What Happens in Vegas #7

Tempted by Mr. Write: What Happens in Vegas, Book 7

Rate this book
She thought she knew everything about romance. She was wrong.

After losing out on a plum assignment, a romance book conference is the last place journalist Sheridan Farlow wants to be. Love is a myth—like flattering changing room mirrors—and she has the past relationships to prove it. Her editor wants a story? Fine. She'll write an entire expose . . . only it doesn't go quite according to plan.

Bernard "Mac" Mackenzie is something of an anomaly in the romance-writing world—a man who writes romance and believes in it. And until he met Sheridan, Mac's never felt anything close to the love he writes about. He needs more of her. In his arms, and in his bed.

Their attraction is explosive, even as Sheridan's cynical side battles her growing feelings for Mac. But can she handle writing a biting expose with an exposed heart on the line?

Contains mature themes.

Sara Hantz was born in Northampton, England, the eldest of four children (she has three younger brothers). School and Sara weren’t a match made in heaven. She was bored a lot of the time, and it seemed much more fun to dream up ways of disrupting lessons than to actually pay attention. Which could explain why she was always in trouble! But she redeemed herself later, when at twenty-one she went back to full-time study.
She wasn’t one of those people who wrote as a small child. She did read, though, avidly. And it took her a few years of thinking about writing before she actually started. But now, she wouldn’t do anything else, and she never gets bored!
In 2001, she moved to New Zealand (an incredibly beautiful country) with her husband and two children. After working at a university for three years, she left to work in their hotel and devote more time to her writing. She wishes she’d done it sooner!
In her spare time, she loves going to the movies, watching TV, and walking. She loves to hear from readers. Visit www.sarahantz.com.

“I know. It’s crazy. But it’s happened. Love at first sight.”

This was a quick adult romance featuring a journalist and a male romance writer.

I felt quite bad for Sheridan in this story as it seemed unfair the way the assignment that she wanted was taken from her, and she was then forced to go to Vegas and do a story that she didn’t want to do.

This story was pretty short, and the romance was pretty quick because of it, which some people might not appreciate. We did get a bit of tension, and a sex scene which was pretty tame, but there was no love triangle or cheating so yay! The ending was also of the Happily Ever After variety.

"But...it all happened so fast!"
Accompanied by the exclamation of a bewildered, "Huh?"
A check of my kindle and a rather confused stare-down with the clock on my computer,to convince myself that I had indeed read the entire novella in less than 30 minuets.
Coupled with a memory check to confirm that:

A. Leading lady, Sheridan and leading man, Mac had met, exchanged pleasantries, had dinner, had sex, had a crisis of sorts, resolved said crisis, fallen in love, and gone traipsing off into the sunset.
B. Everything happened in Vegas.
C. There was absolutely no drunk marriage, texting, sexing, dialing, sexting,or any other shenanigans of any sort to explain, or justify any of it.
D. There just needed to be more.

This is the type of story that sends reviewers everywhere into fits, making us want to throw ourselves out of the nearest collective window.
There is so much here to love; it's just not enough to justify falling in love, or even lust yet.
The premise of "ambitious news hound meets sexy male romance novelist" is more than enough to pique reader interest, and serve as the perfect road to "happily..."
What said premise is not however, is a license to race down said road at lightening speed. Leaving all the sights, sounds, and creativity that audiences crave, as little more than impressionistic nuance in the rear view.

The story that we have here would be great as-is if the sex had been HOTTER!
This story is one that needs to simmer and build in character and sweetness over pages filled with heart-stopping romance, and a once in a lifetime merging of souls.
These are things that just don't have the time to happen over the course of a few stolen moments in Vegas.

I feel like this book was more of a novella to a series and I'm missing out on three more books. It was so quick!

I couldn't stand this read from the very beginning. I was hoping for a lot more than a clichéd, Vegas romance with a touch of love at first sight thrown in. Most of the time, I'm all for a cheesy romance with a hunky guy and beautiful-but-doesn't-know-it girl who are thrown together and fall in love, but you know they're going to end up together. That's the thing - you know it's going to happen so that's not why you read the book. It's about how it happens - all the drama, maybe humour and tragedy in between. It's the journey, the character development and the emotions involved. It doesn't matter how clichéd it is, you can still make an incredible story that just happens to have a cliché thrown in.

