The Tarzana Hookers crochet club could come apart at the seams when thwarted ambition, shady ethics, and a puzzling murder converge.
Molly Pink and the Tarzana Hookers are busy crocheting baby blankets for charity, but before long, they're tangled up in a mystery that may be their unraveling. The Hookers are a tight-knit group, but some of the members harbor secret aspirations. Adele dreams of becoming an actress, and her acting coach has filled her head with promises of a career as a crochet show host. Elise Belmont has earned her real estate license and is itching to show her first house. But when the house's tenant turns up dead from a pink squirrel cocktail laced with cyanide, the Hookers could be in double treble.
It turns out that the dead man was Adele's acting coach, Timothy Clark. And Molly gets wound up in the case after accidentally leaving a scarf she designed at the murder scene. Detective Barry Greenberg, one of Molly's exes, quickly stitches together that the scarf is hers. Lawyer Mason Fields (another of Molly's exes) has her head swimming in legalese. For Molly, the only way out is by learning who really killed Timothy, and why.
I grew up on the south side of Chicago and in a very busy weekend, got married, graduated college and moved to Los Angeles.
Although my degree is in Fine Arts, all I ever wanted to be was a writer and I've been doing it in one form or another for as long as I can remember. My shining moments in elementary and high school always involved stories or poetry I'd written. I wrote news stories and a weekly column in my college newspaper. My first job out of college was working on the newsletter of a finance company. I worked for a public relations firm and wrote press releases and biographies. Later I wrote proposals for video projects and television shows that went through various stages of development.
I tried writing screenplays and wrote three. I sold one and another was a winner in a Writers' Digest contest.
I was lucky enough to be a stay-at-home mom and did all kinds of volunteering at my son's schools including editing and writing several newsletters.
I wrote essays and small pieces that ran in the Los Angeles Times, the Daily News and Woman's Day among others. My short romantic and mystery fiction appeared in Woman's World, and Futures magazine.
From time I was a thirteen-year-old babysitter cooking for the kids I babysat, I dreamed of writing a book about babysitting. It took a little longer than I'd expected, but BLUE SCHWARTZ AND NEFERTITI'S NECKLACE was published in 2006.
My affair with crochet began in Las Vegas. I had always had a fascination with crochet, particularly granny squares, but thought there was some magic involved with making them that was beyond me. And then everything changed that day in Vegas when I saw the kids' kit in FAO Schwartz. If the instructions were easy enough for kids, I thought they might work for me.
My first granny square was missing a corner, but when I tried again, all four corners were there. I was in awe of my own accomplishment. I had found the magic. I went granny square crazy until pretty soon I didn't need directions anymore. Then I learned there were more squares than just basic grannies and I made squares with sunflowers in the middle and other patterns. I moved beyond squares and made flowers, hearts, bookmarks and more.
I was in love with crochet and began to make scarves, purses, afghans, and shawls. I started carrying my hooks everywhere. A plane trip became a pile of granny square wash cloths, or part of a shawl. A vacation in Hawaii turned into a tote bag.
The Tarzana Hookers gather to embrace a charity project and concentrate on crocheting much needed baby blankets in a short time period. Protagonist Molly Pink, is the assistant manager at a bookstore where they meet to select yarn, chat, and nimbly make their hooks fly. One of the members, Elise, is a newly licensed realtor and eagerly shows Molly and Adele one of her husband’s listings unaware that the owner’s corpse is downstairs! One of them unknowingly leaves their scarf behind and the police find it when the body is discovered by another realtor. Detective Barry Greenberg investigates the case and cautions Molly to stop asking questions. Molly doesn’t want to see any of her friends get in trouble.
For fans of Betty Hechtman’s Crochet Mystery series, you’ll recognize familiar characters and enjoy Molly’s menagerie of pets throughout the story. The plot makes for a quick and easy read. I was surprised at who the culprit turned out to be. Crochet pattern included for your enjoyment.
I read and reviewed a digital ARC provided by NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books.
