کتابی مطلقا بی‌ارزش با ترجمه‌ای بسیار ضعیف. گول عنوان و ادعای مقدمه آن را نخورید. یک گزارش تاریخی چپ‌رو از مفهوم شهر که هیچ جامعیت و اهمیتی ندارد.

A good overview of the history of cities in literature. However, it is European/American focused with no reference to Asian or Latin American literature (and only 1-2 chapters that include African lit). Also, there are some notable typos (not just misspellings but incorrect information in the timeline at the beginning of the book where the wrong author is attributed to a book). These are minor flaws though and I think the edition does a good job of providing breadth, not only of genres within urban literature, but of academic frameworks (there is as much social science here as humanities).
I would recommend this as a starter guide to introduce the topic to someone with no prior knowledge, as it serves as an excellent jumping off point for further research (which, I think, is the book's intention).

کتاب «شهر در ادبیات» با اینکه موضوع جذابی مثل بررسی تصویر شهر در آثار ادبی قرن بیستم و بعدتر داره، ولی کتاب تاثیرگذار یا عمیقی نیست.
رویکرد مک‌نامارا خیلی توصیفی و تاریخی‌ه، نه تحلیلی. مک‌نامارا بیشتر مرور می‌کنه که فلان نویسنده دربارهٔ شهر چه گفته، نه اینکه ساختار یا تجربه‌ی شهری در متن رو واقعاً واکاوی کنه.
زبانش خشک و آکادمیکه اما در عین حال از ظرافت نظری برخوردار نیست؛ مثلاً اگر کسی دلش بخواد شهر رو از منظر فلسفه، روانکاوی یا پدیدارشناسی بخونه، این کتاب ناامیدش می‌کنه.
بیشتر به نویسندگان انگلیسی‌زبان تمرکز داره، و نگاهش محدود به سنت ادبی غربی مدرن می‌مونه.
این کتاب بیشتر شبیه مرور ادبیات موضوعی برای دانشجویان دوره‌ی کارشناسیه تا یک اثر پژوهشی الهام‌بخش.
