman’s Martha becomes so real, so human, you will sympathize, you will judge, you will hold your breath as you hold her secrets, and you will wonder how she survived growing up in her father’s house. You will begin to understand a woman’s plight in Jewish society in the first century. Kaufman presents challenging relationships well. Some romantic, some familial, some friend-based. You will sigh, you will cry, you will ask, “Why?” But hopefully, when all is said and done, you will turn to the Biblical story to check out what truth we do know, and you’ll never view Martha or her siblings as 2- dimensional again!

I received a copy of the book from the author and publisher, through Celebrate Lit via NetGalley, plus I bought my own ebook. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

Well my opinion is that this is a great story! It is a fictional account taken from a true Biblical story that has been written about several times, and one I usually pass up because of that reason, but I kept hearing about this book, so I decided to give it a try. I am so glad I did! It hooked me from the start, and focused on the Biblical Martha from Bethany, but did not only tell how Martha complained about her sister Mary not helping her with the work when Jesus came to visit them (which really happened), which is normally written about her. No, Heather Kaufman took a familiar biblical character, and brought her to life in an amazing story, one that was super engaging, well written, interesting, and held my attention all the way to the end. She kept it true to Scriptures, but shared her own ideas of what she imagined about Martha, and wove that into an amazing story...a sort of "what if" story, that I really related to, and really enjoyed! She made Martha real to me, and along with her brother, Lazarus, and her sister, Mary, the whole story came to life in an incredibly enjoyable way!!! So I highly recommend this book, and give it 5 stars, and am so glad I didn't pass it up!!!

The author exceeded my expectations.

The book was beautifully written. It felt like I was in there with the characters. In fact I read the book in a day.

The story made me appreciate the Bible story of Martha and her family. I saw family devotion, love, faith illustrated in amazing and mundane ways. My heart went out to the siblings. The story showed the inner workings of their hearts and situations and how they individually responded to Jesus. I saw God's patience with His children. We all don't come to Him the same way but He accepts us and refines us into the people He wants us to be.

This is the first of this author I am reading but it will definitely not be the last.

I received a copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.

I didn’t really feel as connected to the characters as I would have liked. I’m not sure if it’s her writing style or because I don’t really relate with Martha or Mary. 😂🤷‍♀️ I’m somewhere between the two. I enjoy biblical or historical fiction for the peek it gives into lives so different from my own. I thoroughly enjoyed that aspect of the story. I can only imagine getting to fellowship with Jesus in the flesh ❤️🤯 I know one day that will be our reality as Christians and Oh WHAT A DAY THAT WILL BE!! 🙌🙌❤️❤️. Martha is such an important character for us to learn from, but I’m afraid so many people miss it. So many times people get upset by the way Martha is portrayed. But they’re missing the truth that God wants us to learn from Martha’s story! Jesus was not condemning Martha for her service, but the attitude in which she was serving! Please Please don’t miss that❤️ Our service is the way we show our love for Christ and to others. If we’re serving with the wrong attitude then we’re missing the point. We need to make sure we’re serving the Lord because we love Him and not because we want to praised for our work. And we need to keep short accounts with God so bitterness doesn’t take root and we’re harboring harsh feelings towards those not serving Christ or not doing what we think they should. I hope that makes sense. I think this book is great for helping us see Martha in a deeper light and helping us to see ourselves in her. I think it would be beneficial for anyone to read to spark their interest in these biblical stories. ❤️

This beautiful book reminded me of that parable about a charcoal fire and how coals help each other stay white hot. Conversely, when a coal becomes separated from the others, it cools more quickly. Like the coals, we need to stoke the fire and keep our faith burning bright and nourish our souls with books like this. My love for Jesus and what he did for us on the cross brings me to my knees in awe and gratitude. I loved the sibling relationship dynamic, the writing style, and the incorporation and representation of Jesus in Martha’s story. I cannot wait for the second installment of The Women of the Way series!

