A novel about a town that falls apart when one sheriff's plans are followed too rigorously. Paxton and his mother move to Lost Creek to escape his violent father. Use of the Internet is frowned upon in this strange little town, where the local sheriff has made detailed plans for calamities from zombie wars to holocausts. When Paxton, an avid gamer, has finally settled into a life without the Internet, calamity strikes, and he and his mother are suddenly at the forefront of the action.
When I first started delving into this book, I can honestly say that I had a twinge of trepidation. I am one of those that think the zombie genre has been overplayed the last few years and was not sure what this novel had to offer. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised. What starts out as something reminiscent of the 80's movie Night of the Creeps, steadily turns into a cross between William Goldman's Lord of the Flies with a mixture of an episode that you would see in The Twilight Zone. What really sticks out about this novel is how plausible this would be in todays modern day society. That, in itself, is a horror tale that I hope will not be told. I do not want to give away spoilers, but if you are expecting this novel to be like a trek through The Walking Dead, you may be in for a shock. A fast, paced and engaging read. Check it out!
