The Moosewood Collective is a crew of fourteen women and five men. Some of us moonlight from Moosewood, and among us we have a broad range of interests and avocations. Our group comprises musicians, singers, dancers, actors, performers, mediators, meditators, activists, teachers, trainers, consultants, writers, gardeners, editors, poets, artists, quilters, calligraphers, martial arts instructors and enthusiasts, health advocates, parents, grandparents, good cooks, and really good eaters.
Moosewood cookbooks have several charms. Number one is that they cook food that is the type of food I both like and the type I cook (mostly). They are mostly vegetarian or can easily be amended. And this one has recipes for when you need a lot of food. Not all recipes simply scale so this cookbook is eminently helpful. Recommended.
There are a lot of delicious-looking recipes in this book, but I never cook for 24 or more. If I did, it would be an excellent resource! Plus, there aren't any pictures, either, which I think is a must in a cookbook
This book was my favorite tool the year I had to cook for my house of 40 people once a week. The recipes are vegetarian-focused, delicious, fresh, and not too difficult. Many were flexible enough to be made dairy, nut, and coconut-free, to suit the dietary needs of most people. Most were based on 24 servings, so I could just double the recipe, and always had plenty of food for 40 people. That alone saved about 30 minutes of planning time (a recipe from a normal cookbook had to be multiplied by 7 or 8... try that math!) Each recipe also has a list of tools you will need to use. Knowing which size pan to use, and if you have enough pans to prepare your meal, before you start, is immensely helpful when cooking in quantity. Overall, a fantastic book when cooking for 15+ people.
The only vegetarian cookbook for a crowd--great stuff. I think there is more basic food than what I would hope that Moosewood at this point in their existense would be able to put together. But what is here is very reasonable (still suffers from the chronic under-spicing that is a hallmark of the original Moosewood cookbook (which is the publication this most closely resembles).
I was excited to find this book especially designed for feeding more than 24 people! It's tough to find recipes that are designed for this number -- doubling and tripling just doesn't always work.
I love recipe books that cater to a crowd--it's just what I do every day, so they work for me. This stuff is yummy and healthy, and relatively cheap since there's no meat.
