What do a journal, envelopes and rocks have in common? They are all tools that will help you nurture an attitude of gratitude and "The 21 Days of Gratitude Challenge" shows you how. This is such an amazing example of 1 Thessalonians 5:18, that I am truly grateful for it. In a workaholic world, we often need a physical reminder to be thankful for what we have been given. And that's what this book is. It's an inspiring message that literally walks you down the path of living a life of gratitude. If you're ready to change the way you're looking at life, then this is definitely the book for you!

"give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." ~ 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NIV)

21 Days of Gratitude Challenge
Finding Freedom from Self-Pity
And a Negative Attitude
written by Shelley Hitz

Shelley sent me her book in Kindle form not the physical book....But that’s okay.....
I enjoyed this beyond measure!!! What an awesome book to read, read again and to share with others...
In the Introduction she shares her story as to how this book was to be written.
"Thankfulness. Gratitude. Contentment."
"These are words that are familiar to us....especially those of us that call ourselves followers of Jesus. And yet, how often do we get stuck in the opposite...
Self Pity. Complaining. Discontentment.
Many people say it takes 21 days to start a new habit or break an old one...And so I decided to take a 21 Day Gratitude Challenge...What does this mean? Examples from Shelley are...Write a thank you note to 21 people and send it to them, Write in a Journal or Blog 21 things you are thankful for...such as Physical, Relational and most important Spiritual...ask GOD what HE wants you to do and do it !!! Whatever you do, I encourage you to spend time focusing on all that GOD has given you !!! "
Psalm 100:4 "Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name."

Each Day Shelley shares the wonderful blessing of Scripture…Then an idea as to what you can do to help you, such as a “Gratitude Board” and then an Application showing you how to use her ideas.
It is not a long and drawn out idea, but an encouraging straight to the point way to help you to be filled with Gratitude!
She shares times when she has slipped and how she dealt with them so they do not get a stronghold on her and out of truly being grateful.

I loved this book…..
I recommend it to those who follow Christ Jesus and those who do not….
From teenage years and up!
We all need this nowadays because so many are going through many very hard times and this will help us all…to be truly filled with an attitude of Gratitude.
There are several web sites for many resources…loved them all :O)

Shelley you are a blessing not only to me, but to our Father God. May HE continue to use you to further the Gospel of Christ Jesus and to help all of those in need of encouraging teachings of being really filled with Gratitude. In Jesus Matchless Name AMEN.

MY REVIEW OF : 21 Days of Gratitude Challenge: Finding Freedom from Self-Pity and a Negative Attitude (A Life of Gratitude)

Generally, this is a very practical book with a program geared to forcing the reader to be grateful each day. This is the second of Shelley’s book I have read and it has left me fulfilled having walked with her and with God. There is something about seeing someone ahead of you who have walked a particular path that you seem to be struggling with. The ideas are simple , well written and good enough to copy.
Personally, having gone through situations too numerous to recount in recent time, I had struggled with accepting certain facts and it led to a depressed state. By reading her books and the invitation to a journey that included having a personal journal to write note of thanks to God, sending letters of gratitude, singing worship songs and even making a gratitude board has helped me immensely to come out totally from the back drop. A journey not without struggle I must confess but worth the effort. I finally grasp the truth that indeed my thoughts hold the reins to my feelings. What I think, and what I feel as a result, affects my behavior. Now I know beyond all reasonable doubt that I can channel my feelings by choosing my thoughts! I personally have discovered that positive memories provoked lay a deep pathway to restoration from depression.
But I must say at some point I found it challenging but just obeyed the author’s suggestion even when I did not totally comprehend where it would lead me to. When she spoke about handwriting thank-you notes, one for each the 21 days! And then the idea of sending written notes to special people. It was Wow for me! It was new but fulfilling. And in turn became a blessing to my life as I see my attitude changing with the responses of many in return warming my heart again. It was truly a different experiment but I tried it and I am glad I did! And as aptly put in the title ‘Challenge’ indeed that was true but which had left me a totally different person at the end. Throughout the book, the author constantly drums the Gratitude which influences ones attitude.
Also When she wrote “I encourage you to identify one thing that you often find yourself complaining about in your life. Then, ask God for at least one thing you can be thankful for in that situation and when tempted to complain, allow gratitude to be on your lips instead.” It was painful but indeed A challenge that has liberated me beyond what I can imagine!

