After joining the Order of the Crystal Daggers, led by her dauntless grandmother, Lady Penelope, Eleanora Svobodová set out to save her kingdom from oncoming devastation.
And she failed.
Following the attack on Prague Castle, Eleanora is determined to redeem herself. She sets out to win Karl’s trust while distancing herself from Ferdy, whose secrets and lies have done nothing to stop her from falling in love with him. As she struggles to let him go, questions about the mission and her mother’s past cause a rift between Amir and Lady Penelope and add to the growing discord between Eleanora and her brother.
But when a cunning provocateur arrives in Prague, Eleanora discovers there is an even more deadly game afoot, one that reaches into Amir's past and threatens Lady Penelope's future. Now, the members of the Order must work together if they are to uncover the true enemy hiding in Bohemia.
Can they work together despite their divisions? Or will their division lead to even more destruction?

“How do I know you’re telling me the truth?” The last thing I wanted to do was hurt him, but if I did not find a way to break free of him, I would risk doing even more harm.
Ferdy met my gaze with his. “I promise you this, Ella, that as of now, I will never lie to you again.” He leaned forward and kissed me again, and I stood there, letting him, desperately debating whether I could trust him or not. His promise burned through me, his words scorched into my being. It was so tempting to believe him, more tempting than anything else I had ever faced in all my life.
Freedom was only freedom if I could trust it to be true.

DNF at 67%!
I started reading Prince of Secrets and Shadows at the beginning of April and while I really enjoyed the first third of this book, I just started losing interest in the novel after that point. The writing is just way too detailed and thus the story really dragged on. It took me three weeks to get as far into the books as I am now but it’s been about two months since I’ve last read a page of it. I’m just not really interested in knowing what’s going to happen during the last third of Prince of Secrets and Shadows and even though I hate DNFing books, I just know that I’d have to force myself to actually finish the book which is just something I don’t want to do.
It's fair to say I didn't read the first book of CS Johnson's The Order of the Crystal Daggers series - I DEVOURED it. So you can believe me when I say I was all sorts of exploding with nerves and joy to begin this second part of the journey. Once again, Johnson did not disappoint. The surrounding political troubles, the rich variety and blend of cultures, the beautiful relationships (I'm in it for the brother/sister aspect ... sorry Ferdy) and the high stakes, were all woven together with a masterful touch.
How I'm going to wait for book 3 ... I don't know. Johnson and these cliffhangers *cue the pacing*
Content note: The romance got more frisky than I prefer and felt a little out of sync with the rest of the mood and character-thought processes ~
Her writing is excellent in how she writes a distinct emotional journey that is woven in with complex villains and swoon-worthy romance. Not only was this as awesome as the first book, but it was even more intense in the secrets and lies that come forth (or simply just "hidden"). In fact, I was so weighed down by everything Ella has on her shoulders, that I was telling her she just needed to break free from everyone and be free! Haha!
One of the most potent things about Prince of Secrets and Shadows (though the series has it as well) is the truths that Ella learns and struggles with. Her friends are so wise! I felt many of the things they shared with her were super relevant to my own life (the good and bad) and caused some good reflection. Some of the most thought-provoking conversations were with Harshad, who I really came to like in this book (another shoutout to the author for that because I wasn't fond of him at all before).
Now, my absolute favorite part was…FERDY!!! *fangirls* Yes, yes, yes to all the things that happen! (Well, almost all because there was a time I was gripping my book in fear of some developments.)
Overall, I could say so much about how good this story was and how the ending was epic. It's another must read in this spy adventure and I VERY eagerly look forward to the conclusion, especially with that ending (though thankfully it was not nearly as much as a cliff hanger as the previous book).
It's sweet and fun and full of suspense. I loved and hated writing it, and that's the perfect way to get it done. My editor loved it, and I hope you will, too.
Here's the blurb so far:
PRINCE OF SECRETS AND SHADOWS
In a time of chaos and confusion, one girl has chosen her fate -- and disaster has sealed it.
PRAGUE, 1870

With spies, secrets, and suspense, Prince of Secrets and Shadows is the second book in The Order of the Crystal Daggers, a spy adventure series from C. S. Johnson.
