In the wake of Brian Guthrie's Dragon Award nominated novel Rise, comes Fall ...
War has broken out between the shells, fragments of a shattered world that humanity clings to for survival. To stave off the conflict, the survivors of a brutal attack seek aid from the one source no one else believes can the dragons. But the creatures are fractured into two factions and caught up in a fight of their own, a conflict that may be connected to the war above.
As the survivors seek answers and help, they stumble onto a secret, long lost, that once nearly destroyed the world. A secret that has the power to save humanity. Or end it.
Brian Guthrie, 2017 Dragon Award nominee Best Scifi novel, is an independent author of science fiction, fantasy, and more. His first novel, Rise (book one of a series of four, available now) won the Inkshares Nerdist Contest and a Break the Bechdel Syndicate pick and his second planned novel, After Man (co-authored with Michelle Guthrie; release TBD) won the Inkshares Geek and Sundry Contest, making him the first author on Inkshares to win two contests. Rise’s sequel, Fall, is available now, and he has plans for a joint project science fiction/historical fiction piece, some historical fiction, and much more. He is married to Michelle Guthrie, a father of a teen who defies gender roles, and has a menagerie of pets.
After a jarring start, where I felt a little discombobulated (should have reread Rise - that’s on me), things picked up quickly with the story of Michaela and co.
Fall ties up many of the open threads left from book one, Rise, in a satisfying - dare I say gratifying - way.
I don’t want to spoil things - this is a sequel after all - and I won’t beyond saying certain characters, and theories, came into light more than Rise.
I’d say reading them back-to-back is the way to go. And now that they are finally both out in the world, you totally should.
In "Fall," the second installment of the Future Worlds series, the author plunges readers into a post-apocalyptic landscape where humanity clings to survival amidst the ruins of a shattered world. The narrative opens with the harrowing backdrop of war, as factions of survivors grapple with the aftermath of a brutal attack. The world-building is both vivid and immersive, painting a picture of a society on the brink of collapse, where hope is a scarce commodity.
The author skillfully establishes a sense of urgency and desperation, drawing readers into the lives of characters who must navigate the treacherous terrain of both their environment and their own fractured relationships. At the heart of the story lies the quest for aid from an unexpected source: dragons. This intriguing premise sets the stage for a complex exploration of alliances and enmities, as the survivors seek to bridge the gap between their world and that of the dragons.
As the survivors delve deeper into their quest, they uncover a long-lost secret that holds the potential to either save humanity or lead to its ultimate destruction. This revelation serves as a pivotal turning point in the story, propelling the characters into a race against time. The author masterfully weaves together elements of mystery and suspense, keeping readers on the edge of their seats as they unravel the implications of this secret.
The relationships between characters are nuanced and realistic, showcasing the complexities of human emotions in times of crisis. As alliances shift and betrayals unfold, readers become emotionally invested in the characters' journeys, rooting for their success while fearing the potential for loss.
The writing style is both engaging and accessible, with a balance of action and introspection that keeps the narrative flowing smoothly. The pacing is well-executed, allowing for moments of tension to build while also providing necessary pauses for character reflection. The author’s descriptive prose brings the world to life.
In conclusion, this book is a gripping continuation of the Future Worlds series that explores themes of survival, trust, and the complexities of conflict. I highly recommend it to everyone.
Exciting!! I have so many questions about what’s next in the story!! Who broke the world? Who is/was Micaela? Is there some kind of time travel involved, or weird regeneration?? Why are there dragons and where did they come from? Looking forward to the next installment to hopefully answer these!
