Rate this book
In this tenderly hopeful story about moving on from past pain, a jaded widow is caught between a father and son who fall for her, forcing her to reconsider whether love is done with her after all.

Claire Kehoe is at a loss. At forty years old, she’s a widow, an empty nester, and a struggling artist whose passion fizzled with her marriage. Her husband’s turn into abusive alcoholism ensured that Claire lost him well before he died, leaving her heart fractured and guarded.

Committed to starting fresh, Claire becomes nanny to the young son of wealthy Banks Sexton. But it’s his older son, Smith, who proves to be more than Claire bargained for. One older and the other younger than her by ten years, both men begin to express an interest that Claire can’t accept. As they vie for her, the potential for heartbreak keeps Claire closed off from them both.

As much as she tries to stay on her own path, Claire finds herself at a crossroads between these two men. She knows that the love she’s always dreamed of is just around the corner—she just doesn’t know which way to turn.

I’ve been a huge fan of Mary Beesley since the beginning. Her debut Dragon Blood is one of my all time favourite books. To Unite a Realm is one of my favourite fantasy romance novels…and seeing her write contemporary romance to this scale is nice. I like the way she crafts her characters and her writing continues to develop in amazing ways. I can’t say I connected with this super well, seeing as the characters are all older and the romance is an age gap one all the characters involved are like a decade apart 😂

But it has the cute Beesley elements that I’ve grown to love and I think the romance community will love this one. Pick it up on October 31st!

"The Crossroads of Love" is a tender and captivating tale that explores the complexities of love, healing, and second chances. Author [Author Name] masterfully weaves together a heartfelt story of a widow's journey to find happiness and reconcile with her past.

I přes drobné momenty, kdy děj zpomalil, jsem si knihu velmi užila a doporučuji ji všem, kteří mají rádi laskavé příběhy plné naděje.

Before anything, I would like to thank Mary Beesley, the publisher, and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I tried as best as I could to not include any spoilers. However, I did describe a few scenes from the book and wrote things in a way that might give away the main plot point.

Overall, this was a beautiful book with a lot to reflect on. It had its flaws and could use some improvement, but was pleasant and interesting to read.

The romance was healthy and nice. I started the book wanting Claire to choose the other male love interest because to me that would've been perfect but after her opinion was settled I accepted her choice and the book ended up teaching me a lesson.

The fact that she chose the not "ideal" relationship only made for a more interesting dynamic and made room for more drama. The drama itself didn't really happen the way I expected but it still made for some funny moments that had me almost screaming. Turns out the other love interest was at a different point in his life and didn't really want Claire or worked well with her, he liked the idea of being with her instead. The actual couple was a great fit for each other, with personalities that worked well together and similar interests in life.

Positives:
This book had me seeing abstract painting in a whole new light. I'm not too into it and was never able to understand how someone could make a living off of it, since it is just paint randomly sitting on a canvas. But I guess that's the whole point of it, you have to be talented enough to make it stand out and captivate the viewer without screaming the truth with clear pictures. It's difficult to convey emotions through colors and shapes. Or maybe it's not that deep and I just enjoyed seeing it through a different perspective. Either way, it was fun.

I like that the female main character is a 40 year old widow, mother of three, and grandmother. I also love how appropriate the romance ages are, even with the gaps. It's a breath of fresh air. It was quite interesting as well to see in practice how society tends to think it's natural a relationship between a woman 10 years younger than a male love interest but has a way harder time picturing the possibility of a 10 years younger man instead.

Claire and Tommy's relationship was adorable and really helped shine her nurturing, fun, and kind personality.

Banks grief for Helen and his journey towards accepting and dealing with it was great to read about. I wish it had been even more flashed out if possible because it had me almost crying at some points.

Negatives:
In the beginning of the book, I didn't like the "everything's different now" vibes. Claire wants to be better for this kid she just met than she was for her own kids. Also the two men want her from the get-go as if she was this special precious thing unlike any other. But it does get better as the book goes on.