On the Hook by Betty Hechtman is twelfth tale in A Crochet Mystery series. Molly Pink and the Tarzana Hookers have decided to get back to their roots. They are crocheting baby blankets for infants that are surrendered at the police department, fire station and local hospitals. Adele Humphries loves her new husband, but she is less than thrilled with the cramped living situation since her mother-in-law moved in. Elise Belmont has recently acquired her real estate license and is anxious to show her first home, but she does not want her husband, Logan to know. They barely get to see the house when Elise hustles them out the door because Logan is on his way with clients. On the news that night, Molly sees that Logan found Timothy Clark, owner and actor, dead in the house. The next day Detective Barry Greenberg (one of Molly’s ex’s) shows up asking about a scarf found at the crime scene—oops, it seems Molly’s scarf was left behind in the hurry to exit the house. Adele is in a further tizzy because the victim was her acting coach (really). She has been taking lessons without her husband’s knowledge (she told him she was taking yoga—I am shocked he bought it). To avoid spilling Elise and Adele’s secrets, Molly must solve the case before Barry can prove the scarf is Molly’s. Molly contacts Mason Fields, attorney and another ex, for legal advice and assistance. It also gives them a chance to reconnect (sparks are flying). When not working at the store and stitching together the clues of the case, Molly has been roped into helping Rhoda’s brother-in-law, Leo. He is a widow who is clueless with women and Rhoda is tired of him moping about her house (Molly is a soft touch). Can Molly unravel the killer’s identity before Barry proves the scarf belongs to Molly?
On the Hook is not a standalone book. It is best to read A Crochet Mystery series in order to understand about Molly, her family, the Tarzana Hookers, and her relationships with the men in her life. On the Hook contains good writing and has a fast pace (which I liked). The mystery, though, took a back seat to Molly’s love life. Instead of a love triangle, we have a square (Leo, Barry, Mason and Molly). The mystery was straightforward and the solving it is a cinch. Adele is her usual over-the-top self with her outlandish outfits and crazy ideas. She is even more zany than usual with her desire to become a host of a crochet show. Adele’s little ditty will have you in stitches. I admit to having trouble getting into On the Hook. There seems to be a more zany than normal in this installment. There is quite a bit going on in On the Hook with the murder, crocheting blankets for charity, Adele and her acting ambitions, Elise keeping her real estate license hidden from her husband (it made no sense why), Molly’s mother using her house for rehearsals, Barry trying to get Molly to answer his questions about the scarf, Mason and Molly going out, Molly giving Leo lessons, Sam living with Molly, the various animals that live with Molly, the bookstore, Dinah and her situation with Commander Blaine (her husband). While it is humorous, I wanted more mystery and less Molly stonewalling Barry (which lost is humor after a while). I am giving On the Hook 3.5 out of 5 stars. While On the Hook was not my favorite book in A Crochet Mystery series, I am curious to see what happens next with Molly Pink. Do you think she will ever pick between Barry and Mason?
It has been awhile since stopped by the Tarzana Boomers for visit. The 12th books the bookers are busy crocheting baby blankets. The 12th book of the series did not disappoint and a visit to the bookers is always treat. A few of the bookers had private agendas. Adele was her usual self, causing trouble. Elise has her real estate license and showing a house while unknown to her the owner is dead in the library. Molly Pink is with them. Elise rushed the group out and unfortunately Molly's scarf is left behind. Molly finds herself in conflict with the law and she needs to solve the death to not conflict with the detectives. I HIGHLY recommend this book and series. A crochet pattern for a baby blanket and scarf are included. A recipe for mystery cake is included Disclosure: Many thanks to Crooked Lane Books for a review copy. The opinions expressed are my own.
