Blissful Masquerade: Ruthless Desires, Book 1

Rate this book
After walking away from her toxic boyfriend, Wren finds herself lonely and wondering if good men only exist in fiction. But at a Valentine's Day masquerade ball, she spots them—the three men who meet every week at the coffee shop she works at. The ones who've always looked at her like she's the most interesting thing on the whole planet. She figures they won't recognize her, but there's no way they couldn't—not when they all feel pulled to her in a way they never have before. While she's planning on enjoying herself at the ball before going home to her empty bed, these three men have different plans. They each steal a dance with her, and by the end of the night, they're all left to face the one truth they've been Not a single one of them can resist her. And now, they may not have to.

Blissful Masquerade is the first book in the Ruthless Desires Series. It's a dark MMMF polyamorous/why choose romance novella that contains a lot of heat, some kink, swearing, and violence.

i wanted to give this novella five stars for the trigger warning alone:
This story contains some sensitive content, including swearing, a mention of body shaming, violence, a mention of murder, graphic sex scenes, bondage, and degradation. If you think any of those will affect you negatively, I recommend steering clear of this novella. There’s no shame in it! Your mental health is more important. Please take care of yourselves, my friends.

some authors can be very passive aggressive, vague and all around weird when it’s comes to trigger warnings. it’s always a red flag when i open a book and the trigger warning has this almost taunting smarminess to it that’s like “if you can’t handle any of this, this book isn’t for you”. im immediately put off. or when the author is vague af and just uses “if you have triggers, then maybe this isn’t for you”. gotta give me more than just “triggers”. it’s a super vague, umbrella term.

so, i always appreciate it when an author puts in the effort with the TWs. some people might not give a fuck at all and that’s great because it works for you. im not built that way, and i need to know the specifics just so i can mentally prepare for what im about to get myself into. and the way this author phrased the TW, acknowledging her readers’ mental health just had me 🥺🥺 because that’s why i have always firmly believed in authors specifying TWs since i think it’s just respectful of authors to be mindful towards their readers... you know, the people who support them to earn a living.

it also shows me what kind of person the author is and it’s nice to know im supporting a genuinely nice person. nothing more disappointing than finding out an author you admired and who’s work you enjoyed, turns out to be pretty shitty.

so , honestly, this author already had me at the preface. and my other fave thing about this???

✨consent✨

we love to see it, baby.

it was a big theme in the book but it wasn’t forced or overly emphasised. it was naturally woven into the dialogue without it sounding too preachy and manufactured, but just a genuinely authentic aspect of the characters.

and then, the characters were super fun! they managed to each hold my attention and were all individual which i think can be hard with a RH. but Rhett (my fave), Oliver and Elliot were all unique and fleshed out as much as they could be in a novella. while Wren was charming, endearing and sweet. the progression of their dynamic as a four and as individual pairs was natural and genuine. just all around fun and cute vibes, honestly.

also RH where the guys interact sexually and romantically, too, just hit different, tbh. you gotta suspend your disbelief with RH at the best of times, but i find it even more hard to believe that you’ve got 3+ guys all with the same girl and you’re telling me they never cross swords?🤺🤺🤺 not once?

so ultimately, i loved the dynamic between Elliot, Oliver and Rhett. they were so soft and protective of each other. their bond without Wren was beautiful and it only strengthened with her. that’s my fave type of dynamic in a RH, where the guys already have a strong bond between them before the heroine is introduced. it just makes everything more believable and satisfying.

i didn’t realise that there were more books after this one so im pumped omg. gonna go read the next one ASAP. this definitely pleasantly surprised me.

3.3 stars.
This was simple and short and mostly just smut, which I am totally ok with.
I just sort of wanted more.
There was a lot of things left unsaid, and it made it feel like it was left unfinished.

The sex was steamy and I enjoyed it, but again, I feel like a lot was left out.
I got interested in this book from a single line on TikTok and I liked that line. There’s a tiny bit of praise/degradation kink, and a bit of light bondage in this, but I guess I was just hoping for more.
Everything just felt super surface level and light, but there were so many hints at a deeper, darker thing hiding under the surface that I wish we’d gotten more of.

I don’t know.
I just wanted more from it than it was giving me.

Blissful Masquerade is the second book I’ve read by Elira Firethorn and I have to say, I love her writing style. She did an amazing job on this one. I’m completely already in love with this series.

“I swear, good men only exist in books. Specifically, books written by women.”

This is book one of Ruthless Desires series, this is a dark, erotic romance book, also reverse harem/MMMF. The three main male characters have been together for ten years before they add Wren into the relationship. I am loving the dynamic of these four together. Elliot is my favorite though :) He just speaks to me.

“Did you not see the way they were looking at you earlier? Let them hear that you’re satisfied.”

I really did enjoy reading this and am excited to continue reading this series. The four MC’s are Wren (female), Elliot, Rhett and Oliver. Elliot is my favorite so far but the others aren’t far behind.

“Let’s get you a distraction, then. Me and the guys can keep your mind occupied.”

Please be aware of triggers before reading a book. I shared the list below.

