Never Happen to You: True Crime Junkies, Book 3

Rate this book
Crime is something that happens to strangers. Until it’s not.

As women continue to vanish in Alaska’s Far North, the Arctic Circle Murder Club meets again to combine their skills and search for the truth. Only the evidence isn’t adding up. The case of The Missing Women of Dalton Highway has gone cold, and every new possibility leaves them with frostbite.

Duke McAllister’s and Andi Slade’s personal investigations point them in new directions, and they’re left with more questions than ever. But there’s one thing they—and the rest of the true crime podcasters—know for whoever is behind these disappearances will keep taking women until he’s caught.

Will the team find answers and expose the truth before this madman strikes again? Or will the secrets of the infamous Dalton Highway remain as isolated as the landscape surrounding them?

Christy Barritt is an author, freelance writer and speaker who lives in Virginia. She’s married to her Prince Charming, a man who thinks she’s hilarious—but only when she’s not trying to be. Christy’s a self-proclaimed klutz, an avid music lover who’s known for spontaneously bursting into song, and a road trip aficionado. She’s only won one contest in her life—and her prize was kissing a pig (okay, okay… actually she did win the Daphne du Maurier Award for Excellence in Suspense and Mystery also). Her current claim to fame is showing off her mother, who looks just like former First Lady Barbara Bush
When she’s not working or spending time with her family, she enjoys singing, playing the guitar, and exploring small, unsuspecting towns where people have no idea how accident prone she is.

As my favorite true crime detective Joe Kinda would say.... Well my my my!! I am loving this new series! Are there two crimes or just the one that the club are now investigating? What happens when you step into a mess you don't want to be in and what happens to Andi and Duke when they keep stepping into places that almost cost them their lives? The answers are in the pages and you need to read this book!

For some reason, the murder club wasn't as much fun in this story as they have been in the series, yet still a page turner for sure. Now the group has a billionaire backing them up just because he wants to help them solve the crimes and because someone might also be after him. He's actually a fun character, but he's only briefly in the story (please add more of him).

Andi figures out that there is human trafficking going on in Alaska and works to expose it with Duke's help. Nothing graphic happens, but still a powerful crime is solved with their risky investigation.

Duke still has not resolved what happened to Celeste and his attraction for Andi gets stronger every chapter.

The main criminal in this one is abusive and creepy and he's in much of the plot, some of the details of his abuse is difficult to read for this sensitive reader, but thankfully it all works out.

Didn't enjoy--SPOILERS: Andi and the other young woman get into an argument over a misunderstanding, including Andi deciding whether they should accept the billionaire's contract and all expenses paid on his terms; Andi comes face-to-face with a grizzly bear, whoa; the husband with the missing wife they are investigating loves to drink and flirt with every woman he meets until he gets in trouble and lands in jail; the main criminal in this one likes to yell at his victim, choke her against the wall, threaten to send his killer dogs after her unless she cooperates, and even whip her as punishment; Duke is now being threatened to stop pursuing answers about Celeste and I was surprised he fell for the ruse; Dani is still being threatened because of her quest for revenge with another man who ruined her career (someone hides in her apartment and someone deletes her banking account)...that about covers it.

Loved that human trafficking is brought into the story with respect and how Andi doesn't back down looking into it. Love her spunk and determination, even when she is faced with the grizzly! Also liked how the hotel owner got involved with the group to help them investigate.

For some reason this book didn't feel as well written as the previous ones, it's still good, but Andi's thoughts and Duke's thoughts/hesitations/inner questions seem to take more room in the story than before and I'm more interested in them getting closure than their questions and worries.

Just amazing how Barritt describes Alaska so vividly and tangibly, both the setting and the residents. She has some of the best dialogue of most authors I've read. In this story, it's implied that Detective Gibson might be guilty at some point and both Duke and myself refused to believe this. I understand there are sick people in this world, Barritt is genius is writing them no matter how disturbing the content gets, but having a good character betray us like that after solving multiple crimes in the series...come on now! However, it WOULD be nice if Gibson got his own story at some point, he really does add toe the murder club.

