Tackle students’ biggest barrier to complex word knowledge
In our rush toward complex texts, somehow we forget to put a new systematic vocabulary plan in place. Luckily, Laura Robb provides that instructional plan in Vocabulary Is Comprehension . The best part? Laura’s plan takes just 10 to 15 minutes, and much of it is spent in partner and independent work so this is no "add on" to squeeze in. All materials are included. There are 35+ lessons paired with 50+ complex texts
Author, teacher, coach, and speaker, Laura Robb has completed 43 years of teaching in grades 4-8.
She presently coaches teachers in reading/writing workshop at Powhatan School in Virginia and coaches teachers in grades K-8 in Staunton, Virginia, Long Island, and Ann Arbor, Michigan, and West Nyack, New York.
"The National Adolescent Literacy Coalition (2007) asserts that the literacy demands that students and teachers face today are 20 times greater than students faced two generations ago." This book digs into CCSS standards that deal with vocabulary and gives practical advice for teachers and schools. I think it is a good starting point for thinking about vocabulary instruction, but feel like the lessons would need extensions for them to become a school wide effort. Great starting point!
The content was great--very applicable to all grade levels (or at least, it's compatible to all grade levels)! Some of the sample lessons will work immediately. Others need some adjustment for my students and allotted class time.
