i'm taking the final for this literally next block and I'm freaking tf out. i'd probably be better prepared if i put more effort into reading this book because it was helpful for the unts that i did read it. wish me luck!!
I hated biology. It was not easy like English or fun like math, and I did not want to put any effort into it. I avoided Bio in college by taking botany and zoology, and then physical science.
As a Homebound teacher, I have to help students with all of their subjects, and science is my weakness. To keep my teaching certificate current, I have to take 2 classes every 5 years. Generally I take something fun like Jane Austen or Poly Sci, but I know that science classes will help me the most professionally.
I will admit it, I was actually afraid to take Bio 101. It always seems impossible to wrap my head around all the stuff that is happening inside my millions of tiny cells.
Not only did I fear not being able to understand what many would regard as simple biology, I was nervous about going to class with people the age of my children (or even younger.) The last few classes I have taken have been online, but a lab science class would require showing up on a weekly basis for 3 or so hours. I was afraid the other students would dismiss me as a silly old lady (who could blame them?)
I was too cheap to pay $180 for Campbell's, so I got this book from the library and the teacher's excellent notes from Blackboard and I studied! Darn that makes a big difference! I am pleased to report that I have a 100+ average (teachers make it too easy these days!) I also really liked the class, the teacher, and the other students (especially my lab partners.)
Definitely recommended for all AP Bio students, especially for the new exam. This book delves into the knowledge you need and explains biology topics well, providing detailed but relatively easy to understand diagrams. The multiple choice practice questions help a bunch as well as the two mock exams in the back of the book. My only complaint is a lack of an index for easy reference to vocabulary. Despite only getting a 4 on the exam, I'm sure I would've done much worse without this book.
The only reason you'd need this book is if you're the type of student who will cry if you don't get a perfect score. Much like the AP Biology test itself, Barron's bogs its readers down with unnecessary, over-complicated information that only confuses its audience. It is too specific and focuses on material in a depth that isn't necessary, making it inconvenient for looking for specific explanations or simple reviews. Even better, it gives you information and then tells you it isn't something you need to know. I also don't think its practice questions accurately reflect the data- and application-based nature of the AP test, in spite of the fact that the book does acknowledge that this is how the exam is structured... All this guide did was make me more stressed and confused. You don't need this book to identify what you don't know, look it over, and take note of how surprisingly general you can be on the long-answer questions. Don't waste your money and time on what's essentially a twenty-dollar pile of kindling filled with mountains of useless terminology and over-described biochemical processes.
