Hollywood Renaissance #1.5

The Close-Up: A Hollywood Renaissance Novella

Rate this book
Set in the dynamic worlds of professional basketball and entertainment, two of Kennedy Ryan’s most critically-acclaimed series—HOOPs and Hollywood Renaissance—collide in this tale of forbidden romance.

I met Nazareth Armstrong when I was eighteen years old. From the beginning, my brother warned me to stay away from him. Told Naz to stay away from me.

Our hearts didn’t listen.

I shared one magical night under the stars with my brother's rival, thinking it was the start of a once-in-a-lifetime something. But one awful moment ended it all.

Years later when we meet again, we’ve both pursued our dreams, lived a little, found success…but never found love. What began as a tiny flame when we were young now threatens to consume us. I’m more drawn to Naz than ever, but his complicated history with my brother makes whatever this could be…nearly impossible.

But Naz accepts impossible as a dare.

Through his clever maneuvering and dogged determination, I find myself on a yacht with him and his friends cruising through the Mediterranean. It’s a whirlwind set ablaze. Away from reality, surrendering to the tender heat of his touch, I forget that everything could burn.

*This is the love story of Takira, who first appears in Reel , book 1 of the Hollywood Renaissance series. Characters from the HOOPS series also make appearances, but you do not have to read any of those books to enjoy this one.

**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you'll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

In a world that feels gray, she’s a burst of color, and she shines.

Kennedy Ryan’s newest work, a crossover novella between her Hoops books and her Hollywood Renaissance book was a real treat.

The Close-Up has a bit of a second chance at love as well as a touch of forbidden romance. Takira is a hair and makeup artist and she met Nazareth when they were seniors in high school. They had one special night together, but everything shattered when there was some drama with her brother.

Fast forward twelve years later and Naz and Kira are back in the same place. It’s like it was meant to be. Naz is a pro-baller and you know what that means… we get lots of our favorite Hoops characters in this! That was one of my favorite things about this one. Jared and Banner. My faves.

I enjoyed Naz and Kira’s story so much. It had a lot of heat and was fun to read. This couple had insane chemistry and Kennedy Ryan’s writing is always fantastic! I know all fans of the Hoops series will love this one, but fyi you can read this as a complete stand-alone as well!

The Close-Up is one very steamy second chance novella. It’s also a reunion for the Hoops and Reel fans out there. All characters from those books reunite and it was so good. But first and foremost the main story about Takira and Naz was close to set my kindle on fire from the very first moment they met when they were eighteen. Flash forward to twelve years later and the chemistry was even more palpable. I enjoy a woman who’s secure in herself and her sexuality and Takira was definitely that. She knows what she wants and is very vocal about it and it was so hot. Naz was a fabulous and swoon worthy hero. Attentive, caring and a beast in the sack. Their two weeks together on a cruise was so entertaining and it only got better cause of the Hoops family.
Oh how I wished this was a full novel. Absolutely Fabulous.

Takira Fletcher grew up in Houston, Texas where she was raised in a Trinidad-American household. When she was a senior in high school she meets the most beautiful boy she’s ever seen. They share one magical night she never forgets. He leaves an impression, but sadly circumstances get in the way. She’s now living in Los Angeles as a celebrity makeup artist working in the entertainment industry when her path crosses again with Naz. Kira hasn’t seen him since they were teenagers, but their attraction and undeniable connection is just as strong. He has a complicated history with her brother, but he still makes her feel way too much. He’s tempting, intense, and dangerous to her heart, but could their timing finally be right? She never thought they would come face to face again, but suddenly the possibilities for something real seem endless.

Nazareth Armstrong is a famous NBA baller whose star has risen over the years. He’s private, reserved, and doesn’t let many get close to him. Then he sees the one that got away. It’s been twelve years since he’s seen Kira, and he’s still drawn to her. They clicked all those years ago, but he had to let her go. He’s never stopped thinking of her, and still wants her. He thinks they have something worth exploring and finds her fascinating. When they are stuck in paradise together he decides it’s time to pursue her. Will he convince her to give him another chance, or will they walk away?

