The quakes have leveled cities. Soon the continents themselves will break apart. The ships are gone. There's no way off. But I'm not giving up. I'm a Relic Hunter...an archaeologist with a gun, and I have a plan.
Our people arrived on Kemet thousands of years ago in the wake of a terrible space battle. The Great Ships are still up there, ancient derelict hulks powered by a combination of technology and magic, created by gods we no longer remember or understand.
If I can get one of those ships active, maybe I can save myself. Maybe I can save everyone.
A brand new series in the Amazon Bestselling Magitech Chronicles universe. Magitech Legacy begins several months after the events of Godswar, and as the series unfolds you’ll encounter your favorite heroes from the perspective of a new protagonist!
Want to make your own characters? The Magitech Legacy uses the Magitech Chronicles RPG system, and allows you to be part of the action long after you finish the books.
By day I am an iPhone developer architecting the app used to scope Stephen Colbert’s ear. By night I am Batman. Ok maybe not. One can dream though, right?
I’ve been writing since I was six years old and started inflicting my work on others at age 18. By age 24 people stopped running away when I approached them with a new story and shortly thereafter I published my first one in the Rifter.
Wait you’re still reading?
Ok, the facts I’m supposed to list in a bio. As of this writing I’m 38 years old and live just north of the Golden Gate Bridge in the beautiful town of Mill Valley. If you’re unsure how to find it just follow the smell of self-entitlement. Once you see the teens driving Teslas you’ll know you’re in the right place.
I live in a tiny studio that I can cross in (literally) five steps and don’t own an oven. But you know what? It’s worth it. I love developing iPhone apps and if you want to work in San Francisco you accept that rent for a tiny place costs more than most people’s mortgage.
If you and about 2 million other people start buying my books I promise to move out of Marin to a house in the redwoods up in Guerneville. No pressure. Wait that’s a lie. Pressure.
“There was no experiencer, only the experience. I became everything, and everything became me. One seamless whole.” I am totally wowed with the world building, the storyline, the Magitech, the fusion of science with magic..it’s a unique and fabulous universe! The short prequel Planetfall is a must read before starting this series. The intensity and vividness is so acute, you can practically taste the intensity and drive that motivates the protagonist. An explosive, action-packed story that sometimes moves at the speed of light. I haven’t yet read the Magitech Chronicles series-my huge mistake-but I’ll do so now, because it’s an important background to this new fantastic series. Its incredibly complex, flawed characters separate this work of sci-fi from all others I've read. I Highly recommend it!
An unexceptionally dull array of characters tackle problems that have little to do with them. DNF @ 60%.
Amorphous characterisation. The characters here are some of the most odd I've ever encountered. They don't have an plot relevant flaws and react almost without emotion to challenging situations. Here are a couple examples: • A nerd who is described as being well below average physically (a typical wimpy apprentice mage), is only a day later taking down mercenaries, he was once scared of, and assuming leadership of a group of battle-hardened veterans. • A sister finds out she is adopted and instead of defaulting to protecting the only father figure she has known, sides with her questionable brother. Without even batting an eye-lid.
Disconnected plot. The villans and the heroes have nothing in common with one another. In fact, in some ways, the destruction of the planet helped the protagonist break free of his financial shackles and reunited his broken family. So the only reason the heroes have to save the planet is a misplaced sense of uncharacteristic altruism.
How do you top a series of 7 books spanning across a galaxy, multiple planets (several of which got blown or torn apart), Dragons, Mages, More Magic than you can fling a Fireball at, Demi-Gods and Gods, and Mortal Beings being elevated up to the status of Gods!! Not to mention some of the most outstanding Tech you will ever read in a Sci-Fi novel AND, even better, combing the two so you have spell casting rifles and pistols. How do you beat that?? Well quite simply you can’t, Magitech Chronicles was one of the most Epic series in the genre to date. Although this book takes place not long after the events of those in the final book of the Magitech Chronicles Series, ‘Godswar’, I am willing to go out on a limb and say you could get away without having read the Magitech Chronicles and starting this fresh. Whilst you will miss out on some references, or bits along the way, it is not enough that you will feel that you can’t get enough out of the story to enjoy it. (Of course, it is totally worth going and reading the other 7 books first as they are just so damn good!). I am also not sure of how much you will miss in future books, but in book 1, you can get away with it! This book follows young Jerek, who is kind of like Indiana Jones, if Indiana Jones looked like Sheldon from Big Bang. Jerek is very smart, very clever at his job, a great archeologist, and is very good at a lot of different things, but strength and athletics are not 2 of these. Having only just graduated from the Academy, and looking for work, Jerek leaps at the opportunity to become a ‘Relic Hunter’. A Relic Hunter is a crazy person who is part of a small crack team that break into the hulks of wrecks in space to find anything valuable. Their employers get the lions share, but they get to keep a percentage. Whilst it seems like easy money, there are risks in the deep of space, crews are not alone, there are things out there that don’t like ‘Relic Hunters’, such as Lurkers, or booby traps on the wrecks, ancient A.I. that don’t like being tampered with, or competition that