Prior to reading this book I knew what to do if buried in an avalanche (carve a hollow in front of my face and spit to make sure that I was digging the right way) and I knew how to get a tapeworm out of my stomach if I couldn’t find medicine: Fast for days, then put a spot of warm milk on your tongue, then wait. When the tapeworm crawls up to retrieve the milk pull it out.
Now I hypothetically know how to build a three-tiered water purification tripod, how to improvise snowshoes, and how to write some international ground-to-air signals with rocks, trash or wood while stranded at sea.
AWESOME! Really neat coffee table book. Way to big to take for hiking or camping... But if the civilized world goes down the whole than this would be a good reference book to have.
I love the book, however, the size makes it difficult to take with you in the wild. Another small issue is the fact that there are no colour photos, which is imperative when deciding "should I eat this mushroom?", because descriptions, although very detailed, are not always good enough. This is a great book to educate yourself in survival, but only for home or camp use. For a book that you can take with you, has colour images AND is the size of a thick cell phone, look to the SAS Survival Guide by Lofty Wiseman. I have both, and they're both amazing books. Recommended!
It is difficult to read at first with different writing styles and such. After you realize it is composed of several other works basically cut and pasted together you can bear the material much better. It is very knowledgable but barely scratches the surface on certain topics. It is a good book for beginners in outdoor survival. If you are looking for anything in depth such and tracking or plant identification you are better off getting pocket guides in those subjects.
An excellent resource that pulls knowledge from a range of publications including US Army manuals. This book has the most information crammed into it that I've ever seen - however, it is a large book (13.6 inches tall) with low-quality paper that makes it difficult to browse and read; you virtually need a pulpit to sit it on.
Everything you need to know to survive, with pictures and reading, teens love to study . . . Neat things to practice when camping. Different ways to filter water kids can set up. Ways to find where fish like to live in ponds. Wild herbs and roots and berries you can and can't eat. An amazing Everything book!
Awesome book. Not-so-awesome format. I would love to see this book in a different design. This is too unwieldy to carry around but too practical to leave at home!
+ Massive amount of information + Just about everything you might want to know about survival and living in the wilderness - It's size; it's not a book you can carry with you easily
