A COMPANION VOLUME TO THE EXODUS SERIES After nearly a century of oppression, the human race can finally explore the stars. Now part of a newly-formed alien alliance, the military commemorates this new age by building their first generation of starships to explore the unknown. When the crew of the INFINITY embarks on the starship’s maiden voyage, they’re primed for a mission of exploration and discovery—not confrontation. But when an unimaginable threat derails their plans, they’re forced to rethink everything they believe to be true . . . and question where their loyalties lie. With time running out, they must make a life-and-death surrender to their basest instincts, or face an even greater danger that threatens them from within.
Robert Stadnik is a science fiction writer, author of the Exodus science fiction starship adventure series and Exodus Universe companion novels.
Originally from Southern California, Robert has lived in Phoenix, Arizona for over twenty years. He's traveled extensively around the country, meeting people from all walks of life.
Infinite Retribution by Robert Stadnik This is part of Stadnik’s Exodus Universe. I read Exodos of the Phoenix which may have been the first book and this is the current book. There was a lot of story in between. This book takes up much later in the saga. I do not recommend reading this book before you read the others as there was too much missing. This story is focused on treachery, insubordination, and prejudice. The story is okay as a stand-alone but I felt like I was missing far too much. Perhaps a preface to bring you up to speed would have helped. It is a good story and I enjoyed it but I would have enjoyed it more reading the preceding volumes.
3.5 stars It took me a long time to get invested in the story and the characters, and that made me almost walk away from this. But I'm so glad that I didn't.
The Prologue is useful, but you don't understand the importance of it until much, much later in the novel.
I found myself really liking Annette, despite the fact that we're not really supposed to. Despite the rumors that turned out to be true, she's a flawed but very intriguing and likable character.
Jacob seems to be a very minor character, but he becomes more important later on.
Throughout the story, I have been conflicted about Frank. He's likable and interesting, but I also don't like some of the decisions he made later on in the book.
The alien characters were very interesting; I wish that they were a larger part of the novel.
The ending was very conflicting. On one hand, I thought that what happened was the best of two bad options, but on the other, it would have been nice to have captured the enemy race instead of wiping them out.
Overall, I liked it. If you like stories set in space in the future with moral dilemmas, this book is for you.
Infinite Retribution is a spinoff of the Exodus series. Although it is a standalone it does have some spoilers for the original Exodus series and I would recommend reading all books in the original series first.
Humans have defeated the Screen and while the Phoenix continues to explore deep space a new fleet of space crafts are now ready to venture farther than the inner solar system. After Terra launches it's first outer solar system mission they encounter an unexpected danger that could put all of humanity's lives at risk.
Stadnik continues with his interesting writing style of multiple POV and political intrigue. His books read like a season of a TV show. I generally don't do really heavy sci-fi books, but I really enjoyed this series.