wants what is in the hulk more than you do. Jerek’s Dad, Dag, who was once famous as an Arena champion, but is now only famous for screwing up on a mission, and losing his legs and getting most of his team killed, is dead against Jerek going. But he goes anyway as he needs the money. It is on this mission that things happen to Jerek that change the course of his life. First off, he finds a suit of Armour, ancient armour, long forgotten armour, and when he puts it on, he is immediately in contact with something. He also learns that his team is being shredded, all dying, and he has to escape. As he escapes, he sees a comet coming towards the planet, and notices that it is under the influence of Magic, and it is on a collision course for Kemet. And this is where things get really interesting for Jerek. Suddenly, he works out that he is on a ‘Dying World’ (Hey, funny that, given the title and all…), but he also finds out that the armour is linked to the ship that he got it from, and that this is part of something much bigger than he originally thought. He, his Dad, his friend Briff (a Dragon Hatchling), as well as some others (I’ll let you read about them so as to not give away spoilers), are now in a brutal struggle that is life and death, to not only make it off the planet, but find out the truth about what is happening. Fox has created yet another exceptional series, using the amazing Universe he created in the Magitech Series. This allows for this unique blend of Magic and Technology that was so brilliant in the original series to again be utilised in this series, but it can be expanded upon, with such cool things as the Heka Aten Armour, as well as all the Magic we know. The great thing about Fox’s writing is his Characters though, as he creates such in-depth and well-rounded characters and uses them to tell the story, allowing them to develop nicely. This has always been one of his strengths, and it has only improved with each series, from the Void Wraith Series through to now, his character writing continues to be the highlight of the books. Dying World is the first in what is going to be an outstanding series, now is the time to get onboard!!
The remnants of humanity reside on the planet Kemet.
The Kemet system's nearest neighbors were the giant relics of the Vagrant Fleet. Ancient vessels a hundred millennia old, some still containing ancient magitech - weapons and devices powered by one or more of the eight forms of magic. Shrek, an archaeology student with a passion for magic theory at the Kemet Academy, is on the derelict ship Word of Xal looking for old magitech, anything worth salvaging. Jerek finds an armory and when he manages to open the spell-locked door, finds several suits of armor and weaponry. Salvage laws allow the looter to keep any tech he can carry and use. Jerek done the armor and pockets a spells gun before he informs the crew that he has opened the armory. Meantime, their ship, the Remote, and the rest of the crew are attacked by Lurkers, homicidal pirates who will kill anyone they find and steal their finds. Jerek discovers some of his new armor's abilities, using them to get himself off the Word of Xal relatively unhurt.
As Jerek discovers more of his magitech armor's abilities, the suit informs him that a comet has destabilized the planet's orbit and will drive it into the sun, tearing it apart. When he attempts to inform the Minister of what he's learned, she (who happens to be Jerek's mother's girlfriend) is already aware of the fact, but is helpless to do anything about it. She leaves it on Jerek's shoulders.
Magic and science mix in this sci-fi space opera as the protagonists battle against Gods and Goddesses and their minions. Hundreds of thousands of years old, the weaponry and technology use magic and some are sentient. The storyline is amazing and filled with unexpected twists you can't see coming. The characters grow before your eyes and become a fit fighting force against the Inuran Consortium antagonists intent on seizing the Vagrant Fleet for their own purposes. I'm looking forward to the continuation of this storyline. This is a great read!
You can't get more real than an archaeologist turned salvager that admits he is badly out of shape then proceeded to show it ...but he has got heart and magic, which he uses to compensate. But there's more to come on him...These new characters are great and then some old favorites start to show up, some you love to hate and others you want to succeed. I love the out of shape Dragon "college" boy hooked on video games and lazy, until he gets a chance to learn what he can be and how much potential he has after he has to step up to save his best friend. There is a very dysfunctional family situation that somehow starts to come together and of course, evil that needs thwarting! I do believe our team is up to the challenge. It's funny at times, a little gritty and lots of action. You will laugh at the last sentence, especially if, like me, you read through the whole book without stopping...
I thought this a good continuation of the Magitech chronicles. It’s definitely not as “cool”... No, that’s wrong. It’s more like the characters aren’t as “cool” in a badass type way. Instead they’re chubby loser gamer geeks and alcoholics and pawn shoppers! But hey, that’s what had me give it 5 stars! Definitely relatable!!!! I mean, I’m going to start working out again, soon. If I got a magitechal suit of armor though, I bet I could kick some ass too! It’s definitely a Chris Fox book where you keep reading and staying entertained *sparkles* If you’re a fan of Chis, it’s a good book with relatable characters and great flow. The first few chapters make take a little bit to get going but stay with it and get past em and you’ll be rewarded! If you aren’t a fan and read this first? Go back and read the originals and all the rest! What have you been doing with your life!?!
Another enjoyable audio book from Chris Fox. I spent most my time listening to this whilst painting the garden deck or walking, and it was a nice escape from the monotony of those tasks.