Molly Pink is part of a crochet group known as the Tarzana Hookers. One day, a woman in the group wants to show a house and asks Molly to come along. As they walk through the house, they don’t realize that there’s a dead body on the ground floor. Afterwards, Molly’s exe, who is a part of the investigation, confronts Molly and states that her scarf was found at the murder scene. Can Molly find the true culprit before she’s arrested by her exe for a crime she didn’t commit? I liked this cozy mystery, although it was hard to get into at first. This story has a bunch of crazy characters who seem a little pretentious. I think it’s because this story takes place in Hollywood. The plot was very slow to start, with a lot of dialogue and little investigating. But, it got better towards the end where the characters started taking action. I thought it was a little far-fetched to have the characters meet in a bookstore that had a yarn shop inside. But, overall, I thought it was a nice mystery. I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley and am voluntarily reviewing it.
This was actually the first book I've read in this series but since I'd been wanting to at least read something in it, I was happy when the book was available on NetGalley to voluntary read and review it. I have to say, I like the characters a lot and definitely want to go back and catch up with their stories and history. But the author does such a good job of storytelling that new readers like me will have no issue if they decide to read this book as a stand alone.
Molly and her crochet friends got involved in another mystery when her friend Adele had wanted to go into a house that Elise was showing for a reason other than seeing the house, nothing illegal. When the house's owner turned up dead and Molly's scarf was found at the scene, the police detective, Barry, started hounding Molly. I got a kick out of her describing him as doing his Columbo act but I think she later found out he still liked her and wanted to be around her.
I always enjoy when a group of ladies get together to work on a mystery while working on their hobby. I actually did guess the killer but the reason was a complete and very cool little twist. I thought the take down was pretty exciting and kind of funny...you'll just have to read it to find out. The killer was put away and most everyone in the book had a good ending. Except that Molly now had three men interested in her. I think I better hurry up and catch up (mainly because I'm just a little OCD about enjoying books more in order) before the next book comes out.
Molly has two really nice guys interested in her. Since I've only read this one book I can't say if I'm Team Barry or Team Mason. The third is sort of a fluke which you will find out if you read the book. Dinah was an awesome friend that anyone would love to have. I thought her lady cave was really cool. She was married to a guy a little older (all these ladies are around their 40s or 50s to begin with) and made herself a little den so she and her bestie Molly could have girl talk when her hubby wanted to go to sleep early. I think once I read more about the others in the group I'll have more to say in any reviews but since Dinah was Molly's best friend and had a little more page time, she just stood out more to me.
A very enjoyable, well written and constructed mystery and thanks again to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read and review.
Elise has earned her realtors license and is ready to get started so when one of the other Hookers wants to secretly look at a place without her husbands knowledge she jumps at the chance. Elise agrees but only if the girls will keep it quiet, she doesn't want her husband to know about getting her license yet. The ladies pull Molly into going with them to view the house. When a dead body is found at the property the next day the three ladies are shocked and don't want the police to find out they had been there you see the body was there while they were viewing the house they just happen to have to leave in a rush and never saw it. Follow along as Molly and her friends look for the murder and do their best to keep themselves out of trouble. This was a fun read filled with tons of crocheting knowledge. The characters are likeable, funny, and easy to get to know.
Come along with Molly Pink and meet the “Tarzana Hookers”. Molly is a forty- something widow. She is assistant manager of the Shedd & Royal Books in Southern California. The bookstore is the meeting place for the Hookers who are all woman of a certain age that enjoy the art of hooking better known as crocheting. The group use to make items for needy group. They have decided to make blankets for babies left in fire stations, police stations, outside hospital emergency rooms. Several of the ladies have taken up activities that will lead the group and readers on an adventure. One is taken acting lessons under an assumed name and one got her real estate license and wants to prove she is very capable o selling houses. After a meeting, several of the group go to one of the houses on the market. While there she receives a text from her husband, the real estate agent for the home that he is on the way to show the property. Everyone is rushed out. No one notices that Molly’s scarf was inadvertently dropped out front. Then the body of Timothy Clark is discovered dead. Plus the Detective Barry Greenberg on the case discovers and recognizes the dropped scarf. The investigation begins........ Meanwhile Molly is giving dating lessons to the widower staying with one of the Hookers. Her mother and son are using her house for rehearsals for their upcoming show. Then Molly gets involved with her lawyer friend. A busy, busy book with a cast of quirky, colorful, vivid, entertaining and interesting characters. A good read. Although this is book # 12 in the Crochet Mysteries series, I had no problem following along with all the characters and their antics.