This was fantastic. I'm consistently amazed at how expertly Kennedy creates a romance between two people that feels like they are meant to be from the moment they lay eyes on each other. She does soulmate connection better than anyone and the fact that this was in a novella? Color me impressed.

This has characters from both Reel and the Hoops series, which was SO MUCH FUN.

Takira and Naz meet at 18, while still in high school, and their connection is undeniable. They have one amazing night and are separated for 12 years. When they both wind up on a cruise for two weeks that connection flares to life again.

This was so entertaining and equal parts swoony and steamy. A must read for Kennedy fans both old and new!

Such cute (and spicy🥵) little novella to pass the time.
Naz and Takira met at 18 and reconnected later in life and the sparks never left.
It was so good being reacquainted with all the characters from the Hoops series and mentions of other characters from other KR novels. I’d definitely recommend this one to get into for “Novella November”🩷

Beautifully delicious and very, very SEXY! A HOT novella. This story was a pure indulgent treat and totally gorgeous. I loved every minute.

'The Close-Up,' sees two of Kennedy Ryan's most popular fictional worlds—HOOPS & Reel— come together and also tells us more about old favourites. This novella story will delight fans of KRB's and offers a standalone sexy short for her new readers, and a fabulous intro into her story worlds and writing.

I love books where strong females take centre stage and in particular ROMANCE is my favourite genre, and Kennedy Ryan writes the absolute best! Renowned for her deep issue based and emotionally driven stories, 'The Close-Up,' offers a lighter shade of her portfolio but equally raises the temperature with the hotness value. A perfectly formed novella that is beautiful and totally made me blush!

“How did this happen? How did we find this? Find each other for the
first time and again? That person whose heart carries the key to yours—that
soul that is a mirror reflecting yours. It’s a connection not apparent to the
naked eye, but unearthed, discovered in whispered conversations, in stolen
kisses and urgent touches. Burrowing through layers of skin and bone and muscle
until it strikes soul.”

A crossover between two of Kennedy Ryan’s most beloved series? Count me in! The Close-Up is a forbidden / second-chance romance and trust me when I say you don’t want to miss reading this delicious novella. While you fall in love with this new couple, you’ll also be able to catch up with many of your favorite characters, so what is not to love, am I right?

So, as I mentioned, The Close-Up is a crossover short story between Ryan’s Hoops and Hollywood Renaissance series. Takira Fletcher and Nazareth Armstrong meet as 18 year olds and they share a very beautiful (and forbidden) connection during one night. Circumstances stop them from meeting again. Twelve years pass, they reunite again, both having found success and their chemistry is still there. Naz is determined to pursue Kira, even though the past is still very much between them. Will their connection be enough this time?

She glows.
In a world that feels gray, she’s a burst of color, and she shines.

You probably know by now that Kennedy Ryan is one of my top favorite authors. The woman sure knows how to write unique, powerful love stories. While this one is much shorter, The Close-Up continues having all the aspects we love about Ryan’s creations and I am pretty sure any fan of the two series will be happy with this novella and having more moments with some of our favorite characters. Naz and Kira literally have the most burning chemistry, I mean, this story is STEAMY. And I am here for it! I loved the reunion of this couple and reading how they finally find happiness together.

I’m putty in his hands, and he’s putty in mine, and with every touch, we mold each other into exactly what the other needs, while never losing ourselves.

Therefore, I am rating The Close-Up with 4.5 STARS because I am always happy to get more of Kennedy Ryan’s writing and having a new couple to love. The connection between Takira and Naz was so intense and so hawt! I really enjoyed this novella and getting more scenes with the characters from Hoops and Hollywood Renaissance. Be sure to check this short story, guys!

