When you’re famous, indulgence can be as dangerous as playing with fire.

From the bedroom to the courtroom comes a tale of lust, lies, and a life on the line. Where a night of passion becomes a fight for freedom–whose side will you choose?
This was an interesting read for me because I really didn’t know what to think when I started it. The story starts off with a bang (a steamy bang, that is) but it’s clear that something intense is going to happen. Turns out, a woman named Jade accuses a man named Cayden of inappropriate sexual behaviour.
But here’s the crazy thing about this book. We’re told about the entire sexual encounter, nothing is held back, yet I spent the entire story wondering if Cayden is actually guilty. There were such intense unreliable narrator vibes, even though there was nothing pointing to him being one. I thought that aspect of the story was cool.
I was back and forth on how I felt about everyone throughout the whole book, and I still don’t know how I feel. I felt that the author did a good job of moving away from predictable characters and put more of a focus on the legal aspects of being accused of a crime. Overall, this was an intriguing read!
Please be aware that sensitive sexual topics are discussed throughout the book.
Thank you so much to Casey Harper and Book Influencers for a gifted copy and payment in exchange for my review!
(SA trigger warning) Don’t get me wrong this book started off VERY good! The narration was on point and the plot was captivating . I think what this lacked for me personally was a reasonable climax. I suspected a more dramatic/ appropriate closure between Jade and Cayden but it seems like everything happens off scene. The first half of the book definitely gave 5 stars but the whole thing completely? 3.5 ⭐️🥴
Okay well the first few chapters of the book had me reeling... There was so much back and forth even though he recounted everything that happened, I was still doubting it. I think listening to the audiobook helped me stay interested. I do believe that Jade was just upset that she was rejected and decided to file against him due to her comment about him being a "celebrity". Tough situations!

But the truth is shrouded in ambiguity: is Cayden the perpetrator of a heinous crime, or is Jade weaving a web of revenge?
Descent into Doubt by Casey Harper plunges readers into a riveting narrative brimming with passion and deception, reminiscent of the suspense found in films like 'Basic Instinct' and 'Wild Things,' with a narrative complexity akin to John Grisham's legal dramas. Cayden emerges as a generally sympathetic character, yet Harper skillfully unravels the narrative, leaving readers oscillating between doubt and sympathy, a testament to her narrative skill. The novel deftly transitions into a courtroom drama, maintaining engagement and suspense in a setting that can often veer into tedium. Much like Grisham, Harper enlivens these scenes with the same fervor she applies to the more intimate moments of the story. Casey Harper crafts a complex web of lust, betrayal, and legal intrigue that keeps readers on the edge of their seats, challenging them to unravel the truth from a tapestry of deceit. The novel's strength lies in its thrilling plot or compelling characters and its ability to engage and entertain without compromising on narrative depth. As you turn the final pages, the story leaves a lingering impact, prompting reflection on the elusive nature of truth and the multifaceted human experience.
Descent into Doubt is a testament to the gripping allure of courtroom dramas and psychological thrillers, making it a compelling read for those who cherish a well-crafted story that resonates beyond its final words.

One of the novel's strongest themes is the power of perception and how it can shape reality. The suspenseful narrative raises a thought-provoking question: "Who is telling the truth, and what will that mean for Cayden?"

𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: This was a fun Legal/Psychological thriller that dives into how a passionate night of romance leads to accusations of rape. Our main character, Cayden, has a steamy one night stand with a woman named Jade who he has been flirtatious with online. When the pair finally meet up the night seems to be just what Cayden needed, that is until Jade accuses him of rape and soon Cayden finds his life spiraling out of control. One thing is certain, Cayden demands his innocence and will fight for it to the end. Unfortunately, things get even worse after Cayden fails the polygraph test that the police give him. The underlying question here is what really happened that night?? Who is telling the truth? How can Cayden prove his innocence? I really enjoyed this fast paced, twisty thriller that weaves a tale full of lust, sex, lies, and secrets. The author does a great job at building the tension throughout, leaving the reader at the edge of their seat dying to know the truth of what really happened between Cayden and Jade on that night. As the reader, I found myself continuously changing my mind about Cayden and his innocence or guilt, and I loved that the author had the ability to make me question everything. All thought there were a few plot twists that were predictable, overall this was an enjoyable, fast paced, suspenseful read that hooked me in right away. I am anxiously awaiting for book 2! Pick this one up for an epic battle between truth vs. deception that will leave you questioning everything.