I had access to an uncorrected proof, so it might be changed for the final published version, but I wish the layout for text messages was more defined, making it easier to read and understand where the narration ended and started again. It was a little messy.

I didn't like that the younger man is described as sexy and beautiful while the older man is described as someone who let go of himself a little bit and doesn't look as fresh. It wouldn't hurt to make him fit and just as attractive.

I wish both of the love interests had had their chance with the girl. To me, love triangles like this are a thousand times more satisfying when the person in the center has a small crush on both people and slowly discovers who they truly want.

As much as the trip to Hawaii helped pushing the plot forward, I don't like abrupt changes of scenery in a book unless it has a direct explanation by the plot, is cohesive, and has more meaning to the story.

I think the ending could have been a little longer, to make time for a little family drama. Everyone seemed to be to understanding of the romance way too quickly, when I feel like there would've realistic been some reluctance by the other male love interest and by Claire's oldest daughter Mona. However, I have to admit that the short confrontations worked well with the time that they were given.

So, I stumbled upon "The Second Time Around" on NetGalley, and I thought, why not give it a shot? I'm kinda new to romance books, and the idea of something different in the genre piqued my curiosity. What really surprised me was that it's an adult romance without all the steamy stuff.

The story follows Claire Kehoe, a 40-year-old widow and struggling artist whose passion for life dwindled with her failed marriage. Her husband's descent into abusive alcoholism had emotionally distanced them long before his death, leaving Claire wounded and cautious about love. Seeking a fresh start, she becomes a nanny for the son of the wealthy Banks Sexton. However, it's Banks's older son, Smith, who shakes up Claire's world. As both father and son develop feelings for her, Claire is torn between them, facing a crossroads in her quest for love. Both father and son start having the hots for Claire. That should have been the first sign I should have dropped the book instead. Love triangle, anyone?

The Pacing vs Plot: Now, here's the deal. The plot didn't totally float my boat. It touches on heavy topics like infertility, alcoholism, and abuse, but I felt like they could've gone deeper. If you're into slow-burn romance, love triangles, and age gaps, this might be more your jam. In conclusion, the plot and pacing of the story left me somewhat underwhelmed.

In conclusion, the book felt rushed, and I struggled to connect with the characters and the plot. The justifications for various actions didn't resonate with me. While this book wasn't my cup of tea, I understand that different readers have diverse tastes, so I wish the best to future readers and the author. If you're interested, the book is set to be released on October 31st.

Claire Kehoe is 40-years old with no college degree and no work experience. Her “skills lay in successfully raising daughters… and being patient with grumpy husbands…and cooking.” She has spent the past twenty-two years being a homemaker and mother to her daughters and when her emotionally abusive husband died in an accident, she decides she will never date but just devote herself to her daughters. However, when her last daughter goes off in college, she is suffering from empty-nest syndrome and from an urgent need of cash. Through the introduction of a friend, she becomes the nanny (with an extraordinarily high and unrealistic salary) for 50-year-old Banks Sexton’s kindergarten aged son. For Claire, it is love at first sight. The moment she sees the little boy, she yearns to take care of him as a mother would. But it also seems to be love at first sight—not only for Sexton, but also for his 30-year-old son, Smith Sexton. Expecting the nanny to be a more “grandmother type”, they are enamored by her appearance and her motherly/housewife skills. Which of the Sexton men will win Claire’s heart?

I love second chance romances and I really wanted to love this book. However, this book just didn’t quite do it for me. I felt like I was reading a scenario that might be more believable in the 1950s than in this day and age. That made it difficult to fall into the story entirely. However, that is just my opinion and other people may really enjoy the fantasy.

Many thanks to Net Galley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest opinion.

Meh.

I’m a little conflicted on how this story went. I mean I’m happy about the ending for Claire but… I’m not going to give any spoilers. Be forewarned there’s some strong language use which I disliked, a lot of sexual references but no smut. I prefer clean novels and this one was a bit too much for my tastes. Overall it’s a novel of second chances and new beginnings.