This crossover novella was everything I didn’t know I needed!! The Close-Up follows the soulmate connection between Takira and Naz. If you read Reel, then you remember Takira was Navaeh’s bestie and makeup artist. Takira and Naz met over a decade ago when they were in high school. A romantic rooftop moment solidified their connection, but something pretty horrible happens that drives them in separate directions. Naz is now a famous basketballer and Takira is an up and coming celebrity stylist. They reunite during a twist of fate by both of them helping with a charity fashion show organized by Lotus and Iris (from the Hoops series). Now that Takira is back, Naz ain’t letting her go!!! Throw in a little forced proximity due to a birthday yacht cruise for Kenan Ross’ birthday, and we got us a 5 star novella!

I don’t know how Kennedy managed to give us full story vibes in a novella, but she did it! I was rooting for Takira and Naz from the moment they laid eyes on each other. Their emotional and physical chemistry was RIDICULOUSLY sexy. The novella was also nostalgic because we got to spend some close time with the couples from the Hoops series, who I adore.

Fans of the Hoops series, along with Reel, will love this novella, but it can be read as a standalone. I can’t wait for Takira and Naz’s bonus epilogue!

TROPES: second chance; athlete hero; makeup artist heroine; forced proximity; novella

TRIGGER WARNINGS: mentions of drug use/overdose

The crossover novella between Hollywood world and 1001 dark nights world .
Kennedy brings over Takira from Reel and gives her her own forbidden romance.
Her brothers arch nemesis is Takira Fletchers heartstopper.
Nazareth "Naz" took the chance Cliff Fletcher lost.
He stepped up when cliff hit his way down and the resentment is the fourth main character in the story
That brings forth guilt which plagues Kira & Naz relationship from that one night on the roof to this day on the boat.
Very tumultuous, very enticing but equally angsty, Kennedy pens flawlessly the jumbled mess of emotions ,one thread at a time.
Passion meter is so high , the screams could be heard from pages in my ears !!!

The Close-up is a crossover between Hoops Series and Hollywood Renaissance. I loved that so many of the Hoops couple were sprinkled throughout the story of Naz and Takira. This story is steamy and off the charts hot!! For being a novella, it packed a whole lot of punch with not a lot of drama. From the moment Naz and Takira met, they had an instant connection and while it took 12 years to reconnect, there was never any doubt that they would end up together. A lovely second chance romance that brings alot of heat!!

The Close-Up is the crossover novella that collides two of Kennedy Ryan’s series, Hoops and Hollywood Renaissance! Everything Kennedy writes is just so good and this second chance treat was no exception.

“It’s not how long you’ve had together. Maybe it’s what you could have.”

We first met Takira in Reel, she was roommates and best friends with the heroine Neevah of that book. This story starts off with Takira meeting Nazareth Armstrong, her brother’s highschool basketball teammate and rival/competition, when she’s just 18-years-old. Her brother Cliff told her to stay away from Naz, and for Naz to stay away from Kira…but neither of their hearts listened. Kira and Naz have an instant connection and end up sharing a passionate night together after talking for hours the first time they meet. Kennedy has a way of making one encounter feel like a lifetime between these two characters obviously meant for one another. The level of connection, chemistry, and potential for more that we get between Kira and Naz in just that one night felt so real and believable. But when her brother finds out and things get a little complicated, Kira and Naz don’t speak again for 12 years…

12 years later we catch-up with them, Kira now does hair and makeup for film, television, and photo shoots and Naz plays professional basketball for the Waves (the same team as August in Long Shot). Kira gets hired to work on Lotus’s fashion show and runs into Naz there. Naz is not ready to let Kira go this time and convinces his friends to invite her on their two-week vacation on a yacht in the Mediterranean. The vacation was so fun and seeing/catching up with all the Hoops couples again was the best thing ever…Lotus & Kenan, Iris & August, Banner & Jared. Kira and Naz have a lot to work through, while their chemistry and connection has only increased, they have her brother Cliff’s continued loathing of Naz hanging over them. Her brother Cliff made a bad decision all those years ago and because of that his career opportunities crashed and burned, so he still hates/blames Naz because of everything he has accomplished that Cliff never did.

