A young girl, abused, traumatized, and diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder struggles to survive while life-long antagonists seek to destroy her. The personalities stemming from her disorder divide her authentic self into Dirty Mary (the seductress), Savage Mary (the fighter), and Sweet Mary, the innocent personality she had before the traumatic experiences that still torment her. This story is inspired by true events.
Dirty Mary is an AMAZING book; a lot of real content to process and a true, fast-paced page turner. The content is not necessarily easy, but it is so real. Hopefully this book will create more awareness to the myriad of mental health issues that young adults and adults alike are navigating (to the best of their ability) on a daily basis. As a retired school administrator, this book really hit home. Were I still working, this would be a recommended read for staff; it would be a great read to educate staff on the realities of the home lives of many students. This book will stay on my mind for quite some time. It is very rare for a book to keep me awake when I am tired, but this book did just that. Highest praises to Danny Marvin.
This was a beautiful and sometimes heart-wrenching story that I learned was based on a true story. Mary is struggling with the demons of her past - childhood traumas that led to a diagnosis of DID, and Auden loves her so much, wanting to see her overcome her challenges and truly be the person he sees her as. Some of it is hard, some of it is triggering - it will make you laugh and make you cry, and it will make you take a deeper look at mental health while also appreciating those close to you in your life.
Quick read that grabs you from the start. Written by a teacher from the Pocono Mountain School District, Dirty Mary addresses the serious issues of a variety of abuses, mental health and how people can do desperate things when pushed by others.
It is well written with striking depiction and should be read by anyone who needs to take a look at the harsh reality some people face day in and day out.
It’s a story of pain, despair and loss but also one of love and that comes out in the reading.
Unfortunately, if you are a reader who doesn’t know the author, you will have a hard time getting through Dirty Mary. The book is written as though a middle school child wrote it. It had potential, but it was just so poorly written that I had to give it one star. I thought since there were so many great ratings that it would be good. However, it seems many of the reviews are from people who know the author.
Dirty Mary is a story that is unfortunately all too real and all too common. All though heart-wrenching and raw at times this book can still make one believe in true love and miracles. Read this book by Danny Marvin and know that it came from his heart and also know that stories like Dirty Mary continue to happen all over the world today.
I have known the author for a long time. He is an amazing writer and man. I would highly recommend both of his books to the avid reader. I’m currently reading it myself. Dirty Mary is heart wrenching and heart breaking but shows what some people go through in their lives and what we do for our family and loved ones. Definitely a book I suggest as a must read.
Danny Marvin has done it again! In an amazing story of true love, Dirty Mary tackles mental illness and addiction with plot twist after plot twist. Put this on your must read list now!
I cannot begin to describe this book. Sad. Scary. I could not put it down and yet it will probably give me nightmares. How can these things happen??? This book must be read!!!
WOW...I'll be honest and say I was almost reluctant to read the book for personal reasons. As a nurse, I've worked with children and adults with mental illness, addiction and those that have been abused...its never easy and can be heart wrenching. BUT every avid reader NEEDS to read this book....it will be an eye opener. It is very well written and you will get pulled in after the 1st page! It had my heart pounding with fear at points and anticipation!! EXCELLENT!! AND like many others, I lived in that area part of my life and enjoyed the local references author Danny Marvin made. Quite simply...BUY AND READ THIS BOOK!!