To be honest, I normally talk about the characters in reviews, just because I really feel they make or break a book. But I can't even tell if I liked this set of characters or not. They were drowned out by the plot which was extremely frustrating. How could I like characters who throw themselves into situations like that? There was no depth to them because all the focus was on this romance that was in no way believable or relatable.

Harsh, I know. Part of me thinks reading so many books has made me really sensitive to reads like this. Plenty of people would enjoy this book for the author's ability to get straight to the point - it's a quick afternoon, feel good read. It just wasn't for me.

My Review:
Wow...um...I'm kind of at a loss for what to say about this book. I really did not like it. The thing is, I rarely review books that I don't like because I simply don't finish them. This one wasn't even long enough for me to get to the point of dnf'ing it. It's really super short. As a result, the events fly by at supersonic speed. Literally the book takes place over basically 48 hours and the main characters are well on their way to insta-love within just a few hours. Way too fast, way too underdeveloped.

The thing is, I could probably get over that if there weren't other issues. The premise is great...a male romance writer who meets a jaded, cynical reporter at a convention. But, but, but...does this author (Sara Hantz) even like romance novels herself? I don't think so, because the way things play out with Mac's choices...it just didn't sit right with me. This could have been good, but the author in the story (Mac) takes actions at the end that just made me question everything about this book. In fact, both characters at the end had me going, "huh? really?" 48 hours and both characters completely uprooted their lives. That's just too far-fetched for me.

So, yeah, I don't think I can recommend this one. The premise had promise, but it just fell flat.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

*3.5 stars* Tough one to review! The good side - fun story with great writing and characters. The storyline was fun too! A journalist with an attitude sent to a romance writers convention, the last place she wants to meet. When she meets Mac MacKenzie and discovers he's the romance writer BA MacKenzie, she's certain she has her story!!

The bad side - it is super short! And because the characters and story are so good, it just left you wanting....more!!

All in all it's a quick light fun read and I would recommend it.

Tempted by Mr. Write was such interesting and refreshing story that completely hooked me in from the very beginning.

Sheridan Farlow is a journalist whose assignment of covering the President's appearance has been given to someone else, and that left her with covering a romance book conference instead. She is not happy covering some romance convention that she has absolutely no interest in, but she goes to Las Vegas anyway. Upon arriving she starts to remember why she doesn't believe in love in the first place, but soon after crashing into a handsome stranger who also happens to be a romance writer, she begins to see things differently. Sheridan knows that she should be working on the piece for her editor, yet the more time she spent with Bernard the more she started to realize just how wrong she was about romance and how her future could be different with it. Soon things start to turn for the worse when trusting issues start to take a hold of their situation and she has to decide whether being with Bernard is worth it or not.

Bernard “Mac” Mackenzie has a gift for writing romance novels, and he likes it. He can connect with his readers and he actually believes in it. Yet he wants to write something different, but he is afraid of what that could do to his career. Attending the romance convention should have been just like any other that he has previously attended, but after stumbling upon Sheridan he immediately feelings a connection towards him and he vows to get to know her better even if it means convincing her that love truly exists. As the attraction grows between them so does second thoughts, and the both need to overcome their pasts in order to be together.

Like I mentioned before the story itself was refreshing to read and the characters were likeable. Yet, the story felt like a novella to me and there wasn't a whole lot of development, it felt a bit rushed to me. Needless to say I absolutely loved Mac, he is kind, handsome and he happens to be a bestselling romance writer. On the other hand, Sheridan doesn't back down and she speaks her mind (which I also like). Overall, it was a cute romantic read that will definitely leave you wanting for more. I would recommend it if you are looking for a quick read (since I did say it felt more like a novella than a full length novel). : )

Tempted by Mr. Wright is part of the What Happened in Vegas series. It is a novella; approx 119 pages. I loved the storyline. Journalist is forced to attend a romance convention after losing a plum assignment. She meets a male romance writer. I expected a little more romance and less sex from a male romance writer on the first date. I thought the scenes with the women fans was realistic from what I have seen at romance conventions. I was in love with her green masquerade dress and wish it had been on the cover. This is where authors should use social media and share the dress. There is only one sex scene but it is the day they met.