TW:
Emotional: swearing, cheating, anxiety/running anxious thoughts, a mention of body shaming, internalized fatphobia (once), death, and police corruption. Physical: violence (fists, guns) and a mention of murder. Sexual: dominance and submission, bondage, blindfolding, impact play, edging and orgasm control, over stimulation, and degradation.

Happy Reading 🖤

“The whole day is a blissful masquerade of pretending that we’re more to each other than we are.”

This is a steamy, why choose/polyam (mmmf) book, that takes place over one weekend, and is told through 4 pov's.
The overall writing in this was great, and I loved how realistic the content was in regards to how they handled some of the everyday scenarios, aftercare with sex, and body image.
The trio of male main characters were so intriguing. Don't make me choose just one, because I want them all!! Playful, nerdy, broody, into books, always wearing suits, and extremely caring?! Say no more.

While the smut is at the definite forefront, there was still a bit of underlying plot in this short novella to provide depth, while also leaving you with things to interpret, question, or wonder about (which would be great to dive into deeper for future books in a possible series).

I really appreciated how - while this was fast paced - it wasn't entirely an insta-love situation. The characters have had interactions and small conversations every week for months at the coffee shop where she works, which made the fast progression slightly more believable.

All of the men are swoon worthy for different reasons:
Rhett — I love how reserved he is. He is the type of character that won’t show much affection, but once he finds the one he cares for?! You’ll know, he’ll know. It’s that special type of intimacy.
Oliver — the way he is so playful and teasing! I instantly had an appreciation for his character when he made Wren feel at ease for simply being human. She was having self body shaming issues for being bloated from eating, but the way he explained it, of them taking care of her, was so well done.
Elliot — he is so observant and caring. He was definitely more prominent of the three mmc!

Elliot: love
Oliver: princess
Rhett: sweetheart

I also highly enjoyed the element of withholding major physical descriptors for the characters. This leaves the reader to be able to interpret and envision the characters specifically to how they would want them.

I guess you could say the ending left in a slight cliffhanger? But I honestly loved it and wouldn't be bothered if that's how it was left. To me, it was the perfect sweet spot between being an open ending that's left to be interpreted by the reader, or, the perfect set up for a possible continuation of the story.
edited to add: at the time of writing this, there was only one book released haha

Things left unanswered:
- Are the men bi? They don't openly disclose that information. At first, I was a little caught off guard by the intimate relationship between the men, but I actually really enjoyed it and I would LOVE a story just on Elliot, Oliver, and Rhett - their extremely long friendship, how it came to be, how they decided to be more than friends?! Their living situation? Whatever the case, I will eat that up quick.
- the matching tattoos - I want to know the whole story behind that.
- Rhett's sister.
- What is their job?! Why does it involve guns?

Included:
- Wren’s coworker/best friend is queer
- minor bdsm
- safe sex, and consensual at every step, every day, no matter what!! This was so important and highly appreciated
- realistic after care of sex, and mentioned on page multiple times - I LOVED THIS
- characters that are into books and reading
- dealing with a toxic ex-partner
- minor degradation kink
- masquerade party
- will do everything/burn the world for her, to protect her, to make her feel safe and at ease
- book title is included in the book - I LOVE WHEN THIS HAPPENS

“If he puts me in even the mildest of reading slumps, I’ll fucking kill him.”

“I swear, good men only exist in books. Specifically, books written by women.”

“I hope you find some time to read this week, Wren. I know it makes you happy.”

“The way Oliver throws his head back when he laughs. Rhett’s calm façade that never lets up. And the habit Elliot has developed of running his thumb over his bottom lip. God, it’s so fucking hot.”

“Whoever dared to make her feel insecure about herself is going to pay - dearly.”

W: “Why do you care about me so much?”
E: “Who are you comparing me to? Because the real question isn’t why I care so much. It’s why the men who had you before me didn’t care.”

This is a 5 star as a joke book, but a one star for actual reading. It's written clearly by someone with very little sexual experience. It's weird and just kinda creepy. Why do we not acknowledge why these three men live together. Why don't we talk about their work. Why are we not leaving this dude who beat the shit out of an ex. Yes he "deserved it" but violence is never the answer.

I know it's fiction. I know it's meant to be a dark fantasy type of book. But it's just written that poorly and that oddly enough without very little lead into the relationships and sex that you really just can't enjoy it. The main character is an actual idiot and really just said "yeah lemme date these 3 dudes who weirdly live together and have an inner romantic relationship already and lemme just not know anything about them that's totally cool because I'm getting screwed around the clock and they bought me gifts, weh."

It's almost....too guilty pleasure. There's absolutely no level of realness to make this desirable by any sane adult. Maybe a teenager, that shouldn't even be reading it.

Wow. This really is something. I liked the men. But the female MC..... she's really cringy annoying and her personality traits are as follows:
Insecure
Crying all the time for the dumbest reasons. She's basically a tear factory.
And turned on.
Let's now forget awkward to a degree that gives me secondhand embarrassment. Seesh.
If I read the second book then I'll do so only for the guys.