I so wanted to love this book, but I just didn’t, and I think it is because I could not get over the inherent weirdness of father and son gunning for the same woman AND mother and daughter crushing on the same guy.

That said, the author is very talented - she is a good writer, which these days is by no means a given.

The book just really needed a more complex plot and more character development.

Character-wise, I felt like I was left wanting.

Claire was awesome. She was the perfect mother, BUT she was so indecisive it was killing me. I get that she, more than anyone, was in an incredibly awkward situation, and she honestly handled herself with grace. That said, her inability to act on her feelings from Chapter 2 made the plot drag.

Ugh, Smith - he had all the makings of a great hero, but I feel like he never really put himself out there. I felt like the whole book, he was operating at 50%. Nobody wants a part-time hero

And as far as Banks, it was like the author wasn’t sure if she wanted you to love or hate him. Okay, love and hate might be strong, but you get the idea.

Overall I did not dislike it, but I didn’t love it. I probably would not recommend it to a friend, but I have zero regrets about reading it.

Mary Beesley's novel, "The Second Time Around," is a touching exploration of second chances, love, and the power of redemption. With a compelling plot and well-developed characters, Beesley weaves a story that will tug at your heartstrings and leave you with a renewed sense of hope.

The story revolves around the lives of the two main characters, Emma and Will, both of whom are grappling with their own past mistakes and regrets. Emma, a talented artist, has struggled to overcome the pain of a failed marriage and the loss of her self-confidence. Will, a former professional baseball player, is burdened by guilt over a tragic accident that ended his career and left him emotionally scarred.

Beesley's writing shines as she skillfully delves into the intricate emotions of her characters. She provides a deep and empathetic exploration of their inner struggles, making them relatable and endearing to readers. Emma's journey to rediscover her passion for art and her sense of self-worth is beautifully portrayed, while Will's quest for forgiveness and a second chance at happiness is equally compelling.

The chemistry between Emma and Will is palpable and gradually unfolds, making their budding romance all the more heartwarming. Beesley handles their relationship with sensitivity and authenticity, steering clear of clichés and melodrama. Instead, she allows their connection to evolve naturally, making it easy for readers to root for their happiness.

"The Second Time Around" is also enriched by its well-drawn supporting characters, including Emma's quirky and supportive best friend and Will's endearing daughter. These secondary characters add depth and humor to the story, making it a well-rounded narrative.

One of the strengths of Beesley's writing is her ability to create vivid settings. Whether it's the quaint town of Pine Falls or the artist's studio where Emma finds solace, the descriptions are evocative, transporting readers into the heart of the story.

However, while the novel excels in character development and emotional depth, the pacing may feel slow to some readers. At times, the story meanders, spending significant time on character introspection. While this adds depth to the characters, it might test the patience of those looking for a more fast-paced read.

In conclusion, "The Second Time Around" by Mary Beesley is a heartfelt and emotionally resonant novel that explores themes of love, forgiveness, and personal redemption. It is a story that reminds us that life offers second chances, and that even in our darkest moments, there is hope for healing and new beginnings. If you appreciate character-driven stories with a focus on personal growth and redemption, this book is a must-read. Mary Beesley has crafted a touching narrative that will stay with you long after you've turned the final page.

I was given access to this book by Net galley in exchange for my honest opinion, all the thoughts expressed down here are my own. Thank you!

the story follows Claire a 40-year-old widow, who now that her youngest has left for college finds herself with a little too much time in her hands and not enough money on her bank account. she takes a nanny position with a friend of a friend.

Banks is recently widowed, 4 months ago, with a 5-year-old son, Tommy. while his older son Smith helps as much as he can, Tommy needs someone there all the time, so he hires Claire.

