I've been enjoying Barbara Cameron's novels about contemporary mostly Pennsylvania Dutch Amish culture very much. Just as with her other books, in One True Path that's Book 3 of the Amish Roads Series, Cameron brings us some days in the lives that are far more up-close and personal than you'd get in a typical bird's eye view from the sky, more meaningful than what neighbors next door might imagine they'd learned about the family in the house next to theirs by watching them come and go or by casting quick glances into windows. Every one of us lives the moments of our days at a small scale micro level; events and experiences of a young on-again, off-again couple, Rachel Ann and Abram are no different from what's been happening to people all around the country and in most parts of the digitized universe. At first the days of their lives appear simpler, plainer, and easier to deal with than, but given the complexity of human emotions, desires, memories, and histories, I'm not convinced that's the case. Since I've read other books by Cameron, I liked getting reacquainted with and updated on some of the characters I'd previously met.
Amish interactions with nearby Englisch (who are all non-Amish, not only those of British Isles heritage and ancestry) folks and tourists from outside the greater Lancaster County area especially interest me. End of the book includes ...recipes again, and I hope for different ones next time... and excerpts from the first two books in the series: A Road Unknown, that's now on my to-read list, and Crossroads, that I've already read and reviewed.
3 1/2 stars. Good story—I just wish there was more of it. I really like these characters. I feel like I’ve spent time with them and gotten to know a little more about them.
It touches on the topic of endometriosis which is a condition that affects many, many women. When I was first diagnosed NO ONE talked openly about this. There were no commercials or even doctors who readily acknowledged it. Though I diagnosed her in about the third chapter, this is something that in actuality can only be diagnosed through surgery. That could have made a longer and more complex story. Thinking back on all it took to just be heard, I can’t imagine how tough it would be for an Amish woman in a small town to be heard.
I really enjoyed reading this book.It was a beautiful love story that shows we just need to keep our faith that everything will work out for the best.A great book for any age.
One True Path Cameron, Barbara 3 F. Amish Amish girl dating "English" boyfriend pushing her to leave her family for him & neighbor long time friend Amish man supports her no matter what 2015 5/20/2015
I really enjoyed this book but disappointed it didn’t have an epilogue. This story needed it to truly end the hero and heroine’s love story. Happy reading/listening!
One offer that I NEVER refuse, is to review a book in the Amish Fiction genre. Excitement reigns in this household, especially when it is requested by the author herself! I have read every book by Barbara Cameron and have never been disappointed. Each one is unique and keeps me intrigued from the first page. "One True Path" is no exception to this! As I have read the first two book in this series, I eagerly delved into this new one, wondering what adventures I would encounter.
Synopsis:
Amish marriages are forever. Abram Lapp believes he could love his neighbor forever, but Rachel Ann is enjoying her Rumschpringe, exploring Englisch life with a very Englisch boy named Michael. As Abram watches Rachel Ann stray from the life he had hoped for them, he regrets not telling her that his feelings for her have deepened.
Rachel Ann loves the freedom she has away from the familiar Amish rules and responsibilities. But when tragedy strikes and her brother is critically wounded in an accident, she begins to feel a pull toward home. She struggles with guilt and throws herself into working two jobs to help with hospital expenses. Leaning on Michael for support, she realizes he might not be the man she needs…or wants. Could the husband she has hoped for be waiting right next door?
Barbara Cameron's has a special talent of describing her characters realistically and in such detail that you can easily identify with them. Rachel Ann became one of my friends, one to whom I wanted to give advice and a big hug every time she encountered a challenge or problem and this seemed to be a LOT of the time. Her confusion about many important life decisions were felt deep within me. Can Rachel Ann leave a faith that she has been born into and raised to follow? She enjoys freedom in the new Englischer life that she has been taking part in, but is this enjoyment going to last?? Will a new love last or is it just the feeling of the moment, that will die away?
The plot moves at a quick pace which keeps you glued to your seat until you have reached the last page. There are many twists and turns that complicate the situations that occur. Just when you think you have figured out all the answers, there is another surprise lurking around the corner.
I would highly recommend this book! It is a winner!! Barbara Cameron has once again succeeded in writing an Amish novel that is unique and not quite the norm. That is exactly what keeps me reading her creations!! I can hardly wait to see what she comes up with next!!
The ebook was provided by the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.
It was interesting for me to see the Amish from a different group (for lack of me coming up with a better word). This group of Amish embrace a more modern way of life than some of the other Amish books I have read. Almost closer to Mennonite than Amish; I wonder if that is because they are situated so close to the biggest tourist attractions in Pennsylvania? Or perhaps it is merely the authors perspective.
Abram and Rachel Ann grew up together and Abram loves Rachel Ann form afar. Rachel Ann is going through her Rumschpringe and is showing great interest (dating) an Englisch boy. This is wonderful for Rachel Ann until an accident happens involving Rachel Ann's 4 year old brother...one that could have dire consequences. This accident starts Rachel Ann down a path that could either make her or break her.
Abram is giving Rachel Anne all the support she could possibly need and she just doesn't see that Abram has deeper feelings for her than just being friends. Until what could have been another tragedy strikes again.
