Gay romance is forbidden in this 1930s gothic romantic suspense story, but a greater darkness than prejudice haunts our lovers’ steps.
When Carter Thomas discovers the elaborate clockwork door in the Dupre Mine, he seeks out Etienne Dupre, the sheltered son of the mine’s owner, for answers. Both young men have long secretly loved one another from afar. But even as their summertime love affair flames hot and forbidden, they discover secrets about Etienne’s heritage and the dark plan Armand Dupre has in store for his son. If the door is opened then Etienne - and perhaps the world - will all be sacrificed to Armand’s lust for power. Can Carter and Etienne stop Armand or has their fate already been written in stone?
What a goddamned disappointment. On several occasions, I was ready to DNF it. *SPOILERS AHEAD*
The start of the book seemed promising, but the more I read, the more awkward the writing. While there were bits of nice prose, the majority of it was bland, and/or off. It's hard for me to explain. When I read the synopsis, I was expecting more of a paranormal action thriller/mm romance. The story was a paranormal, and it did feature two male protagonists - and that was pretty much it. The story mainly consisted of the two guys fawning over each other, with Etienne - the very pretty, sickly effeminate one, of which there was no description - basically coming across as a helpless female. Really? Hell, there was one scene that goes on for pages with the other guy - Carter - sucking on the pretty one's dick. Other drawn out scenes about the menacing fog, I skipped over as well. Needless to say, I skipped several pages throughout the book. 'The Fall' got a bit more interesting as it came towards the end with the whole rabid zombie-like thing going on, but at that point, I was rushing to the end. 1.5 stars.
I liked the premise of the story, it just felt rushed. The writing didn’t flow as much as newer books the author now puts out. I still liked the story though.
Honestly I am more interested in what the next book has in store, but that doesn’t seem to exist so I guess this is just an open ended story :/
I'm a sucker for freinds to lovers romances, and the way Aratare writes the sappy sweet mush works for me. Even with the horror in here I didn't like, I still liked the couple and their romance. Aww.
So many ways this can go...but I am happy that Carter and Etienne are together and long gone from the hell that overcame their lives. I love the mystery and the described horrors of the evil hidden within the door. I was easily able to imagine it all and made the experience believable
This story was a horror classic reminiscent of Edgar Allen Poe or Stephen King. Combine that with a gay romance with 2 very likable male characters. I thoroughly enjoyed the story from beginning to end.
