I was born on a farm in the state of Iowa, Audubon County, Lincoln Township. To say that my upbringing was bucolic would be an understatement. My first writing was for the Audubon Advocate as the Douglas Township correspondent. I was 13 and received the magnificent sum of $.03 per line. If the item were published in the society section, the pay increased to $.04. The monthly check was always under $5.00.
My mother took me to Phoenix, AZ when it became impossible for me to eat, sleep, or breathe in Iowa. The climate restored my health and I attended school there, graduated, and married my high school sweetheart. Together we raised two wonderful children. During this time I started writing stories and sold one story to Jack and Jill. In 1976 he moved us to Western Washington to escape the desert sun. Washington is a land where it can and did rain 133 1/3 inches of water a year. He was a finish carpenter contractor; I did the books, and worked for Nintendo of America. Upon retirement, we returned to the desert and this wonderful, quirky town of Twenynine Palms. We had just celebrated our 45th wedding anniversary when he passed away.
I serve on the Twentynine Palms Historical Society as a docent, and write a column for the Old Schoolhouse Journal.
This story is the sixth in the Maca of Don series. It contains the most intrigue of all the books. There are plots by the Sisters to overthrow all the Macas and kill all those who are males. There are those who support the Sisters, in both Ishner, one of the continents of Thalia and of Medicine, another continent. There is a plot to conceal two Sisters who murder the Thalian daughter of Llewellyn, the Maca of Don and his wife (called counselor). And there are questions to be answered about the Book of Gar, the Kenning Woman (does she have real visions) and their marriage. Finally there are questions to be raised about the new Maca of Ishner and how it is that no one knew who he was as he was being raised by the Maca of Don. The intricate details of the machinations of the Sisters and the others of the Council of the Realm are fascinating. After reading six books of this series I finally became convinced I knew what was going on here. The book is well written, is a cross over book but not for young teens or tweens. It is a good read that requires some willingness to do some rereading as you go along. I really enjoyed this one.
If you haven't read a book by this author, you are missing out. The journey of the Macas continues with a few new twists and turns. Even other worlds have problems with Aliens and the author indulges readers with a well written story that has more than its' share of excitement. Book 6 in the series is a good one to read as war looms and struggles continue.
We find the family back on Thalia and the suspense unfolds like never before. Fall and Rise of the Macas is action-packed from start to finish! It is full of power struggles, new aliens, manipulation, secrets, and murder. Thalians are killing Thalians! That is a line that is never crossed, until now. This book had my attention to the very last line. I didn’t want it to end! (5+ stars)