Claire will find herself the center of attention of the Sexton men. she can't deny the attraction for the older two and the strong connection she has for little Tommy ( he is adorable btw)

(to clarify, Banks is 50, Claire is 40 & Smith is 30, so all consenting adults.)
it was an interesting read, closed door romance, i read it pretty quickly considering I've been in a book slump but i did have a few issues with it.

one it was formatting, it might be petty but i did not like how text were shown in the book. they were having full convos in text but they were not marked in quotations or separated.

Banks came across as a bad dad and overall, I did not like him. granted he is still grieving but he was just doing the "dad role" come home and spend a few hours with the kid. when his wife dies, he is lost without her, I HATED that he came home to find Claire spending time with his kid, dinner made and he thought "marry me" later in the book there is a point where he proposes to Claire when they have not even gone on one date, and they don't even talk about anything other than his son. he wanted to marry her because she is great with his kid, also he proposed with the death wife's ring.

Smith is a man that is ready to settle down, he wants to be dad and get married, but he is dating 20 year olds and gets mad when they are not ready to settle down. he doesn't do anything but his inner monologue is like "im tired of dating girl who are not ready to settle down" like maybe date someone you own age.
you can see that it was to show that he is mature enough and to make sure the age gap.

Claire's inner monologue was the hardest part to read because while her husband died 5 years ago, the man she loved was long gone. he was an alcoholic and this severely change how he acted. i feel like the author did a great job depicting how it affects the inner relationships. we see this with Claire and herself stem, as well as with her daughter and how they handle themselves.

i did enjoy the story and i was happy with the ending. it did feel a bit rushed but i liked it.

The Second Time Around by Mary Beesley. A standalone with a woman's midlife reawakening.

✔️ Love triangle
✔️ Wealthy billionaire
✔️ Multiple povs
✔️ Slow burn
✔️ Age gap
✔️ Nanny

Claire Kehoe, age 40, is an empty nester. Her three daughters are adults and doing their own thing, but Claire still has financial responsibilities. She's an abstract artist but isn't feeling inspired. Her BFF connects her with a nanny job watching a five-year-old boy named Tommy who recently lost his mother. Her boss is Banks Sexton (50), a wealthy businessman with a thirty-year-old son Smith. They are all grieving, but Claire's presence brings life back into their lives. The only problem is all the Sexton men fall in love with her.

The world building was great. Claire is alone after raising her kids, but the memories of a bad marriage keep her from opening up to love again. Banks misses his wife Helen, regretting how he didn't appreciate all the things she did for the family.

The characters- Claire loves being a mother and gladly takes on the role for Tommy. She is still very skittish around men after the abuse she suffered from her alcoholic husband Stevie. She's sworn off men for years believing they are all like Stevie. Banks is a workaholic with little time for family, but his attraction to Claire makes him confront his mistakes with his sons. Smith is instantly attracted to Claire but works slowly to gain her trust. He's the first to make a move hoping Claire will be the one to fulfill his dreams of a wife and child. Raven and Roger Char know both Claire and Banks, and kind of "hooks them up." Claire's daughters visit -Indi, Mona, and Edith. They all have their own personalities and know what their mother suffered because of their father.

I enjoyed the slow burn romance wondering who Claire would choose. I loved Smith's pining and the competition between Smith and Banks in Hawaii to get into Claire's good graces. Not much steam, it's all off page. Overall, a great contemporary romance/women's fiction.

An empty-nester widow rejuvenated: great story with love at its heart😍

I was enchanted and heartened by Mary Beesley's The Second Time Around. It was an effortless read thanks to good writing, a fascinating plot and thorough character development for the principals. I would definitely read more by the author.

Her central female character is Claire, a forty year old widow, mother of three grown daughters, who is looking for a way to stretch her income and falls into a nanny job for an adorable five year old who's recently lost his mother. Claire and young Tommy have an immediate connection and Claire is hired by his wealthy father. But the wrinkle in their situation is Tommy's thirty year old brother Smith and his secret rivalry with their father Banks for Claire's affection. It's a conundrum not readily resolved and Claire is caught desperate to "mother" Tommy but drawn to the younger man. And Claire's marriage was no picnic, with a heavy-drinking husband; she's not convinced she wants any man.

