When Jackson discovers where his family’s food went, he would discover another kind of family, a friend and how to cope with the blows that life can deal and he owed it all to a loving mother protecting and caring for her children the best she could. He would learn that life and loss and love were the same no matter if one was human or not.

James Agee Jr.’s SCATTER SCRATCH is as heartwarming as it is heartbreaking as a young boy is faced with a loss that he didn’t understand and never expected. As adults, we forget that children are wiser, yet more innocent than we realize, we forget to let them know about many of the painful events in life. This short story, geared for middlegrade readers is simply beautiful and beautifully simple in its telling.

Mr. Agee has captured the innocence of a child, their youthful curiosity and their ability to grasp reality, having done so in such a way that Jackson becomes real, his point of view is that of a child and we feel his loss as reality suddenly becomes an understanding beyond his years.

A little bittersweet, but so well-written, this one deserves to be read by all. Truly a hidden gem that would make a wonderful family read.

I received a complimentary copy from James Agee Jr.! This is my honest and voluntary review.

Scatter Scratch:
The story starts with a raccoon biting little Jackson’s finger. For some time, food was going missing in the house and Jackson had had enough and wanted to find out what was taking these items out the house. When Jackson does come across the animal, he’s bitten and is taken to hospital in case he has “rabies”.

Soon enough, we meet the raccoon again - but this time he’s given a name: Scatter Scratch. Jackson and Scatter become friends (i guess you could call it). Jackson gives Scatter food for itself and its babies.

Midway through the story, Jackson loses someone close to him, and his comfort is Scatter Scratch and her babies.

This short, children’s story is an incredible read. It has a sweet ending and i could imagine a parent reading this to their child before bed. I loved it so much!!