" . . .take simple steps of intentional gratitude . . .and watch and see what God does." Shelley Hitz, from 21 Days of Gratitude Challenge

Shelley Hitz's new book, 21 Days of Gratitude Challenge: Finding Freedom from Self-Pity and a Negative Attitude uses the idea that if people practice a habit for 21 days, they can create a new pattern of thinking and living. Hitz chose to implement this strategy in her own life after a season of loss and transitions. She quit her job as a physical therapist, sold her Ohio home, lived with debt issues for seven years, moved to Belize with her husband CJ to become missionaries and then moved to Colorado. During this time, she found herself mentally, spiritually and physically exhausted. She decided to change her outlook and used gratitude to accomplish this task.

By handwriting 21 thank-you notes, one each for 21 straight days, Hitz found herself a different person at the end of her experiment. She learned that in her positive memories lay a deep well of restorative nourishment. Here she found people who had helped her in her career, in her faith journey, in her education. She used "remembering" to take her into a bright future, one that, by looking back, she could go forward, full of the hope her gracious Savior promised.

This is a short book, big on life-changing ways to create a full expression of who we long to be and can be, if we put into practice Hitz's suggestions. Each day is a short mind-jog to get you thinking about whom you might want to thank. Accompanying these ideas is an application. Sometimes these suggestions are prompts more than they are questions to get you thinking. In particular I like Hitz's challenge on Day No. 10 - "Write out at least five spiritual blessings you have been given."

This book is a happiness booster; while it challenged me to look inward, the sole intent of this was to get me to act outwardly by getting me to think about how much I have and have been given by the people whom I have encountered over the span of my life. . . and to thank them, one at a time.

This is a wonderful book. Gift this book to you. You'll feel like a million bucks and you will change the countenance of the world as you practice these gratitude lessons.

The scripture comes to mind,“…and they overcame by the blood of the lamb the word of their testimony.” Revelation 12:11

If you are struggling in some area of life this little compilation of testimonies of gratitude is a wonderful thing to have handy. The book is divided into categories: stories of gratitude from everyday life; stories of gratitude during a personal crisis; stories of gratitude in other people’s lives; stories of gratitude during a health challenge, and stories of gratitude from the “gratitude challenge.” Regardless of where you are at emotionally, there is a gratitude story that you will relate to.

I found it to be uplifting and encouraging. It is always a comfort to know that you are not the only one who struggles—and here are stories that remind you of how to overcome! They remind you to look to Jesus who is the solution rather than focus on the problem which is upsetting/confusing/painful at the moment. I was also reminded to not compare. Someone else’s life may seem perfect, but we do not know the scope of the difficulties they have to cope with.

At the end, Shelley describes the 21 Days of Gratitude Challenge—an excellent exercise which can become a lifestyle!
An excellent little ebook—I recommend it!

This is a great devotional that really inspires you to work towards a spiritual goal. Take 21 days of your life and transform your heart into a grateful one.

Shelley Hitz is fast becoming one of my new favorite authors. I take immense pleasure in reading these books she puts together. This particular one takes you on a journey that lasts 21 days. You decide how you will spend those days, but hopefully you choose to live them with a grateful heart. This could change your life perspective. Focus on the good things you have, not the bad, irritating, or pitiful feelings. Find the glorious attitude that God wishes you to show forth from within yourself.

"The optimist says, the cup is half full. The pessimist says, the cup is half empty. The child of God says, My cup runneth over."

21 Days of Gratitude Challenge is especially wonderful if you combine your daily reading with Hitz's other book, 21 Stories of Gratitude.

Shelley Hitz was feeling downcast and discontented. She decided to start a "21 Days of Gratitude" program. Essentially this involved "forcing" herself to be grateful each day in three areas - spiritual, physical and relational - to keep a journal and to send a hand-written thank you card to a different person each day.

This book is her journal, and I was touched by Shelleys' honesty at what was sometimes a struggle. But towards the end she made a wonderful discovery: "If you take the step of faith and start thanking God in your situation - even when you don't feel thankful - it can change you and your entire day."

This is a lovely book that will benefit many.

This book was a great challenge for me. I learned to look at my circumstances in a different light. Instead of complaining or grumbling about what I want, don't want, or don't like, it showed me how to look at what I have already been given and to be thankful for it. Thanks, Shelley, for a great challenge!

This book is one that everyone should work through! Looking for things to be grateful for has not become a habit for me yet, but I know if I continue to work on this, it will become the norm. The author has some wonderful suggestions for putting your gratitude into practice. A must read, as we all, without a doubt, have things to be grateful for!

In this book, the author gives us a peek at her journal as she chronicles her 21 Days of Gratitude Challenge. Overall, the book was, well, challenging. It generally gave good encouragement and practical ideas for application. A few of the days were skimpy, but by the end of the challenge, I had a new attitude. I highly recommend the book if you need a new pair of glasses to help you look past the negative circumstances in your life and see the blessings that are right in front of you.