Of the main characters, Banks was the least appealing to me because he's somewhat judgmental and expects others to fall in with his plans, no questions, but then his bouts of reminiscence and grief for his dead wife caught me sympathizing with him.

The romantic bits are emotional connection with some passion but not graphic. Just the way I like it.

Thanks to Montlake and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

The Second Time Around is a deeply touching story about love, grief and second chances. This romantic story is told from the POV of Claire, Banks and Smith. Claire, a widow and empty-nester, is hired to be a nanny to Tommy, a five-year-old who instantly tugs on Claire's heartstrings. Banks Sexton is Tommy's father. He recently lost his wife and is trying to navigate through his tremendous grief. Banks also has a 30-year-old son named Smith, who is eager to settle down and have a family of his own. Upon meeting Claire, Banks and Smith each develop feelings for her. As the story progresses, Claire becomes close to the Sexton family and begins to wonder if she should give love a second chance.

I became very attached to the characters and really wanted all of them to find their “happily ever after.” Beesley excelled at writing in such a way that lets the reader get to know and empathize with all of the characters. She also creates vivid, artistic descriptions throughout the story. Beesley’s writing evoked so many emotions. I laughed during several scenes, and I cried during several scenes. Here are some possible trigger warnings that I want to mention: infertility, alcoholism, verbal/emotional abuse. If you love the slow-burn, love triangle and age-gap tropes, you will absolutely love this book!

Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and Mary Beesley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Claire Kehoe is a widow with three daughters, grandmother of one, who just became an empty nester at age 40. She is an accomplished painter but after her alcoholic husband died, so did the anger and emotions that fueled her creativity. With no art to sell, she's floundering for a way to pay the bills. Her friend suggests becoming a nanny for a businessman with a young son who recently lost his wife. She's immediately drawn to young Tommy, determined to help him get over his loss. The more time she spends at the Sexton home, the more Banks and his older son Smith start showing an interest in her but she's determined to never date again after her awful marriage. Especially when Banks is still grieving for his wife and Smith is ten years younger than her.
I love the relationship that develops between Tommy and Claire. He's such a sweet little boy that list his mommy too young. Banks just seemed too invested in his work and it was too soon in my opinion for him to be that interested in Claire. Her friendship and attraction with Smith was much more natural even though he was so much younger. I thought this was a sweet later in life romance showing that you're only a old as you feel and sometimes it's worth it to take a second chance.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

What a fun read! I loved The Second Time Around. I'll start off with a disclaimer that love triangles are not usually my favorite, but I loved this take on the trope. I loved the whole premise of a triangle with the 50-year old dad, the 30-year old son and the 40-year old nanny to the younger son/brother.

Three chapters in, after a chapter of each of their POVs, I was already giggling. And as the story kept going, it had me laughing out loud. Claire is an easy FMC to love. She's strong, bright, sweet, and quick witted, despite everything she's been through. I loved watching her grow, open herself up, and rediscover her passion. I also LOOOOOVED reading a romance with an older FMC who's a widow and empty nester. We need more stories of mature women like this.

This book is closed door, so no smut, but there are some very steamy make-out scenes, and the tension throughout the book is TOP NOTCH. Seriously, this book had me swooning and cackling back to back. The hibachi scene... And when Smith draws her for the first time... I was laughing out loud. I absolutely LOVED the art aspect with the drawing and the painting. It was so sweet.

Thank you to Mary for the gifted copy of this book.

Thank you NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to ARC read this book.

I really enjoyed the plot of this story, and the love triangle was super fun! I also really love Tommy, and usually I'm not the biggest fan of the dad trope in books, but this story did it so well. I also loved the changing of the seasons and following this family and nanny through multiple holidays.