On the Hook is the twelfth book in Betty Hechtman’s A Crochet Mystery series. This is the first book I’ve read in the series. The author provided sufficient background information that I didn’t feel lost jumping in so late in this series. The steadily paced mystery is well plotted and there are enough twists and turns, and suspects to keep the reader engaged and guessing.
Molly Pink is the assistant manager of Shedd & Royal Bookstore and More, and is in charge of the yarn department. She’s also a member of the Tarzan’s Hookers, who normally busied themselves crocheting items for charities. Lately, the group has been working on personal projects, but CeeCee Collins wants the group to crochet baby blankets to leave at police stations, fire stations, and hospitals for surrendered newborns and the group agrees. Adele Abrams Humphries dreams of becoming an actress, but is hiding that fact from her new husband. Elise Belmont, who recently earned her real estate license, shows a house listed by her husband, Logan, to Adele, who isn’t supposed to be in the market for a new house, and Molly, but Elise doesn’t want her husband to know and swears them to secrecy. Elise receives a text from Logan and she rushes her friends out of the house. While Logan is showing the house to prospective buyers, he discovers the body of Timothy Clark. Timothy ran a workshop for acting hopefuls and Adele, using a different name, is one of his clients. Detective Barry Greenberg, one of Molly’s former boyfriends, questions her about the ownership of a crocheted scarf found at the scene. Molly refuses to answer his questions and asks Mason Fields, a lawyer and another former boyfriend to represent her. Molly convinces Elise to let her tell Dinah Lyons, her best friend who plays Dr. Watson to her Sherlock Holmes, about the showing and her scarf.
I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it.
This series is probably best read in order. This is the first book I read in the series, and I had a little bit of trouble keeping characters and their relationships straight. The mystery was interesting with nice pacing. My only issue was the ending. It just felt like it came out of nowhere.
Molly Pink is a great protagonist and her ability to find herself in tricky situations always leaves me laughing.
There is a lot going on in this story that keeps it interesting from start to finish.
As we all know, Adele has a flair for the dramatics and she does not disappoint us in On the Hook bt Betty Hechtman. Molly also has a new friend, Leo, who just might be some competition for Barry and Mason.
I really enjoyed this book and there was enough going on that I didn't realize I was at the tail end!
Ms. Hechtman is a talented writer and as a crocheter, I am always interested in what the Tarzana Hookers are up to.
I volunteered to read and review an ARC of this book provided by the publisher and NetGalley.
Molly Pink is assistant manager at Shedd & Royal Books & More. She's also their event coordinator, and a member of the Tarzana Hookers, a group of women who crochet together, usually making gifts for charity. Her friend Elise Belmont confides that she has secretly gotten her real estate license -- because her husband Logan didn't want her to, thinking it might ruin his reputation as a realtor -- and wants to sell a house so she can show him that she's just as good as he is. Conveniently, another friend (and both members of the hookers) Adele wants a home where she and her new husband can have some privacy away from his mother, because the three live in a condo together.
So Elise has a house she wants to show Adele, and Adele insists that Molly come along. The three head out to an exclusive neighborhood, and shortly after arriving, Elise hustles them out because she received a text from her husband stating that he was going to show homes, and she's afraid that this will be the first one on the list. However, in the rush, Molly's custom-made scarf (by her) is left behind. And when Logan discovers the dead body of the owner, Timothy Clark, in the downstairs, it now becomes a crime scene.
When Detective Barry Greenberg -- Molly's ex -- realizes the scarf is hers, he tries to get her to admit it, but she won't, because she's promised Elise that she won't mention the visit to anyone. Now she's stuck in the middle of another murder investigation, tap dancing around Barry, and asking another ex, criminal attorney Mason Fields, for help. Then Molly starts receiving threatening notes, and she knows someone is watching her. But are they real or just someone trying to get her to stop asking questions? Unless Molly's careful, she might find that she's the next one in line to die...