Tempted by Mr. Write is a pick me up and not set me down read. Once started it is difficult to walk away from. The characters are magnetic, the story concept is cute and the writing is well done. I have a number of books from the series: A What Happens in Vegas story. Look forward to every read from it. My main issue with this story is that it ended too quickly for me. That was the only reason it was not a five star read for me. I received an ARC of Tempted by Mr. Write in exchange for an honest review.

This story begins with Sheridan, a newspaper reporter for her fathers media company, furious that she has been pulled off of an assignment to cover the presidents visit and instead being assigned to cover a romance convention in Las Vegas. When she realizes fighting the decision will get her nowhere, Sheridan decides to make the most of the assignment and enjoy her time in Vegas.

On her first day there, Sheridan meets a handsome, sexy and funny man before one of the panels at the convention. The last thing she expects is for this man to turn out to be one of the featured authors at the convention.

After spending time with and getting to know Mac, Sheridan has to decide between writing what her heart tells her to write and the expose about male authors her boss wants her to right. Either way she chooses will have consequences that will change her life.

After reading the synopsis, I thought this book had the potential to be a fun read. While it was fun, it was so short that I was left wanting a lot more. Everything happens so quickly there is no time spent getting to know the characters or what makes them who they are before they are in love and having sex. The drama that there is in the story happens and is resolved so quickly if you blink, you will miss it. I liked the characters and the story as a whole, I just would have loved for it to be double the length it is and given the readers more of Sheridan and Mac.

My thoughts:

POV switches between Sheridan and Mac
Quick hook or slow starter? 5 (I was hooked from the first chapter)
Character development: 2.5
Level of Romance between characters: 3.5
Passion/Heat level: 3.5 (this is a case of insta-lust followed by insta-love. Not a lot of time spent building up the passion)
Angst/Heartbreak: 2 (there is one misunderstanding that is resolved almost in the next paragraph)
Cliffhanger?: No, there is the assumption of a HEA.

Overall, it was just ok. I really wanted more for these characters so I was left feeling disappointed.

Sheridan Farlow, a journalist,  is expecting to be assigned to cover a presidential visit to her city. Instead she learns at the last minute that her editor is sending her to cover a romance convention. In Vegas,  of course. Sheridan is furious but nothing will change her editor's mind. Grudgingly,  she heads to Las Vegas and is expecting the worst. On the first morning,  Sheridan decides to attend a Q & A with author B.A MacKenzie. She's shocked to learn that B.A is a male writer. She is even more shocked to discover that when she talks to Mac as he prefers to be called,  that there is some serious chemistry between the two. Mac wants Sheridan badly and the two embark on a whirlwind affair. Can their relationship survive Vegas?

This was a really fun read. All of the characters,  including the supporting ones, were well developed. I enjoyed the plot of Mac being a male writer and the glimpses of the convention were great as well. I loved watching the super cynical Sheridan fall hard and fast for Mac.

This was a super quick read though. The story grabbed me from the first paragraph and sucked me in. Before I realized it I was on the last page. Most novellas I can handle being short and to the point but I really wanted more about this couple.

Tempted by Mr Write is a quirky,  fun, and fast read. From the moment Sheridan does battle with her editor to the ending,  readers will be engrossed in this short story. Anyone who enjoys contemporary romance will love this novella.

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

It's funny because I was just getting comfortable with the book when, all of a sudden, it's already the end. It wasn't that I was expecting it to be longer because I already knew from the page number on my Kindle reader that this would be a short read. It's just that things were just getting to the good part when it just ended. The ending was good, but the build wasn't as spectacular as I would have liked.

So, for a change from the more common plot where the romance author is a woman and the cynic is a man, this book has a male romance author and a cynical lady journalist who was sent to Vegas to cover a romance convention. I guess it's because of the length of the book, but I felt like there wasn't time to connect with the characters. They were described well, but it was a bit difficult to relate to them because the scenes went like: 1. heroine gets assigned to the conference when she wanted to cover another socially relevant event. 2. heroine meets hero and learns that he is a romance writer. 3. hero and heroine go out for coffee because sparks flew when they met 4. they have sex 5. heroine gets pressure from work and confides to hero. 6. heroine misunderstands the hero's next book 7. they reconcile and have a happy ending.