I loved everything about this read. Kennedy’s writing is always just so easy to get lost in and she’s really a masterclass storyteller. All of the cameo moments were perfection! I loved the chemistry and angst and hope for more between this couple. Seeing them get a second chance at what could have been was the best. Kira is a bisexual heroine who knows exactly what she wants and Naz was the best sort of obsessed-with-his-partner kind of hero. I loved seeing how much he takes care of Kira and just could not get enough of this couple!

Thank you to Social Butterfly PR for an e-ARC. All thoughts in this review are my own. The Close-Up has a publish date of August 16, 2022.

The story starts with Takira (h) and Naz (H) meeting their senior year of high school and having a moment connecting and intrigued with each other. Takira's slightly older brother is the star of his prep school's basketball team and Naz was second string. The book then jumps to the present day, 12 years later, and we slowly learn that their chance fell apart at the championship game because of her brother's poor choices and Naz getting a chance to step up and shine. Takira is a stylist/makeup artist and Naz is a successful basketball player and they've each kept track of the other and thought of the other one, but what happened prevents either from reaching out. They meet again at an event and their chemistry comes roaring back. Takira's hesitant because of lingering issues with her brother, but Naz won't let her slip away again. The story is written in first person, dual POV. No ow/om drama, neither are virgins (they had fooled around some the night they met, but weren't in a relationship and neither was celibate while apart; Takira is bisexual and there are a couple of short mentions of each of their sexual histories, it seemed like she slept around more than he did since he's not the typical manwhore athlete - no scenes of them with others in the book), bc is used.

I loved how focused Naz was on getting his shot again. He views it as fate and it was so perfect how much he admired Takira and how well he treated her. He creates an opportunity for them to be on a yacht with his friends for 2 weeks and they take full advantage of the vacation. Their relationship is VERY steamy, but it's also intimate and romantic. Takira has all the confidence and assuredness, plus she's bold, which is a great contrast to the natural reservedness that Naz has. Still, there's the specter of Takira's brother hanging in the background and whether they'll continue their relationship once they're back home.

Even though The Close-Up pulls in characters from a couple of prior books from Ms. Ryan, this does standalone. I've only read one of the previous books but still enjoyed the camaraderie and supportiveness with the group they spend time with and Takira's best friend who she keeps updated on the phone. Naz's friends being sweetly curious about them together and bonding with Takira was awesome. I also loved Takira's family and how close they were, even the scenes with her brother and witnessing a bit of his struggles.

These two do eventually go back to the real world and while there is some navigating that has to happen, there's no third act breakup, and there is a resolution with her brother. The epilogue does end with their HEA and a time jump a year in the future, showing them still consumed with each other and happy. There's also a bonus scene that can be downloaded. This book is a great taste of the author's writing, just like it's intended, and made me want to go back and check out her books I haven't read.

When I say I’m a sucker for second chance romances, books like this are why. There’s something deeply comforting about two people who are obviously meant to be finding their way back to one another.

I loved Takira so much in Reel so I was so excited to find out she got her own book. My only gripe about this book is I wished Takira got a full novel. I think her backstory along with her and Naz’s love story would have made an amazing book. I fully admit this opinion is rooted in me being greedy, I won’t hide that.

Naz was everything. He gave me gentle giant vibes so it was really shocking to learn people called him Kenan Jr. He was so passionate about Takira. He said he wasn’t letting her get out his grasp a second time and he meant that.

All in all, I think this was the perfect novella. You got a full love story that gave you enough to be satisfied while still kinda wishing you got more. Not because it wasn’t well written but because you weren’t ready to say goodbye to the characters.

Hoops meets Hollywood Renaissance romance this is the best way to describe the new novel of Kennedy Ryan, A crossover novella that will keep you hooked and wanting more.