This book managed to pull a lot of emotion out of me and it even had me weeping at one point.
I was astounded at the casual use of cell phones, the usage of modern lingo such as "periods" instead of hinting at 'female problems', using a modern gynecological visit and the describing of such.
I think that some of these things made this an easier book for me to read, but it did take away some of the mystery that I have the Amish cloaked in! I don't usually read religious themed books -I don't want to be preached to since I have no religion of my own, but I did love this book and never once felt that preachy feeling or the need to skim parts.
This book is perfect for those who are of a different religion or no religion and just want to gain perspective to another culture...or to those who want to read romance but are tired of the blatant sex and foul language.
"Michael accelerated from the curb, taking off with such speed the rear end fishtailed... He slammed on his brakes, but the bumper caught Sam and the impact tossed him into the air like a rag doll."
Rachel Ann has been going through her running around years and seeing an English guy named Michael. One day Michael shows up while Rachel Ann is babysitting her 4-year-old brother and Michael gets annoyed that she can't go for a ride so he speeds away, makes a U-turn and races back to talk to her again when Sam darts out into the street. He ends up in a coma for weeks. All through this time she comes to see Michael's true character and realizes that he is just looking to have a good time and does not really care about her or her family. Her neighbor and childhood best friend, Abram, helps her and her family through everything, even so much as working for Rachel Ann's father at the furniture shop and having the boss pay her father for everything Abram does. He finally admits how much he cares for Rachel Ann and she had no idea. Was love just next door all this time?
This is book 3 of the Amish Roads series. It is a very fast, short read. Pacing and speed are moderate to fast, told from the third person following Abram and Rachel Ann. This is not your typical Amish book. Our characters are a bit older than u would normally find in an Amish book, them being in their early 20's. The bishop in this community must be very lax since Abram has a cell phone and the women are allowed to wear colored dresses instead of black or even grey. This community aounds more Mennonite than Amish.
Good book, especially if you are looking for something to read quickly over 2 nights. I finished it in a day, but I read fast. Christian approved. Very predictable. 3 out of 5 stars. I would recommend.
I have enjoyed all of the books in this Amish Roads Series, but I think this story was my favorite. Who doesn't enjoy a sensitive, caring male lead? Abram is all that and more.
Rachel Ann and Abram have been neighbors and best friends since childhood. Rachel Ann has been occupied dating an Englischer, Michael. She gets herself into some trouble one night. Abram senses she needs his love and devotion more than ever, so he finally shares his true feelings and his desire/dream for a life together with her.
Rachel Ann must wrestle with health issues and fears she won't be a good wife for Abram. Through his patient, compassionate, and kind ways she sees he is the man God has chosen for her to marry.
Several recipes for Rachel Ann's baked goods are shared by the author in the back of the book. Also, an announcement about an upcoming Christmas novella entitled, 'Twice Blessed', containing two stories about two sets of twins (one female, one male) living in this community. I can't wait to start my Christmas reading later this autumn!
I highly recommend this book and this series to fans of Amish, inspirational, and Christian fiction.
I borrowed a copy of this book from our local public library.
The Amish and Mennonite communities encourage large families. Rachel Ann loves her boyfriend but sets him free after the doctor tells her she will be unable to have children after she is diagnosed with endometriosis. After the breakup both Rachel Ann and Abraham are miserable because they want to be with each other. When he finds out why she broke up with him he becomes upset telling her she must not know him very well if she can just assume he wouldn't want to be with her if they can't have children. He wants her for herself and not the children she can give him telling her if they have children or not it's God's will. I have read many of Barbara Cameron's other books and enjoyed them as I have this one and look forward to reading more of them!
Rachel Ann has been enjoying her running around years dating an Englisher Michael. Abram, her next door neighbor has been in love with her for a very long time. When Rachel's brother Sam is injured from her Englisher friends driving, Rachel understands Michael is only in for a good time. Sam has a slow recovery and Rachel's family and community and especially Abram bond to get through this time. Abram finally tells Rachel about his feelings for her. Rachel has to decide about where her heart really is and if she wants to embrace the Amish life and get baptized. Then she has to sort out her feelings for Abram. Quick read, held my attention eventhough it had a predictable ending.
Loved, Loved, Loved this book. A fantastic read for Amish fiction readers. Abram has been in love with Rachel Ann who has been his friend since school. An accident brings them closer but sad news breaks them up again. Will they find their way back to each other. You must read to find out.
This is the third and last in the Amish Road Series by Barbara Cameron "One True Path" Rachel Anne has finial found her happiness or so she thinks, away from so much structure of home, working at Stirches in time and away from home and her little brother Sam who is four and a Hand full. Abram Rachel's neighbor believes he could be totally content loving Rachel and living on his farm for the rest of his life but he fears Rachel will leave for the English world. Then there is Michael the English guy Rachel starting seeing will he stay by her side? After a terrible accident where Sam is hurt Rachel makes some tough decisions, it's during this time her eyes are opened to get true path. This is a wonderful book and I would really recommend it. The whole series was great.