This is an okay book, but I just wish there was less of the formulaic romance plot here. I'd read from this author again, no question.

Tempted by Mr. Write is a very short, but fun read. The premise is great, love at first sight in Vegas, what better setting! Sheridan really rubbed me wrong through the first part of the story, she was super snarky and down on everything that wasn't going to prove her worth as a reporter instead of using everything as a stepping stone to prove herself. She comes off as bitter and angry about her father constantly telling her she's not as good a writer as her brother, yet he 'requires' her to work at his paper... But as the story progresses, she gets easier to take and I even started to root for her.

Mac is a man in a so called woman's world, but he doesn't meet the stereotypical male romance writer role. So it's no surprise that it's love at first sight for him and Sheridan. Their romance was a whirlwind with lots of ups and downs packed into a short novella, and an even shorter time frame.

This could have been a 5 star story if it had been extended out with some of the plot twists further developed. I think a little more detail in terms of some of the events would have added more depth to the story and would have developed the situation more fully. I felt a little let down at the end because I was reading and all of a sudden it was over, I felt like there was more to resolve.

Overall, for being such a short read, it kept me entertained. If you're looking for a quick read, this would be a great choice.

This is such a cute novella. The only problem with it is just that, it is a novella. I fell in love with Sheridan and Mac and when the story ended I wanted more of them!!

Sheridan is a journalist that thought she was going to get to go on an awesome assignment to where the President is going to be, but at the last minute, she was assigned to cover a Romance Writer's event. Sheridan is not happy to say the least. She sees herself as a hopeless romantic and does not understand the big deal about this Romance event. When Sheridan gets to the event, the first person she meets is B.A. Mackenzie aka "Mac". When she makes a smart comment about the event, she soon realized that B.A. is one of the few males authors in a female world. When Mac and Sheridan go to dinner together, they realize that there is something special about their relationship immediately.

Is this love at first sight or are they caught up in the atmosphere of the whole Romance Writer's conference?? You must read this short story in order to find out. You will not be disappointed!! I love having novellas to read. Sometimes I need a good story to read quickly and these scratch the itch for me. Sara Hantz does such a good job of making this a great story in the amount of time she had to make this a novella. Thanks for a great read!!

This book is all sorts of fun! I’ve always wanted to go to a romance book conference, and this cute novella took me right there, full of all of the wonderful details. I mean really, cover models, hot male romance writers, and one jaded journalist- what’s not to love?

I really enjoyed Sheridan as the leading lady in this book. She’s whip smart and just a little weary of spending a weekend in Las Vegas with rabid romance readers, but when it comes right down to it, she finds the joy contagious. I loved how sweet she was with the conference goers she meets along the way, and how willing she was to open up to the idea of love.

And Mac- yes! He’s such a great hero! I’m all for a hot male romance writer! I mean, seriously- a man in touch with his feminine side? Perfection. And I loved how he is with Sheridan!

Sheridan and Mac have instant chemistry, and I loved their witty banter and easygoing natures. This is a couple that romance fans can root for.

My only qualm about this book is that it was absolutely too short, coming in under a scant 100 pages. I led the characters and the setting so much, that I definitely could have used even more of them.

But- that being said, this novella is fun, cute, and pretty low on the heat scale for sexiness, so it will appeal to romance fans of any age. I certainly enjoyed it!

This was a quick and easy read with an interesting setting - a romance writer's convention, in which journalist Sheridan meets male romance author Mac. He's an anomaly in this setting and Sheridan's editor thinks a male versus female romance writer article would be great, though an inflammatory article might hurt Mac's career in the long run. Sheridan finds herself attracted to Mac and they share some intimate times, but when she thinks he's just using her for research will there be no happy ever after?

This is an insta-love type of story (hence why it's in the lovestruck line) and for a novella, it had all the ingredients necessary for these two to fall in love. I liked the idea of a male romance author as the hero of the story, and I thought the setting was well described and realistic. There is some chemistry between them, and they share some not overly detailed scenes, enough to show that they connect well. Though I enjoyed Mac's character I had a harder time getting behind Sheridan's - she was quick to jump to conclusions and a bit judgmental. The ending was a bit abrupt but leaves you with the knowledge that they'll be working on a way to be together in the future. 3 stars.

