I like millions of you put on a few extra shall we call them pandemic pounds in the last year plus and would love to be able to take them off and like many of you know from experience that diets don’t work. So when the author approached me about reviewing this new book I said of course. I found Mindful Eating very helpful because knowing why your eating is half the battle, in a nutshell mindful eating means eating with awareness, focusing on physical cues for why you’re eating. The author goes through many mindless eating problems and how to correct them and tries to prepare the reader to be a mindful eater by knowing if you’re eating to nourish your body or to fill an emotional void.
She also goes over the Catch 22 problem of eating out because it’s so easy to “supersize” our meals that are usually too large to begin with. Preparing your own meals is one solution another is eating slower (my own Waterloo). Whether you’re looking for just some good eating tips wanting to lose weight, eat healthier or deal with unhealthy eating habits you will find great information in this book.
I personally found a solution to one of my own eating problems; I am a fast eater, always have been and learned from this book that eating rapidly is unhealthy because it causes digestive problems and causes overeating. (covered in chapter 4-Benefits of Mindful Eating)
Here are the chapter in the book: The Science of Eating Unhealthy Eating Behaviors Mindful Eating Matters Benefits of Mindful Eating Principles of Mindful Eating Make Mindful Eating a Habit Coping Strategies instead of Eating Mindfulness and Eating Disorders Mindful Eating and Weight Loss The author makes it clear that she is not a health professional and that although the book is a factual amalgamation of many sources it is for educational and entertainment purposes only. She urges readers to consult with their own health professionals before engaging in any dietary changes.
Informative and has some great methods and advice as to how to approach mindful eating and how to make it a daily practice in your life.
However, for me the book was toxic in places. Particularly the beginning felt damaging in the way it referred to some foods being bad, good and/or healthier than others... Though it does correct itself in addressing the important element that food shouldn't be labelled as good or bad later in the book, it doesnt take away from the fact it also labels foods as healthy and unhealthy etc. Food should never be described in such a way as it can be triggering and damaging to many with a poor relationship with food which is infuriating as mindfulness is supposed to do just that, mend ones relationship with food. Food should be seen for its nutritional value and to serve a need, not with adjectives that don't describe something so subjective as good and bad.
Eating disorders was a topic that was seemingly addressed but sadly I think it just scrapes the surface and I think in this book, it was unnecessary for it to have a dedicated chapter.
There were also a lot of typos throughout the version I read which is disappointing for a book less than 200 pages.
I do think overall there's some great advice about mindful eating, particularly how to incorporate it into the lives of your children as well as your own but, it didn't really teach me a great deal more than what I already knew. If you're new to mindful eating, this could be a good place to start to get some basics under your belt.
Determine do you need to eat or want to eat? The idea of "Mindful eating" for me is another activity to add to my fitness journey. I was so excited to get started reading this title, just to know what was between the covers. So many of us have food issues know it while others just keep eating and not understanding why. Which is exactly why you should read this book its the support one needs to understand why you are overeating, what is a food addiction and a look at binge eating. If I shared with you there is a science to eating would you believe me or frown? Whelp there is and the author says in chapter one, understanding why you eat the way you eat is the first step.
But there is so much more as you move through the book. Seaton shares a wealth of knowledge and I can't give it all to you in this review. This book is for anyone looking to change their relationship with food and embrace healthier habits and a mindful relationship.
I was given a review copy of this title in exchange for my thoughtful and honest review
The trillions of dollars spent in the health and wellness industry worldwide is proof enough that untold millions of us are seeking better ways to improve our eating habits. Nathalie Seaton shows us the path in Mindful Eating. Most of us do the opposite of eating mindfully - we eat mindlessly. And then we feel bad when the extra pounds show up on the scale which leads to - more eating. This time stress eating. And so the cycle continues. The author shows us how the food we eat and the way we eat it sabotages our plans even when we attempt to follow one of the myriad of diets out there. She provides a step-by-step guide for eating mindfully in the real-world situations we face every day. Purchasing Mindful Eating and following the mindful eating practices contained in its pages will result in a healthier you - and a wealthier you as well as it could save you a ton of money in the long run.
I absolutely adore the idea of mindful eating and having a better relationship with food. So many of us women have dysfunctional relationships with food because of fear of weight gain or obesity. Nonfiction books like this should be firmly grounded in both the author’s experience of the topic as well as solid advice the reader can take away and incorporate into his or her life. While the book certainly had some actionable ideas toward the end, unfortunately, it mostly read like someone’s school research paper on mindful eating. I don’t think I detected any of the author’s voice or experience of mindful eating within its digital covers. If you don’t mind this impersonal approach, you may find this book more enjoyable than I did.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
This book is filled with lots of excellent information, and plenty of wonderful ideas and tips for eating mindfully. It is well organized and discusses many aspects of mindful eating in a clear and easily understood way. I learned many useful suggestions to help me on my healthier eating journey.
I especially like the fact that five bonus articles are included when you buy the book. These resources can be accessed by scanning a code with your cellphone camera or by going to a link mentioned in the book. They cover a variety of related topics, including “The 25 Healthiest Foods You Can Buy For $5 Or Less” and “Clean Eating.”
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve their eating habits in an uncomplicated way.