This was a really fast paced read that brought us right into Cayden’s trouble from the beginning! I loved that it didn’t take long to see what happened and what went wrong. I loved the title and the cover too because it really made sense, especially by the end of the story. I, too, began to doubt Cayden’s version of events - after all, his is the only POV we get as the reader, so we never really get to see inside Jade, his accuser’s, head and hear her thoughts. I managed to read this all in one day so that should tell you how fast paced it is! I can’t wait to see what happens in book 2!
This legal thriller was as unputdownable as it was stressful. Following the MeToo movement there have been an overabundance of thrillers centered around sexual assault claims, but most of the ones I have read have been written from the perspective of the accuser - typically a woman. Descent into Doubt shows us the perspective of an accused man fighting to prove his innocence. I really appreciated this perspective. We have all heard about false accusations like what had happened to Johnny Depp, and this book dives deeper into the psychological ramifications of these scenarios.
I wont lie, as a rape survivor I found certain aspects of Cayden's inner monologue hard to stomach and parts of the book were really rough. There was a lack of emotion and conversations felt stilted, though I feel that's more due to this being a debut thriller rather than the author's lack of care for the subject matter. I really enjoyed Cayden's female friendships, and seeing him develop through the story.
Honestly I am dying to talk to some other reviewers about this one, I foresee this being a divisive book! If you like fast paced legal thrillers that span from the bedroom to the courtroom and decide to pick it up shoot me a message so we can chat!
This was an intriguing and thought provoking psych thriller that tells the story of what it’s like to be the man that was wrongly accused of rape. The book started off with a bang and lots of spice and then took a deep dark turn into the wrong side of the #metoo movement. I found it very interesting and a good solid read, that really does make you think about both how each party could have a different understanding or viewpoint of what really happened, and then the straight evil behind a woman abusing her #metoo right and falsely accusing someone just out of spite – which was the latter in this case. It was really shattering for the MC, who was a public figure as a TV news reporter, to have his good image and whole world completely shattered by this one accusation. It also showed how despite knowing he did not do what he was accused of, he started to think about how things might have been perceived from her end and even started to doubt himself. After finding himself not indicted, thinking he could return to how things were, he quickly realizes who much this completely changed his thinking. Definitely an entertaining read that would be a good one to discuss at a book club.
TV news reporter, Cayden Chase has no problem meeting women due to his fame, wealth and popularity. However, after a one night stand with a women named Jade, his whole life takes a dramatic turn when Jade accuses him of rape.
I’m always apprehensive when reading a book from an author who is new to me and for this book, I needn’t worry!
I devoured this in one sitting on my flight to Porto. The character development was amazing and the story grips you immediately. It almost feels like a true story as the plot refers to real like celebrity cases.
At the end of the book, there is a QR code which you scan and it takes you to a website (I did have to do this after landing)! With the ongoing trend of mixed media being included in books, I thought this was a refreshing idea. There wasn’t much on this link, but it hinted of there being more in the future.
This is the first book of the trilogy and I cannot wait to see where the author takes book 2 and 3. That is of course, when the author gets round to writing them 😂
If you were enthralled by Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's courtroom drama, you will love this book! All about a fictional news anchor, Cayden Chase, who goes on a date with a woman named Jade and ends up on the wrong side of a rape investigation, this story is incredibly realistic and frightening.
No, he didn’t do it. But, no, the world didn’t believe him. Not at first.
Obviously I don’t want to give away the whole plot…because it’s really good…but suffice it to say this book was twisted in all the right ways. A modern nightmare for any man to experience.
I really liked how it shone a light on how quick a life can be destroyed by false charges and how slow (or stagnant) justice can be to deter these things from happening. It was a story that definitely needs to be out there and I flew through it in a couple of sittings. Feeling bad for Cayden, I was hoping the book would end happily…. You’ll just have to read it for yourself to see if it did.
✨ 𝗥𝗘𝗩𝗜𝗘𝗪 ✨ Please read trigger warnings/quick takes before proceeding with the review. This story will have you quite literally in doubt for much of it. Cayden Chase is a minor celebrity health correspondent on a local news channel. He meets and hooks up with Jade in an explosive, steamy opening encounter that soon dissolves into a r@pe alligation.
The entire story is in Cayden’s POV so automatically were on his side, sympathizing with him getting falsely accused and going through the preliminary legal hoops.
I kept going back-and-forth if he was being truthful or not but in the end, I’m still unsure. This book is advertises being the first and the trilogy so there’s more of this whirlwind to come.
💭 If you’re looking for a fast paced book with serious undertones this is a great book for you. I devoured this book in one night (RIP to a good night’s sleep 😴 😂). Cayden is accused of rape and is facing a pretty serious potential prison sentence. Throughout this legal drama we gain insight of his version of the events. Is he telling the truth?? Keep reading to find out. I loved that the book dove right into the plot and didn’t have a ton of unnecessary fluff. That’s one of my biggest pet peeves in books. I do wish we would have heard Jade’s side of the story too. If you were an avid follower of the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard trial you would absolutely devour this. It’s a whole lot of he said she said and throughout the novel you learn a little more about the actual events of that night. I was pleasantly surprised with this one!
If you enjoy unreliable narrators, this is the book for you! I love how the book lays it all out from the beginning but you start to doubt what you read. The story is told from Cayden’s perspective. Most of the time, these types of books are told from the accuser’s view. It was interesting to read from the other side. I also enjoy the courtroom aspect of this book. I was hooked me from page 1 and I didn’t want to put it down. This seems ripped from the headlines, both from the #metoo movement and with the more recent Depp/Heard trial. I loved how well this author wove this story together.
This thriller was such a wild ride! The author did a wonderful job of keeping you guessing until the end. You are hooked from start to finish. I was back and forth throughout the whole book of thinking I knew the truth. I was also back and forth with my opinion on the characters. These books are the types that I love. I love being surprised and on the edge of my seat like this book had me. If you want a perfect October read, this is for you.
"Descent into Doubt" by Casey Harper is a fast paced legal thriller that delves into the harrowing journey of Cayden Chase, a TV news reporter accused of sexual assault and sodomy.
The narrative masterfully blends elements of law and psychology, I was constantly questioning the thin line between truth and perception. The character development was really good, making the story feel almost like a real-life celebrity case. The inclusion of mixed media through a QR code at the end added an intriguing layer to the experience.
Having Cayden's perspective as the main pov made this book really great. I was empathizing with his predicament one minute and second guessing him the next.
The he said/she said dynamic adds a twist for sure and kept the pages turning. I enjoyed reading about the complexities of the legal system and the challenges it presents, making this book highly relevant for our times.
All in all, this is a fast paced legal thriller, with a pinch of mystery that keeps you guessing. And this book can be read in a day so that’s a win win.
TW: Themes include graphic consensual sex scenes and numerous mentions of rape.