This is a very quick read, in fact I was quite surprised it ended so quickly! It could easily have been extended into a more lengthy novel. It takes a glance over the whole convention, stereotyping of romance authors (should they really be female?) and journalists, looks briefly at the atmosphere and ambiance of Las Vegas, adds in a little instant romance and then the story ends!

Sheridan Farlow is a journalist trying to live up to her Pulitzer winning brother’s political journalistic standards but being thwarted by her father who owns the media business and sends her to a Romance Writers’ Convention in Las Vegas instead. She’s cynical about romance but when she meets the author B. A. Mackenzie she may have to revise her opinions! “Mac” and Sheridan are instantly attracted but both are only there for the convention so what chance do they have to achieve their HEA?

If you’ve only got limited time and want a quick, fun to read romance novella this will be ideal.

Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley, too, for letting me read an ARC of this book in exchange for this, an honest review.

Tempted by Mr. Write by Sara Hantz is a fun read. The characters have a lot of potential but the story is too short and there are a lot of elements that could have been developed but they are only mentioned.

Sheridan is the daughter of a billionaire who owns the newspaper where she works. After his brother, also a journalist dies, she wants to prove to his father that she is also worthy of his admiration.

Her editor sends her to to cover a romance readers convention in Las Vegas, and she is not happy about it because she wanted to cover a presidential visit. She has prejudices about romances and their readers. There she meets author Bernard “Mac” Mackenzie. Mac writes romance novels and he does very well, though he doesn't want to be known he is a man writing romance because he thinks he will have less readers if they learn he is a man writing romance.

Sheridan and Mac have great chemistry but then the story doesn't really develop. It ends too quickly. I enjoyed it. i wish it could have been longer.

Tempted by Mr. Write by Sara Hantz, is a fun, lighthearted read with a catchy title. Unfortunately, the plot lacks depth. It is a love at first sight novella with two main characters that I really wanted to get to know, but their respective lives were just a flash in front of my eyes.

Sheridan Farlow is a journalist who works for her father's media conglomerate. She is assigned to cover a romance readers convention in Las Vegas, and she is not very happy about it. It is there where she meets romance author Bernard “Mac” Mackenzie. Mac has made a name for himself in the world of romance, despite the fact that most women typically prefer romance novels authored by women. Sheridan and Mac hit it off and in a little over a day, fall in love.

This story is a little far-fetched for my tastes. I truly liked Sheridan at first, but when she assumed the worst after only knowing Mac for one night, I lost a lot of respect for her. Overall, this is a fair read.

I kinda fell into this series and really enjoyed the last one had to try another one. I also realized it is a short one but they in itself can be just as yummy to read like a favorite snack. Sad though that some will count that against a story even when they know it is like that it should be on the content not the length if you are aware of it. Vegas can be fun if you are wanting to go but if you are not you might be in trouble. Sheridan is pulled off one important just to cover one that she feels is not her style especially since she does not even read romance. She also meets a guy she is attracted to at the start of it and when she sits to her about a author, floored when she finds out she is a he and many a fan is there too. Having been to a book signing event or two i enjoyed this one even more. She takes these two and twines them together to give a delicious romance that was fun to read. Mac might write romance that women snap up to read but he is all man enough for her. Even though the other story might of gave her fame in this one she gets more that fills her heart and soul.

Sometimes I find it difficult to review books like this. It was cute. It was sweet. But there wasn’t a whole lot more to it for me. It was really short and it had a lot of potential, but while I liked it, I think it fell a bit flat. I didn’t really feel a connection to either Sheridan or Mac. I wanted to. I really liked the idea of a female journalist and a male romance writer. I thought there was a lot that could have worked with this premise.

Overall, I felt bad for Sheridan. She was forced out of the job she wanted into a job that definitely wasn’t for her. Then she was told what to write instead of finding a story that spoke to her. At least she got the guy in the end and he was ridiculously sweet. Whether he was born that way or learned how to be that way after years of writing romance, who knows. I did like that they pushed each other to step out and do the things that they wanted to do career-wise. And I liked them together. They made a great couple.

Sheridan has a lot of preconceived notions about the romance industry when this story starts and as such, she makes the mistake of thinking she knows more than she does about romance authors and readers. Then she meets Mac and quickly discovers she doesn’t know quite as much as she thought…and worse, she’s attracted to the man!

