Rate this book

A very lucid work in which Kaczynski demonstrates the essential futility of the very sort of act that infamously got him sentenced to life in prison. Moreover, he shows that the fundamental errors he made are repeated, in one form or another, by most radicals and activists today. While I disagree with Kaczynski's analysis of modern society, which concludes that the cause of all our woes is technological, this article is tactical and so largely evades this matter. The insights presented here are more than capable of application to Marxist ends, and many Marxists would do well to heed his advice. The critique of leftism presented here may not compare to Amadeo Bordiga's, but it's refreshing to see similar arguments articulated in new language. It helps one approach familiar ideas from new angles since we're not so primed to assume we 'know' what the author means.

Ted probably could have done the world some real good if he wrote more like this and sent fewer fucking mail bombs, but we all make mistakes. Some uh bigger than others.

I would give it a higher rating, if not the way biotechnology issue was discussed. Kaczynski gave us a very simplified overview, which I was slightly disappointed with. It treated a wide field of science as solely cloning, agriculture and food industry, when it's a much more varied sector. Attacking biotechnology would cause more harm than good, as it would for example refer to medicine production. With that being said, I believe we should look for a different "place where it hurts" to hit.

those ten points explains that effective activism should attack the modern capitalism, or technical-industrial system "values that are inconsistent with values of the system" or in other words explaining current problems in terms of modern-capitalism/tech-industrial system, otherwise the system bounce back the hitting piece of rubber.

Insightful stuff from old uncle Ted. Might be worth reading more into the Occupy movement and its assassination by the propaganda industry; Kaczynski didn't seem to feel globalization is a major issue the system can't concede from, but OWS got hit very hard by the system at the time. Definitely inspires further study.

granted this essay was written awhile ago and biotechnology has now influenced a great deal of people's lives.
the fact he writes shit like "obviously i am not condoning this because if i did this could not leave the prison im writing from" or "violence, and by violence i mean peaceful legal protests 👍" is fucking hilarious though

If a man punches you, you can’t defend yourself by hitting back at his fist, because you can’t hurt the man that way. In order to win the fight, you have to hit him where it hurts. That means you have to go behind the fist and hit the sensitive and vulnerable parts of the man’s body.
Suppose a bulldozer belonging to a logging company has been tearing up the woods near your home and you want to stop it. It is the blade of the bulldozer that rips the earth and knocks trees over, but it would be a waste of time to take a sledgehammer to the blade. if you spent a long, hard day working on the blade with the sledge, you might succeed in damaging it enough so that it became useless. But, in comparison with the rest of the bulldozer, the blade is relatively inexpensive and easy to replace. The blade is only the “fist” with which the bulldozer hits the earth. To defeat the machine you must go behind the “fist” and attack the bulldozers vital parts. The engine, for example, can be ruined with very little expenditure of time and effort by means well known to many radicals.