SUCH a great sequel that both answered my questions and created more intrigue!! The stakes are raised in Secrets & Shadows and one of my favorite parts of the story is how Eleanora disregards Lady POW and courageously chooses her own path no matter what the consequences. Amir becomes an ally to Eleanora that I really enjoyed. Ben is turned against Eleanora as they start to physically train and that was terrible but it also helped the plot move forward in a good way. Something happens to Ben at the very end that I'm hoping will help his crooked leg for the next book. There are a few new characters introduced in this story, one named Xiana that I loved and hope to read more about in Book 3, and one named Lumiere that I couldn't stand. Everything about him is suspicious and eccentric and just annoying. He also helps the plot but I just couldn't believe the scenes he's in!
I was uncomfortable with the kissing scenes between Eleanora and Ferdy, there are about three of them. The chemistry between them goes up a notch and even though this is still a clean read, I would say this book is for an older audience. There was also some profanity in the book, which is very minor, but that also makes me think it's for an older audience, it's in English and French.
There is a twist in the story that breaks Eleanora's heart, but I just knew it wasn't what she thought it was so I just kept reading and refused to believe it. I was right, but it does change the plot more than I expected. I also ended up hating Karl, the prince of the kingdom. The way he reacts to certain news was heartless and then he threatens Eleanora, everything about this guy is bad news and she HAS to pretend to like him. There is a boxing scene later in the plot that I loved. Eleanora actually gets to use her blades in this book, she is QUITE handy with them! I'm hoping Ben will get a love interest in the next book and I have an inkling of who this might be :) An evil character gets justice, I wasn't sad about him at all. Tulia isn't in this book very much and she ended up disappointing me, I truly hope there is more of her in the next book.
I truly recommend this series despite the few things I didn't agree with...it's wonderful reading about Eleanora and Ben's journey and how their faith is tested yet they are both becoming stronger characters that are so well written and realistic. Freedom is an important element in Crystal Daggers, something their parents knew little or nothing about yet fought for. I look forward to the last book and I'm grateful for authors like Johnson who write about courage through these characters.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. Opinions and comments expressed in this review are completely my own.
Not going to lie, I didn’t like it as much as the first but that was because this was more romance based than the first. I am not a romance kind of girl. She kept second guessing herself which I just found a little annoying. I know I know. She has to learn to trust her instincts and herself. But in my mind, she a kick-ass female, fighting for the truth.
Would have liked to have seen more detail to the fighting too, there was a lot of talking while fighting. Which is a skill in itself. I liked how Lady POW a 70+ old woman was kicking butt. I know that sounds weird but it wasn’t weird, it was amazing. Just because you are older doesn’t mean you can’t kick some butt.
(Disclaimer: I received a free copy from the Publisher. Does not affect my review)
I received this novel from Ms. C.S. Johnson as an ARC. Thank you! This novel was a great sequel from the first novel. Love and lies are a huge theme in this novel, which gives several plot twists. Eleanora (Ella) was saving Ferdinand (Ferdy) as there were a few explosions at the castle where the first novel left off. Ella learns Ferdy's secret and Ferdy learns hers. Ella is torn between her growing love for Fersy and her duty to the Order. She needs to keep Ferdy safe and leaves him, but keeps his secret, even though there are others Ferdy is keeping from her. Ella continues to train for the Order and attend functions in society, acting as a spy to get close to Karl and his motives for political agenda. Nothing is as it seems, as people Ella believed to be friends have loyalties to others. More players enter the game, bringing events and secrets of the past into play. Ella's mother plays a major role in her choices, for she wants to know and understand the mother she lost as a young girl and members of the Order see much of her mother in Ella. Ella will have to make some difficult choices that will impact the ones she loves in order to save others. I cannot wait to read the next novel in the series!
This book picks up right where we left off with Kingdom of Ash and Soot. Ella has failed and preventing an attack at the castle but is determined to make up for it. She starts to train more and tries to distance herself from Ferdy. All the while she questions if this is the life she really wants. She wants to honor her mother yet she also desires freedom. But there is a greater threat that needs to be taken care of by the members of the Order working together, if they don’t kill each other first.