Extremely religious. The author admits she got the idea while reading a book in Barnes and Noble and seems to just have fleshed out the idea around the 21day habit forming process with lots of Christianity.

The Gratitude Journal: Clarify Your Priorities

Short and Sweet. Great quotes. Scripture passages that offer a Holy Nudge.
A pause to reflect: inward as to how God’s Truth impacts me and outward as to how I subsequently impact others.

The Gratitude Journal: A 21 Day Challenge to More Gratitude, Deeper Relationships, and Greater Joy (A Life of Gratitude) [Kindle Edition]
I love the way Shelley has put this little book together this wonderful little book on gratitude
Hitz gives you so many resources for keeping your own journal and they are amazing.
Starting on day one, you are give a devotional/story that goes with each days thought of gratitude, but also an application to apply it to your daily life.

There are two ways to apply this challenge.
1) is to follow Hitz's daily gratitude and journal for every entry under each day that Hitz wrote about each day and apply the application to your life.
2) you can also start your own journal using the resources applied or use your own resources, write about your own blessings and gratitude,, and use those as your devotional and application within your life.
While this book pops a very powerful punch in many examples of gratitude. It also give you so many ways to make it your own.
"Having a heart for thankfulness and gratitude are the opposite of self-pity and a complaining spirit" - Hitz writes
Instead of being thankful overall for all the big things. Like God thank you for all these blessings, get power in being thankful even when you don't feel like being grateful
One of the things that really caught my attention are these comments about  "optimism/pessimism"
1) see the cup half empty - pessimism
2) see the cup half full - optimism
3) see the cup brimming over - gratitude and believing that God will meet your needs

For a very quick,  easy way to handle a 21 day challenge, this book brings a lot of information, resources and ways of finding your cup brimming over

A quick easy read. Even though I read it in two brief sittings, I will be spending the full 21 days on the challenge, working on developing and keeping an attitude of gratitude every day.

Each day of the challenge has a personal story from the author, a quote and a scripture about gratitude, and a personal application tip. There is also a Facebook group set up to provide encouragement and accountability to anyone who chooses to take the challenge.

The basic idea is that if you practice something for 21 days, it will become an ingrained habit in your life. What better habit than constant gratitude toward God and others?

**I received this book for free from the author. A favorable review was not required and all thoughts and opinions expressed are entirely my own.**

When I started 2015, I was focused on developing more gratitude. I had this book, and chose to use it as a jumpstart to intentional pause for this focus daily. I had no idea what a great choice I'd made.

Shelley Hitz uses quotes, which I love, anecdotes, and "Application" instruction in 21 daily lessons designed to focus on gratitude in a different area of life. I found myself, a couple of times, repeating lessons, because they were areas I'd not expressed gratitude in those areas enough...and my heart had more.

This book is well designed, very easy to follow, inspirational, and excellent for what it is designed to accomplish. It's more than a five star read.

I am on the fifth day of the 21 Day Gratitude Challenge. I really needed a lift when I began this, and it has already been really good for me. I downloaded the gratitude app she mentioned, and am using it each day. I love her idea about writing hand-written notes to others letting them know you are grateful for them. I have written two personal notes so far, and plan to do one each day. I am grateful to Shelly for reminding me of how blessed I really am. There are 21 people who may have reason to smile also if I keep my note writing commitment.

Are you struggling with gratitude? Then this book is for you

This is one book I will always go back to, who would have thought to send a Thank You card, in fact 21 of them, but why stop there? What came to me was sending one to someone who I struggle with, that could very well change that situation. Shelley, whom I've never met did an excellent job in sharing some her own struggles with Gratitude, we all have those and this journal will help anyone put into practice Gratitude and Thanksgiving, doesn't scripture teach us to be doers of the Word and not just hearers?

I just started this book a few days. Today was my first day of writing down what I am grateful for and i even mailed a thank you note to let them know why I am thankful for them. I hope that this challenge will help me to see all that I have been blessed with and focus less on the things I do not have.

Inspiring

I enjoyed this little book very much, my favorite tip was to write with a dry erase marker on my mirror my daily gratitude. How very simple! I tend to complicate matters in my life. When I read the word journal I immediately got anxious thinking about how a journal should look. Turns out it looks like my mirror! No excuses, Day 1 here I come. Thank you.

The exact same Scriptures and assignments are in A Life of Gratitude so you don't need to read this little booklet if you read A Life of Gratitude... I read both and kept checking to make sure the stories were the same.
