Akane is your typical teenage girl...until she swallows a Dragon Jewel, which transports her to the Heian period of ancient Japan! There in the city of Kyou, Akane learns that she has been foreordained to lead the people as the Priestess of the Dragon God! But all is not well. Akram, the head of the Oni Clan, has sworn death and destruction on Kyou. So Akane appoints eight young men, the Hachiyo, to stand by her side as she faces the danger that awaits...
Incoherent. Incoherent story, incoherent plot, incoherent writing. Oh, it's all cliche too. How am I supposed to enjoy this when nothing is understandable? The dialogue is really random and the 'dragon power' nonsense is weird and never explained. Characters randomly appear and are never properly introduced. I don't even know anyone's name except to Akane. And no one in this book shows proper disbelief or concern over the fact that THEY'VE TRAVELED THROUGH TIME. Not Akane, and not her 'friends'. (It's never actually established who these people are...)
And Akane is one of the biggest Mary Sues on the face of the planet. 1. She is transported back in time because she is a 'chosen one'. 2. She gets magical powers and awesomeness for no reason. 3. Everyone loves her and fawns over her despite the fact that these characters just met her. 4. She falls in love with the villain she just met...because he looks pretty. And she is eager to excuse his terrible actions. 5. She never does anything active to further the plot. 6. She is always being saved by those around her.
The art is pretty, but pretty things can not save this messy manga.
I have a really strong interest in Japanese history and in the culture of ancient Japan, so this was a huge disappointment. Go read a history textbook. At least that will make sense.
Disjointed is putting it mildly. Seriously, nothing meshes, people show up and leave randomly it's impossible to follow whats going on because theirs no real underlying story.
It got one star because I liked the interlude of how Tomomasa-Taiza met Fuji-hime.
I don't know who ripped off who but Fushugi Yugi was SO MUCH better then this. Throwing a girl back in time has been done a lot in manga (Hi Red River- which is also way better then this) but the plot is convoluted at best and just boring at worst. And how is the main character in love with the main bad guy after meeting him for all of 5 minutes?! Meanwhile her friends who happened to come through time with her, at least one of them is in love with her and I can't figure out why. And the book is the opposite of linear with all the bouncing around it does. She finds 4 of 8 guardians by the end of the book and I just didn't care. Do you know how boring a book has to be for me to hope for a body count? And not only do I not like the plain jane heroine, I also dislike most of her supposed guardians because so far they are one dimensional and dull. Just skip this and read Fushugi Yugi; at least that has humor and angst and PLOT right off the bat.

I bought this manga in German because it hasn't been published in English yet.
This book is the manga version of the anime Haru Kanaru Toki no Naka De... and it's as beautifully drawn as the anime itself. It's a very shojo manga, so there is a lot of lot of love stuff there but what I liked a lot was that not everybody was immediately head-over-heals for the main heroine (which is quite common in manga/anime based on dating games).
Why did I give it one star less than? Because my favorite character - Takamichi - wasn't there almost at all. But we got a lot of General Tomomasa who rules too!
I absolutely adore reverse harem series (maybe because I secretly just want to be the center of attention). The character personalities varied for the boys which I liked and their stories were really entertaining.
Oh, no.... It feels like a poor rendition of Fushigi Yuugi. The artwork, characters and dialogue are not as good, though. At times, the writing is rather incoherent. I would like to try one of Tohko Mizuno's series in the future, but it will not be this one.