I loved the first book and wanting to jump into Prince of Secrets and Shadows yet I was hesitant. It was the dreaded second book in a trilogy; would it follow like so many other books before? I had nothing to worry about; you jump right into this world where Ella and the others have changed, some becoming friends and others turning into enemies. Never knowing who is really there to protect you or kill you.
This is fantastic sequel to Kingdom of Ash and Soot. I love Ella, she is a strong young woman that dreams of freedom yet will fight for what is right. You never really know the real intentions of those around her and although you hope that things will work out and she will have her freedom you end up just hoping the best for her.
I strongly recommend checking out this series but I do feel it is better when read in order. Now I can’t wait to see what happens in the last book of the Order of the Crystal Daggers.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.
The first book left us wanting more and the second book delivered it. The plot is convoluted and twisted, leaving us to wonder if the good guys are really good guys and the bad guys really bad. The characters have a chance to grow and I love where they're going. This was a page-turner that kept me up well into the late evening. Looking forward to the 3rd book in the series.
Dozens of authors write fantastic first books in a trilogy. And most struggle with writing an excellent sequel. Sometimes the sequel doesn’t live up to the first book, but it’s still good. And sometimes the sequel is just as good as the first book, if not better. In this case, Prince of Secrets and Shadows exceeds its predecessor, Kingdom of Ash and Soot.
“You are young yet, but even you know there are things worth dying for.”
I knew this book was going to be phenomenal when I started the first chapter. I adore books that start almost right where the previous book left off. It’s a wonderful way to refresh your memory and get a feel for the impact the first book left on the main characters. And just like the first book, C.S. Johnson starts the story off with an important scene, one that involves one of my all-time favorite characters. Johnson sets the boundaries straight in the first chapter and gets the reader ready for what to expect throughout the novel. It’s exciting and a great way to start a sequel.
And then enter the one known as the Prince of Secrets and Shadows. He was a very interesting character and added a lot of grief to the story, in the sense that he did not make it easy for the characters. He’s a double-edged sword and, frankly, not someone I would want to mess with. It’s not that he’s necessarily a dangerous character, but he plays a dangerous game of cat and mouse. And his role in this story thickened the plot in a way I did not see coming.
“I used to think being free meant an escape; I thought it meant I would be able to move away from authority and addiction, to be still against the forces of time and space. But as he held me there, pushed against a wall, I knew freedom was not an escape, but a coming home.”
In Prince of Secrets and Shadows, Ella struggles with deciding what she wants to do with her life. She’s in the Order because she wants to follow in her Mother’s footsteps. But her heart desires something different, something more than the life Ella has chosen. Ella wants freedom and love and not to be controlled like she has been most her life. And throughout this book, she starts to realize that freedom and love can decidedly be the same thing.
“Even if you deny your heart, your heart does not go away. That is why everyone lies, everyone has secrets, and everyone has regrets.”
Ella struggles with many of her relationships, in more ways than one. Her brother distances himself from her, causing an unforeseen rift in their relationship. She connects with one of her trainers in a way she didn’t expect. And her relationship with Lady POW grows stronger in a surprising way.
And then there is Ferdy. Oh, Ferdy. There isn’t a part of me that doesn’t love this character. He’s charming, considerate, and just an all-around great character and love interest for Ella. And though Ella battles with her heart and what she perceives as right, he never once gives up on her. Most of my favorite chapters consisted of Ferdy and the tension between him and Ella.
In the first book, Ella is a strong and courageous character. I’m not saying she isn’t in the second book (she’s quite brave and strong-headed), but she now realizes she has way more at stake than just her freedom. And to protect those she loves, she may have to knowingly play that game of cat and mouse.
If you haven’t ready Kingdom of Ash and Soot, I highly recommend. C.S. Johnson has beautifully woven a story that you will not soon forget. Kingdom of Ash and Soot is available now and Prince of Secrets and Shadows comes out next Tuesday, December 4!
Thank you to the author for sending an advanced e-copy for me to read and write an honest review! All quotes are from the advanced e-copy and may not appear in the final novel.
Eleanora (Ella/Nora) Svobodová is back. She survived the blast at Prague Castle but there is more danger lurking and some of it is closer than she could have imagined.