I started this book on Resurrection Sunday and took this picture at Siesta Key Beach Sunrise Service on that Easter morning. The absolute perfect book to prepare your hearts for the Lenten season, but honestly anytime of the year 🤍

In Up from Dust: Martha’s Story, Heather Kaufman brought to life Martha of Bethany. In years past, the Biblical account of Martha tended to be told with a negative slant (“Be more like Mary who sat at the feet of Jesus instead of Martha who served resentfully”). More recently, church culture has backed off giving this woman such a bad rap, but some stigma regarding the well-known scene remains. In this fictionalized account, Kaufman infused the famous moment with such beautiful love and invitation that I wanted to cheer for Martha and for the positive representation.

Written in first person point-of-view, Up from Dust draws the reader straight into Martha’s mind and heart. From childhood through adulthood, the most intimate details and feelings were shared as the narrative dove deep into her traumas, experiences, and hopes. This intense investment made for an emotionally moving story, and I cried a bit for all the hardship Martha faced. Loss, grief, and brokenness permeated much of her life and family, yet Martha found hope in Jesus, the Christ.

Up from Dust: Martha’s Story by Heather Kaufman held a lot of sadness, but beautiful spiritual truths balanced the pain. Smooth writing and a flowing plot strengthened the book while the love triangle made me cringe slightly. This novel commences Kaufman’s Women of the Way series. Four stars!

The Gospels are accounts of Jesus’ life and ministry from his birth to his resurrection, but have you ever stopped to think about the stories of the people whose lives intersected with His? In Up from the Dust, Heather Kaufman does exactly that.

Martha and her sister Mary are two such people. Their brother was Lazarus—the man Jesus brought back to life! Kaufman’s fictitious account of Martha’s youth, her relationships with both Mary and Lazarus as well as other citizens of Bethany, drew me in.

The author does such a terrific job of painting Martha’s world that I cried with her and got frustrated with her. And when she meets Jesus, I also grew with her.

This debut paints such vivid pictures of Jesus as he became flesh, and especially of the day He died. I had to remind myself often that this was a fiction book, but Kaufman does explain some of her choice for artistic license in the author’s notes at the end of the book (which I always appreciate).

Fans of Mesu Andrews, Tessa Afshar, and Jill Eileen Smith should add this new author to their list of must-reads.

a thought-provoking exploration of the biblical martha, perfect for the days leading to easter!

in up from dust, heather kaufman fleshes out martha's history to give possible context to the glimpses seen of her in the new testament. martha's losses and heartbreaks all have an impact on her relationships with her siblings, the role she plays in their family and society, and ultimately, how she approaches a changing faith.

i enjoyed this perspective on martha. kaufman creates a world around her, full of expectations and challenges, with great detail, and i was fascinated how, page after page, she becomes the familiar biblical figure—but with interesting depth and emotion.

if you love biblical fiction—or just want to consider a well-known character from a fresh perspective—definitely pick up up from dust.

Up From Dust was such a beautiful read. It brought Lazarus, Martha, and Mary to life for me and gave me a bigger peek into their lives. 🌾🐑
.
Martha was a really enjoyable character to follow. Her story was painted with hues of sorrow, loss, hope, and finding joy after tragedy. My heart ached for her. Watching her find Jesus and the peace He offers was so beautiful.

The whole time I was eagerly waiting for Jesus to enter the story 😂

I never was a fan of Martha until I read this book! As a child, I was always taught to be more like Mary, not Martha. I loved how this book showed how there is more to the story.

This book immersed me into the world of Martha and I felt like I understood her so much better after reading this book. I loved all of the details that really placed you into ancient Israel. As the oldest child in my family, I was able to connect with Martha and the struggles that she faced.

There was a serene beauty in every interaction with Jesus in this book that really just showed the wonder of the salvation we have in Christ. I'm so glad I picked up this book because it reminded me of the assurance that I have in Christ.