I'm not going to lie, I'm kind of disappointed with how this turned out🤷‍♀️.

There were some nice scenes and smut- but the story as a whole just felt quite abrupt and didn't really flow well for me.

It was alright.

Why is it always the pick me bitches that gets all 3 men? When is it going to be my turn?? I enjoyed this in one setting late night reading, perfect for reading slumps i will be definitely reading book 2!!

I went into it thinking Elliot going to be my favorite but the Warner line cringed me! (Ifykyk) I know Rhett is everyone’s favorite (he is your typical grumpy man) but y’all sleeping on my boy Oliver. Book 2 will confirm who is my favorite i guess!

3 is a magic number.

4.5⭐

I wanted an entertaining RH but I wasn't expecting to like Blissful Masquerade this much. It's a novella so it was a quick read but I wanted it to last forever because the quality of this book.

First off, the consent. Please, that was the best part, asking for permission, making sure the FMC is comfortable at all times, making sure she understands that stopping them and saying no is totally fine. That got me good.

Second off, the relationship between the guys. I won't say much to avoid spoilers but usually RH are all about the FMC, she's special and they gravitate towards her which they do here too but the point is, I loved the connection between the guys even more than the one with the FMC.

All that being said, there's something that bothered me. The author left a note  at the beginning of the book saying that she won't describe her characters to give the reader free reign to imagine them as they wish, the problem is, my imagination is broken. I need specific descriptions and teeny tiny details for each character to differentiate between them or I'll be confused like in here because I couldn't tell apart Oliver and Elliot. They seemed like carbon copies of each other and could pass by as one person. Then again, I was warned and it's probably more of a me problem.

Overall, it was entertaining, spicy and so much fun. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to try this subgenre because honestly, it's the best written one that I've read so far.

This was such a great book! I’d been recommend this book a few times and am glad I finally picked it up.

Although this book spans over a few days it felt so well paced and was such an easy read. The smut was great and the plot didn’t feel too over the top which often happens with shorter books. The best thing about the book was how all the characters reacted/said things that I would have said in that situation that made me relate and form attachments with the characters!
I’m diving straight into the next book!

I read the first two books in this series and it all started off pretty enjoyable but it got very drawn out at a point. By the end of the second book I just didn't even feel like moving on to the next, especially when I realized there were a lot more to come totaling over 1000 pages. The characters were fun, the sex was hot, but honestly they didn't need that much page time. I might come back one day too see how it all ends but for now I'm calling it quits.

This book isn’t a literary masterpiece nor did it change my life, but you can bet all your money on the fact, that I just devoured it like a feral gremlin who discovered a stash of forbidden snacks!

Listen, sometimes you don’t need poetic prose or groundbreaking storytelling. Sometimes, you just need vibes. And this book delivered hard!
The plot was minimal but functional, and the smut scenes definitely were plenty and gooood.

Sure, the writing wasn’t perfect, but honestly? I was too busy grinning like an idiot to care. This book made me happy, and at the end of the day, isn’t that what counts? 🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️ If I wanted something deep and philosophical, I would go to read Nietzsche or Tolstoy…

Am I the only one whose fav from the trio is Oliver? Because I feel I'm in the minority 😅
(i mean, dont get me wrong, i get the rhett hype but...im too old to deal with that much broodiness lol)

This was mostly smut with the promise of something a bit darker underneath it all...And for the most part, I liked it - the smut was great, completely up my alley (though it did get kinda repetitive after a while) 🤗

“I swear, good men only exist in books. Specifically, books written by women.”

- Impact Play
- Edging
- Orgasm Control
- Degradation
- Consent- Always making sure each other were ok
- Dominance and Submission
- Bondage
- Violence
- After Care and on Multi Occasions
- Toxic Ex-Partner (FMC)
- Mention of Death
- MMFM
- MM- hoping we get much more and see the love between the boys
- Characters who read

I decided to give the series ago after I saw a quote on Booktok that happens in book 4. I loved that the main 4 characters weren't given a physical description, so they were able to appear how you wanted them to. The 3 men in my mind were multiple Henry Cavill's.

Wren works in a coffee shop and every Friday, 3 men in suits (Rhett, Oliver and Elliott) appear like clockworks. Wren has always been drawn to them and the men at Wren, even if Wren didn't realise. When they see each other at a Valentines Masquerade, they decide to make a move. Elliott makes out with Wren while Rhett and Oliver watch. When they are back home. She agrees they can join...

The men were so kind and very big on consent and always making sure each other were ok. I was expecting it to be a lot darker. But I still loved the novella and ate everything up. Can't wait to read the next part.

i have no words for how i feel abt this book
it had everything and it served
wren is the definition of mommy, and i love the woman so much it hurts my heart
elliot was always so cautious with her and ready to let her go even if it hurt him
oliver, my baby olly, i fucking adore this man, he is so cute and literally the bestest friend anyone could ask for
and rhett, my husband, he had a rough start but i loved how in the end he was able to sleep again IN WRENS BED NON OTHER
i love the relationship between the three guys so much, and them thinking that wren fits in so perfectly with them is the cutest
