The First Unicorn

Rate this book
Almost everyone knows what a unicorn is, but do you know where they came from? Who was the first unicorn? How did he get his golden horn? And why did others follow in his footsteps?

Aden is a young horse, who believes that giving of his time and gifts is the best way to share hope in the world. One evening, he is visited by an angel who bestows a gift of gold upon his forehead, “You cannot see or spend it. It’s for others to behold.” Yet, when he returns home that evening, the herd sees the horn as a weapon and chases him away.
Sad but not discouraged, Aden continues to help and care for others. However, when his mother gets injured, he discovers his horn can perform miracles. It was that first miracle that softened the hearts of the others and inspired them to lead a God-filled life as well.

This story is about love, acceptance, kindness, and giving. It is the story of the First Unicorn and how God’s creation would succeed at greatness.

“Anything is possible if love is what you choose. Miracles can happen if you share the good news.”

At a glance, The First Unicorn may appear to be a charming children’s story with spiritual undertones, but it’s much more—a mosaic of morality, a critique of modern fads, and a reimagining of divine gifts. This book is a blend of lessons in kindness, courage, and faith woven through the life of Aden, the colt who became the first unicorn. Let us explore its unconventional brilliance.

An Ancient Myth with a Contemporary Soul
Unicorns have always been mythical, but Shields flips the narrative. Instead of depicting them as otherworldly, she grounds their origin in a biblical framework. Aden’s journey echoes the words of Friedrich Nietzsche, who said, "He who has a why to live can bear almost any how." Shields’ unicorns are not fantastical distractions; they are moral beacons, much like knights in medieval romances, reminding us of divine possibilities in a broken world.

This reinvention of the unicorn is a quiet jab at how the modern world commercializes them as frivolous symbols—rainbows and glitter. Shields brings back their gravitas, insisting they stand for something deeper: miracles, morality, and the sacred.

The Economics of Giving
Aden’s character champions altruism, not transactional kindness. There’s no quid pro quo in his deeds. This contrasts starkly with today’s data on volunteerism, which shows that acts of charity often come with expectations of social recognition or career benefits. A 2019 study revealed that 40% of volunteers cited "improving their résumés" as a motive. Aden’s narrative stands in rebellion against this, asserting that true kindness is its own reward.

Consider his horn—gifted by God not as a badge of honor but as a tool to serve others. This echoes the biblical verse, “To whom much is given, much will be required” (Luke 12:48). It’s as if Shields asks, “How would the world look if people used their gifts solely for others?”

Rethinking Rejection and Redemption
The herd's reaction to Aden—fear and ostracism—is painfully familiar to anyone who has ever felt out of place. Shields seems to channel J.K. Rowling’s "It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities." Aden chooses to persist, using his horn for healing and unity even after rejection.

This lesson is particularly poignant in our polarized world. The story’s turning point—when Aden uses his horn to save his mother—challenges readers to consider: What are we doing with the gifts we’ve been given?

Nature as a Teacher
Shields cleverly weaves ecological wisdom into Aden’s adventures. His admiration for teamwork among bees and his act of gathering fruit for a hedgehog subtly remind readers of interconnectedness. Shields’ vision aligns with what naturalists like John Muir have argued for centuries: “When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.”

An Evangelical Allegory
Some might balk at Shields’ overt Christian messaging, but it’s impossible to miss the parallels between Aden’s horn and Christ’s miracles. Just as Jesus performed acts that defied logic, Aden’s horn turns despair into hope. The book is less about proselytizing and more about urging readers to reflect on their relationship with faith and morality. Is faith a passive belief, or is it an active practice of kindness?

Why This Story Matters
In a culture saturated with cynicism, where even children’s stories often rely on sarcasm or shallow humor, The First Unicorn feels radical. It reclaims sincerity and offers readers—children and adults—a chance to reflect on the possibility of transformation.

Final Thoughts
The First Unicorn is not just a tale for children; it’s a call to adults to reconsider their values. Shields writes with the conviction of someone who believes that stories can change hearts. To dismiss this book as mere fantasy would be to miss its deeper question: What would the world look like if we all lived like Aden—kind, courageous, and guided by faith?

Would you, dear reader, be ready to earn your horn?

