I won an ARC of this one in a Goodreads giveaway. Let me start out by saying that I am not the right audience for this book. It starts out with a person trying to figure out how to juggle things when they're thinking of becoming pregnant. Basically, you're going to scoff at a lot of this if you're several kids in and still balancing it all. And that's no offense to the author, that's just me being a jaded "workparent." This is definitely a book for millennials or xennials or whatever the current teen generation is. It's not a Gen X book at all. It's for those people who laughingly think that if they plan it out, that's the way things are going to be - you know, the shiny ones who haven't yet figured out that "life happens."
I’ve read many parenting books over the last two years, and this one was the MOST helpful, by far. Workparent is practical, realistic, and applicable to many parents who are juggling career and kids. I wish I had found this book sooner. Thank goodness for the positive review on NPR that led me to order a copy. I would definitely recommend for new or expecting parents.
This book is a travel guidebook that helps parents combine career and caregiving without losing themselves in the process. She also talks about staying healthy and whole as we meet the responsibilities of working and being a parent. In her career as a company executive coach, the author gave people advice on how to manage their careers professionally, but she didn't have much advice on how to do that while also being a parent.
The thing that is so great about this book is that it starts off by giving everybody a framework based on age. What do you need to know if you have toddlers? What do you need to know when you have teenagers? Towards the end, the author goes into different topics around maintaining your own health and how to keep yourself balanced. There's so much information for so many people at different stages of parenting. She also talks about creating a break between the two roles in some way, which allows us to show up as our full selves, to focus, to not feel so crazed and chaotic, and to be better in both parts of our lives.
The author did a great job breaking down each event into chapters, for example it begins with being pregnant, finding childcare, then into age groups, etc. It provides what to expect and tips on how to handle the situation. This gave me some insights on my next milestone of going back to work. Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for an ebook arc. This is my honest review.
This book provides practical, easy to understand, and helpful tips on how to be a successfull working parent. It is very comprehensive as it provides ample space to discuss the challenges of being a parent from the time of preparing to have babies up to the time that that they arenold enough to care for themselves.
