SQUID Files and the Case of Stolen Dreams

Rate this book
Strange things are so common in Crescent Hollow that no one questions them anymore, except for the special few at the Everhart Academy for Extraordinary Youth. Students falling asleep in the middle of class isn't unusual, but when their nightmares cross over from the dream world, SQUID goes into action.

Having been years since the school had Seers of the Quite Unusual, the newbies face this dangerous disturbance with little to go on. They must discover who is behind the wave of nightmares and how to stop them before the real world and the dream world are one in the same. One thing they know for sure is that things from the dream world don't play by our rules.

Read it in a day. The author has some books for older ages but since this was the newest I thought I'd give it a try. There are kids in this school that can see strange things that the adults can't so they have to be the ones to stop anything bad coming their way and to solve the mysteries. The librarian is sassy and there more of a guide so I like that the kids really lead the story. Sophia is definitely my favorite. She is smart and is always questioning everything and she is friends (or used to be) with her polar opposite Toby. He's never serious and is ready to believe anything he sees. They are both invited to the group after they are the only ones that see a mysterious boy jump the fence. The case they're solving for this book is about dreams coming to life from suspiciously sleepy students. It was really fun and had a harry potter kind of vibe but not as heavy or complex. It was a light read that had twists and jokes and characters I could really relate to even though I'm not a kid anymore.

This book has a classic feel from my childhood. I grew up in the 90’s reading goosebumps, animorphs, and other fun adventures. Squid files has a fun tram mystery vibe. The characters are unique, like-able, and I cared about their wellbeing. The plot has some fun twists, and I always like an intelligent villain which the author does well. Strong antagonist make for the most intriguing storylines.

I will say, as a nostalgic feeling, but new read, I needed to get back to my youthful imagination to truly immerse myself in the novel. It’s definitely YA, and when I accepted that, it became a fun ride. I’d recommend for any middle or high school age, or any adult if you want a fun YA. Two thumbs up!
