I know what you're thinking, "Not another Atlantis story!"
I'll let you in on a little secret: If you like your novels to be thought-provoking - with history, archaeology, myth, legend, action, adventure, and more, mixed together in perfect proportion - then Atlantis is the must-read of the year for you. But don't take my word for it. There are as many threads to the Atlantis legend as there were colors in Joseph's coat. No, Jacob's prodigal does not figure in the Atlantean tale, but Wood has obviously undertaken a tremendous amount of research and woven it all into a believable, compelling action/adventure featuring his hero Dane Maddock.
Along with ever-present sidekick Uriah "Bones" Bonebrake, Atlantis finds Maddock testing a new underwater toy off of Key West when a tsunami strikes. Before long, their old nemesis The Dominion rears its ugly head and from then on it's non-stop action and intrigue as Maddock, Bones, their new boss Tam Broderick and Atlantis expert Dr. Sofia Perez race to thwart The Dominion's plans for - what else? - world domination.
I've read all of the entries in Wood's Dane Maddock Adventures, starting with Dourado. Each and every one was well researched with an engaging plot, interesting characters and lots of action. I can state from experience that Atlantis is the best Maddock yet. The mysteries are deeper, the conflicts are more dangerous, the relationships are more three-dimensional, and that helps Atlantis be more of everything a great novel needs to be.
I'll admit that one of the big dings Wood has previously received from many reviewers for earlier Maddock adventures - myself included - was the error count. Although all of the Dane Maddock Adventures are fantastic tales, the occasional typo did distract. That won't be an issue here; Atlantis is an impeccably researched, cleanly written, and well-told tale.
From the opening discovery of a suspected Atlantean temple in Spain, to the fantastic finish involving the Eye of the Sahara, Wood will keep you enthralled and make you wonder: Could this really be the secret of Atlantis?
I don't know what else I can tell you that would convince you to read this novel. I grew up reading Alistair MacLean, Helen MacInnes, Dick Francis, Robert Ludlum, Ken Follett and more. David Wood's Atlantis is a tremendous read and I would put it side by side with the great action/adventures of our day. Clive Cussler? Dan Brown? I hope you guys have room in your club for another member. David Wood has arrived.
I like my thrillers with lots of explosions, global locations and a mystery where I learn something new. Wood delivers in this book as Dane Maddock, Bones and a new team race to find the remnants of Atlantis. Recommended as a fast paced, kick ass read.
If you are not reading David Wood's books, you are missing out. He is the author of books from across almost every genre (here are a few: horror- Dark Rite, young adult-You Suck, fantasy - The Absent God Series, historical fiction - Into the Woods and (my favorite) action adventure - the Dane Maddock's series). In his new book Atlantis, Maddock and Bones continue their battle against The Dominion (the organization out to cleanse the world). Teaming up with Tam, Willis, Avery, and Corey from previous novel, they must race to find the legendary cities of Atlantis to prevent the Dominion from gaining controlling of technology that could be used to bestowed upon the world a fate only Atlantis has every experienced. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys books by James Rollin, Jeremy Robinson, and Paul Kemprecos. I can wait to see what historical mystery David will tackle next. Maybe the Bermuda Triangle???
I really enjoyed this book. I am so glad I discovered this author, he manages to write a captivating adventure that not only hooks the listener until the very end but I also takes you on a roller coaster of a ride where you experience every emotion there is. He does this by knowing how to write characters that you care about and what happens to them. I loved the team in this book, with the witty banter and history between them. Even though this is book six, this is only the third book I have listened to (but I plan to listen to the rest very soon) it doesn't matter that I have listened to them out of order because each book does work well as standalone. The other thing about this series is how much research the author has done to include in each adventure and the possible explanation of unexplained things. So even if you are not a history buff the author imagination will have you diving into a new adventure with Maddock and Bones with guns blazing. When all the deaths can't be explained by the tsunami ex navy seals Maddock and Bone fear there old friends the Dominion might be up to there old tricks of taking over the world. An archaeological dig group is wiped out leaving only one person behind to explain there unusual discovery. Could the artefact she discovered explain how the Dominion could be hind the unusual attacks? What has Poseidon and the lost city of Atlantis got to do with it or the church? It's up to Maddock and his team of archaeologist, ex seals and computer geeks to discover and put a stop to it. I rest like the narrator and hope he ans to stick with the series, as I can't imagine anybody else doing such a good job of bringing Maddock and the gang to life. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
David Wood never disappoints. I love how his stories always start with a a bang and into action we go. Though, Dane Maddock and Bones aren't the type to lounge around and do nothing. Well, at least not for long. lol. Then, the rest of the crew follows suit easily. This is why they all are great together on the missions.