This third installment in the True Crime Junkies series had me so engrossed in trying to discovering the identity of the villain I was turning the pages until the end. The Arctic Circle Murder Club is investigating the missing women who vanished from the Dalton Highway. As the members investigate, there are close calls, twists and turns, dead ends, and a human trafficking ring.
Andi is still wanting revenge on the person responsible for making her to lose her job as a lawyer and may be behind other incidents that have happened to her. Duke is still wanting to know what happened to Celeste as he and Andi both saw a woman who looks like her around.
Looking forward to the fourth installment in this series.

Oh man was I fooled by the rave reviews for this one! It reads like it was written by a barely literate 12 year old. Wow. Never again.

Never Happen To You by Christy Barritt features a villain that made me cringe. Returning to familiar characters, Barritt brings along the podcaster along for the ride to hunt for the dead woman along a road in Alaska. In true Barritt fashion, she has created enough tension and moments of action to keep any fans of mysteries happy. A little bit of romance, but nothing too much. The main two characters are starting to recognize their feelings for each other but have not acted on them yet. Readers will enjoy how Barritt follows the podcasters as they hunt down clues and go to different places in Alaska. A good way to enjoy a mystery with plenty of twists and turns for a couple of hours.

I received a complimentary copy of Never Happen To You by Christy Barritt, but the opinions stated are all my own.

This one didn’t wow me as much as the rest of the series did. I felt like the plot was a little slow and the characters were chasing leads that were kind of illogical. I felt like there was too much chasing of shadows or people who you couldn’t make out their face. It just seems like the continuous plot thread from the previous books made no headway.

"No roads. No neighbors. No stores. No hope."

Women were still disappearing off Alaska's Dalton Highway. Even as the Arctic Circle Murder Club was assembling for their monthly meeting, news of an eighth woman was beginning to make headlines, primarily because her family had the resources to draw full media attention. Their odd grouping of crime podcast enthusiasts was morphing into an investigative team of sorts, while pushing Duke McAllister and Andi Slade's personal agendas to the back burner. Private investors and prime time interviews might bring the group some welcomed revenue, but it wouldn't find Duke's missing fiancee or bring Andi closer to exposing a dangerous criminal enterprise which had destroyed her livelihood and threatened her life. Plus, the more time Andi and Duke spent together . . . . . . Ultimately what the group does uncover, is unlike anything they expected to find. Times two.

"Anxiety and apprehension . . . could control a person. That wasn't the life Andi wanted to live. . . . If tragedy could happen to her, then hope could also."

Extremely well plotted, the author takes her readers on a high speed chase for justice while hiding stories within stories, clues within clues, and characters within characters. The sweetest part? . . . . watching Andi and Duke tighten their heartstrings.

I love this series! Exclamation point!

This is the 3rd in the series and one of the best!! This time the Arctic Circle Murder Club is meeting again to find the Missing Women of Dalton Highway. There have been 7 missing women and one is the fiancee of Duke McAllister, one of the members of the club.

All the members are back including Andi who is still being followed by someone who is threatening her and breaking into her apartment. Could it be the man that destroyed her career, Victor, who she has been seeking revenge against, the reason why she is in Alaska.

Will the team get all the answers this time and will they finally find Duke's fiancee, Celeste? Is Celeste on of the missing women from the Dalton Highway, or is she the strange woman Duke keeps seeing?

We have to wait until the next one which is coming out next month to follow along with some more cases that the Arctic Murder Club will be looking at!!!!!

This True Crime Junkies series is growing on me! The deeper the characters dive into the missing women of Dalton Highway, the higher the stakes become. Yet the mystery around Duke's missing fiancée gets weirder and weirder.

In book three of this series, the characters are really developing and their personalities are starting to mesh (or maybe conflict is a better word). I love the realism of the characters and how difficult it can be to work together when you are so different.

