I have to admit that when I saw this book at one of my favorite book review sites, I thought it was going to be brain training like doing specific exercises to keep your mind nimble. I wouldn't really call this brain training, per se. In this book, the author shares his ideas about things you can add or eliminate in your lifestyle, food, and environment to help improve memory. In the introduction, he states that these are under-used, but they aren’t all as many people do meditation, declutter, or eat superfoods. He also states that these particular brain hacks, for lack of a better word, stem from his own use of them. Within the sections themselves, you get what feels like the author's opinion often backed up by studies. I read a lot of nonfiction books, and I see many of them refer to studies. This is one of the few books that does so while not sounding like a written academic paper, thank goodness! I do wish he elaborated on some points more, especially the ones I didn't necessarily agree with, like eliminating or reducing gluten products. Also, I'm not quite sure how he got the numbers for his book. The subtitle says this has 32 ideas, and each chapter specifically states that it has 9, 13, or 10 ideas to incorporate to help your memory. But the first chapter that is supposed to have nine actually only has three. So I thought it might be the action steps, but that didn't seem accurate either as that chapter had 10 action steps, not 9. So I'm not sure where he gets the 32 from or the ones in the individual chapters! There were some problems with grammar, punctuation, and usage, including a few completely wrong words. I did receive a PDF ARC copy, but a quick check on Amazon revealed that the mistakes persisted in the published edition. All in all, I did find this an interesting read on things that you could do or eliminate to improve your memory.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
The points were helpful and the information, though extremely basic, was supported with brief explanations. But there was a great deal of repetition and, in the end, very little substance.
Such a good read if you feel you are no longer excelling at learning like in the years past. Change is not always bad and learning new methods to better retain information and develop ideas of off that information is a great thing.
Challenge yourself to be better and to grow personally and professionally......Get the Book, develop from a proven learning method and watch yourself grow and advance.
I'm a current mature student at university and stumbled upon this book during self isolation because of covid. What a great read it was and at a time when I needed it most, half way through my first semester and have exams coming up. Now I know what I need to do.
