With Cyb3Ru5 defeated, James is ready to get back to some good old-fashioned dungeon shenanigans. The experience left him shaken–but luckily, he now has friends to lean on.
Speaking of DCO, while James might feel like the main character at times, the game itself, and the developers behind it, think otherwise. During his stint as a pawn helping bring down the dangerous hacker group, a lot of upgrades to DCO were implemented without him. Now, James is diving headfirst into all of it!
New floors, new levels, and so much more, including a rematch against a certain winged lizard cult that Rue, ahem, the White Beast of Chaos, is chomping at the bit to take part in.
James is back where he is supposed to be—running his dungeon, hanging out with Rue, and sipping digitally rendered cocktails served by cybernetic penguins. He’s trying to forget his own unpleasant memories–and he's not the only one.
But DCO is full of distractions–and one new game mode, in particular, is set to keep James occupied for quite a while. In more ways than he could ever imagine....
Now, for the first time since its debut, James can finally run the dungeon himself.
Jonathan’s journey through life has been anything but slow. Being part of a military family, he moved across the world growing up, and having not learned his lesson, joined the Marine Corps right out of high school. This sent him on a whirlwind adventure, which even found him in the sands of Afghanistan. During all his travels, he found one thing always remained constant…he loved to read. Now, married and with life finally calming down a bit, he has begun to push his passion for literature even higher, aiming to give readers the kinds of books he has come to love with his own unique twist.
He has grown up in thousands of worlds, courtesy of not only literature and anime, but also his avid gaming life! Jonathan has spent countless hours on video games ranging from Final Fantasy to Pokémon to Guild Wars and WoW, while also enjoying tabletops such as D&D and Exalted.
Living in a game world isn’t enough for Jonathan though, and he has pushed to turn his own life into a classic RPG. On top of leveling up his writing and music abilities (he swears he is not a bard though!), he is currently learning the ancient art of blacksmithing, which places him at his forge working hot metal into blades on the weekends!
The characters come alive for me and I could hardly wait for the download so I could rejoin James, Rue, Alex, Zee and all the other players in Dungeon Core Online. And this book, well it's even better than the last one. I know I prolly said that for DCO3 too 😆. But that's because Jonathan Smidt is a word magi... and yes in this book these same characters have made such strong bonds to each other that they can feel free to open up and share their feelings. All the while James is upgrading his Dungeon, floor 6 and thus making his life in DCO the best it can be. Travis Baldree again delivers a perfectly nuanced performance for this fantastic book. So yeah go grab the audiobook and dive deep well at least to level 5. Because you'll be delighted to find plenty of fun, and pop-cultural references in these books. And level 6 well that's the treat saved for DCO6.
Here's a couple of quotes that I found amusing:
"It is not, for you to name this psy bear, once you have I shall protect you against all who bare you ill will..." the psy bear chuckled again. Great, James had a bear who had just told him a bear pun in the span of 5 seconds."
"What kinda sniper hits his own teammate." "The Halo kind."
"Sitting there was a leather bound book. A quick glance didn't give James the name of book but he did see authors name Brandon Sanderson."
This one was very poorly written compared to how fun the previous ones were. No one reads these for literary masterpieces but I like my junk food to at least taste good.
The dungeon core stuff is rushed / phoned in. The author even seemingly acknowledged it. Lots of hand waving, some awkwardly written/forced chapters that I guess were supposed to be character development with side characters.
Also, the character class choices amounted to the mc standing there watching others act. When he does get his moment we get a handwaved moment where the mc zones out and comes to after having allegedly done something amazing. It wasn't handled well at all.
Probably should have ended this series in book 3 if this is all that's left.
Love this series. The last quarter was a thrill ride from the inside of the dungeon, not the usual dungeon core perspective and it was an eye opening adventure. Before that, James finished his 6th floor and it's going to be a doozie as well as taking a side job with a 1st floor redo for adventurers with a death wish. Gotta love those demonic farm animals. This is a big change from Book 3 and while less intense it's a lot more fun. Makes you wonder what's going to happen in book 5!
The latest adventures of James and Rue are wonderful. I enjoy how Jonathan has continued to bring James into the know just a little more at a time! The story progression is superb without sacrificing the feelings that James has along with his hopes for not just his dungeon, but in his personal life as well. I am sad to think that the story is coming to a close, but I can't wait to see what is in store for James, Rue, and all the others in the conclusion!!!
This is the slice of life breather book, after all the stress James has been dealing with lately. That makes it my favorite. Some light PVP, dungeon building, cool abilities and gear, real world social interactions, and James and Rue even get to experience DCO as players. It's a downright cozy video game experience!
If this was meant to set up the last book in the series, it failed miserably. No real dungeon building, quick brush overs on lackluster events, and no story advancement. This book was missing everything from the last three that made them entertaining.
I'm truly enjoying this series, the craziness, the characters, and all. Of course I read the epilogue, even with Mr. Smidt's warning. So now I'm on the edge of my seat, waiting for book 5. Lol :)
It has now gotten to the point where I almost don’t care about James outside life and just want him to go ahead and transfer his mind to DCO to be with Rue and live there full time.
A lot more dungeon building, new events, and battles, with a hint about something going on outside the online world. Can't wait for the next in series!
