From Erik Slader, the creator of the Epik Fails of History podcast (and coauthor of the Epic Fails books series), comes a bold new vision of the future.
2299 is a sci-fi noir (novella) about a detective on the edge of the abyss. While investigating a cold case on Vanaheim, a space station orbiting Neptune, Desmond Faust finds himself ensnared in a web of lies and murder. The closer he gets to discovering the truth, the more aware he becomes that he might not leave this place alive….
A solid representation of the Detective Noir genre, but with a twist
Do you like gumshoe detectives? Do you like space stations? Surprise! I have a book for you!
But seriously, this is a easy in a "really solid cliche but not in a bad way" read. Theres not a lot of time to dwell within a scene, and nothing overstayed its welcome. Some contemporary callbacks (VCRs anyone) but with enough of a universe it feels natural.
It's only a hundred possess or so, but a good sophomore release and the first in the sci-fi realm for the author
I found this book in a small coffee shop in Jacksonville under a little sign that read “Local author”. Immediately, I checked for a signature- lo and behold, there was a signature in every book! I bought a copy, brought it home, and began reading.
The novella brought up a sort of nostalgia for the sort of sci-fi books I’d read in my earlier teenage years/ childhood. I was consistently engaged in every chapter and created my own web of theories alongside the crime-fighting detective. Overall, I enjoyed this book and would absolutely recommend for a quick, sweet read.
Wonderful Novella that combines the grit of an old time Noir with sci-fi futuristic space setting. Desmond Faust is our hero in this search for a missing person that becomes way more than that. Slader creates a comfortable reading experience and uses inclusive language recognizing a more hopeful and equitable future right along side the dark menacing evil that still plagues society. The power hungry and the greedy still manipulating things. This book is short and sweet. Locally written here in my home town so it carries a special space on my book shelves (figuratively, it will go under S for Slader actually). Order this one from the Amazon today!
A gripping science fiction noir with atmosphere, mystery, and tension woven into every page. Desmond Faust is a compelling detective, and the setting, an eerie space station orbiting Neptune, adds a haunting edge to the story. 2299 pulls you into a web of secrets and keeps you guessing until the end.