This is the tenth book in the series, and I have read each one of them. While some have been better than most, I did find that I enjoyed this one quite a bit. Yes, it was definitely filled with Molly still trying to figure out if she wants a relationship or not, but having read them all, I understand her reasonings. If others haven't, I understand their confusion. While I absolutely hate love triangles, at least this wasn't exactly filled with that.
What I didn't like about the book is Molly's family just deciding to come over whenever they wanted and turn her house into a rehearsal hall. She has enough problems at her home as it is. Also, she should have gotten Barry's key when they broke up, and the worst is Adele - who somehow has gotten more annoying as the books go on. Enough with the over-the-top crochet outfits. Even I, a woman who loves to crochet, wouldn't even think of wearing it as everyday wear. You actually would look ridiculous. Also, why was Elise's husband calling her to tell her that he was showing a home? Did he do this on a regular basis? Check in with her every time he had a client? It seemed odd...
At any rate, other than this, the book was interesting enough to keep me reading, and there were some fun scenes throughout. But it seemed that some characters were bashing marriage, and I didn't understand that at all. Marriage is compromise and respect for the other person, and you have to learn how to give and take. If you don't do that, nothing about it will work at all. Hopefully, her characters will learn how to do this.
As you can tell, this wasn't one of my favorites of the series but it is still very good. However, as others have stated, the ending was odder than other books, with Molly telling us the fate of the people in the acting classes that Timothy gave (as if we really care about it) and the murderer came out of left field. I prefer that we at least get a few clues here and there. All in all, a nice cozy if you want to relax, but nothing too involved. There are also crochet patterns in the back for those who are interested.
I received a copy from the publisher and NetGalley but this in no way influenced my review.
This is book 12 in the Crochet Mystery series. The Tarzana Hookers are crocheting baby blankets for charity when Molly and the rest of the hookers get involved in a murder investigation involving one of their own. This is a light and fun cozy read with all the hookers back and ready to wrap up their next project. Adele has hired an acting coach to get back into the business and when he ends up dead she is the prime suspect. Can be read as a stand alone but there are lots of references to events in previous books. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
most challenging, mystery to date. Molly was roped into viewing a home for sale with Elise, one of the Hookers and a new Realtor, with Adele. It turns into a trail of secrets that almost puts handcuffs on Molly. She contacts ex-boyfriend Mason, well-known criminal attorney, to keep her out of jail. Elise’s husband Logan is the listing Realtor, and he doesn’t know she has a license. Adele wants a home for new hubby Eric “Cutchykins” Humphries, a motor cop, and Mother Humphries, as their only private time is when his mother goes to the movies one night a week. The three ladies were barely in the home when Elise heard that Logan was taking clients out to view homes. She panicked and drove everyone out. Nobody noticed that one of Molly’s signature scarves was left behind… Barry, her ex-boyfriend who is the detective on the case, recognized the scarf at a glance. The owner of the home had been found dead by Realtor Logan, when showing it to his clients. The cause of death is poisoning, and the man was Timothy Clark, a huge TV personality. Elise wants Molly to find who did the deed so her husband doesn’t find out she showed the home. Adele doesn’t want Cutchykins to know they were looking at the house, either. She doesn’t want hubby to know she was in an acting workshop of Clark’s, in which he promised to get her an interview as a “personality”, a cable TV crochet star. Logan is hiding the actual ownership of the Clark home from Elise. Molly is my favorite, showing us the single life (in her case widowed) in this new millennium. She has taken one of her talents and introduced it into where she works, the Shedd &Royal Books and More. This sounds like the kind of place I would enjoy working, especially with the yarn department and Happy Hour crochet events. Adele is becoming a favorite, even though she is the epitome of every uniquely annoying person one has ever met. Adele adds much to the series, even if at times only comic relief. The Hookers are not just a group that crochets or (perish the thought) knits, they are like a close-knit family after years of charitable yarn projects and adventures. And life around Molly is often an adventure, especially when trying to keep her from being ON THE HOOK! This fast-paced, action-packed cozy mystery is just what the doctor ordered, with laughter often being the best medicine. The plot twists serve to heighten the suspense, introduce more possible suspects, and bring two of Molly’s ex-boyfriends back in her life. We are reminded that the world of show business is often cutthroat. Promises are worthless, especially from Timothy Clark, so the killer could be any one of his workshop students. Enough suspects to keep this armchair sleuth confused! One small consolation is that I had suspected – briefly – the real killer, but didn’t have a motive. Overall, it is a challenging mystery with the fabulous characters who are as fresh today as from the beginning – I highly recommend it! From a Grateful Heart: I received this e-arc from NetGalley and the publisher, and this is my honest review.