Each member of the crew knows who they are and have bold personalities. They aren't afraid to be themselves and voice things. Also, all things are welcome to be voiced as in their line of work there could be danger if not discussed beforehand. This makes for a great friendships when you trust people so truly. Which leads to great quick quips and banter. Great friends like family. And some family too. ;)
As expected, there's lots of action and mystery and danger. I love seeing them go diving, climbing, and so much more.
The group does separate in this book to accomplish different goals on the same mission. Sometimes I struggled keeping up with what we learn and keeping it straight as we moved on to the next group. That's when things are coming to a head and we need all the pieces at the same time!
I enjoy these books so much, I went and printed the checklist from David's site so I can track what I've listened to and what I still need. :) I'm going to work to get on track and in order with his books. :)

The first book in the series that I would say matches Blue Descent in quality.
The gangs all here - Bones, Maddock, Willis, Tam, and Jade gang up to stop the dominion from destroying cities with tsunamis.
A dig in spain uncovers an atlantean city, but the Dominion arrives, kills everyone and takes the strange machine stored in the temple. The lead archeologist finds her way to Tam Broderick, who assigns Dane and the team to solve the mysteries of Atlantis and stop the Dominion. And that they do - they trace the trail of Atlantean civilization from Cuba to Japan to a secret library under the sphinx, ultimately leading them to a showdown with Bishop Hadel of the Dominion inside a hidden temple-city in Africa. They discover that the Atlanteans were real, and likely aliens, and probably related to Lucifer and Goliath from book 1.
They stop Hadel, and the book ends with Dane debating between Jade and Angel.
Really solid beach-read type story. Not too much thinking here, just good old fashioned indiana jones fun. And for that, I prefer David Wood to even Clive Cussler or James Rollins. Dane and Bones are a loveable pair, Jade, Angel, Avery, Tam, Corey, Matt, and Willis are all fine(if shallow) side characters, and there are always plenty of conspiracy theorys for Dane and Bones to discover and inadvertently destroy. Fun all around.

Ok this book was WILD! Real places and histories mixed with conspiracies and neo-nazi ideologies. This book had me flipping pages that I finished it in two days! The twists, turns, high stakes, and brutality of how people are willing to go to extremes for their religious beliefs shows you everything harmful that they’re willing to do to “cleanse” the world we share. A lot of the ideas in here are what’s being shown currently in the states and that alone is TELLING! I loved the end when they learned the truth about everything that goes to show humanity never learned from their Hubris. I’m excited to continue reading this authors works because it really gets your mind going! Off to the loch I go!
In a salt marsh near Cadiz, Spain, Archeologist Sofia Perez has just made the discovery of her life: the Temple of Poseidon, only to have to it stolen away from her. Her whole team is murdered, she barely escapes and the site flooded. She finds her way to Dane Maddock and his team who after examining the artifacts she managed to get away with, resolve to uncover what’s going on.
Footnote:1) I love discovering new places on the Earth when reading books. Like the one in Mauritania.
Fave scenes: Willis driving the glass bottomed boat, the CO scrubber, meeting Krueger in the store and the location of ancient Atlantis.
This is the first Dane and Bones book that l have read. Found l like these two adventurers and want to discover more about them and their motley group which seems to grow. Look forward to deciding will l find out what happens next or go to beginning... David Wood has ended this story so as to leave the reader wanting to carry on...
What happens when an ancient technology falls into the wrong hands? Who is going to be there when the very ocean itself is turned against our coastal cities? Got it! Dane and Bones ride knee deep into a sinister conspiracy to destabilize the world.
These adventures keep getting better and better. Maddock and Bones are now working with the government to stop the Dominion but the hunt for treasure is far from over. Very fun audio adventures and I highly recommend!!
A new and exciting take on the existence of a culture only written about centuries ago. Still issues of editing and characters misplaced but all in all a good read.
Houston, we have jumped the shark. It had been building up to it in the last few books, but this one was harder to get through with the various plot lines and ideas stolen from various places.
I've been enjoying greatly the Dane Maddock adventures by David Wood for over a year now. "Atlantis" is the latest installment in the series and delivers a great thriller read.
The pace is just about perfect with just the right amount of over the top action followed by tense scenes in which the plot goes in wholly unexpected directions.
There are several remarkable things about the series overall. First is the sheer consistency of the primary characters. The relationship between Dane and his best friend, Bones, is depicted very well. The tone, voice and interactions are perfect. In addition the globe-trotting travel scenes and exotic locations are done very well. One almost feels as if they are standing in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower in Paris or diving off the coast of Japan. The bad guys are bad for all the right reasons. In "Atlantis" I was particularly impressed by the manner in which Wood ties together obscure clues from prior works into an awesome reveal. Finally the author makes it very clear, early on, that the setting is dangerous. Protagonists will be shot, stabbed, crushed, blown up, fall great distances, get nibbled upon by rabid velociraptors (okay, now I'm exaggerating...)in the pages. Definitely makes the stakes higher.