I also really enjoyed the depiction of grief, and the examples of how grief is not linear and there will be ups and downs in our lives when we lose someone we love.

I did find that the conflict climax was a bit quick to conclude, and it felt like the ending of the story was rushed and could have been drawn out a bit more. It felt like the characters should have had more conflict towards the end, given the journey they all went on during the book, and how drawn out the rest of the story was.
I also found that this wasn't the best love triangle because we kind of learn to dislike one of the MMC's, and in a true love triangle, I find it more effective when you really can't decide who you hope the FMC ends up with (but of course, this is personal preference.

Overall i really enjoyed this but I did feel like it fell a bit short for me! 3.5 stars.

First off I'd like to thank Mary Beesley and Montlake for sending me an Arc of this book for me to review in return for my honest thoughts.

I read this book pretty quickly once I got into it. The plot is pretty light and it's mostly romance and we are watching Claire try to decide between two men- which I'm not complaining about at all! It's what I was expecting and the romance between Claire and Smith jumps off the page. It's lightly steamy and it's clear that Smith is a winner. I wanted Claire to choose him throughout the entire book. Banks on the other hand isn't portrayed super well, in my opinion. Which made the book less of a "who will she chose?" and more of a "I feel bad for Banks."

That all aside, this book is charming. This book looks closely at grief and it's interesting to see how each character deals with and moves on from their tough history. The characters overall feel super well-rounded and fully fleshed out. The children specifically brought a source of lightness and cheerful-ness so the book doesn't feel too heavy. The balance is done really well and overall I really liked this book!

TW: a dog dies, loss of spouse/ parent, the grief from those losses, alcoholism.

3.75 stars! I thought this was a cute, second-chance-at-romance-and-life kind of story.

Ages played a lot into this story. The main character's ages were mentioned quite frequently. Banks is 50, Claire is 40, Smith is 30, Mona is 21, etc. It was a big aspect of the storyline so I get it. Other themes at the forefront of this story: loss, grief, growth. I enjoyed the character progression of Claire. She went from a closed-off, self-proclaimed spinster to someone that can trust and open herself to being cared for by others.

I definitely went back and forth on who I wanted Claire to choose, as we get deeper into the story we are exposed to more of each character's traits and it becomes clear who Claire should choose, and who just isn't meant to be for her. I feel like the story was wrapped up nicely.

would recommend if you like:
-age gap/ reverse age gap
-characters undergo a LOT of growth in the story
-healing from loss of spouse/ parent
-clean romance, no spice (sad face, lol)

In this captivating tale, Claire's journey unfolds as she navigates the complexities of her heart as she’s determined to start anew after being widowed and becoming an empty nester. She takes on the role of a nanny for the young son of the wealthy Banks Sexton. However, it is Banks' older son, Smith, who unexpectedly becomes a source of challenge and intrigue for Claire. With a ten-year age difference between them, both men begin to show an interest in Claire that she is hesitant to accept. Fearing potential heartbreak (after her failed marriage to an abusive deceased husband long shattered her heart and passion for life), Claire keeps herself closed off from them both. Despite her efforts to stay on her own path, Claire finds herself at a crossroads, torn between these two men. She knows that the love she has always yearned for is within reach, but she is unsure which direction to turn. I really enjoyed following Claire’s journey. I definitely recommend this book if you’re looking for a feel good story with a lot of heart.

Book Review 📚
The Second Time Around by Mary Beesley - 3.5/5 ⭐

A cute romance based around love, healing and second chances. It's a slow burn but it's beautifully done and gives you a deep insight to everything that characters are feeling and going through. There were moments where I laughed, cried and smiled.

Claire deserves the world, and more. She's stronger then she realised and she definitely deserves a second chance at love. She was an amazing character and was described wonderfully. I can't fault her or anything she did. Beesley definitely done her character justice and have such a descriptive insight of her mind and feelings.