From the opening pages, I was hooked. The book has a bit of a Criminal Minds vibe, with its look into the sick mind of a killer. The overarching storylines for both Duke and Andi are also getting more and more interesting.

You can enjoy this book as a standalone, but you'll enjoy it even more if you read the first two books first.

I was reading this book about a second after it dropped. The love of the first two had me chomping at the bit in anticipation.
It didn’t disappoint.
The stats don’t lie, a lot of people disappear in Alaska and if this book is any indication of their outcome - let’s just say …not visiting anytime soon.
There is so much going on with these characters. Things are happening here - happening there.
Are they connected?
No clue!
So I keep reading…
So what the clock says 3am. I’m white knuckled around my iPad wanting to know what’s next.
I’m obsessed with this series. I love the characters and their struggles which help them see their need for Jesus.
The storyline grabs you like a pit bull on a ribeye and refuses to let go. From there it’s a chilling adventure that comes to an end too quickly.
My only complaint? The book wasn’t 500 pages. 😉

The Arctic Circle Murder Club is back again in this third installment of the True Crime Junkies series. This is the best one yet! I was excited for the team to finally devote their time to trying to solve the mystery of the missing women of Dalton Highway. This case was personal for them. Duke's fiancée went missing on the highway a few years ago, and he's been looking for her ever since.

This story kept me on my toes! There were quite a few unexpected twists that I never saw coming. The villain was a truly disturbed individual who made my skin crawl. I probably should've guessed their identity. The clues were all there, but I was completely surprised by the reveal.

This is quickly becoming my favorite Christy Barritt series. If you're looking for an exciting mystery full of twists and turns, you'll love this series! I highly recommend it!

The gripping third book in the True Crime Junkies series offers nail-biting suspense throughout and keeps readers guessing who could be behind the missing women. Even if you haven’t read the first two, you will be swept into this intense mystery that can stand alone, but I recommend reading the series in order for the best experience. Set in a remote area of frigid Alaska, the Arctic Circle Murder Club continues to press on to solve crimes and learn what happened to these women who disappeared. The intriguing novel leaves you wanting more, so I hope the series will continue. I received a copy from the author. All opinions are my own.

More women keep disappearing from Dalton Highway in Alaska in this third installment of the True Crime Junkies Series by Christy Barritt, and the true crime podcasters put everything on the line, even their own lives, to discover what is going on. More attention is being brought to the missing women because of the identity of the latest one.
I am really enjoying the quirky group of characters in this series, learning more about Alaska in each book, the mystery solved in each book, and the storylines that carry throughout the series.
I received a free copy of this book but the opinions are all my own.

TRUE CRIME JUNKIES BOOK 3

The Arctic Murder Club have decided to work on The Missing Women of Dalton Highway as their next project/murder to solve! So far, they have solved 2 other serial murder cases. This one hits close to Simmy as well as Duke since they both know Celeste. Duke was engaged to her before her disappearance. Andi has had someone break into her apartment & she is worried Victor has figured out she is in Fairbanks now. Each book so far has been harder to put down. This is Christian fiction so it is as good as Cozy Mysteries about "being clean"! Looking forward to reading Book 4!

I had a BETA copy of this book, but this is my voluntary and honest opinion. Duke, Andi and the Team are researching the missing women of Dalton Highway. Clues continue to be scarce, and women are still disappearing. They manage to get to the oil fields to try to find more clues. On the way back they are run off the road so they must be close, but it turns out to be a human trafficking ring they discover, not the missing women. A suspense filled book which will keep you turning the pages to find the answers. A great read!

It Was HIM the whole time!

No, I’m not going to tell you who “him” is, you’ve got to read it for yourself! This series is a roller coaster, so hang on tight and be prepared to lose a bit of sleep. Duke and Andi and their true crime solving club are hard at work trying to get to the bottom of the mystery of all these women disappearing. Unfortunately, they get a little too close. Unfortunately, again, their work does not solve the mystery of Duke’s missing fiancé. Bring on Book 4!