I really enjoyed this novella. I loved the dynamic between the characters. They interacted well together and their scenes were a lot of fun and laced with an undercurrent of ‘kiss me, please.’ The book itself was well-written and engaging, drawing me into it’s simple, fast-paced storyline.

If you’ve followed along with this series, you’ll love this new addition by Sara Hantz. It’s a quick read, but it’s pages hold a fun, enjoyable story with two likable but opposite characters. I liked it a lot.

This is a very quick, short, predictable story about a journalist (Sheridan), and a romance book writer (Mac) , who meet at a romance book writers convention in Las Vegas. Sheridan is supposed to write an article about the convention, but it's the last thing she wanted to do until she met Mac.

I'm not a fan of short books, it forces the author to cram the story into just a few pages, which loses the character development that is so necessary without a rushed ending. I think the only thing I found amusing in this story was that the main focus was actually a romance writers convention, which Is the genre of books I love to read. I don't usually give books such a low rating, but unfortunately this story was just too rushed, predictable, and hard to get into the characters.

I was given this ARC copy for an honest review.

Sheridan Farlow just got stuck with covering a romance novel convention in Vegas over a high ranking political event. Obviously she is pissed, especially since the one that pulled her from that assignment is her dad, the one that is always comparing her to her dead brother.

While in Vegas, Sheridan meets Bernard "Mac" Mackenzie a male romance author. Sparks fly and after clearing up a small misunderstanding and a whole lot of fun, these two are able to have their happy ending.

What I didn't like about the story is that there is this constant issue with Sheridan and her dad, yet they never have a conversation, nothing. I felt like we had this piece of chocolate cake dangled in front of us and then had it yanked away from us. Though I did love Mac, he was just funny.

What a great novella! Sheridan was a refreshing female lead character who was firm in her beliefs and convictions. I enjoyed her inner dialogue and her tell it like it is attitude. Mac was a very charming sweet interesting man. He softened her on so many levels and made her believe in things she had given up on in life. Their immediate connection was very sweet and could make the cynic believe in love at first sight.

Although it was a short novella, it packed quite a punch, full of flirtation, hot loving, friendship, a little drama angst.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review from the publisher.

3.5 Stars Although cute and entertaining. I will say I wasn't crazy about the abruptness of the ending. The story was well worth the short time it took to read.
The characters (especially our writer hunk) grabbed and kept my attention. He was more on the softer side than the alpha men I'm more used to but no less loveable. Our female heroine was great when she gave herself up to romance but could also be a bit harsh about love. I guess that comes from being a reporter with a demanding father and over achieving brother. No matter.

I will say I enjoyed it but I really didn't care for the ending other wise I would have gave it a solid four stars.

I enjoyed this romantic and flirty novella. The characters and their meeting are romantic and filled with snappy dialogue. I liked Sheridan Farlow. She's a career woman who will do her best regardless of the circumstances while Mac aka B.A. Mackenzie is a romance writer like no other than I've encountered. Their role reversal caught my interest. I loved that the background for this Vegas story was a Romance Lovers Convention. I so wanted to be there in the midst of all the action and craziness. This was such a romantic story about dreams coming true. It hit the spot. I enjoy Sara Hantz writing style and I want more!

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley/Entangled Publishing for an honest review. "Tempted By Mr. Write" by Sara Hantz is a novella. Sheridan Farlow, journalist, ends up being removed from a really good cover story to covering a romance book conference. She doesn't believe in love due to past relationships. Well, that may change after meeting Mac Mackenzie, romance author. It is a novella so it's a very short story. There was lots of chemistry between Mac and Sheridan. It was a good little story for an extremely quick read.

Received a copy of the title in exchange for an honest review.

This was a super quick, sweet little read that follows a jaded journalist and a male romance novelist. I was a bit shocked at the length of this book -- I wanted more and wasn't expecting it to be novella length! Sara Hantz writes extremely well -- the dialogue was easy to follow and it was easy to get lost in the feelings of Sheridan and Mac. The reader goes through the entire emotional wheel with Sheridan as she's told she's not getting the assignment she wants, and then through her falling process.

Like I said, I wish it had been longer, but this is a good taste at the writing of Sara Hantz.