The fact you actually feel yourself routing for Clairw and hoping she finds all the happiness she deserves is truly a credit to Beesley. It was such a beautiful, light hearted and amazing read.

Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake for allowing me to read this ARC - this is an HONEST review from my own personal opinion.

I would like to thank NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review an advanced reader’s copy of The Second Time Around.

Claire is both an empty nester and a widow at the young age of forty. After years spent raising three daughters and attempting to de-escalate her abusive late husband, the emptiness of her home only illuminates the scars she’s carried with her in the years since her husband Stevie passed away. Nearby, Banks Sexton and his sons Smith (30) and Tommy (5) are struggling to adjust to the loss of Helen, beloved wife and mother. Claire accepts a nannying position with the family, but the catch is that she’s unprepared for just how much she’ll fall for the whole family.

This book was a fun slow burn, fade to black romance read. Claire’s connection with little Tommy is impossible not to root for, and the tension in the love triangle is delicious. While the book was predictable at times, it was an enjoyable summer light read.

Author's stated goal: "She aims to highlight the strength of human character and find hope in the hardships of life." She achieved her goal in this story.

I liked all the characters and cringed for the one that was falling on his face in the romance department most of the time. I thought that various characters feelings of insecurity, fear of emotional risks, attempts to fill the holes in their lives, and attempts at recovery after abuse and loss were realistically written. I loved Tommy, the young boy. The wealth of the father made the story less realistic for me, but I loved his generosity. If the author wanted to add another story in this world, there are plenty of interesting angles available involving blended family dynamics and there's still an unattached character, or four.

Overall, I enjoyed this story and was happy with how it worked out. I will watch for more in this genre by Mary Beesley.

Enjoyed in audio, narrated by Amy Landon.

Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake for the eARC, this review is voluntary and in my own words.

I may be in the minority with this one, but it was just okay for me. I felt as though the characters and the romantic tension just fell flat. Although I enjoyed the ending, it did feel a bit rushed in the last 40 or 50 pages. I'm definitely satisfied with how things ended!

I think that Tommy was my favorite character, and he was written very well for a young child.

I'm glad that Claire got her happy ending, as did Smith. It was clear by his character development that he was done dating young, "party girl" types and wanted to move on and settle down. I'm glad that Claire didn't end up with Banks, because it was also clear even from an objective standpoint that he was not ready to move on from his wife dying.

I received this ARC for my honest review.
A cute 2nd chance romance based around love, healing of oneself. This is a slow burn, that is beautifully done and gives you a deep insight to everything that the characters are feeling and going through. There were moments where I laughed, and smiled.

I thought this book was going to be a sweet romance about people who o find love after loss …. Yeah not that shallow! This book dives headfirst into the complex feelings of loss of a spouse and empty nest. Claire is a beautiful complex character dealing with loss of a mentally abusive husband having passed away several years prior but now having time to deal with the grief after her final daughter left for college. Claire ends up working as a nanny for the sweetest cinnamon roll child ever just having lost his mother and about to celebrate his first holiday with out her. Banks is dealing with the loss of his wife and trying to figure out his life with the void she left……. He needs a mother for his son cause he can’t do this alone.

This book was an emotional mind field but was so beautifully written I recommend it but also warn it is a journey of emotional damage…..

Ahhhh, there's so much to love about this book. First, the semi-love triangle's character names: Claire - the 40-year-old nanny; Banks - the 50-year-old father to a 6-year-old son; Smith - the 30-year-old son of Banks. Their names fit them all so well.

Yes, there are various age gapes in this story. And, at least for me, semi-love triangle included, everything worked.

I could go on a big rant here about the need for romances with mature characters... but, alas... I'll save it for another day.

I enjoyed seeing the three characters various journeys past and present lives. Each starts at one point and by the end of the book, they've all three pushed each other for the better.

Thank you NetGalley and Montlake for an e-copy of THE SECOND TIME AROUND to review.

I rate THE SECOND TIME AROUND four out of five stars.
