Is every Domme secretly a submissive too? In THE MASTER, it comes across in this manner with Donovan Cartwright pushing hard for Domme Jaime Heller to submit. Jaime is a twenty-seven year old loans officer experiencing a mid-life crisis. Realizing she's miserable, she packs up and leaves New York. She winds up in San Francisco without a job or home. Lucky for her, she easily find a room to sublet and job as a waitress in a BDSM club within days of her arrival.
Donovan is one of the owners of the BDSM club with the distinguished title of "The Master". It sounds more pretentious than it is in the book. Donovan is actually an accomplished Top who titillates and entices submissives and bottoms to tremble under his lashing and flogging. Honestly, the BDSM in this story is hot. The scenes are well done and very realistic. This is to be expected from the talented Ms. Thompson. She arouses the reader with pet play, wax, ice, whipping, flogging and spankings. She even takes our breath away with sensual asphyxiation. If she threw in a bit of fireplay and figging, I would have melted into a puddle of goo.
The issue I have with this book is how hard Donovan pressed for Jaime to submit in a D/s way. He kept at it despite her misgivings. Now, in this story, Jaime is a bit of a submissive. This is not the case for all Dommes. Since Jaime is in denial about it, forcing her to confront it made me feel ill at ease. One could argue Ms. Thompson showed how Donovan wanted Jaime's consent by compelling Jaime to ask for it. This is true. At one point Donovan does demand Jaime to willingly consent by kissing his feet. It still rubbed me wrong. My preference is for Jaime to want to submit and seek Donovan's expertise. This minor difference is inconsequential since the result is the same - Jaime savours Donovan's domination of her. For other readers, it may not be a sticking point.
While Donovan keeps saying the right words of "trust" and the three tenants, the actions did not exactly ring crisply for a D/s relationship. This is to be expected since Jaime isn't interested in D/s and she's always been more of a Top to bottoming males. It is a nice example of someone just starting to explore the D/s aspect of BDSM. The apprehension, first time subspace and tentativeness are all too familiar for me.
The romance part of this story is sweet and fast. Jaime is a strong female who can crank up the sultry heat when in Domme mode. She's a perfect match for the devilish Donovan. Donovan is a fine example of a good Dom. He's not perfect with his all too believable commitment issues. The chemistry between the two characters is smoldering hawt. To be co-Dommed by these two would be heavenly. This delicious kinky romance is recommended to BDSM readers who want a bit more intensity to their play.

I enjoyed this book..im a bigClaire Thompson fan, so I suppose I would say this was not one of my favorites from her, but still quite good, and different from some of her other works that I have read. in my book, a 3.5 star read!

I just wish they both stopped being doms to other people once they shared a d/s relationship because to me (not that I have much experience with this), when love strikes you, you shouldn't need to touch anyone else even if it is both of their jobs and they get payed. I just think that if they truly loved each other, then that should be enough. Donovan had said that just because he met the love of his life, it shouldn't mean that that should stop him from doing his job and that's just it. I feel like you shouldn't feel the need to have that job because he did meet the love of his life. I could be wrong or whatever and you can disagree with me, but everyone has their opinion and this is mine. I also don't with slave and master relationship because that means that one person is above the others and sexually speaking? That can be kinda hot, but out of bed? Not so much. For me, I'd want to be his equal outside of the bedroom. But, again, that is just my opinion. I also didn't like that he'd slapped her face. It might have been a soft slap and it might have only been once, but still. Me no likey. So, yeah. That is my opinion. You can disagree. It's all good because at the end of the day, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. This is just mine.

Learn to trust yourself before you can others.
This was a fairly strong hardcore BDSM book, but light in terms of degrading scenes. In fact I think it’s on of the most caring and safe looking after their clients from the Doms I have ever read. Taylor a female Dom has moved away from her previous life completely and met Donovan an owner and Master Dom at his own club whilst looking for a job. He takes her through her paces as he believes she is secretly a sub but not realised it yet. After 48 hours in his private home acting out his fantasies she begins to believes she might be a sub for him in private but a Dom in public. How will two hard headed Doms succeed in the real world are they able to keep their feelings private and will one of them ever recognised love never having it before. Will they get over the demons running Donovan and turn themselves into a united couple who with trust can have it all. I really loved this story and would recommend to people who aren’t really sure of this genre, as it’s one of the best I’ve read and I would read more of the series. This is that good complete with a real story running through not just sex.