But most impressive to me, was the manner in which Wood digs deeper into Maddock and exposes his flaw for the reader to see. The ending of the book was surprisingly tender for a thriller work and concludes with an excellent cliffhanger, but not the kind one typically reads in such high-octane fare.
My only issue with the work has nothing to do with the story, thus doesn't affect my star ratings. There were a LOT of typos and similar formatting errors in the novel. That was not the case with the previous works, even the related novellas which were written. I'm not sure how much proof reading took place, but I think it could have used another couple of passes before being published.
Again, a minor point. "Atlantis" was a very entertaining read.
Atlantis by David Wood is the BEST Dane Maddock book by far and I have loved them all. Atlantis is enriched with myths, legends, archaeology, action and adventure galore and even a wee bit of romance trouble. This is the 1st adventure in which Dane, Bones and their team are working for Tam. It is a little uneasy giving up control but our heroes rise to the occasion and still fly by the seat of their pants at time. In Atlantis, the group is working against the the US division of the Dominion. They have found a machine that is said to be from Atlantis and they use it to reek destruction of US cities. This is not just another Atlantis story. It has a fresh twist and our very lovable Dane and Bones to the rescue. I can't wait for the next book in the Dane Maddock Adventures as David Wood left the ending totally and completely unanswered. Well played, David. If you haven't read a Dane Maddock Adventure, you have no idea what you are missing. A must read series.
In this book Maddock and Bones joins an archeologist searching for the lost continent of Atlantis, and its hidden powers. It is a little bit weird that I like these books as much as I do, but I think they are a kind of guilty pleasure. Also, they are potato chips books, as in you always want one more. The characters of Maddock and Bones are very, very stereotypical ex navy seals, and somewhat one dimensional. Each book is based on a historical myth, and they are sometimes a little bit repetitive. But the action and adventure is great and very fast paced, and the books are enjoyable.
Once again I'm torn between 3 and 4 stars for a David Wood book. 4 solid stars for the story but the typos were once again very distracting. Last time I was a softy and went with 4 stars. This time it's 3. The story was good but the distractions were too much to overlook this time. In addition to the typos, scenes changed without so much as an extra blank line. It's a pet peeve of mine that I can usually overlook but it really interrupted the flow of the story for me this time. I enjoyed the story, the action was pretty well written and I found myself investing in the characters. The ending left the door wide open for the next book which I await with eager anticipation. Note: the version I read was an ebook from BN.
To those of you who have read both, the similarities are obvious. David Wood's characters are cut from the same rugged cloth as those of Clive Cussler. I have read most of Cussler's and all of Wood's adventure books. Without reservation, I hold Wood in the same high regard as Cussler. The adventures are fast paced fun reads with interesting subjects and plenty of action. Atlantis was not the best of this series, with that said, I would still recommend it without reservation to anyone who enjoys this genre. I hope that David Wood continues the independent ways of Maddock and Bones in future books. I personally don't want to see them become "government employees" who are part of a bigger team.
I just finished listening to this story in audio format from audible.com. Can I say WOW! For anyone who likes The National treasure, you will love this book too! Excellent story! Well delivered. Loads of excitement. Murder, mayhem, mythology, puzzle solving, adventure, action-packed dangerous thrill ride! The story starts out with a Tsunami in the Florida Keys! Can you imagine? Already I am intrigued! This story took me back to the school days when I was learning about Mythology. The characters I could relate to & the story is very believable! Lots of traveling & puzzle solving in this story too. People won't be disappointed in this read with tons of mystery/thriller/ suspense in it... even terrorism! Kuddos to the author for a job well done!
Maddock and Bones head out to take on The Dominion again and end up looking into the legend of Atlantis. Wood follows the Atlantis/Aliens theory and even sends a message out into space. This could go cliche or end up being very interesting. So far he's handled things very well and this should prove interesting. I loved the book and the way he played it out.
Biggest frustration: The cliffhanger between Angel and Maddock at the end. Now I can't wait for the next book!! Hurry up and write it Mr. Wood!
Yet another great roller coaster of a ride with Maddock, Bones and crew this time in a race to find Atlantis and save the world. A really good story line great development of the characters and a great cliffhanger ending. David Wood is certainly up there with Cussler, Rollins, Brown and Co bring on the next.
Another great adventure with Bones & Maddock. I love these guys, every adventure of theirs is great. But, I don't think this was the best book of the series. I think it needed a better proof reader because there were a lot of typos that should have been caught. Although not the best, still get 5 stars because it is still a fun Bones & Maddock book!!!
The Dane Maddock adventures are kind of a guilty pleasure for me. I read them, I enjoy them, but then quickly forget about them. I couldn't tell you the differences between the previous novels, and other than Maddock and Bones, barely remembered the supporting characters. But the books are short, fun, and full of action. I like that they also include some historical mystery as well.