“On the Hook” earns 4/5 Incriminating Scarves…Delightfully Fun!
I've eagerly entered the world of crocheting and cozy murder with Betty Hechtman’s “On the Hook,” the twelfth book in her Crochet Mystery series. Hechtman has penned a marvelous adventure, and although this far into the series I knew much would have transpired, I didn't feel at a disadvantage. There were plenty of “need to know” background and character connections to keep me thoroughly engaged. First, I enjoy a variety of themes weaving through my cozies especially when related to the lead character owning a food or hobby linked shop. Crocheting has always intrigued me and reminded me of watching my grandmother making dollies, scarves, and baby clothes. Next, I am always personally engaged in a series that incorporates multi-generational characters in the mystery and investigation. We have Molly Pink, a forty-something widow, who is the assistant/events manager of the bookstore/meeting place for The Tarzana Hookers, and The Hookers? Yes, a plethora of ‘women of a certain age’ that love ‘hooking.’ Fourth, the first-person narrative included excellent descriptions that I found informative, but she doesn't rely on the narrative alone, as she has entertaining banter between characters that illustrate well tone and personality. Last, I continue my involvement in a series when the writing is enjoyable, the mystery clever, the characters are realistic (quirky is ok), and I am intrigued enough to go beyond the story. I never thought crocheting would be for me, but after reading this book I am intrigued. All boxes checked! An added treat is the crochet patterns included for CeeCee’s Baby Blanket and Molly’s Incriminating Scarf. Absolute fun!
"Disclosure: I received a NetGalley ARC. My review is voluntary with honest insights and comments."
On the Hook is the 12th book in the Crochet Mystery series. Molly Pink gets coerced into going to a house viewing with Elise and Adele. After being at the house for less than 5 minutes, a nervous Elise ushers the pair out because her husband (who is unaware that she has gotten her real estate license) is coming to show the same house. Unfortunately for Molly, she accidentally drops her scarf in their rush to leave, and when Elise's husband finds the owner's dead body in the basement, it becomes evidence. Timothy Clark, the dead owner of the house, is also Adele's acting coach. The discovery of the scarf brings detective (and former boyfriend) Barry to Molly's door, and forces her to reacquaint herself with other ex-boyfriend, attorney Mason.
The story is extremely fast-paced, more so than any other of the Crochet Mysteries that I'd read, and I found my way through the entire book one boring Sunday. While I continuously wonder why Molly insists upon stone-walling Barry, my only real issue is that with the exception of the killer, damn near everyone ends up happy. That was a little too much in my opinion. Overall, a good story and mystery though.
Molly just can’t seem to stay out of trouble. One of her friends just became a real estate agent, and is showing Adele a house, and Molly tags along. It turns out the house had a surprise: the murdered owner. A lost scarf ties Molly to the house. Her life is furthered complicated by a score of other things. One of her sons thinks she should sell her home, the other one still lives with her, and her mom’s singing group is rehearsing at Molly’s. But the biggest problem is that Adele is trying to become “a personality” and has paid money to attend workshops toward that goal. However, Molly thinks she is being taken advantage of. And Molly has broken ties with both Barry and Mason, but still wonders if she did the right thing. And due to strange circumstances, she still has reasons she has to see both of them. The mystery in this tale uptakes a backseat to all the drama that is going on, but that’s not a bad thing.
