The Price of Freedom #2

The Key to the Grave: The Price of Freedom, Book 2

Rate this book
My name is Sumto. I have met the enemies of the city and prevailed against them, admittedly as much by luck as judgement. I could not have garnered the little success I can boast had I been there is Sapphire, an assassin in the employ of my father; Meran, my former slave; and there is Jocasta, a sorceress of unexpected skill and strength. They all seem to care about me more than I probably deserve.

Still, the influence of the necromancers over the barbarians of the north is shattered and one of their most powerful members dead. There are armies of the city in the north and the enemy has been pacified. All is well, and Sumto assumes he has an easy time ahead of him...until that suddenly seems very unlikely indeed.

Possibly the most powerful passage in the book, and a viewpoint I agree wholeheartedly with.

It was a common theme of religions, or what little I had read of them. Worthless in life, worthy in spirit; weak in life, strong in the afterlife; self-sacrificing in life, rewarded in the afterlife; and so on and so on. Teachings designed to make people meek and obedient. Designed to make people sheep for wolves to prey upon; for, make no mistake, there will always be wolves who think of themselves as predators and other men as prey. Any man who teaches that meekness and suffering are virtues is not your friend, but a predator or tool of predators or, at best, merely a fool.

Superb, dark but fun fast paced fantasy. Such a shame an author like this does not get more recognition. The protagonist is just brilliant, flawed in the first book but becomes are harder meaner individual in this installment.

I cannot recommend this book enough, especially for those who enjoy first person dark fantasy.

After the fun The Last Amulet, I was very excited to read this one and after a good though somewhat repetitive first half the second half was less interesting for me though the narrative energy of the novel kept my interest - tons of zombies, scary sorcerers - and generally too much magic escalation

The story continues and our reluctant hero faces more challenges in his quest to just survive being him. Still hooked on the story and look forward to more. It's interesting that in these stories the bad guys are bad and the good guys are kinda bad. Not all of them mind you, but enough to keep Sumto on his toes.

Liked the first book enough to buy this one. It did not disappoint, and lead to me buying the next in the series within 30 seconds of finishing this one. Excellent characters all around. Love the story line. I am already hoping there are many more books in the series to come.
