Writer Jerrimiah Stonecastle REALLY knows how to get the reader 100% behind the protagonist! He shows us Robert Barton from the very beginning when he's born into his family until he is brutally attacked at age 16! We discover his unconventional family full of acceptance and respect for the queer heterosexual boy who loved dressing as a girl yet manages to attract a cadre of supporters for his differences. From school administrators to girls his own age, Robert has charmed them all.
Unfortunately, his differences have made him a target for some truly twisted individuals including guys who insist on considering him a gay teen who should enjoy men's sexual attention. He finds himself being hit on by grown men, stalked by a weirdo, and agreeing to sexual exploration that could have resulted in his being used in an unconsenting manner. Ironically, it is the latter situation that gives us a glimpse of the danger that exists within Robert's inner circle of friends. This friend is the first to abandon the relationship when they enter high school.
The writer reveals the details of Robert's assault in a couple of ways I hadn't experience in ANY narrative. First, we are given an idea of what Robert suffered through what is done to the men that are killed for attacking him. Second, Robert remembers the attacks as he is telling the audience aspects of the investigation into the murders of the perpetrators. But wait? How does the avenger know what was done to Robert and by which attacker? Heck! This story is BRILLIANT, completely brilliant! My only complaint is that the narrator is a woman and it did ruin the listening experience for me but without detracting significantly from the book. I SO would have loved hearing the audiobook read by a man! I kept thinking, "OMG. Kirt Graves would have been ABSOLUTELY perfect for this story!" At any rate, I'm looking forward to more of this writer's work. I haven't experienced a thriller quite this engaging EVER!