Jerrek is the MC and it is told from a 1st person pov, which I liked. The world is dying and he is just trying to survive. This is a great set up. The opening and first act were really good.
The second half stuttered a little bit for me as his actions didnt tie enough to the idea of saving his world. He spent the second half playing space marine, whilst millions died. I get why (to build lore) but it took up too much time. The end result was that there wasn't really a climax, he just saved everyone.
Good worldbuilding, and it followed on from Magitech well, without it being mandatory.
It's been a while since I read the (first three) books in the Magitech Cronicles and it took a while before the memories started to come back. I don't think it's necessary to read them first, but it was nice to be prepared with terms like "spell drive", "whyrm".
Much like the other books, this one makes me feel like I'm in the middle of a D&D game. Despite the SciFi setting, reading the book is like being transferred back to the gameplaying in my teens. A huge improvement from the Magitech series is the main character who is very far from being a badass, but fights keeps on because it has to be done. His thought process really makes the book.
There's a lot of humor in the book and I recommend it to all fellow nerds out there!
EVERYTHING. Every. Damn. Thing. OMG. Ever been bullied? I have. If you have then this book IS FOR YOU. I’m so tied up in knots about this story that I cannot wait to read the rest of the series.
What I didn’t like. . .
It could have been 10,000 pages longer - or more, I’m not greedy (much). In other words, I didn’t want it to end it was that good.
I don’t like the fact that the series has only just begun. I loathe not being able to digest book after book in a series when it’s this good.
Nope. That’s all I can think of.
Totally, thoroughly enjoyed the read. Thank you Mr. Fox.
An excellent sequel to the Magitech novels. There are still Wyrms and Demons but the main characters are human - or humanoid - albeit magic wielders and the tale proceeds with a great blend of humour and seriousness. A world on the brink of destruction, a fleet of derelict ships (or so they want it thought) and a typical geek type gaming character for the hero all combine to weave a tale that holds the attention from first to last and encourages the reader to progress to the next book in the series. I highly recommend it.
A rather bizarre mix of Sci Fy and D&D. Gods, Undead, Dragons and Magic combined with space ships, virtual reality computer games and high-tech.
The MC, Jarrek starts as a weak nerd but rather unbelievably turns into a Space Trooper, Space Ship captain and the Saviour of the people in the matter of days... The characters were really too far fetched or artificial for me. Same for the modus operandi of the Trade Conglomerate...
Apparently you can become a god by cannibalism ;-).
I finished the first 4 books to give the story a chance but it is just not for me.
This was a great foray into a new and broader Magitech universe. After following along with the characters in the Magitech Chronicles series, it was fun to spend time with some new characters and building new mythology (albeit with great callbacks and references to the original saga that started it all). Overall, I'm really excited to see where the Magitech Legacy books go and how they add to the worldbuilding of this great setting.
It’s an odd storyline filled with sci-fi, magic and some confusing emotional entanglements. There apparently is a previous series which started some of the character threads in this series. It might help the reader understand this book better, but there was enough background most of the time in this book. Decent character development and a positive ending.
I have enjoyed all of the Magitech stories, but this one seemed to flow the smoothest of all. Being in the first person made it much easier to simply immerse myself in the narrative and embrace the story. It was nice having a couple familiar characters show up for cameos. Thanks for another amazing adventure, Mr. Fox.
This new series has the writing and the stories we love from the Magitech and now on a far off world we start anew. Great tie ins to this from that series and a whole new set of interesting characters to follow. A easy 5 stars as im loving the start and the middle and even the end of this first book.
Not as interesting as the first series, seems to be trying to show parts of the setting and lore that we didn't get with the first series, namely non-military people, and even some without magic. This changes rapidly and by the end, it's pretty much tossed all of that aside. It's, good enough, but I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as the previous books.
This is a great mix of scifi and fantasy. I give a lot of credit to Chris for the intertwining of the plot. I can't wait for the next book. Keep them coming.
I didn't realise how much i missed this series until i finnished reading this new book in the Magitech universe! A new cast of charachters to follow on thier adventures and no doubt Gods will be involved! Cracking good stuff!
Truly enjoyed this book. Was a little slow building up but that was due to the author building a strong cast of diverse characters. Love the tie in with his previous solid series. Eagerly awaiting the next book release
Couldn't put this book down. Loved so many things about this book. Chris really has you rooting for the underdog of a main character here, you won't want to wait to find out how it all ends!
Youth with untested talent overcomes resistance and triumphs
The action moved fast. I got to know the characters as the story developed. The believable characters successfully use weapons and resources of unbelievable power.
The premise was great - magic, raiding remnants of old lost technology, what's not to like? It turned out far too YA for my taste. The wimpy main character suddenly becomes very powerful and has to save the world. The characters felt flat and immature. I dropped it very fast.
Wonderful book. I had trouble putting it down. If you are looking at reviews in order to determine if you should read it, then yes, you should get it and read it. I hated the ending enough that I will not continue the series, but that is just a personal preference in what I like in books I read.
