A few days before Christmas, a young woman was found wandering the streets of Upper Manhattan wearing only a New York Giants jersey. The young woman was sent to the local hospital, where she died. The doctors ruled the death a homicide.
Detective Iris Williams and her partner Detective Annette Toni are assigned to the case. Soon after, the body of a young man is found murdered in the most macabre way, then another, and another....
Detectives Williams and Toni soon realize that the murders are like nothing they’ve ever seen before. The detectives must hunt down a killer who leaves his victims on public display. A suspect whose murders are…Medieval.
This series is so pleasantly dark that I just do love reading it. With each book the characters are becoming more and more developed. It is a book to devour but not late at night.

I signed up to review this book without carefully reading the description. I had wrongly thought it was historic fiction. It is not. It is a contemporary crime serial murder mystery. So, I am far outside my preferred genres of historic fiction and historic romance.
Detective Iris Williams and her partner Detective Annette Toni are assigned to investigate a gruesome murder done by medieval means. They are friends, lovers and super cops. The story is engaging and easy to follow. There are lighter human moments and bloody descriptions.
The first 15 chapters have tons of plot, character development and fun quirky bits. The middle drags a bit. But the last ten chapters have surprising twists and turns. The book is a whole story and resolves the criminal plot, but does leave you wanting to read more about the main characters.
Narrator is good and can do children and a variety if voices.

This book is the fifth in the series and I do recommend that they are read in order as this will aid both in terms of character development and help prevent spoilers for plot arcs.
The book deals with detectives toni and iris who are partners in both work and life and their daughter Jasmine.
I won't reveal the subplot as I don't want to give away surprises but the main story deals with two serial killers who are obsessed with the medieval era and the methods of torture developed there. As with previous books the murders and murder scenes are graphic so this is not for the faint hearted.
I enjoyed the book although felt that the start was a little slow however the ending more than made up for this and I loved the twist at the end. I'm looking forward to the next installment by the author
I love this series of books about Toni and Iris, two American detectives and I have read a lot of them now and looking forward to the next. Just when you think nothing more can happen, it does. The one thing I did find annoying is that it really did need to be proofread better, a lot of sentences need to be reread as they don’t read right then in the second part of the book it said that they had changed their car from a Durango to a Jeep, further along they had the Durango back then near the ending they had the Jeep again. Overall, a really good book and would recommend.
I am totally infatuated with this series despite h the ‘no way this would happen in real life’ plots in the books. This story continues with plenty of action, great characters, and mysteries that have you guessing until the end. The only thing that prevents me from giving this five stars is the amount of grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors.
I received an arc of this book and voluntarily provided a review.
