Powerful, stunning, and unabashed, Barron's AP Computer Science A teaches variables and data types, expressions, assignment statements, operators, and objects in a prose unmatched since, frankly, Steinbeck. You will not put down this book once you pick it up!
Great book! I did some tutoring in AP CSA, and this book really helped give me topics to discuss. It's not very "beginner friendly" though - it's more useful once you've finished the class and are looking to review.
Weak software engineering and search/sort sections but otherwise not a bad overview. I'm not a high school student (I took AP CS in the 80s) but it seems like it does a good job of focusing on the exam.
It's a little sad that what passes for "computer science" is mostly just Java language programming. We could do a lot better if we started CS instruction earlier.