Molly and he Hookers are at it again in this delightful story involving a dead actor who ran workshops for acting hopefuls. Molly and two of the Hookers stumble upon a murder scene they didn’t even know was there. Molly puts on her amateur sleuths hat and tries to discover whodunnit before the police do and before she might become the accused.
The book is full of twists and turns not only in the amateur sleuthing business but also in Molky’s personal life. A surprise awaits as the killer is revealed.
I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. It is a fun and easy fast read. A wonderful cozy mystery!
Adele wants to be an actress in this installment of Betty Hechtman's Crochet Mystery series. Fellow Tarzana Hooker Elise wants to be a real estate agent. Molly, of course, wants to play detective.
Adele's acting coach ends up dead in a house that would-be real estate agent Elise tries to show them, so that gives Molly the chance to play detective.
Everybody gets what they want.
The identity of the killer seemed too obvious, which worried me that I was wrong. I was.
Whodunit either came out of left field or was glaringly obvious. On television shows, I always figure the guest star with the most familiar resume is the killer. That generally works.
Hechtman has become very repetitive with her descriptions of our core characters, to the point that she's repeating the descriptions at least a couple of times within the same book. Seems like she's getting tired of her characters.
I, for one, am tired of the Molly-Barry-Mason triangle. Lose Mason, already. We want us some Barry.
Thank you to NetGalley.com for the opportunity to read an Advanced Reader Copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
You miss one or two books in a series and everything you knew before seems to be all screwy…. Seriously I missed 3 marriages, 2 breakups, some additional pets and the return of the singing seniors? Remind me not to let that happen again – I may not recogninze anything..oh wait – if Adele and her crazy crocheted clothes are there I’ll know where I am.
What I loved: I was Team Mason - all the way so of course I love all of the things that happened over the course of this story. It was also wonderful to see the Hookers together creating something beautiful for the community.
What I didn’t love: See above – Team Mason here; not Team Barry so I’m scowling at how the book ended.. and annoyed that Molly didn’t get to eat this amazing sounding vanilla ice cream – 5 types of vanilla bean AND marscapone cheese? Scoop me up some – and make it a triple.
What I learned: Why isn’t there a crafting channel? I just want a show on to show me how to complete a French knot.
3.5 Molly Pink and the Tarzana Hookers are busy crocheting baby blankets for charity, but before long, they’re tangled up in a mystery that may be their unraveling. The Hookers are a tight-knit group, but some of the members harbor secret aspirations. Adele dreams of becoming an actress, and her acting coach has filled her head with promises of a career as a crochet show host. Elise Belmont has earned her real estate license and is itching to show her first house. But when the house’s tenant turns up dead from a pink squirrel cocktail laced with cyanide, the Hookers could be in double trouble. It turns out that the dead man was Adele’s acting coach, Timothy Clark. And Molly gets wound up in the case after accidentally leaving a scarf she designed at the murder scene. [amazon synopsis]
Det. Barry knows the scarf dropped at the scene of the crime is Molly's tho she will not admit this. Mason, her lawyer, is advising her. Both men are exes. Molly will need to solve this on her own. As usual, Adele is meddling in everything. She is most annoying as is her nickname for her new husband. Good mystery.
Molly’s friend Dinah is adjusting to married life again, along with Adele, who not only has a new hubby to consider, but his mother who lives with them. Meanwhile, Molly’s over-full romance card is suddenly empty, after she broke things off with Mason and Barry has kept to himself. But the best laid plans go awry when Molly, Adele and Elise get caught up in a murder investigation, after the man selling the house is found dead by a realtor (who happens to be Elise’s husband) while he was showing the house - not knowing Elise had gotten her license too, and had been showing it to Adele. Barry finds a scarf left behind, which he remembers is one of Molly’s - and the games begin, as he tries to get her to tell him why her scarf was there, and she tries to avoid spilling the secrets her friends want to keep. Enter Mason, who can’t resist the way Molly still shakes up his world, and things begin to get interesting.