“The First Unicorn” by Kathleen J. Shields is a beautifully crafted Christian picture book that intertwines fantasy with themes of kindness, selflessness, and spiritual growth. Through the story of a colt named Aden, the book emphasizes the transformative power of compassion and the miraculous outcomes that follow from unwavering acts of love. This story is an allegory that transcends its Christian roots to deliver a universal message of goodness, making it suitable for readers across all beliefs.

Fantasy, kindness, and miracles converge in this story, which begins with Aden, a young horse who consistently puts others’ needs above his own. Through his pure-hearted deeds, he receives a unique gift—a golden horn bestowed by an angel, symbolizing his divine calling to inspire and aid others. Aden’s journey is a testament to perseverance despite rejection, a theme that is brought to life when he overcomes the doubts of his herd to bring about healing and transformation. Shields’ narrative weaves a heartfelt tale of how individuals, even when set apart by their uniqueness, can bring light and healing into the lives of others.

One of the book’s most poignant lines, “Being different was a challenge, yet the answers he would find, no matter what might happen, it was important to be kind,” encapsulates the ethos of the story. Acts of kindness and the courage to follow one’s calling, no matter how misunderstood, serve as powerful reminders for readers of all ages. Like the miraculous horn Aden wields, the book’s message shines as a beacon, encouraging readers to acknowledge their gifts and use them for the betterment of others.

The book does not shy away from its Christian symbolism, yet it remains accessible to a wide audience through its universal themes of love, acceptance, and selflessness. There are no elements of violence, crude language, or other adult themes, making it a family-friendly tale. Its lyrical prose, paired with charming illustrations, creates a story that uplifts and inspires.

This book is a winner of the Uplifting Lit Award. (Reference link that will go live on or after 15 December 2024: https://wordsofhopeandoptimism.com/20...)

Aden, a young horse, possesses an inherent tendency for generosity, dedicating his days to acts of kindness and service to others. In a herd more preoccupied with self-interest, Aden stands out as an exception, extending aid, gathering flowers, and uplifting his mother's spirits. The narrative unfolds intriguingly as a mysterious messenger bestows upon Aden a gift that illuminates his role as a selfless and caring individual. Yet, the crucial question arises: how will Aden's newfound gift be received by his peers? As the storyline progresses, Aden must muster his internal fortitude to uphold his convictions, navigating the challenges that lie ahead.

Kathleen J. Shields' The First Unicorn is an exploration of individuality and self-discovery. Aden, a protagonist distinguishable by his dissimilarity, grapples with the ostracism that readers of all ages can instantly relate to. In this journey, however, Aden emerges as an emblem of tenacity, exemplifying the mantra of 'being the change' and illuminating his surroundings with benevolence, regardless of societal perceptions. The narrative's poignancy is further accentuated by the splendid visual elements crafted by the adept hand of illustrator Aashay Utkarsh. The vibrant hues employed in the illustrations blend harmoniously with the narrative's optimistic undertones, amplifying the portrayal of authenticity and self-acceptance.

The First Unicorn champions the concept of self-discovery amid misunderstanding—a parable of courage and persistence. The story is interwoven with valor, optimism, and authenticity themes. It is a testament to the unyielding spirit of faith, the miraculous, and the embrace of one's unique identity, culminating in an inspirational account that resonates across generations.

Kathleen Shields takes her childhood memories and shares them in this exceptional children’s book. Her books never disappoint readers of every age, and the graphics are engaging. The First Unicorn takes young readers on a journey of life and choices for love and respect. Horses at the story's start are like people—some good, others not. The actions of one particular horse set him apart from the others. God notices the kindness and love in the horse’s heart and gives him the golden horn. Jealousy or fear makes the other horses kick him out of the herd for being different. Being different can be special or a burden, and the young horse has to find his way to the answers.

A tipping point occurs when his mother is mortally injured. Members of the herd let him know so he can pay his respects. His prayers are heard, and a miracle occurs that young readers will cherish. It is a faith-based story but so much more. The ability of a group of horses or people to find ways to believe in love, help one another, and shun bullying is a message for all young people. This is a story siblings, parents, or grandparents can share with youngsters on the right and wrong ways to treat others.

Ms. Shields always delivers a message that resonates with children and adults. I highly recommend this book for families to share openly about right from wrong. You can grab this outstanding book just in time for holiday gift-giving.

The First Unicorn is a whimsical children's picture book which tells the story of young Aden, a horse with a calling to do good deeds by helping the other animals who dwell in the forest. Aden is a brave and noble horse who loves and obeys his mother, prays to God for guidance, and always attempts to be honest and considerate of the horses and animals around him.

