Children ages 3-8 will enjoy this modern version of a folktale. But as the follow Papa Sparrow from tree to tree asking for shelter during the Winter cold and seeing him being refused aid by the trees other than Spruce, Pine, and Juniper (evergreens) a lesson in caring for others can be learned. However, the primary focus of the book is a folktale of how trees lost their leaves when Winter arrives.

As with other Arbordale books, there are pages at the back of the book "For Creative Minds" that will facilitate more exploration into trees and provide mental stimulation. Again Arbordale takes utilization of their publications beyond picture book reading to an area of exploration and learning by providing webpages that will enhance the child's critical thinking. Because Papa Sparrow's wing has been injured, he cannot lead his family south for the winter and must remain where he is. He asks Maple, Oak, and Willow for shelter, but each tree refuses him. After all, they don't want their leaves to be damaged. But Spruce, Pine, and Juniper offer their branches as sanctuary, and King Forest rewards them by proclaiming that they will keep their leaves during the winter while the other trees will lose their leaves each year. Four activity pages support the lessons in this book, teaching readers about habitat and deciduous trees as part of the back matter as well as compassion as part of the story.

The Sparrow and the Trees is a delightful picture book. The lyrical, repeating dialogue as Papa Sparrow talks with each of the trees will be a big hit during classroom and library story times. Papa Sparrow remains polite and determined as one tree after another refuses to give him the winter shelter he so desperately needs. A gentle lesson from nature magically evolves beneath this fun story which is complemented with bright, cheerful illustrations. Four pages of useful information complete the book.

This lesser-known folktale will work with a wide variety of ages, as the story is simply told but its implications can be discussed at length, and there are also science tie-ins with birds and trees. The back matter provides detailed, well-written information about sparrows and different types of trees. The highly realistic cartoon illustrations, taken into the fantastical realm only with personified trees and other elements of nature, are a nice compliment to the tale and provide a detailed look at the featured birds and trees. The text develops a pattern of Papa Sparrow asking each tree for help. The language is a bit stilted at times, and the text takes up large portions of the pages. Still, this is a successful rendering of a folktale with enjoyable illustrations that could be shared in any elementary school classroom.

I bought The Sparrow and the Trees for my young nephews and niece, and they absolutely love it! The language is beautiful but still very kid-friendly, and the moral lesson is shared in a subtle, natural way, not at all "preachy." This book would be a perfect read-aloud for the classroom, with vibrant illustrations and a lively text. The information on the back pages is detailed and interesting--a perfect complement to a wonderful story.