There are very few series that can survive through 12 books but Betty Hechtman's Crochet Mystery series just keeps getting better. Molly Pink is assistant manager of a book store and active member of the Tarzana Hookers, a crocheting group. When Molly goes along with two other hookers to look at a house for sale she ends up leaving behind her distinctive scarf when they had to make a fast exit. Unfortunately, it turns out a dead body is later found in the basement and Molly's ex-boyfriend, Detective Barry Greenberg, knows the scarf belongs to Molly. Now, Molly needs to circumvent Barry's questions long enough to figure out the murderer before a number of secrets get revealed.
This is a well written book with very relatable characters and the teaser at the end has me anxious for book number 13. Thanks to Crooked Lane Books and NetGalley for an advance copy. The opinions are my own.
Molly Pink and two of her fellow crocheters visit a house that's for sale. But they each have a reason for not wanting it known that they visited, so when they learn that some one else is about to arrive, they leave hurriedly, so much so that Molly leaves behind her distinctive scarf. What they don't know is that the dead body of the owner is on the lower level, so Molly's scarf becomes, the police think, a valuable clue. Molly decides that she must find the real murderer before the police learn that the three women were there. I didn't find the whole premise that plausible, but a lot of the book is about the three men in Molly's life, as she reconciles with lawyer Mason, realizes she still has feelings for policeman Barry, and confronts new problems with a man who likes her a whole lot more than she likes him.
I've been reading this series from the beginning, and each book just keeps getting better. Molly and her gang once again get into trouble and need to solve the mystery before one of them get arrested. This is one of my favorite books in the series, because I really was guessing up to the end on who the murderer was. What I continue to love about the series is that the characters are so relatable. They're everyday people. Molly is my favorite. She is a strong independent woman. That's always great to see in a book. Plus how can you go wrong with all the crocheting weaved in throughout the book in between the mystery!
This is not the first in the series that I have read. I have not read them all or in order. I found this to be a standalone story that can be enhanced by reading them in order but just as delightful reading it by itself.
This is a well written book with lots going on. I found myself at the end in no time. The characters are well crafted, the plot tight, and plenty of suspects.
Molly must clear her name as her scarf was found at the scene of the crime and she becomes suspect number one.
I enjoy the wit, the story line and the characters. They keep me coming back for more.
I received an Advanced Reader’s Copy from Netgalley and these are my own opinions.
I really like the concept and the handling of the investigation is done well, but the series has reached the "just be single" level of relationship drama. Also the main characters have kinda lost their minds.
-1 star for English professor refusing typed paper submissions in 2022 and then not accepting a paper because the handwriting isn't neat enough and for "why can't my boyfriend get along with the guy I just kissed in front of him?" -1 star for culprit giving crucial clue on how the murder happened because that would totally clear her of all suspicions... even though she has a trademark hat she wears everywhere and could easily be traced back to her.
I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley for free in exchange for an honest review. Molly Pink and her crochet group are back in the 12th volume of the crochet mysteries. In On the Hook, Molly has to solve the murder of a has-been tv star before she and her friends, Elise and Adele, are implicated in his murder. Because this is the 12th book in the series, the characters are well developed and have established relationships. I was able to thoroughly enjoy the story even though I haven't read the previous volumes. On the Hook is a well-written cozy mystery.
A delightful bit of escapism. Fun cozy mystery. I have read some of the previous ones in this enjoyable series. Sometimes when a character has two men in her life from which to choose it becomes irritating. This time there are three men giving her trouble or romance or whatever. Kept things interesting and entertaining. The ending or culprit was a bit of a surprise. Clues were well hidden, but there. The publisher provided a copy via NetGalley.
Molly Pink and the crochet group at the bookstore where she works are know as the Tarzana Hookers and like the name of the group, I find them to be over-the-top. The murder mystery itself, the clues, and the resolution - I can buy into all that but the people and their relationships are something I cannot envision as occurring in real life. Still the books in the series are good for a quick, light read.