The story of Takira a beautiful lady who loves everything about make-up and hair, she is now working and has a new life not really ready to meet Nazareth again and had her world all shaken up but this is what exactly happened in The Close-Up a second chance novel that will bring many memories and special moment from the past in a blink of an eye.

but life has a funny way of bringing together lost loves and missing persons now Takira and Nazareth are face to face again ready to start a new story or even re-take the old one.

New characters and old characters will show up at The Close-up making this book even more enjoyable. I really enjoy Naz and Kira's story I really felt the chemistry and their love at all times, this is another amazing new book by Kennedy Ryan.

To say these two had a bit of a complicated history is right. I liked seeing them as teens, the whole world there in front of them. As adults they were a bit more jaded, as we all become, but you could see that the feelings from the past were there.

I hated that Kira kept pulling away because of her brother, claiming that Naz would set him off. That Cliff claims Naz stole everything from him, when it was the choices that Cliff made that ruined his own life. With that being said, I get why Kira was iffy, even as I hated it. I didn't like that she was about to sacrifice her chance at happiness for her brother's bad choices.

I loved that Naz found a way to get Kira on the boat with everyone. With them just alone for 2 weeks they could explore being just the two of them and they were so good together. Both of them were fooling themselves that it would be only for 2 weeks.

I was glad when things sort of came to a head and Kira had to decide, did she keep this relationship hidden or was it her time to be happy. She made the right choice, which was the only one she could have made.

The ending to this one was great! Loved seeing Kira and Naz happy, loved also seeing Cliff in their lives.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶

Tropes: brothers rival, rivals sister, sports romance

TW/CW: 18+, drug abuse, physical violence

Representation: black diaspora romance

Favorite quote: “She glows. In a world that feels gray, she’s a burst of color, and she shines. Her smile makes a face that is already pretty gorgeous. Her skin is richly brown and luminous.”

Thoughts: if there’s one thing Kennedy is gonna do it’s tell a mother fucking story!! I’m obsessed with Takira and Nazareth!!! Let’s start with Takira I loved her in Reel so I was so excited for her to get her own book! I hate that she felt that she had to be her brothers keeper and put his happiness before hers! Also I loved that we gotta to see all the hoops girls and guys!! Also love that lotus is getting the love and life she deserves! Now on to Naz’s fine ass 🥵 this man right here just does something to my soul! He is so fine but beyond that he’s so caring and you could tell how much he loved Takira! This man has a way with his words and it’s just immaculate! Also his kink about taking care of her made this all the better! I’m obsessed with these two and their chemistry and the way they truly meshed so well together!! I will be rereading this soon cuz I miss them already!

The satisfaction I feel after reading a Kennedy Ryan novel is incomparable to anything else. I almost feel like I need a cigarette ;) (and I've quit smoking!)
Kira and Naz were wonderful characters, and I loved how they met when they were 18, but then life made it so they couldn't check if they connection could be more - if it could last. Because when they met again as adults, that connection was like a string between their hearts, their souls, their very beings.
The writing is beautiful - as were the different places Kira and Naz and some other well-known characters from the Hollywood Renaissance world - visited.

I am so obsessed with Kennedy Ryan's novels. She always pens love stories that leave a visceral mark on your heart! The Close-Up is an even better example as she combines two amazing worlds: her Hoops world and her Hollywood Renaissance world. Fans of both series will be ecstatic as Takira and Naz are nothing short of extraordinary!

I absolutely adored this love story. It was sexy, passionate and full of raw, angsty emotion! I loved how honest Takira was in what she wanted. She had a connection with Naz that spanned years that could not be denied! Likewise Naz was such an amazing guy. He fit right into the "Kennedy Ryan Hero Mold" as he was a delectable alpha but also honest and addicting. They were both just so incredible together. In addition, seeing much-loved past characters from the Hoops world was just the icing on top of an already incredible cake! Bravo! 5 stars! ~Ratula
