Andy Rivera specializes in doing the bare minimum. That is, unless, it involves making his all-star, older brother, Xavier, look bad. But, after Xavier suffers a crippling injury during the homecoming football game, Andy is so shaken with regret that he escapes into the world of middle school wrestling. And, when old habits threaten to sabotage these new challenges, Andy comes face-to-face with a Major Decision.
An excellent, brisk read about a young middle-school student who joins a wrestling team and has to make a "major decision" on how he wants to move forward in his life. Does he continue to hang out with the negative influences he once used to call his friends, or does he choose the tougher, more athletic future of wrestling on his middle school team? That question kept my attention for the short 200 word story that I honestly couldn't put down. It's hard to find books that young males might enjoy, but Major Decision does just that. I can't wait to share this story with my own students. I think they'll love it! I sure did.
This novel is wonderful for readers of any age. What begins as a story about sibling rivalry and a football game gone wrong, quickly becomes a lesson about life values. Any reader can relate to the main character, Andy Rivera, as he goes through and overcomes so many challenges. It is like watching a match unfold on the mats as you read Andy's story unravel. In this captivating story about discovering personal drive and morals it is easy to get lost in the novel.
