Second Place 2018-2019 Rainbow Best Gay Mystery / Thriller Lance Gatsby had no idea what he was getting into when he became a fixer for the presidential campaign of charismatic Elliot Swardson, a married and closeted Republican. Navigating the dark and sexy world of politics leads Lance to rely on an enigmatic assassin who will only give the name Guy. Some of the shine wears off Elliot when Lance realizes part of his job is to keep the presidential hopeful happy, whatever it takes. But what kind of happiness could Lance find with a cold-blooded killer? Will Lance try to find a way to fit in Elliot’s shadow all the way to the White House, or will a conspiracy to rig the election and a family secret serve to humanize a mercenary? This 70k gritty romantic suspense contains a sexy love triangle, opposites attract, mild violence, and much sass.

For Immediate Release is a book about people who aren’t who they appear to be, even to themselves. Lance is a PR person who is recruited to work on a presidential campaign. Is he a “fixer” or is he as he presents himself; a public relations person. He has a background in high tech and as the book continues we find he has a background in hand to hand combat. But who is he, really? When he meets a guy who won’t give his name, he calls him Guy and Guy appears to be not only someone who can get rid of bodies but also, kill people in the first place. Then there is Gideon. People who appear to be straight turn out to be either bisexual or gay or closeted. There are many characters in this book and it isn’t easy to keep all of them straight. Lance has a father and mother, or does he? Will Elliott win the presidential election, with our without Lance? How can Lance escape his traumatized life and will he be able to take the man he loves with him? Many questions, which I won’t answer here for fear of leaving unwanted clues. An interesting political thriller with enough gay romance to keep the reader’s attention.
What did I just read? A rip current of a story that just sweeps you away!
There was not a minute while reading that I knew what was coming next. This is a tale involving men, M/M, but is this a romance? Is it a political thriller? Suspense? Satire? This story is fresh and relevant with a ripped from the headlines vibe. The plot is convoluted but not confusing, certainly attention-grabbing.
I firmly believe that reading stories by author Clancy Nacht is addictive. I often read late into the night but it isn't often because I can't wait to find out what happens next. Usually, it is because I'm so engaged with the characters. That is true of this story, Lance, Elliott, Guy, Corey, Jeff, and The Saint but the storyline is truly like a rip current, fast-moving, and it doesn't let you go. Nothing is as it seems. Everyone has secrets. The twists in this story are like a complex corn maze. You know there must be a way out but you sure don't see it coming.
A highly recommended 4.5 star story read on Kindle Unlimited.
If you watched Scandal and thought this would be better if Olivia Pope was a gay man then this is the book for you. I ain’t even mad because it’s done so well. Clancy Nacht often writes with Thursday Euclid (I’ve only read their collaborations) and they’re clearly a dream team but, with this, Nacht shows me they’ve got the writing chops to pull off a book without their hacker pal.
This is one of those reviews where you can’t say too much as nearly everything’s a spoiler. Twisty, twisty... unless you’ve seen all of Scandal. Then you can see the twists coming as the influence is strong. Did I say influence? More like homage.
One star dropped purely because, after the big reveal there was a lull as Olivance seems resigned. It was relevant, just went on a little long. It seems harsh to drop a whole star for that so maybe 4.5 stars.
Now I’m off to read one of Euclid’s books which will, no doubt, feature a plucky, twinky hacker. 😉
the book was well written and had a nice plot. all throughout the time that i was reading it, i felt that there was something familiar about it. i finally figured it out. this novel is like the retelling of the series scandal. olivia pope is lance. fitz is elliot and jake is gideon. for all the people who did not like how scandal ended, they might enjoy this ending
I had hopes for a complex, politically relevant plot and I’ll admit it took some twists and unexpected turns. Unfortunately I disliked the characters motivations and found the sexual configurations distasteful. Not exactly a romance. Ultimately, the plot became too absurd for my tastes.