Aden's gift from the angels as appointed by God to receive his unicorn horn serves as an inspirational reminder that good deeds are recognized and rewarded. Virtuous character traits such as compassion, honesty, integrity, and kindness are made a central theme within this book as Kathleen writes about the character of young Aden and how these traits lead him to receive one of the greatest gifts that can be bestowed upon a young horse.

Even after receiving his unicorn horn, Aden still continues to listen to the animals of the forest and help however and whenever he possibly can.

Parents and teachers will adore this book as it tells a charming story while highlighting developmental milestones which children will hopefully attempt to endeavor to repeat. Children will be entertained by the charming rhyme of the story and the beautiful illustrations. The few plot twists will keep readers on the edge of their seats and clamoring to turn the pages to complete the entire story.

Messages of The First Unicorn.

This meaningful book will take young readers to a magical land where kindness, generosity, and love that is awarded by God. It waves a story of a little deserted unicorn that regardless of all obstacles stayed true to the values that were implanted in the horse land. By acting kind, the little unicorn received the gift of his life, the golden horn.

I wish this book was written in prose not in rhyming style, because it was a little choppy in some places. But kids may have a different opinion.
Regardless of Christian style, this little book carries an inspirational message to be kind and spreads the faith to children who may feel underappreciated.

It is a great fit for families who like to teach youngsters values to help others. The importance of empathy and love, and finally find a place under the sun, will bind parents and children as they learn how to be their best.
Overall: it is a good book for families and institutions that try to engage children and students in a meaningful conversation without too much preaching.

THE FIRST UNICORN has an attractive cover and colourful, comix-style illustrations.
The narrative will be admired by families looking for references to God and teaching Bible basics and morality.
The title may excite curious young minds looking for faith-building publications.

The author weaves together a story using rhymes.
It is true that good rhymes indeed teach children how words sound and how language works.
Excellent poetic publications also teach phonemic awareness and literacy skills.
Unfortunately, many verses in the story are forced as they lead the narrative and strangle the plot.
The rhythm is often lost and the cadence is clumsy, therefore children (yes, they all love rhyming text) won't be able to retain the words easily, although the story teaches a good moral lesson.

I probably should have read the blurb more carefully, but this book was not quite what I had expected. I anticipated a fairytale-type story - Angels included - about how the first Unicorn came into being. But it turned out to be a Bible-inspired take.

Be that as it may, I am sure this book will appeal to Christian parents and their children.

For me, it was slightly repetitive in its messaging, and Aden came across as a bit of a goody two-shoes.

But its fundamental messages about kindness and helping others is a very valuable one. And the illustrations are really cute. So if the biblical aspect also appeals, you should go ahead and get this book.

Beautifully written story about Aden. He was a kind yearling that watched out for others and brought his mother flowers every morning. One night an angel appeared. The gift he received changed Aden's life and his future. She told Aden, "From now on you must share this gift, so others will believe. The miracles within will appear to fill a need."

Time passes and Aden helps numerous creatures in need. Then one day he is faced with a tragedy. His prayers and use of his precious gift filled a need and created a miracle.

The illustrations are a perfect match for the storyline. So many lessons in this book-kindness, sharing, caring, believing...highly recommend.

The verses often feel unnatural, steering the storyline in a way that disrupts its flow. The pacing is uneven and the rhymes feel awkward, which may make it difficult for children who usually enjoy lyrical text to remember the lines. Still, the tale manages to convey an important message. Also, the illustrations were underwhelming, coming across as flat and uninspired, with a generic quality that fails to capture the imagination.

What a wonderful book! The story itself follows a horse, in which God takes notice in. Gifts the horse woth a special gift. Though the special gift is not well received from the other horses. As they shun the horse off. He is upset, but then sees a reason behind God's gift. Even though it's not accepted by his family.

This is such a great story. Full blown story, but that's a good thing.

I enjoyed how the author explained how the unicorn got his golden horn. What a fun book to teach children how blessed it is to do good to others. It also teaches children how God has made each one of us unique and special in His eyes. A lesson I believe we each need to learn and remember.

I personally do not like poetry or books that rhyme but my young grandsons like rhyming books. I know they would enjoy this book! The illustrations are wonderful and colorful. The story is just the right length to keep little ones attention.