Prince of Secrets and Shadows picked up where Kingdom of Ash and Soot left off. The danger is still present but there are more players in the deadly game than any of them realised. Characters both new and old supplied more mystery, intrigue and plot twists which led to the closing chapters being a gasp-worthy cliff-hanger.
Eleanora is the same strong young woman we met in Kingdom of Ash and Soot though this time around there is more trust issues. Her brother Ben becomes more distant, angry and secretive. Lady POW is just as harsh and secretive as she was in book one. Harshad plays a greater roll in this book and makes a considerable impact. Amir is still an interesting character but also more confusing. Then there is Ferdy; Who really knows what is going on in that young man's head.
As with the first book I enjoyed the writing style. There was a recapping element at the start which is useful if you have not read the first book recently. That made the pace at the beginning a little slow, though it most certainly picked up as the story went along. Book one focused on freedom and that theme is continued, but I liked that book two focused more on trust. It was interesting to read how strongly one can feel about someone who they have little to no trust in as well as how that trust is earned and lost.
This is an awesome sequel to the first book. The questions I had at the end of the first book were answered in this book. I won't say any more so I won't give anything away. You definitely need to read this book if you liked the first one. Can't wait for the next book from this author. Anyone who has read her books love them. Do yourself the favor if you love fantasy....buy her books!
Merged review:
Anyone who reads this author’s books will not be disappointed and she has done it again with this series!! This historical novel is book 2 in the series but it’s equally exciting as the first. The characters are all complex and interesting. Ella is still training as a member of the Order of the Crystal Daggers and trying to prevent the Kingdom’s enemies from taking over. She finds out who is lying and it’s not good. If you want to go for an adventure, buy this series! In fact, buy every book this author has written. You will not be sorry!!!
I’d honestly give this about 4.5 stars. The first book in the series was better, in my opinion. But this was still very good. Most of the time I was reading just to get to the Ella-Ferdy scenes...everything else just felt like a backdrop for those precious moments. And precious, they were. I LOVE Ella and Ferdy’s chemistry and romance!!! 🥰 There were quite a few typos in this one, which I hate to say kinda wrench me out of the story-world. And there were a few places where I got confused at the way things were worded. But overall, I love C.S. Johnson’s writing style, storytelling, and especially her romance.
I received this novel as an Arc. What can I say...if you enjoyed the first book, this one continues just where it left off. I couldn't wait to see what would happen between Eleanora and Ferdy and the other characters and was happily engrossed with the story. It kept me intrigued and wanting more and I couldn't put it down (unfortunately I had to, but any free time I was back reading it). The story line evolves around secrets, love, lies and choices. All the main old characters are back and we are introduced to a few new ones. As the story continues so does the development and relationships of the characters. Even learning more about the characters from their past experiences and understand why they act like they do. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and can't wait for the last book in this series and to see what adventure I am taken on. Thank you C.S. Johnson for the journey so far.
I was given and ARC of this book and this is my honest review. Ferdy and Eleanora are back in this fast paced sequel. I have been waiting for this book and was not disappointed. Favorite characters are back and new ones are introduced, one of which became another favorite of mine. This story is full of intrigue and mysteries along with heartache and a quick moving story. If you liked the first book in this trilogy you will enjoy this just as much. I loved that it takes place in Prague, as I have been lucky enough to visit that beautiful city and could not imagine a better setting for such a rich story. Now for the long wait for the final chapter to see what happens to Ella, Ferdy, Ben, Lady POW and Karl.
This was a page turner for me, I speed through this book in a few days. In a different life, it probably would have been a "stay up till 3am to finish" sort of book for me. All the same charming characters from the first book are here. Though one of the villains got less charming as his true colors started to show. Ah well. I will say it was a little difficult for me to remember all the political affiliations and motives of all the different characters, but that is part of the intrigue. I can't wait for the third book, I hope it comes out soon!
Oh my...yet another amazing novel with the second in this series. There is mystery upon mystery with secrets revealed amidst growing conflict and chaos. Ella’s character becomes more defined as she struggles to decide where her allegiance to truth will lead. She longs for connection to family, friends and loved ones all the while striving to fulfill her duty to her country. There are philosophical debates, betrayals and fisticuffs galore. I highly recommend this thoughtful, entertaining novel although be sure to read the first book in the series before this one for all the glorious back story. I am pleased to share my honest opinion after receiving this ARC.