This is the third in the series of Duke, formerly a private investigator for the CID who is a tour guide in Alaska while he searches for his missing fiancé.

Andi, a disbarred attorney from TX, who is in alaska seeking retribution from the powerful man who got her disbarred.

Duke & Andi are part of the Arctic Circle Murder Club, 6 people who get together once a month to work on a podcast solving mysteries.

This book deals with the search for several women who have gone mussing from a particular area in northern Alaska.

4/5 stars. This book will make you do an all-nighter. Perfect combination of mystery and suspense. Christy Barritt knows how to make creative crime mysteries that no one would have ever thought about. The romance subplot is really small and interesting. I didn't want to put the book down before discovering what happened to all the disappeared women. The answer to that question is so unique and you would never think that the killer would be the person it was. 100% recommend it if you like mystery, crime, and suspense!

This series just keeps getting better. I wasn't sure about the first one at first. It IS a different type of series than Barritt usually writes, but I am really liking it. And book 3 was awesome. I am hoping that Duke and Andi eventually get together and he gives up on the elusive Celeste...but it looks like that isn't happening yet.

The author came up with a great cast of characters for the team, and they all together make for an interesting and entertaining read.

Frozen Alaska

Duke, Andi, Ranger, Simmy, and the twins get caught up in the search for the missing women of Dalton Road and meet danger along the road. They find a frozen body, then bones, then a hungry bear chases them. Meantime boogey men have raided Andi's bank account and cleaned her out, she gets fired and now has no way to pay her bills. Should she take Duke's offer to be a tour guide? I sense another book coming because we have loose ends to tie up.

Chilling is just the tip of the iceburg

The search for Celeste is getting complicated by the minute. Is she alive and well and warning Duke to leave her alone?
Is Andi any closer to finding Victor's secrets? Christy has a gift of writing these mysteries, she keeps you on the edge and draws you into the story as if you know these victims and their pain and the unfathomable creeps who are perpetrating these crimes. Can't wait for next meeting of the Artic club!

Never Happen To You

Book Three continues the tales of The Arctic Circle Murder Club.
Again, the development of the characters continues to improve, as they grow and change.
The writing also improves with each book, as well.
Overall, I enjoyed this outing more than the previous two, although one of the characters does another “stupid,” this time wandering away from the group, requiring rescue.
I’m off to read book Four.
Happy reading.

Absolutely wonderful!

The Arctic Circle Murder Club is together again. They are investigating the missing women of Dalton Highway and keep running into a lot of dead ends. None of the evidence seems to be adding up and another woman has gone missing recently. For every dead end, another clue seems to pops up leading in another direction. Will they be able to solve the mystery before the next victim is taken?

I absolutely love the True Crime Junkies Book series! The crimes that the team gets pulled into as they are trying to solve the missing women never disappoints. Book 3 definitely kept me on the edge of my seat and the sizzle between Andi & Duke had me hopeful that something would become of it. Life is too short!

Team conflicts, harsh weather, multiple mysteries and threats create a tsunami against the group. As they work against the clock, internal struggles and shifts abound. Fans of true crime, suspense and Christy Barritt will find plenty of action with twisted leads.

I received a complimentary copy of the book without obligation. This review is my opinion.

Another page turner by Christy

This series is definitely a thought provoking page turner.
Will Duke get an answer on Celeste? Who is truly after Andi?
So many questions. Duke and Andi definitely have a connection. Will these questions be answered? Yes, you need to read this book to find out. It will be worth it.

The fear is real. Danger abounds.

One of the best Christy has written. I didn't want to put the book down. The mysteries get deeper and more difficult to solve. Andie and Duke are great characters with heart and love to help find answers to the hardest questions. Just read and you will love the story.

Another entertaining read in the True Crime Junkies Series. Clean, budding romance blends with action and mystery to pull the reader into the ongoing chronicles of Arctic Circle Murder Club. Women continue to disappear in Alaska’s far north. Are their disappearances linked to those of the past or are other perverse kidnappers out there? If you like this genre, you will enjoy this series.
