A short novella sized compilation of five mixed short stories. The stories are a hodgepodge of humor, military science fiction, space opera, and fantasy.
In "Dreamer", A cadet needs to grow up fast when she has to fight for her life when her ship is boarded.
In "Soar", Refugees trying to escape religious persecution end up sharing an escape pod with their sectarian oppressors.
In "Last Deployment", space marines go for an extended sleep in their stasis chambers. When they are revived there is a new world waiting for them.
In "Immortal", A man accepts a contract from aliens for immortality.
In "Heroes", the military unable to raise an army clones a highly decorated hero with unintended consequences.
After growing up in the small town of Onalaska in Wisconsin I contracted a serious case of gypsy disease. For the next 21 years I traveled all over the world with the USAF. The experiences I garnered are the seeds for many of my stories. The experiences from the numerous deployments I had in the Air Force has given me enough fodder for stories for the rest of my life. Although I started writing military science fiction trying to emulate my favorite author John Ringo. I recently started writing horror and was a 2019 Dragon Awards finalist. In 2020 I'll be trying a new genre.
I liked this book. Started off with a great story in a story. Loved the ending. Then it slowed a bit but was still good. Great stories in the end also. Fun read.
This is a nice, fairly quick collection of sci fi short stories, covering a variety of people, places and topics, from a cadet on a training cruise having to deal with armed boarders, to aliens escaping a battle in a lifepod, but the aliens turn out to be different than expected. All in all, very creative and I could see some seeds for future stories coming out of this. Doug Tisdale does a good job bringing the stories to life, covering a wide variety of genders and personalities, as well as species.
I was voluntarily given this review audiobook by the author.
The author continues his unique story telling that I came to love from the Gray Panther series. I enjoyed the book It was a great page turner. It was entertaining and filled with turns when least expected. I could not put it down and ended up finishing it in a single day. I am looking forward to the next book in the Gray Panther series I received an ARC for this for an honest review.