The first book was amazing and the second book even more so! There are so many players on C.S. Johnson's figurative chess board, with a few duplicitous characters, that it's hard to keep all the details straight, but that just keeps it exciting. The intrigue, danger, and romance just keep coming. Who will turn on whom?
Ella is still new at being a spy and this is evident in her actions and reactions. She has to learn to recognize her weaknesses, including her care for her brother. Even with all the espionage, her zeal for the truth and for freedom perseveres. But defining truth and freedom is the real clincher. To complicate things, she's in love with the foolhardy younger brother while pretending to be in love with the focused and driven heir. The ending is moving and will leave you hanging. I can't wait for Book 3!
I received an ARC of this book. This is my honest and voluntary review.
I loved reading this story very much. It has very strong chracters and a wonderful story line, I am so glad I read this story. I highly recommend this wonderful story to all. This is my honest and unbias opinion of the story.
What a fantastic follow up for Kingdom! This was a roller coaster ride from start to finish! The tears and the laughter! It had it all! I know I can warn about spoilers but I don't want to spoiler it for anyone. But the twists were so well done! Can't wait for the next installment.
The story had my attention from the beginning. It picked up right where the first book finished. Lots of guessing as to who should be trusted and believed. Looking forward to the next book.
Amazing book, kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time! Read well into the night until my device wacked me in the head😂 A good mix of action, suspense, drama, romance and history😄
C.S. Johnson is a writing genius! I have yet to read a book by her that I didn’t absolutely love. Prince of Secrets and Shadows is book two in The Order of the Crystal Daggars series, and it has just escalated from awesome to amazing.
The world building is everything I want in a book like this. Even though it’s the second book, it is still on point and that’s one of the many things I love about C.S. Johnson’s writing.
The characters are so good. The villains are complex, the romance is sincere and healthy. It’s everything you hope for as a reader when you’re imeresed into a novel. You hope to feel as if you know the characters and are part of the world.
I highly recommend picking this series up. I don’t think you will be disappointed!
*I read this book as part of a blog tour with R&R Book Tours. All opinions are my own.*
Book two of The Order of the Crystal Daggers and the author does not disappoint. She brings a cast of strong characters ,adds in secrets and lies and takes them on another intriguing adventure. It's well written.moves fluidly and I enjoyed reading.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
So this book continues where Kingdom of Ash and Soot finished. There was an explosion in the castle and Ella and Ferdy were caught in it. Both Ferdy and Ella’s secrets have been revealed to each other and to keep Ferdy save she leaves him, no matter how much it hurts her. She returns home and continues her training and is back out in soCiety as well as getting close to Karl. New people arrive in the city and more secrets are revealed. Ella is still trying to learn more about her mother and she has to follow her hurt to do what’s right and save the people she loves. This book is just as good as the first book and the storyline just keeps getting stronger. This is definitely a series worth reading and looking forward to reading what happens next.
Another amazing book by this fabulous author. Have ready many of her books and this one is no exception. A touch of romance, and a little mystery to add to a magnificent fantasy story. Don’t miss out once it’s released.
This YA historical thriller is set in the midst of an international underworld of spies and diplomats that our young heroine had no inkling of before volume 1. However, readers will have no problem stringing it all together even without familiarity because previous incidents are well explained.
There are two princes for Ella to handle, one who has chosen to listen to the people and one who has not; both are eager for her hand but for completely different reasons. She chose to follow her mother and grandmother into this world of intrigue following high ideals, but doubts that she's temperamentally suited to function in the constraints of the Order. Ella's personal choices have repercussions upon the the city of Prague and the entire known world, but in the end the highest of ideals require her to follow her own heart.
Nevertheless there is plenty of action and rescuing for her and her allies before her ultimate choice. What is most wonderful is that however eccentric the characters, they are completely plausible and comprehensible, even the villains! And despite the happily ever after at the end, you know those villains will be brewing more mayhem in future installments. But I didn't have to suffer any 'cliff-hanger' unlike volume 1. Well done CS Johnson!