Thompson has another winner with No Refusal. I thoroughly enjoyed the story of Mistress Jordan who moves across the country and meets Master Donovan. Jordan would like to work as a professional Mistress in the BDSM club her friend has recommended. She successfully auditions for the Master, but he has suspicions that she might not be quite the Domme she thinks she is and he wants a test. He believes quite sensibly that no dom(me) should do something to a sub that s/he hasn't had done to herself, so he challenges her to let him master her in a scene and then makes a bet with her that if she's aroused by the scene, he will "own" her for 48 hours or vice versa if she isn't aroused. The results are as one expects. It turns out that Jordan is a switch, submitting to Master Donovan, but still wanting to dominate others. The sparks fly as the two discover that their attraction is more than just sexual. I really liked the parts where they got to know each other outside of the scene. Characters are well drawn, the plot works well. Overall a great story.

Interesting premise (she’s a Domme, he’s a Dom), hot bdsm scenes, and a solid romance between two likable characters. Jordan is unhappy and does something about it, I gotta like that; she’s also straightforward and genuine. Donovan wears his arrogance well, but once vulnerable, becomes irresistible. Their emotions are developed with the romance around the hot scenes and in them, which is good because there are lots of them. Well done. I’d rate them mainstream bdsm, between “lite” (e.g. bondage, spanking, anal), and dark (e.g. blood play). I appreciate erotic romance not written in first person; hearing both perspectives just gives me a deeper connection to the story.

The story was just okay for me. I was a little disappointed because I didn't connect with the main characters at all. I felt it was plenty of steamy sex, but not much connection between the two. It got to a point I just started skipping over the sex scenes. The main female character, Jordan seemed whiny and not as open-minded as I would have liked. She felt as if two different people in this book that felt unsettled. As for Donovan, I wanted him to accept her being a Domme and maybe explored that more.

A well paced, enjoyable easy read with distinct and interesting characters. Jordan was an appealing mix of Domme and sub, it was great to read how she developed and grew with Donovan. The club had a great atmosphere and the scenes within were fresh and exciting. I also enjoyed Jordan and her Master's scenes, especially in the beginning. The boundary pushing ones were hot and gave me lots to think about. I'll definitely read other books by Claire Thompson.

I often have a problem with people trying to convince a Domme she is a sub, as it normally is because she is a woman. This kind of had those elements, but it still allowed her to be herself. I wasn’t a big fan of either pushing past what people were comfortable with, and while he called her out, he then turned around and did the same to her. Everything seemed lopsided, and while I felt the connection between the characters, I didn’t really feel any chemistry. Not a bad read, just not the best

I love that I can live vicariously through a fantastic author like Claire Thompson. I could really really to Jaimie and her struggle to truly know herself and found her strength and bravery amazing. Donovan was smoking' hot, no wonder Jaimie was conflicted. Great characters, great premise, great job!!

A very interesting twist on a BDSM relationship. Jordon had always identified as a dominant but when she meets Donovan something insider her called to submit. The writing is so well done, you can almost feel her rejection, confusion and eventual acceptance. I enjoyed reading about their journey. The characters are believable and easily liked. If you like you BDSM real, don’t miss this book.

Very sexy but romantic
I really love the idea of a female domme even though I've never been to a bdsm club it's a very sexy idea to think of a woman spread and getting hot wax, or something. But I appreciate the home aspect of their relationship and that she's mistress Jordan at work and sub at home.

Yes it is possible to switch between both roles. And Claire Thompson tells it best! I like that both characters grow and learn from each other. Donovan and Jordan are so well crafted I feel like I know them in real life. I can hardly wait to read the next book in this series. This is a great series of books!! Claire is great at capturing you with her writing and story lines. Can a Mistress and a Master move from both being dominate to having a relationship? Read and find out.

I loved this story. I enjoy reading about BDSM. This is more into the sadist style but it was enjoyable reading about it. I liked how Jordan was able to reach for her submissive side with Donovan but still be a dominant to the rest of the world.

I really liked this story. Jaime hates her boss, hates her job and is uninterested and bored at the BDSM club she frequents as a Domme. She feels like the hamster in it's wheel - running and running and running and going nowhere. When she gets a notice her apartment is being turned into a co-op, its the nudge she needs to pack up her meager belongings, load up the car and start driving. She gets as far away from New York as possible, ending up in San Francisco. She gets lucky with a lead on a job right away, waitressing in a popular BDSM club. Master Donovan, one of the club owners, is intrigued when he meets Jaime, feeling that she is a secret submissive. After a bet goes against her, Jaime ends up as Donovan's sex slave for 48 hours and things change for them both.
This was a relatively short story so there wasn't a lot of time to delve into the characters too deeply, but the author did a good job in the time we had with them to get to know them pretty well. It was interesting in seeing Jaime learn more about herself and, getting there, the sex was hot, hot, hot!!! You've got bondage, whipping, caning, wax play, breath play, anal play - and there was actually a story even with all of this!
